A vision to help

About a year ago, Alliance Network organized its first Concert Fundraiser.

Dave Smucker, director of Alliance Network, said that the success of the 2024 event was the impetus for holding a second concert, but with a few changes. The initial concert attracted about 700 attendees and raised $24,000 for a mission to

Kenya. “The Lord always gives the provision for the vision, so we just want to host a great gathering for this convergence,” said Smucker, who went on to detail a change in venue and the addition of food offerings at this year’s event.

The 2025 Concert Fundraiser, hosted by Alliance Network and benefiting Preparing the Way Ministries, will be held in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible

College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 15. The concert will feature three live gospel acts. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the concert will begin at 6 p.m.

The Matt & Nimmie Band, which took part in the first event, will return for the follow-up. The band has been playing music together for more than five years. The goal of the family and friends who are band members is to share

the Gospel and the hope of Jesus through their songs. The band’s greatest desire is to bring honor and glory to God through music.

New this year will be Paradise Road, a five-member Lancaster band that seeks to share the Gospel through music.

Harmony of Hope features seven members, a group of friends who love the Lord. According to a summary they shared with

Smucker, they all have a “desire to share the hope of Jesus Christ with others and make a difference in the community through music.” Another addition to this year’s event will be three food trucks, which will be open to serve food outside the Good Shepherd Chapel beginning at 5 p.m. Skip’s Food Truck will sell chicken sandwiches and loaded fries, and Divine Grind, a mobile coffee café, will

Lanco Senior Softball league seeks players

If you are 58 years old or older and enjoy staying active, the Lanco Senior Softball league is looking for you.

Men and women within a 100-mile radius of Lancaster city who are interested in playing can contact league president Dave Dean at 610-334-1124 or email treasurer Dave Zerbe at dzerbe@comcast.net.

“We are looking for players,” said Zerbe, who resides in Strasburg. “Anybody interested

in playing should call or email and give us your contact information so we can follow up with you. But if there are people who can’t play anymore, but would like to help coach, we’d be interested in those people.”

Each team has a coach and an assistant coach, and some serve as league officers and board members.

Lanco Senior Softball, which started in 1990, currently has about 200 players divided among 12 teams split into two divisions, American and National.

Library Friends plan spring book sale

A popular event that usually takes place as part of the Summer Reading Program at Moores Memorial Library in Christiana is the appearance of Jesse Rothacker, known as The Reptile Guy. Founder of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, Rothacker’s programs feature live animals, including snakes, lizards and turtles.

To assure that the program will be financially possible, the Friends of Moores Memorial Library will utilize proceeds from their upcoming spring book sale to raise funds for the appearance.

“We hope the book sale will allow us to make enough money to hire him back,” explained Friends vice president Jeannette Kolb. “This year, we are having the book sale for something special. Maybe people who like him will come to the book sale.”

“(For his past appearance), we packed the house on a Thursday night. We had an overflow crowd. The kids just love him,” added library director Trish Vandenbosch, noting that this year’s Summer Reading Program theme will be “Color Our World.”

The book sale will take place in the Read Moore Book Store and community room, located in the lower level of the library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana.

Sale hours are Thursday, March 6, from noon to 7 p.m.; Friday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

A bag sale will also be featured where shoppers may fill a bag of books for a

set price. Bags will be provided by the library. “We will have a bag sale every day of the sale, not just the last day,” said Kolb. Offered for sale will be inspirational books and Bibles, cookbooks, largeprint books and children’s books, as well as paperback and hardback adult fiction. To accommodate the growing collection, the Friends members installed shelving along the perimeter of the community room, which is where all of the hardback nonfiction is located.

“The fiction will be sorted by authors,” said Kolb, noting popular authors include Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel, Stuart Woods and James Patterson. There will also be a large selection of DVDs and puzzles offered for sale.

In addition to the spring and fall book sales, shoppers may find quality used books at reasonable prices at the Read Moore Book Store, which is open on Mondays through Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The featured books on sale come from community donations and the library’s collection.

Mennonite Life workshop to build dwelling places for God

There are any number of different teaching methods, each one designed to match each individual’s learning style. Kinesthetic learning or experiential learning involves touching and performing hands-on tasks.

For some, that particular type of learning allows participants to understand subjects on a deeper level and remember them longer. It’s the style of learning that the Mennonite Life Visitors Center will employ during its upcoming workshop.

“Through my own background in education, I enjoy

seeing people engage in a learning experience and just seeing the light bulbs go off,” said Laura Metzler, who’s been the Mennonite Life Visitors Center’s manager for four years. “I like seeing people engaged. It’s just fun to see people learning. We can learn so much better when we engage the other senses. It’s a hands-on experience with this structure.”

The Mennonite Life Visitors Center, which is located at 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host its second annual Tabernacle Kit Workshop on Saturday, March 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The educational and interactive workshop

is ideal for small groups, families, homeschoolers and Sunday school classes. There is a fee involved, and space for the hands-on class is limited. To register visit www.mennonitelife .org/events/list or call 717-393-9745.

“It’s an invitation to anyone who want to engage in a more personal relationship with the Lord,” said Metzler. “My biggest hope is that (people) learn the heart of the story of the tabernacle. It’s a story

Lancaster County WoodCarvers to hold 50th festival

The Lancaster County WoodCarvers group will hold its 50th annual Woodcarving Festival on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millersville University’s Student Memorial Center, 108 Shenks Lane, Millersville.

Parking is free. Admission is free for those with a military ID and for students with high school or post-high school student ID.

“It’s going to be the largest show we’ve had,” said Jeffrey Pretz, who is a member of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers. “We’re having commemorative carving knives created that will be for sale. We’re having the Caricature Carvers of America. There will be a lot of bird carvers and spoon carvers and other kinds of carvings, as well.”

The featured guest carver will be

Jeffrey Pretz of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers

Joe You, past president of Caricature Carvers of America. A retired dentist from California, You is regarded as a creative and accomplished caricature carver.

“People can come to purchase supplies for carving as well as carvings that are handmade by individuals who are there,” Pretz said.

“They can also come for inspiration of a great hobby.”

Softball

Last year’s teams were Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant (home field at Rapho Park), LH Brubaker Appliances (Garrett Field), RH Cooper & Son (Rapho Park), Speedwell Construction (Rapho Park), Ephrata Good’s Disposal (Ephrata Middle School), Kautz Construction (Garrett Field), Strasburg (Strasburg Jaycee Park), TJ Rockwell’s (Rapho Park), Caruso’s Pizzeria (Rapho Park), GE Richards Graphic Supplies (Garrett Field), Mid Penn Bank (Ephrata Middle School), and Steel Fab Enterprises (Garrett Field).

Players do not have to play with the team based closest to their homes.

“It’s competitive,” Zerbe said. “These fellas, most of them have been playing some sort of organized ball in high school right through college and in different softball leagues as they got older and still enjoy the game.”

The median age of players in the league is 64, Zerbe said.

Teams will begin practicing in April, and there will occasionally be in-season practices. The season will start in either the last week of April or first week of May with one or two games a week. The seven-inning games will start at 6 p.m. and will generally be over by 7:15 or 7:30, Zerbe said.

It is a modified league, which means pitchers throw as fast as they can while using a bowling-style motion, Zerbe explained. There is no sliding or base stealing. American

Softball Association (ASA) rules and ASA umpires are used.

“We do have fun, but it can get very competitive,” said Zerbe. “You have different calibers of teams. You have some teams where guys are just trying to have fun and enjoy the game. If they win, they win. If they lose, they lose. Other guys like to win and win it all.”

In addition to Rapho Park in Mount Joy, Ephrata Middle School, Garrett Field in Willow Street, and Strasburg Jaycee Park, Stauffer Park in Lancaster is used for championship games and could host regular-season games this year.

There were 17 regular-season games last year, with that total depending on the number of teams in the league. The regular season is slated to finish at the end of July, followed by the double-elimination playoffs with all teams qualifying and seeded based on record. A champion is crowned from both divisions.

Zerbe is hoping to attract more players for the 2025 campaign. “It seems like we’re struggling with having fellas in their early 50s who are excited about continuing to play softball,” he said. “Some of the guys are coming back and playing, but recruiting new fellas seems to be a little harder.”

The requirements are simple. “You have to have a love of the sport,

Caruso’s Pizzeria senior softball team won the National Division Playoff Championship last season. The team includes (front, from left) Ebiel Morales, Norm Summers, Kevin Weinhold, Mike Hostetler, Fredy Lopez, (middle) Joe Ives, Phil Maxey, David Garcia, Steve Murphy, Keith Ingram, (back) Bob Ricedorf, Rich Lucchese, Eric Kronawetter, Kevin Allen, Greg Henkel, Angel TorresPerez, (not pictured) Jim Weller, Tom Hollow, Edwin Rodriguez, and Jon Fodor.

baseball or softball,” said Zerbe. “You have to love the sport to want to play. You have to have a little bit of competitive spirit and ability to play. That being said, if you want to enjoy and meet some good fellas who are unified in their ability to play and want to play, then come join us. It’s good exercise. The older we get, the

more we move and the more we stay active, the longer we’re going to live. If you can come out and one night a week you run and bat and throw the ball, it keeps your blood pumping and it keeps you young. Come out and have a good time and enjoy the camaraderie. You can meet people and become friends.”

WoodCarvers

Among the 60 exhibitors will be members of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers’ sister clubs, including the American National Cane Club (ANCC), a club that focuses on canes and walking sticks and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Manheim Township WoodCarvers, a club that focuses on carving together and crafting Christmas ornaments for hospice and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Conewago Carvers, a club that meets in East Berlin; the West Shore Woodcarvers, a club that is active in Mechanicsburg; the Yorkarvers, a club from York; the PA Delaware Valley Woodcarvers, a club from Bucks County; and the William Rush Woodcarvers, a club in Media. The Pennsylvania Gourd Society will present a display of its art with gourds.

There will be a free hands-on carving station for new carvers or those who just want to try carving. All supplies and tools will be available for use with basic safety and techniques shared. Instruction and guidance will be provided by club members. Each session will take about an hour and will start on the hour and on the half hour. At the end of the hour, most will leave with their carved project. Participants must be at least 18 years old, and everyone must sign a waiver to participate in a session.

Original woodcarvings will be available for purchase from many of the artists and carvers. Vendors will also sell carving and art tools, supplies, books, and wood. Among

from pg 5

the vendors expected are Art From the Bark, Kathryn and Dennis Overcash from Rhoadesville, Va.; Badger State Blades, Ashten Brown from Wisconsin; Hillcrest Carving, Don Swartz from Lancaster County; Ritter Carvers Inc., Barbara Ritter from Colmar; The Carving Glove Guy, Don Butler from Michigan; and Windy Cape Studios, Joshua Walters from Annville.

Professional sharpening will be available for woodcarving knives and gouges. A silent auction will be held for a number of carvings and wildlife art donated by exhibitors and club members, as well as a variety of other items. Proceeds from the silent auction will be split between the club’s Beginner Carver Fund and one local nonprofit organization. Door prizes of carvings done by the Lancaster County WoodCarvers will be awarded regularly throughout the festival.

The Lancaster County WoodCarvers group, made up of 75 members, meets the third Tuesday evening of each month at Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster. Carving starts at 6 p.m. with a meeting and show-andtell at 7 p.m.

The group holds an “open carve” at Community United Methodist Church on the first Thursday of every month at 9 a.m.and 6 p.m.

“It’s an outlet for my creativity,” Pretz said. “But also there are a lot of books and patterns that you can copy. It’s something you can do that’s not noisy, you’re using your hands, and you can do it almost any place.”

that’s as relevant today as it was in biblical times. Most of the people choosing to come have a basic understanding of it. But when you’re working with your hands, it takes the meaning to a different level. We would love for people to know that a replica of (the tabernacle) exists in Lancaster. It’s kind of a hidden secret in the county.”

The tabernacle kit event will begin with a showing of the 30-minute film “The Biblical Tabernacle Experience,” followed by the 90-minute workshop. From the kit, participants will build a scale model of the tabernacle described in Scripture using simple materials like wood, pegboard, four pieces of fabric, prefabricated miniature furniture and glue.

“A tabernacle is a very basic

structure used as a dwelling place for God to live,” said Metzler. “It was portable. It wasn’t like the temple. As people hear about it, they will learn how it was built. (The workshop) teaches people how to approach Him and live with Him. It’s a way to see how we relate to an invisible, holy God. People can worship Him, and you’re actually in His presence.”

Metzler, Mennonite Life Visitors Center administrator Paul Garber and three other staff members will serve as instructors for the workshop.

“Staff will be there floating around, working with people and answering questions,” said Metzler. “We would love for people to engage in the story of the tabernacle in a fresh, new way.”

Mennonite Life was established in 1958 as the

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society. Mennonite Life, which is sprawled over two campuses and is supported by 20 staff members and countless volunteers, welcomes 45,000 visitors from Lancaster County and beyond each year.

“Not enough people know about our mission,” said Metzler. “There are many people who know we are here, but they don’t know what we do

or what we’re about. Some people know pieces of the Mennonite story. We want to help churches and families know how we can offer hope and healing.”

“Our mission is to share the story of how God journeys with His people,” she continued. “We want to share that story with local people and beyond. We want to share our Mennonite life and Mennonite story.”

Agriculture makes its mark on Lancaster County

Every five years, the United States Department of Agriculture conducts its Census of Agriculture, collecting information about the country’s farming activities. The most recent census, which examined the state of farming during 2022, revealed the following facts.

• Pennsylvania led the U.S. in the percentage of its producers who were under the age of 35 - 12.7% - and Lancaster County was one of only two counties in the nation with more than 1,000 young producers. (Lancaster County had 2,057.)

• Pennsylvania boasted 49,053 farms, and Lancaster County had 4,680 farms - 9.5% of the farms in the state.

• Four percent of Lancaster

County’s farms operated organically.

• Eleven percent of the county’s farms sold directly to consumers.

• Ninety-eight percent of the county’s farms were family farms.

• The total market value of products sold by Lancaster County farms in 2022 was $1.85 billion, accounting for 18% of agriculture sales in Pennsylvania.

• Lancaster County’s top crops in acres were corn for grain, 95,549; forage, 65,142; soybeans for beans, 51,695; corn for silage/ greenchop, 35,988; and wheat for grain, 24,101.

• The county’s harvest included 847,584 tons of corn for silage/greenchop; over 17 million bushels of corn for grain; over 2 million bushels of wheat for

grain; 442,901 bushels of barley for grain; and 42,221 bushels of oats for grain.

• Lancaster County’s livestock totaled 13.7 million layers; close to 10.4 million broilers and other meattype chickens; close to 7 million pullets (young hens); 322,153 hogs and pigs; 235,758 turkeys; and 182,218 cattle and calves.

• Approximately 82% of all agricultural products in Lancaster County were livestock, poultry, and their products; about 18% were crop related.

• Lancaster County ranked No. 1 in Pennsylvania in many agriculture categories, including total market value of agricultural products sold and total livestock, poultry, and products sold. The county had the highest sales in the state in grains,

oilseeds, dry beans, and dry peas; tobacco; and other crops and hay. Within the livestock category, it leads the state in sales of poultry and eggs; cattle and calves; milk from cows; hogs and pigs; and sheep, goats, wool, mohair, and milk. The county is seventh in the U.S. for poultry and eggs.

• Lancaster County also earned high ranks among the 3,144 counties in the United States: seventh in poultry and eggs and 10th in overall livestock, poultry, and products.

• There were approximately 56 commercial chickens (layers, pullets, and meat-type) per person in Lancaster County in 2022, according to estimated population information from the Census Bureau.

Ways to support local farmers

Farming has never been a vocation for individuals looking for easy work. Farmers typically work long hours, braving the elements regardless of how unpleasant the weather may be.

All that hard work is intended to ensure that individuals who live in rural, urban and suburban communities have constant, readily available access to healthy foods. Such devotion merits support, and there are many things consumers can do to show their appreciation for local farmers.

• Buy fresh foods at a local farmers market. Farmers markets are many foodies’ favorite places, but they aren’t exclusive to individuals with a passion for food. Everyone needs to eat, so why not eat foods grown locally, which are often more fresh and appetizing than imported fruits and vegetables? Additionally, people looking to buy more than fresh fruits and vegetables may find an assortment of other delectable items at local farmers

markets, where anything from homemade tomato sauces to locally raised fresh beef and pork might be on sale.

• Order directly from local farms. Some farmers have embraced the e-commerce revolution and have begun selling the foods they grow to consumers via their own websites. Research local farms and determine if it’s possible to buy directly from them. Farms may offer delivery or pickup, and consumers can enjoy fresh foods even more knowing that they helped farmers earn higher profits by buying directly from them.

• Check labels before buying in local grocery stores. Packaging labels indicate where fruits and vegetables came from. When possible, choose items produced by local farmers. These products may include fruits, vegetables, meat, or even desserts like pies. Locally produced foods often taste more fresh than items sent from overseas or distant farms,

and consumers will likely feel better knowing they helped to support local farmers.

• Spread the word. Get the word out after a satisfying experience with local farms and farmers. Whether it’s buying food from farms or enjoying family days that let kids enjoy time on the farm, sharing positive experiences via social media or word of mouth can be a great way to inspire neighbors to support local farmers, as well. Consumers can do much to support hardworking local farmers. In addition to feeling good about supporting their rural neighbors, consumers can also enjoy meals featuring locally grown, fresh foods.

PA Preferred highlights local touch

The benefits of buying local are many. In addition to financially supporting the region’s economy, buying local gives shoppers the opportunity to obtain fresh goods, including produce and dairy and meat products.

Thanks to PA Preferred, which was launched in 2004 as a brand identity for farmers and agribusinesses, it’s easy for consumers to identify and purchase agricultural goods that have been grown and processed in Pennsylvania. The PA Preferred Act was signed into law in 2011, officially making PA Preferred the commonwealth’s branding

initiative for local food and farms.

Products marked with the PA Preferred logo, or the ingredients used to make them, have been grown, harvested, or produced in Pennsylvania. When shoppers choose PA Preferred products, they have assurance that they are providing direct support to Pennsylvania farmers and agribusinesses, all while helping to strengthen the state’s economy.

PA Preferred also offers several other programs, including Homegrown by Heroes and Farm to School.

Homegrown by Heroes was founded by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture in 2013 and was implemented in Pennsylvania in 2015 for PA Preferred members who are also veterans. The program features its own logo, which these

members can add to their products. The Homegrown by Heroes designation differentiates veteran-owned farms and agribusinesses and allows consumers to intentionally support them. To learn more, visit www.papreferred.com/ homegrown-by-heroes.

Preparing the Way, founded by Randy and Bonnie Martin of New Holland, includes a number of efforts concentrated in Thika, Kenya, Africa. In the 1990s, Randy began leading outreaches to Kenya, and in 2015, the Martins began working toward full-time ministry in Africa. Among the Preparing the Way ministries is the Africa Association of Bible Schools (AABS), of which Randy is the national director for Kenya. The Martins also work through local churches to help farmers to improve milk and crop production and to teach efficient construction methods to help increase worker pay. The ministry also organizes conferences to train leaders and pastors. The Martins travel with a portable stage and loudspeakers to do open air crusades. More information about Preparing the Way may be found at www .ptwministries.org.

“This is a convergence of stories,” noted Smucker, who pointed out that Alliance Network, Preparing the Way, the three musical acts, the food trucks, the venue, and

Smucker is looking forward to presenting this year’s event with the changes. “We are building on the foundation from last year, and I think it will be an even better experience,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to being with the community again.” Smucker added that the Good Shepherd Chapel can seat about 1,200. “We are hoping for a better turnout and more support from the community,” he said. “Whatever is able to be funded out of that is beautiful.”

Alliance Network works to bring together entrepreneurs, missions leaders, and organizations with the goal of collaborating for God’s greater purpose. Readers who would like to purchase tickets for the event may visit www.allianceus.org/ community-concert-fund raiser. Children age 10 and under will be admitted free of charge. Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses, and Smucker is also seeking volunteers for the event. Those who wish to sponsor the event or volunteer may email dave@allianceus.org.
