CMBC To Host Global Outreach Conference BY ANN MEAD ASH

“For people in the community who might be interested in coming … if they have an interest in learning more about the global church and how the Word of God is getting out in different areas, this would be a good opportunity,” said Chris Lenhart, pastor of Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC). Lenhart and members of CMBC’s global ministries team are looking forward to the church’s annual Global Outreach Conference, which will be held from Sunday, March 20 through Sunday, March 27, at the church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise. The event will include electives, prayer time, a youth night, and more. CMBC has partnered with ServeNow and Global Disciples to present the conference, which will kick off on the morning of March 20, with speakers at the 9 a.m. worship service and during Sunday school at 10:30 a.m. At 6 p.m. that evening, a picture report will be

given, and electives will begin at 6:30 p.m. “A picture report is a 30-minute presentation that describes (the speaker’s) ministry environment and explores the obstacles to sharing the Gospel,” explained Lenhart. Speakers will include Ben Foley, Les Yoder, Kendall Keeler, Andy Gordley, Emily Rishel, and Tefera Bekere, among others. Each evening from March 21 through Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m., speakers from around the world will give presentations. “In most cases (speakers) will be here in person,” shared Lenhart. “A few will be virtual.” Lenhart said that speakers will represent Ethiopia, the Middle East, Uganda, Costa Rica, Asia, Moldova, and Alaska. “Some (speakers) are missionaries, and others provide support for missionaries on the field,” said Lenhart. Also, at 7:30 p.m. each evening from March 21 through 24, two electives will be offered. “One will be in the building only, and the other will be live on youtube and in the building,” explained Lenhart.

Organizers at The Factory Ministries are hoping to grow the spring fundraiser they call B.I.G. Shots. “We had 22 (participants) last year,” said Shira Zimmerman, director of community resources for the organization. “This year we are shooting for 40.” Caleb Stiger, of the Baron Insurance Group (BIG) Gordonville office, founded the event five years ago. “(Stiger) is a fundraising champion for this event,” said Kate Lab, who does development for The Factory. “He’s all in.” See The Factory pg 10

Stars in Space Camp will be offered for two different age groups. Children ages 3 to 6 will meet at Cavod Academy, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, from 9 a.m. to noon from Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 15. Youth ages 7 to 12 will meet on the same days at the same location from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. “(Stars in Space Camp) is really a great way for a student to explore the arts,” said Dienner, who noted that the program will include tumbling, music, crafts, and dance, along with devotions and worship. Musical theater camp will give students ages 10 to 18 a chance to take part in the pro-

duction “Seussical Jr.” directed by Stephanie Morales. The camp will run on weekdays from July 11 to Friday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. Students will audition for the show, but each camper will be guaranteed a part. “(This camp) has been such a valuable experience for kids,” said Dienner. “It gives them a chance to perform on a full stage with costumes and lighting in a real theater.” The camp will include devotions, small group time, and opportunities to chat and pray. Performance of the show, which will be open to the public, will be held on Saturday, July

23, and Sunday, July 24, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. Tickets will be necessary to attend. A Summer Dance Intensive program for intermediate and advanced dancers will be held from Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the academy. The program, which is for students age 12 and up, will bring in guest artists to instruct the students. Camp Create is specifically designed for those age 13 and up with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Trained teachers work with the students in dance, movement, and artwork. The camp will be

held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. from Monday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 5, and a performance will be given at 6 p.m. on Aug. 5. “This has been a tremendous program,” said Dienner of Camp Create. According to Dienner, each camp includes activities designed to help students find their own identity. “The strength of Cavod is believing in each person and pulling out their God-given gifts and talents,” she noted. Stream Repair Webinar Series Planned Penn State Extension will offer the Backyard Stream Repair Series via Zoom from 2 to 3:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 15 to 31, except March 22. Braves Qualify for States as Fourth Seed

The Pequea Valley Braves were coming off a 43-30 victory from earlier in the week when they took on Trinity in a District Three Class 3A girls’ basketball semifinal match on Friday, February 25. That first-round win on February 22 was at home where the third-seeded Braves defeated sixth-seeded Upper Dauphin. “In the Upper Dauphin game, we played an up-tempo game, and they were getting tired,” Jason McDonald, the Braves head coach, explained. “We did not play particularly well on the offensive end, but our defense kept the game out of reach for them. They were out of sync all night and that played into our hands.” Trinity, the number two team in the district, limited the Braves (13-12) to 13 firsthalf points en route to a 5121 victory, sending the Braves

to a third-place consolation game against number one seed Brandywine Heights. The Bullets lost to York Catholic in their semifinal game on Friday 52-44. Sarah Arment and Shania Stoltzfus each scored five points to top the Braves in scoring on Friday night at Trinity. The Hillers, who improved to 17-7, were led by Adrianna Stricek’s 18-point performance. She poured in three three-point baskets in the game. “ We couldn’t make the shots,” McDonald said. “We were able to get the possessions, but we did not hit anything. “Their height was also an issue,” continued the coach. “They also had lots of second chance opportunities. We played hard, but just did not match up well with their size.” The Braves had set goals at the start of the season, McDonald explained. And

reaching the district semifinals helped Pequea’s program continue achieving milestones this season. “ We had goals to make leagues, districts and states for this season,” said McDonald. “Now it’s just about us making plays.” The Brave’s offense was on a better pace in the consolation contest at Brandywine Heights on March 1. However, the home team’s 13-2 run in the second quarter helped the Bullets hang on for a 5440 win. The Braves thus earned their ticket to the PIAA Class 3A state playoffs as the fourth seed out of District Three. Arment led the Braves with 12 points on the night, including a three-point field goal. Rebecca Cox tallied seven points while Chavelle Fisher and Rebecca Cox each hit two three pointers and put in six points each on the night.

The New Holland Area Historical Society invites local residents to take a trip through Lancaster on the Old Lincoln Highway (Route 30) via a presentation by Benton Webber of Manheim Township, who has sleuthed out the original locations of 40 concrete marker posts placed along the Lincoln Highway where it traveled through Lancaster in 1928. Webber will give his presentation in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, March 17, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but attendees will be required to wear masks. Webber embarked on a journey to find the presentday whereabouts of all 40 of the marker posts after obtaining a copy of the 1928 list describing the original location of each marker. He also found an updated list from 1960 that noted that 22 had remained in their original locations that time. “There is one today in its original position,” said Webber, who noted that the post is at Third and Chestnut streets in Columbia. Webber visited the post and took measurements, and he had a portable replica built. In September 2021, he began taking the replica to the original locations as he found them and posting photos from each excursion on Facebook. He plans to complete the project with a Facebook post on May 28. The markers were put up on a single day in September 1928 by Lancaster Boy Scouts. A representative of the Lincoln Highway Association, an organization founded in 1915 that was dedicated to making public improvements, selected the locations for the posts. “They were trying to figure

As director of music ministries at Lititz Moravian Church and assistant professor of choral studies at Millersville University, Gemmell has spent many years researching and editing a collection of the music of Herbst, a significant composer in the Moravian church tradition. Keener studied at Eastern Mennonite University and James Madison University, and he has performed around the world. Masks are required. A freewill offering will be received to support the MCCL

Chamber Choir and its summer international tour to the Czech Republic in partnership with Eastern Mennonite Missions’ GO! program. There is a recommended donation. While in the Czech Republic, MCCL Chamber Choir high school singers will perform music and learn about God’s work in the community.

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) will host a benefit concert featuring music from the Czech Republic and the Moravian Church on Sunday, March 13, at 4 p.m. The event will take place at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-in-Hand. The concert will highlight music from the Czech Republic and the Moravian Church, including “Hymns To Be Sung at the Pianoforte” by Moravian composer Johannes Herbst, a piano transcription of the orchestral piece “The Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana, and selections by Czech composers Antonin Dvorak, Gustav Mahler, and Bohuslav Jan Martinu. The York Kennel Club, Delaware County Kennel Club, and Lancaster Kennel Club will present the Celtic Classic Annual All Breed Dog Show, one of the largest shows on the East Coast. The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) will offer two $1,000 scholarships to Lancaster County high school seniors in 2022. Applications will be accepted from students continuing their education in the 2022-23 school year with the intent of majoring in a curriculum that focuses on natural resources and/or conservation. Examples of acceptable programs of studies include environmental sciences; wildlife and/or fisheries biology; and environmental resource management. The program must lead to a postsecondary degree such as an associate degree or baccalaureate degree. Selection will be determined based on past performance and activities, current school and community involvement, future purpose and direction, and communication skills. Prior to the final selection, the scholarship committee will interview the top candidates. The completed application must be received in the LCCD office by Thursday, March 31. This year’s B.I.G. Shots, an event designed to bring together local businesses in a one-day free-throw competition will be held on Friday, March 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each participant will be given a 20-minute appointment to shoot 100 free throws. “Families of participants can come cheer for them,” said Lab, who noted that food and other fun activities will be available for spectators. Zimmerman said that participants are asked to garner sponsorships of a certain amount per shot or a flat rate. A gift card will be awarded to the participant who makes the most shots, and a prize will be given to the participant who raises the most funds. A leader board will be set up in The Factory gymnatorium, where three portable hoops will be available to participants during the event. Winners will be announced at the end of the day. That’s the heart of the event.” In the past, many participants have represented local businesses, and this year Zimmerman is excited to have a competitor representing Pequea Valley School District. The three organizations will share an executive leadership team, led by Steve Lindsey, current CEO of Garden Spot Communities and a thought leader in senior living. Lindsey will be joined at the executive level by current leaders of the three affiliating organizations. From Liberty Lutheran, Joan Myers will become chief operating officer and John Barnum will be chief financial officer. Lois Dostalik of ForgeWorks/Garden Spot will become chief culture officer. Also from Garden Spot, Scott

Miller will be chief marketing officer and Steve Jeffrey will be chief strategy officer. Chris Reighard of ALSM will be vice president of finance. Ilumin will be headquartered in New Holland. Liberty Lutheran and ALSM will continue to maintain corporate offices in Ambler and Altoona, respectively. Patricia Savage, CEO of ALSM, and Luanne Fisher, CEO of Liberty Lutheran, will step down from their positions when the affiliation takes effect this spring. Both intend to continue to serve in the not-for-profit sector. Fisher noted that the three organizations engaged in thorough research and analysis when evaluating the potential for affiliation. The affiliation was approved unanimously by the boards of all three organizations. When the affiliation takes effect, Ilumin will be one of the largest 50 senior living organizations in the country. When audiences come to a performance of “Songs for a New World,” they can expect something a little different than a traditional musical. “It’s like paying for one show, but you’re actually seeing 15,” said Wally Calderon, who will direct the show for Servant Stage.
