Pequea Valley Seventh-Grader Publishes First Book

Most sources put an author’s chances of getting a manuscript professionally published at around 1% to 2%.

Not great chances. But Harper Weber, 13, of Paradise, can say that she beat the odds.

Weber, a seventh-grade student at Pequea Valley Secondary School, held a signing for her new book, “The Adventure That Awaits,” on Friday, March 27, at the school’s media center.

The student had her work published through ReadyAimWrite Kids, an organization founded by Harrisburg resident Stephen Kozan that helps students across the country become published authors.

Weber’s book is an eight-chapter, 55-page children’s piece that follows a pair of siblings who embark on a vacation to Australia without their parents. Their plane crashed en route to their destination,

forcing the siblings to swim to and survive on an abandoned island.

“In fourth grade, we were writing an adventure story,” Weber said. “Then I kind of just took it from there.”

The signing was attended by Weber’s classmates, teachers and family, many of whom were a part of her acknowledgments section: her parents, Crystal and Dana; her sisters, Lorelei and Maura; and various teachers.

“If I gave her a task, she would go above and beyond with anything I gave her,” said Weber’s fourthgrade teacher, Kristen Rogers. “She was always willing to take any advice and feedback I gave her.”

Weber took questions from the assembled crowd in a question-and-answer format before signing books.

“It was really cool; I liked that my friends were here for the support,” she said. “My friends and family have always been there for me to support me.”

Aidan Stiger’s arms started to feel heavy.

Shooting 100 free throws in a row is a sneakily physically daunting task, but knowing it’s for charity can provide some relief.

On March 27, the Factory Ministries held its annual b.i.g. Shots event, a fundraiser where participants shoot 100 free throws for charity.

“It’s a mental game,” Stiger said. “You’ve got to keep yourself in it

and try to stay focused.”

The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, holds programming with the goal of addressing poverty and empowering those who are affected by it in eastern Lancaster County and the surrounding areas.

Its annual b.i.g. Shots event, a collaboration with Baron Insurance Group, has been held since 2018. Community members can sponsor shooters either at a flat rate or per shot made.

It’s certainly more unique than

the average fundraiser.

“I was trying to get that muscle memory down,” said Stiger, who was representing Smoker Door Sales. “Then you get one or two there where you lose it for a little bit.”

Stiger, once a prep basketball player for Lampeter-Strasburg, wound up making 65 of his 100 attempts. His brother, Caleb, is also heavily involved with the fundraiser and manages Baron Insurance Group’s Gordonville branch.

• Why did they have those different kinds of sacrifices? All of these picture Jesus Christ and point to Him. We would like to invite you to hear our sermon series. We are doing a sermon series on the tabernacle, how it was constructed, the feast days, the various sacrifices and how they all point to Jesus Christ. Kozan attended the district for an assembly where he had every student write a one-page “flash fiction” piece, an original creative work. Kozan promised that the most interesting story would be fleshed out and turned into a whole book.

The original piece of notebook paper that Weber wrote her original story on was on display at the signing on Friday.

“I didn’t think that I was going to be the one to get picked,” said Weber, the 137th youth author published by ReadyAimWrite Kids.

As part of the agreement, Weber signed a real, legally binding contract with ReadyAimWrite Kids that gives her rights to royal -

ties should the book sell a certain number of copies.

Kozan described the contract as being very similar to what an author would sign with a normal publishing house.

“They learn the business part of it,” Kozan said.

“Then also the writing part and learning how to put things together.”

Weber is one of several Pequea Valley students who have been published through the program, most recently Evan Johnston’s “The Secret Mission of Billy Joe” in 2022.

The whole process, from notebook paper to publication, takes about a year.

Weber wrote the entire story, which was then edited by ReadyAimWrite Kids’ team. Weber also

provided guidance to illustrators on what she wanted the cover to look like.

Kozan said that 60 of Weber’s books have already been printed, but more are on the way due to the book’s early success.

Weber said that she isn’t sure about her future goals, but she can always say that she’s a published author.

Weber’s book is available to purchase on Amazon or at www.kids writestories.net/book/ the-adventure-that-awaits/.

This year, Factory Ministries raised over $43,000 through the fundraiser. The top shooter was Jared Harvey of Red Truck Mechanical, who made 85 shots. Ron Bare of Bare Wealth Advisors was the most sponsored shooter.

Factory Ministries holds a variety of programs aimed at addressing poverty. It has an on-site market, which provides those in need with food that can be purchased with Factory Bucks, which can be earned through attending Factory-based programs.

“It’s a way to empower them,” Factory Ministries communications director Ellie Green said of the market. “This is something that they have done, they have earned.”

All the food in the market is donated from the community, businesses, churches and school districts. If you are interested in donating, contact Kerri Burns, market and community engagement coordinator at 717-575-1538 or kerri@ thefactoryministries.com.

Factory Ministries also holds workforce advocacy and adult advocacy programs that support work environments and equip adults with learning and community resources, respectively.

The ministry also partners with Pequea Valley

School District and has several youth resources, such as its youth center and the “Building Braves” program.

“As much as possible, we’re trying to make the factory a one-stop shop for our community,” Green said. “If there are resources that you need, as much as possible, we want you to be able to access that here instead of having to go across the county.”

The money raised through Friday’s event goes directly toward these programs.

“Our mission is to empower people, connect resources and build community,” Green said. “We do that from birth through elderly.”

Green said that the ministry attracts residents from all over the area, beyond Pequea Valley, as far west as Lancaster city and as far south as Oxford. The ministry regularly gets people in from New Holland, Strasburg and Leola.

If there are resources located closer to where somebody is from, Factory Ministries redirects people to those resources.

To learn more or get involved with Factory Ministries, call 717-6879594, email info@the factoryministries.com or visit “The Factory Ministries” on both Facebook and Instagram.

Mercer Museum. Fonthill Castle was the home and showplace of Henry Chapman Mercer, an influential American tile maker, archaeologist, antiquarian, artist, and writer known for his role in the Arts and Crafts Movement. All the con -

crete used to build the six-story reinforced concrete castle was mixed by hand, and thousands of handcrafted ceramic tiles are embedded in the structure’s walls. The Mercer Museum houses a vast collection of artifacts depicting early American life. The trip will include time for lunch and selfguided exploration of downtown Doylestown. Each attendee will receive a complimentary snack box.

There is a fee, with a discount for Historic Preservation Trust members. To make reservations, by Friday, April 10, visit https://hptrust.org/ events-calendar/ or call 717-291-5861.

Fonthill Castle is not recommended for those with limited mobility, issues with stairs, or those who cannot stand for long periods of time. The historic castle portion of the Mercer Museum has an elevator and offers partial accessibility due to narrow passageways. Service animals are permitted at both Fonthill Castle and Mercer Museum in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify.

Proceeds will benefit the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, a county-wide, nonprofit organization dedicated solely to preserving architectural heritage.
