Church to host spring craft fair, Easter egg hunt

Limeville Church, 5783 Limeville Road, Gap, will host a spring craft fair on Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds from the event will support the church’s children’s ministry and the Limeville’s Blessings store, a ministry of the church that offers free clothing, household items, children’s toys, toiletries and more to people in need.

In addition to a sale of crafts, the craft fair will feature a silent auction and food items. “We will have beef barbecue, hot dogs, beverages and peanut butter eggs available for purchase at the craft show,” said congregation member Melanie Shivery, who is organizing the event along with Danae Baldwin. “The peanut butter eggs will be homemade. They will be made by the Blessings store (volunteers) and children’s ministry leaders.”

Review in Gap, Sight & Sound Theatres in Ronks, Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Tiny Town in Lancaster and The Brass Eagle Restaurant in Gap. Shivery noted that select crafters will also donate items for the auction.

All proceeds from the event will support the church’s children’s ministry and the Limeville’s Blessings store.

Silent auction items were donated by local businesses, including the Hair

The craft fair will be set up downstairs in the church’s fellowship hall. Crafts for sale will include leather jewelry and leather crafts, custom iced coffee cups, stuffed animals and crocheted items. “We also will have sewn crafts, resin jewelry, handmade candles, handmade salves and wood crafts,” Shivery added. In addition to organizing the church’s fall and spring craft show, Shivery operates Limeville’s Blessings, which opened at the church in July of 2022. Anyone in need of assistance is welcome to visit the store, and no proof of income or residency is required. Limeville’s Blessings is currently open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. People are permitted to visit the store to collect free items once per month.

Lancaster County A.A. provides support for sobriety

Alcoholism is a medical condition that, if left unaddressed, can wreak havoc and ruin lives.

The first step in treatment involves recognizing and acknowledging a problem exists. Lancaster County Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) treats the condition through empathy, communication and human support.

“Figures suggest that one-third of the (country’s) population has a drinking problem,” said Rick S., a central service office volunteer

for Lancaster County A.A. “For me, an alcoholic is someone who is drinking against their own will. There’s something in their mind and body that’s making them drink. They’re literally from all walks of life.”

“I’ve been very good friends with lawyers and doctors,” Rick S. continued. “I’ve been very good friends with people who are a step away from living on the streets. Everywhere you run across these people. They’re people who just want to live a better life and be better people.

“The idea is to bring the community together to enjoy coffee, conversation and music,” said Christiana Historical Society member Patti Shrom when describing Saturday on the Porch, a monthly activity held at the Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana. “It is a great setting, and on a beautiful morning, it’s a wonderful place to sit.”

The first Saturday on the Porch of the 2025 season will be presented by the Christiana

Historical Society on April 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. Music will be offered by accordion player Phara Blank from 10 a.m. to noon. The opening event will also feature children’s crafts.

One room of the Brinton House will be open where volunteers will sell beverages, including coffee, hot chocolate, juice and water. Homemade baked goods, as well as breakfast sandwiches donated by local businesses, will also be offered for sale.

“Each time is different, but we always have sweet treats, snacks

the vibe is unconditional support. For the most part, there’s nothing more than love and support.”

Lancaster County A.A. offers individuals two kinds of meetings: open meetings for anyone, including spouses, medical professionals and students, and closed meetings for only people who identify as having a drinking problem. The meetings are led by a volunteer - many times people who are recovering alcoholics themselves.

At the end of the meeting we say, ‘Thanks for being here and thanks for helping each other.’We tell them, ‘Keep coming back. It works if you work it.’”

“What a lot of newcomers say is, ‘I can’t believe how happy everybody is. What are all these people so happy about?’” said Rick S. “There are people who come in who are really suffering. But I think it helps to see people who have long-term sobriety. There’s a very light and friendly vibe. When the meeting starts, it can be very serious. There can be tears, tears of joy and tears of sorrow. Ultimately,

On the average, about 20 people attend each Lancaster County A.A. meeting.

“Each meeting has a similar format,” said Rick S. “After an opening or a greeting, we read the Alcoholics Anonymous preamble. Most meetings will have announcements about events and happenings. Typically, we read the 12 steps and the traditions, and we celebrate any A.A. anniversaries. Then it just opens up. If people want to share, they can share, or if not, they can just listen.

“There’s no doubt that there’s a genetic component to (alcoholism), and there can be a traumatic piece to it,” said Rick S., a resident of Lancaster Township. “Many of us aren’t first-time winners. A lot of us have to try it a number of times. Are we cured? I’m cured in the sense I no longer have a desire to drink. In A.A., our approach is that we’re in remission. It never leaves you. You can’t turn a pickle back into a cucumber.”

Christiana Historical Society mugs will also be offered for sale. Those who purchase a mug can bring it to future Saturday on the Porch events and have it refilled for a discount.

Yvette the Hotdog Lady will be set up on the Brinton House grounds, selling gourmet hot dogs, including bacon-wrapped hot dogs and hot dogs with chili and cheese.

“Since it is the first one and it’s close to Easter, we will have some ‘welcome, spring’ children’s activities or crafts,” Shrom said, adding that cornhole will also be offered on the grounds.

Members of the Octorara Area Junior-Senior High School Leo Club will assist with the activities. “They will help before with setup and help with the children’s activities on the day of the event,” noted Shrom.

After acquiring the building as its headquarters, the society began the Saturday on the Porch program in 2024. The event takes place on the first Saturday of each month, April

through November.

Shrom said that people may stop by for a quick snack or stay for the entire morning. “Some people are walkers-by, and they stop by if they hear the music and have a cup of coffee,” she said. “Others come specifically for the music and the conversation, and they stay with us all morning. We have more people that hang out than come and go.”

Mennonite Life will host a screening of the documentary “Seven Points on Earth” with author and researcher Royden Loewen on Tuesday, April 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The event will take place in the Visitors Center theater at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster.

Mennonite Life is joining a global faith community in commemorating the 500th anniversary of Anabaptism in 2025. Mennonite Life will explore the movement’s history at events throughout the year.

“Seven Points on Earth” studies the lives and family histories of seven Mennonite farmers in seven communities: Apollonovka in Siberia, Matopos in Zimbabwe, Riva Palacio in Bolivia, Margorejo in Java, Friesland in the Netherlands, Washington County in Iowa, and the rural Municipality of Rhineland in Manitoba. The film considers the environmental history of each context, focusing particularly on the relationship between faith and topics such as climate change, state policy, and global markets.

Visitors to the April event will be able to sneak a peek inside the house, but it is not yet suitable for occupation.

“They can also look in the windows at the ongoing process of the restoration,” said Shrom, adding that there will be a display of photos so that visitors can learn about the progress of the project.

Once the building is open, which is scheduled to be sometime at the end of 2025, it can be used during Saturday on the Porch when there is inclement weather or when additional seating

is needed. “When we get it opened, we will have some board games like checkers or chess that people can play when they visit,” said Shrom. “Or we can get out of the weather if it’s cold. (For right now), rain or shine, we are there.”

For more information about the society, upcoming events and the restoration project, visit www .christianahistoricalsociety.com or search for “The Christiana Historical Society” on Facebook. Those with questions may email info@ christianahistoricalsociety.com.

The 55-minute film will be followed by a question-and-answer session with author Loewen, whose research inspired the production of the documentary. Loewen is a retired Canadian history professor and chair in Mennonite studies at the University of Winnipeg. He is the author of “Mennonite Farmers: A Global History of Place and Sustainability.”

The program is now proud to call The Barn at Paradise Station home.

The coast-to-coast Lincoln Highway

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township

Long before there was a Salisbury Township, there was travel on the east-west Great Minquas Path and the north-south Octororo Trail. As European pioneers began to migrate west from Philadelphia and north from Newcastle ports, the trails also migrated a bit to accommodate wagons as well as foot traffic.

This rutted dirt highway, the Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike, had switchbacks on the mile-long Gap Hill, now known as Old Lincoln Highway. The other main highway through Lancaster County was King’s Highway, better known today as Route 340.

As motorized vehicles replaced horse-drawn conveyances and travelers extended their dreams toward the Pacific coast, the need for smoother, wider roads arose. In 1913, the Lincoln Highway Association (LHA) was established to form a coast-to-coast highway system “… like nowhere else on earth … without toll charges.”

Financing was never easy, requiring a constant publicity campaign. Auto-related businesses as well as the cities that would profit from the across-the-nation super-road were contacted for funds.

Congress authorized construction of the Lincoln Memorial Road, but only from Washington to Gettysburg. To convince Congress to extend the road to San Francisco, the LHA set out in a convoy of cars and trucks to navigate the entire country. The trip of 3,000 miles took travelers through 34

days of mud pits in Iowa, sand drifts in Nevada, flooded roads and cracked axles and through the experience of radiators boiling over before parading triumphantly into San Francisco, passing crowds of cheering residents. LHA gained further attention of federal as well as local funding when the U.S. Army used the route as part of preparations for military training for World War I. Local bond issues helped greatly to speed up the project.

In Pennsylvania, the route roughly followed the 62-mile Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike, first laid out in 1758. The official route was announced in October 1913, and cities all along the designated route held bonfires and fireworks, concerts and parades, even street dances.

By 1916, an official guidebook estimated the trip would take 20 to 30 days, assuming the average

driving speed would be 18 miles an hour. The motorist was advised to travel with tire chains, shovel, axe, jacks, tire casings and inner tubes, plus a set of tools. Anticipating the mud the motorist could expect to encounter, further advice was: “Don’t wear new shoes.”

The Lincoln Highway officially begins with a marker at Times Square in New York City and ends at a pylon in the center of San Francisco. It was dedicated all across the nation at 1 p.m. on Sept. 1, 1926.

Simultaneously, Boy Scout troops across the nation placed a total of 3,000 concrete markers at important crossroads, minor crossings and other intervals to assure motorists that they were on the right road. The

signs carried the Lincoln Highway insignia, a bronze medallion that stated, “This Highway Dedicated to Abraham Lincoln,” and a directional arrow. Many of those 3,000 markers have disappeared as roads were widened. Lancaster County has several, but the closest to Salisbury Township is in Paradise, on the south side of the road just west of the bridge at Ambassador Road.

Salisbury Township has an even older marker from the earliest days of Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike days: a stone pylon etched with “45m … P, 19 … L,” signifying 45 miles to Philadelphia and 19 miles to Lancaster. Salisbury Township has always had an important connection to this nationwide highway.
