Partnership Gives Away Hundreds Of Coats BY ANN MEAD ASH
lthough the coat giveaway for area men, women, and children held at The Factory was not announced far in advance, cars were lined up two abreast in the Together Community Center parking lot a halfhour before the event started on Feb. 13. Some waiting in line were also there for the Fresh Express grocery giveaway, held monthly at The Factory, but a number had come to protect themselves or their children from the cold with a new coat. The coats, which were given away until 2 p.m., were provided through a partnership between The Factory and the Blessings Store, a clothing bank ministry of Limeville United Methodist Church, 5783 Limeville Road, Gap. The store is a project of Limeville pastor Jim Brashear and Jeff Markle, who travels from the Allentown area to oversee the clothing bank that was started at the church in late 2020. “ We have partnered with the school districts,” said Markle, who
“We are hoping we will be able to help families in need.” “It was his vision 15 years ago to open a store in downtown Allentown for homeless and those in need,” said Markle. When Markle retired, he took over the Allentown store, partnering with the Burlington Coat Factory in the area to hold a coat drive each October and November. “I would give out 500 coats in the Lehigh Valley between November and January (annually),” said Markle, who noted Burlington customers could bring a clean coat in good condition to donate to receive a discount from the store.
Customers could also purchase a coat to donate. Markle said about 20% of the collected coats are gently used, and the rest are purchased new. The 250 coats collected to be given away at The Factory were donated at the Trexlertown Burlington Coat Factory store between Thanksgiving of 2020 and Jan. 9, 2021. Markle said that he is at the Blessings Store at the Limeville Church on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. “If people can’t make it at that time, we can make arrangements,” Markle said, adding, “We follow all the social distancing guidelines and (require) masks.” Only one family is served in the store at a time. “We are hoping we will be able to help families in need,” said Markle. In addition to clothing, the store offers a limited selection of free hygiene items for adults, teens, children, and infants. noted that the church has been in contact with both Pequea Valley and Octorara Area school districts. “We have sent out emails to parents telling them we have clothing for families in need,” he added. The clothing ministry has roots in Bethany Church, located in Allentown, where Brashear was pastor at the time the ministry started.
BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, is currently operating in six locations in Lebanon, Chester, and Lancaster counties and the state of Delaware. The decades-old ministry is part of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International in Ephrata. BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support, and the ministry provides resources, educational workshops, structured gatherings, and more for bereaved couples and single parents. In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry. “Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife, Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had
questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. “Your heart just goes out to people,” said Dan, who added that the loss of a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other.

became a volunteer with ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community (DF), an outreach of Garden Spot Village (GSV). In June of 2019, the organization launched memory cafes to provide settings for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to enjoy social engagement and conversation about relevant topics in a stigma-free environment. By September of 2020, Crystal was working as coordinator for the organization, which moved to join Dementia Friendly America (DFA) in November of that year, becoming Dementia Friendly Lancaster County (DFLC). At the same time, Crystal became a champion for Dementia Friends PA, which gave her the opportunity to host Dementia Friends sessions. In January, Crystal held her first Dementia Friends information session in a virtual format. The session covered key messages about dementia and how it affects individuals, among other topics. It ended with participants developing a plan involving ways to make the community more dementia friendly. To introduce the organization to community members, a pamphlet about Dementia Friendly Lancaster County and a volunteer guidelines booklet have been created. The booklet outlines the ways people can serve, including an advisory board, which acts as the organization’s eyes and ears in the community, and a

aged to share their feelings. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in
Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County - one in Paradise and the other in Akron. Domain names can be purchased relatively inexpensively from Google, and free or low-cost site builders like Wix, Weebly, and Webs are available. Grim recommends using SquareSpace, which has a strong search engine optimization (SEO) framework that helps websites become visible in searches. Before starting, however, business owners should plan a good messaging strategy by identifying their target audience and how the business’ service or product can solve customers’ problems, and they should create a mood board, which will lead to the creation of a style guide. Grim recommended visiting www.mystorybrand.com to help with that process. Once the site is live on the web, the next thing is to update it on a regular basis through blog posts, video content, and voice recordings. These can be uncomfortable at first, Grim noted. “For most businesses, in order to grow, (owners) need to step out a bit,” Grim shared. “For a while, I didn’t like being on camera, so I didn’t do anything, but then I discovered podcasts. I got comfortable with them, and now I do videos.” Podcasts are a significant missed marketing opportunity, Grim said, as there are large databases of podcasts looking for guests. Even if a podcast is not local, the link will point back to the business page, which will improve rankings in search results. PA 211 East, United Way of Lancaster County’s signature program, covers Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, and Schuylkill counties. by the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, PA 211 East had 69,377 contacts with the community in 2020, which is an increase of 7,322 from 2019. PA 211 is the free, confidential, 24/7/365 service that connects Pennsylvanians with all the health and human services in their area that are available to help. During the COVID-19 pandemic, PA 211’s contact center staff shifted to remote operations and continued to provide trained resource navigators. PA 211 provided its statewide resource database as a backbone to deliver up-to-the minute information about available local services and volunteer opportunities. Virtual Food Drives Needed Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) will launch another virtual food drive. The virtual food drive is an online tool allowing individuals and organizations to raise funds to help the CPFB purchase and distribute large quantities of fresh, nutritious, and shelf-stable healthy foods at deeply reduced rates. Every dollar raised through the virtual food drive will help the food bank distribute more than six healthy
meals to those in need throughout 27 central Pennsylvania counties. CPFB is currently serving more than 200,000 individuals per month through its network of 1,000 partner agencies and programs, and it distributes more than 1.3 million pounds of food per week. Hosting a virtual food drive allows community members to reach more of these individuals by helping the food bank purchase fresh fruits,
vegetables, dairy products, and proteins, in addition to nonperishable food items. Pequea Presbyterian Church, Pequea EC Church, Mount Airy EC Church, and Limeville United Methodist Church will host a service on Maundy Thursday, April 1, at 7 p.m. The event will take place at Pequea Presbyterian Church, 273 Cambridge Road, Gap, and will feature Holy Communion, devotional messages, and worship through song. Sindall Transport a motor carrier based in New Holland, PA with approximately 25 power units specializing in flatbed freight is looking for an experienced and reliable Dispatch Manager. We deliver freight in Northeast and Central United States as well as Ontario & Quebec, Canada.
Qualified Applicants Must: • Have reliable transportation • Work well with others • Loader and/or Forklift experience (helpful but not necessary).
Candidate must possess an extremely pleasant personality and earn the respect of the drivers who deliver our freight. Must have demonstrated an ability to grow revenue from the existing customer base. 5 years of dispatching experience required. Must be computer literate to effectively route drivers using mapping programs and other available software programs. Should be able to leverage the use of technology to offer improvements to our existing processes to improve the overall operation of the dispatch department. Must be detail-oriented, highly organized, and perform well under pressure. Experience with border crossings and related paperwork for deliveries into Canada helpful.
