Over the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.

On Thursday, April 4, Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) has planned an opportunity for students to exercise their creativity. The third annual STEAM Flight Night will be held at Paradise Elementary School, 20 Belmont Road, Paradise, from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is invited. The STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) event will give visitors the opportunity to experience firsthand how students learn about those subjects in PVSD.
“The main gist of the event is a combination of what was our science fair and art show,” said teacher Mallory VanLeer. “We have added to that night with STEM-related activities, so it’s a chance for kids to see the art show and some science projects and do some interactive STEAM activities and have a good time.”
The arts segment of the evening will include an art showcase featuring works by students in kindergarten through grade 12. “We display what they have been working on throughout the year,”

Sadsbury Friends celebrate 300th anniversary with special events
BY FRANCINE FULTONSadsbury Friends Meeting, a Quaker house of worship, is observing its 300th anniversary this year with special events.
In January, the meeting hosted a wedding re-enactment. The bride and groom were portrayed by students from Delaware Valley Friends School, who filled the roles of Joseph Miller and Jane Kirk, the first couple to be married at Sadsbury Monthly Meeting in 1738.
The next scheduled event will be a talk by historian and educator Harold Finigan of Darby Meeting, who will speak about the Lenapi and Minquas Trail. The free lecture will be offered on
Saturday, March 30, at 10:30 a.m. in the downstairs community room at the Meeting.
According to Meeting member Connie Webster, the trail from the Susquehanna River to the Schuylkill River was used for trade with Native Americans by Dutch and Swedish settlers.
“Before the Quakers came to Pennsylvania, the Dutch and Swedes settled around Philadelphia and Wilmington. They were interested in getting beaver pelts to sell to the people in Europe. The native people were the ones who got the pelts,” she explained. “(Finigan) will talk about the history of the trail and how they transported the pelts along the trail from central Pennsylvania down to the Philadelphia area.”
She noted that the trail is also called the Great Minnequa Pass and that

a historical marker was posted at the location of the trail near Gap. The inscription on the marker reads, “An Indian trail, which was later the original Conestoga Road, passed through Gap, half a mile south of here. Over it, in the 17th century, Minquas (Conestoga) Indians carried quantities of beaver skins from the Susquehanna See Sadsbury pg 5

said VanLeer, who noted that art on display from all four PVSD schools will include two- and three-dimensional pieces, mixedmedia creations, paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures. The 2023 STEAM Flight Night included an interactive space where participating students could create drawings attached to a bigger mural space. “They had all kinds of tools with which to create a mini artwork to become part of the larger mural,” said VanLeer, who added that an interactive art-making space will offer a variation of that project this year.
Teacher Rob Webb will talk about the eclipse due to occur on Monday, April 8, and offer a student
activity connected to his discussion. Science projects made by students in kindergarten through sixth grade will be on display. “Our tech education team will hold a tallest tower competition, along with a showcase of robots constructed by learners,” said VanLeer. In addition, a hand-built hydraulic claw machine made by students will be on display. Logo designs for the event T-shirts were created by students in the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) CORE program.
“We will also have the makers market,” shared VanLeer, who explained that the market gives any child in PVSD a place to offer wares for sale. “If you have a sixth-grader making friendship bracelets, they
can sell them there,” said VanLeer.
Music during the event will be provided by the Pequea Valley Intermediate School Brave Sounds and the PVHS jazz band.
PVHS National Honor Society students will serve as volunteers.

There’s no business like show business
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts will present “Annie Get Your Gun” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 21, 22 and 23, at Lancaster Country Day School’s Gardner Theater, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster. Shows will begin at 7 p.m., and Saturday will include a matinee at 1:30 p.m. in addition to the evening performance. Tickets for general admission and reserved seating are available to purchase online for a discounted price, and tickets will be sold at the door prior to each show. Children will receive a discounted rate for both general admission and reserved seating.
Director Brittany Beitzel’s decision to select
“Annie Get Your Gun” as this year’s spring musical was influenced by multiple factors. The play is a personal favorite of Beitzel’s, and she cites it as the main reason she decided to pursue theater professionally after seeing it for the first time at 13 years old. “I was just so inspired by the story, the sweeping music and the comedy,” Beitzel said. “I felt like it would be the perfect show for these kids to take on, and it also is a show that speaks a lot to some deeper meanings.”
“Annie Get Your Gun” was debuted on Broadway in 1946, featuring music and lyrics written by renowned composer Irving Berlin. The story is based on the life and exploits of Annie Oakley, a real-life sharpshooter who rose to

fame in the late 19th century as a performer in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. Annie, played by Mary Frances Eschenwald of
Ronks, is a rowdy and kindhearted markswoman who learned to shoot as a child to provide for her family in rural Ohio. After defeating famous gunman Frank Butler, played by Jack Etter, Annie embarks on a journey to become one of the most legendary performers in American history.

As a young woman with humble origins, Annie faces many challenges as she climbs to stardom. The play incorporates themes such as humility, rivalry, selfless love and treating others with compassion as Annie navigates the world of show business and defies the prejudices of her time.
“It’s an incredible story that I’m really passionate about,” Eschenwald said. “Annie Oakley is such a onein-a-million character; she has a competitive, prideful side to her, but she also

“Strasburg Road vaguely follows the path of that early trade route between the two rivers,” Webster added. “When William Penn came over, the Quaker settlers had the same trade agreement with the native people.”
Additionally, the Meeting will hold open worship on Good Friday, March 29, from noon to 3 p.m. The silent worship is held to commemorate the three hours of Jesus’ crucifixion. “This is a drop-in - dropout event,” Webster said. “Some of us will be there for three hours, but anybody can come during that span of time and stay as long as they want.”
The next scheduled anniversary event at the Sadsbury Friends Meeting is a high tea, set for Saturday, May 11.

“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.
As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.
“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing business, but he always wanted to do his own thing.”
In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had
quit his day job to focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their children - Charlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.
Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.
“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”

Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC, with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.
Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.
Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.
“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”
EPC publications focus on telling the good news
happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.
“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”
Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer. “We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”
As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning into providing digital solutions for clients, while continuing to support local businesses and tell positive stories through its community newspapers and online at www.townlively.com.
“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him, but I know his goal and his mission was to support the community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”

wears her heart on her sleeve and fights for equality and justice for others.” Eschenwald and Etter will star beside Brian Boyle as Buffalo Bill and Josiah Werner in the role of Charlie Davenport.
The Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts draws students from across Lancaster County, many of whom are homeschooled. This is the first year the academy will hold a show at Gardner Theater, making

“Annie Get Your Gun” one of its largest-scale productions to date.

LEMA unveils alternative weather alert system
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe primary goal of the Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency (LEMA) is to prepare local residents for emergencies, from severe weather conditions to man-made disasters. The organization seeks to accomplish this by identifying potential hazards, providing training resources, developing emergency action plans and working with other emergency management agencies at the federal and state levels.
LEMA uses a notification system called LANC-Alert to send real-time updates to Lancaster County residents during emergencies. The alert system uses phone calls, text messaging and emails to keep people informed, and many other emergency management agencies utilize similar procedures. Unlike many other agencies, however, LEMA faces the added component of serving Amish and Mennonite communities
that have limited access to electronic communication.
To better serve Lancaster County’s unique communities, LEMA is in the process of creating a severe weather alert system for those who do not have access to LANCAlert notifications. The idea was proposed by the National Weather Service, which receives thousands of calls every year from members of Plain communities who are concerned about severe forecasts and the threat that they pose to crops. The new system, which LEMA hopes to implement in the spring, will allow residents to opt in for emergency landline notifications by submitting a physical form.
LEMA took the idea to the Amish Safety Committee to assess which types of alerts Plain community members are most interested in, such as warnings for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding. Although LEMA is still developing a distribution plan, the organization will

hand out opt-in forms at mud sales, farm and family safety days and other local events.
“This is part of a whole community approach. We’re trying to think of all the different groups in the area and how to best prepare them for emergencies,” said Brooke Bowman, community resilience coordinator and volunteer liaison at LEMA. “The National Weather Service brought this idea to us as a guinea pig project because
of how large the Plain community is here.”
Until 2021, LEMA worked with the South Central Task Force to send mass calls and text alerts via a reverse 911 system. After the system became inactive, LEMA used funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to create LANC-Alert, which it implemented in December 2023. “We’ve been rolling out the English community side of it more seamlessly. Lancaster County residents can sign up from their devices and choose which alerts they want to receive,” said LEMA hazardous materials administrator Zachary Gibbons. “People can opt in for anything from agricultural weather notifications to seasonal alerts.”

To learn more or to sign up for emergency notifications, visit www .co.lancaster.pa.us/2892/ LANC-Alert.

Schreiber Center adds new therapy
The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development now offers VitalStim therapy, a non-invasive treatment for children with swallowing disorders. The new service is available from Ashley Shaffer, the newest member of the speech-language department at the Schreiber Center and the first speech-language pathologist at the center to attain certification in VitalStim therapy.
VitalStim is an FDA-approved therapy that utilizes electrical currents to stimulate throat muscles, ensuring proper and safe swallowing. Swallowing, considered by many as an automatic reflex, involves a complex process requiring coordination among approximately 50 pairs of muscles and nerves across three stages. The pharyngeal phase, where VitalStim therapy is most effective, is crucial for protecting the airway and ensuring proper movement of food from the mouth to the esophagus. Children requiring feeding therapy may include those with neuromuscular disorders, congenital conditions like cleft palates, developmental delays affecting swallowing abilities, and those recovering from surgery or injuries impacting throat muscles.
The new equipmentincluding the VitalStim Plus Electrotherapy and sEMG Biofeedback System, as well as VitalStim Electrodeswas purchased through an October 2023 donation of $13,050 from the GIANT Company through its Make

Shaarai Shomayim to present Purimshpiel
The Purimshpiel - from the Yiddish word spiel, meaning play - is a comic production in which participants wear costumes that depict the characters in the story in the Book of Esther, the central text and narrative that describes what transpired on Purim and why it has become an important Jewish holiday. Each year, the Shpielers take the songs from a particular American musical, parody the lyrics of those songs, and merge the themes of the musical with the story of the Book of Esther. In this year’s production, the chosen musical is 1956 Lerner and Loewe Broadway musical “My Fair Lady.”
Esther, who is Jewish,
wants to apply to be the new queen, but she learns that her Jewish accent will disqualify her from consideration. She convinces her cousin Mordechai, a professor of speech at the University of Shushan, to prepare her for the royal ball, at which time King Ahashuerus will choose a new queen to replace the deposed Vashti. Meanwhile, Haman, the mean and anti-Semitic prime minister, convinces the king to issue a decree to kill all the Jews.
The principal actors will be Lisa Miller playing Esther, Kevin Babione as Mordechai, Stu Blumenthal as Ahashuerus, and Jason Meyer as Haman. Also performing are Missy DePietro, Melanie DeSantis, Anita Devlin, Tama Etra, Elin Ketels, Ilene Kochel, Bethany Kristich, Tyler Mandel, Schuyler Nissly, Rabbi Jack Paskoff, Abigail Rackliffe, Eliza Rackliffe, Harvey Scolnick, Colleen Stameshkin,
