A question for Christians

Inexplaining why Eric Metaxas was chosen as the speaker for the Linville Hill Christian School spring banquet, head of school Matt

Buckwalter quoted the school’s mission statement. “Linville Hill is a community of faith where students learn to think deeply about who God is as they discover their God-given purpose in preparation for a lifetime of service to the King,” said Buckwalter. Explaining that a few of the author’s many books are utilized in the high school curriculum, Buckwalter added, “(Metaxas’ words) help students think about looking back to those who’ve gone before us for answers to (the question), ‘How do we live in a time when maybe the prevailing values of the culture are out of sync with the heroes of faith from old?’ We need someone who can help draw our young people back to those voices.”

Metaxas will be the featured speaker at the Linville Hill 2023 spring banquet on Tuesday, March 28, at Beechdale Farms, 458 Beechdale Road, Bird-in-Hand. A meet-and-greet will be

held from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Appetizers will be served at 5:15 p.m., and dinner, which will feature pot roast and chicken cordon bleu, will begin at 6 p.m.

Metaxas is a New York Times bestselling author, known for his books

“If You Can Keep It,” “Bonhoeffer,” and “Amazing Grace,” among others. He has also appeared as a cultural commentator on CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, and he is the host of “The Eric Metaxas Show,” a daily syndicated radio program.

Buckwalter heard Metaxas speak twice since fall of 2022, and he was impressed. “Metaxas is a voice that is so important for our church and communities to hear,” said Buckwalter, who noted an effort is underway to provide sponsorship for the banquet to the pastors of the 70 congregations represented by Linville students. Delving into Metaxas’ past, Buckwalter pointed out that the author’s parents were immigrants from Greece and Germany who met in an English class. “(Metaxas) has a very tangible grip on what America stands for (because) his family came here for that,” said Buckwalter, who called Metaxas a “phenomenal

historian.” Buckwalter also noted that Metaxas’ most recent book, “A Letter to the American Church,” is “a wake-up call for Christians to think about what they are doing with their voices.” “Are they sitting silently or using the liberty this nation provides to speak in accordance with their convictions?” Buckwalter asked.

Linville Hill was started by a group of local families nearly 80 years ago. The elementary school at 295 S. Kinzer Road, Paradise, currently serves kindergarten through fifth grade. The upper school, which now serves grades six through 12, is located at 835 Houston Run, Gap. The upper school was first envisioned in 2016, with an internship program as a central feature. The program takes students to local businesses and organizations for six hours each Friday for 12 weeks in the fall semester and again in the spring. The program took off with 30 students the first semester it was offered. The two campuses now have an enrollment of 480 students. Sponsorships and tickets are available at www.linvillehill.org or at http://one.bidpal.net/lhcsspring23.

Photographic history

For Gap resident Brett Snyder, acting vice president with the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, history is not merely a hobby. Snyder’s business, PAST paper.com, deals in rare magazines and other vintage paper items. Snyder first became interested in the life of noted Lancastrian H. Clifton Thorbahn about 10 years ago when he came across some photos and clippingsof the man mounted on a board. “It was band and orchestra stuff and WGAL radio photos,”

Building a legacy

Servants Inc. has its roots in a mission trip that founder and CEO Trent Davis took to Guatemala around the year 2000. Davis wanted to share his experience with others, and he began coordinating mission trips, but that was just the beginning. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina inspired Davis to do home repair work stateside. Flooding in York County in 2010 brought the program home. Servants now has a presence in Adams and Lancaster counties as well. In Lancaster County, Servants is mostly active in the

ELANCO area as well as Columbia and Marietta. Servants Inc. completed more than 110 projects and had more than 10,000 volunteer hours total in 2022.

To raise funds to help area families in need, Servants holds a spring gala. The 2023 event, which will be the fifth for the organization, will be held on Friday, April 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Stone Mill Inn, 305 S. Broad St., Hallam. The event will include a cocktail hour, a sit-down multicourse meal, videos, live and silent auctions, and live music, and Davis will give an update on the work of the ministry.

said Snyder. “I thought, ‘There’s a story there,’ but I put it aside.’” A year ago, Snyder’s work brought him some copies of Lancaster Magazine, published from the 1950s to the 1970s. “The editor and owner was a guy named Thorbahn,” recalled Snyder. “I thought, ‘I know this name.’ I looked at the scrapbook boards, and it was all his stuff.”

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Snyder will present the results of his research into Thorbahn’s life in the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) program titled “H. Clifton Thorbahn: Lancaster Jazz Pioneer, Historian, Editor, and Publisher” on Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The public is invited to attend.

“When I started putting it all together, I thought, ‘What a fascinating life this guy had,’” said Snyder of Thorbahn, who as a young man played checkers with Groucho Marx and then started one of the first jazz bands in Lancaster. “The band went on tour and played Warren G. Harding’s inaugural ball,” reported Snyder. When Thorbahn returned to Lancaster, he managed other bands. Snyder noted that Thorbahn also played the piano at silent movie theaters. “He was one of those guys who could play any song,” said Snyder, who added that Thorbahn’s father was orchestra director for the Lancaster schools. “There was a lot of music (talent) in the family,” Snyder said.

Thorbahn also dabbled in education, serving as assis-

tant principal at Salisbury High School and principal of Strasburg High School. In the summer of 1926, Thorbahn moved in a different direction when he co-wrote the Lancaster Pageant of Liberty, which was held at Franklin & Marshall. “It was a big historical pageant about Lancaster and the American Revolution,” said Snyder, who noted that the show featured 600 singers and 400 dancers. Thorbahn segued into working for WGAL radio, where he produced, directed, and acted.

In addition to musical talents, Thorbahn began working in publishing, creating the first tourist guide for the Lancaster County, and writing history features for Lancaster Sunday News. Snyder added that Thorbahn was involved with a number of area historical societies. “He had his fingers in anything that was history.”

By the end of the 1960s, Thorbahn was ready to retire, and he died in 1983. Calling Stone Mill a “gorgeous” location, Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants, said that gala activities changed somewhat after a virtual event was held in 2021. “2021 was the first time we introduced an auction,” said Cotton, who noted that an auctioneer hosted the event and videos were shown. Both those features became part of the live auction in 2022. Because the cocktail hour was successful last year, the 2023 gala will begin with wine and select craft beers.

“(During that time), people talked to each other and looked at the silent auction items,” said

Cotton. “It was more relaxing.” Cotton pointed out that the food at the event is often a highlight and that attendees often comment on how good it is. The auctioneer who handled the virtual fundraiser will be the event’s master of ceremonies. “The program is pretty light,” said Cotton, who noted that the videos are created with the audience in mind. “People might not know everything about Servants, so the information that’s presented gives people an introduction to what we do and some of the impact that we have and want to continue to have on the communities

that we serve.”

Silent auction items will include a number of themed baskets. Live auction items have traditionally included a beach house vacation at the Outer

Banks and a catered meal by a Servants employee. “He is an excellent chef,” said Cotton. “He makes barbecue and smoker (items).” Other auction items will include a Mission Destiny

Cotton pointed out that one item will be a private dinner for eight at the Stone Mill Inn. “It includes a five-course dinner paired with wine and prepared by an exclusive culinary team,” he said.

While the gala has traditionally been held inside the Stone Mill Inn, this year a heated tent will serve as the dining area. The use of the tent will expand the number of people who can attend to about 175. Cotton said that the organization hopes to raise $50,000 to be used to “minister to the spiritual and physical needs of hurt-

ing people in our local community, across the USA, and around the world.”

Braves top York Catholic for District bronze

There are some victories that come easily. There are nights when earning a win can be an uphill battle.

On Tuesday night, February 28, Pequea Valley hosted the District Three Class 3A girls’ basketball third-place consolation game against York Catholic. The Braves overcame an early deficit and some sloppy play to eke out a 59-58 victory, claiming third place in the district.

“At the beginning we came out a little frantic,” said Shania Stoltzfus, who led Pequea Valley with 24 points. “We didn’t have our spacing on offense and on defense they were getting open shots. We got our composure back.”

Head coach Jason McDonald echoed those statements.

“It looked like we came out too hyper,” he stated. “Once we settled in, we looked fine. But it took us that first quarter to settle in. Once we did that, we started looking like us.

“They pressured us,” McDonald added. “But we were off our normal balance on offense. It took us a quarter, a quarter and a half to fix that.

The Braves (22-4) turned the ball over seven times in the first quarter, including two traveling calls. The Fighting Irish (17-8) built a 17-10 lead. The Braves did battle back to even the score at 19-

19 with 5:48 remaining in the second quarter.

“We started getting a little aggressive,” senior Sarah Arment said when asked about the turnaround. “Sometimes it takes a little to feel how the other team works and to analyze how they play. We can adjust after that.”

Shania Stoltzfus, who led all scorers with 24 points on the night, hit three of her five three-point baskets in the second stanza. After an Amanda Reed (10 pts) basket gave York Catholic a 26-23 lead, Stoltzfus drilled her third trey of the period to tie it up again with two minutes left until halftime.

Arment helped lead the offense early in the second half, making a pair of baskets to keep Pequea close. Freshman Katie Stoltzfus made another basket while Shania Stoltzfus scored the Braves’ next 10 points to give the home team its first lead of the night - 43-41 with 1:30 left to play in the third quarter. The lead came on a basket plus a foul shot.

“I just kept shooting and they kept going in,” Stoltzfus said. “Everybody was saying ‘Shania is hot; Shania is hot.’ And my teammates kept feeding me.”

“We saw she was hot, so Shania kept getting the ball,” McDonald said. “You saw the confidence grow with her. Other kids also stepped up. Everybody played hard and

did well.”

“They just kept hitting three’s,” Stoltzfus said of York Catholic, who went 8-for-13 in long-range shots.

“We played hard, and the shots started falling in for us. And he [McDonald] told us to limit turnovers - to be smart with the ball.”

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Braves led by a 46-45 margin. Arment made three more baskets and connected on three key free throws down the stretch.

Asked about coming through in those pressure situations, the senior said, “Just like practice. I was thinking during the game, ‘Just like practice.’ It was form, followthrough and if I missed it, go get the rebound.

“Breathe, go through my routine,” she added. “I look up and imagine it going in. Focus.”

“That’s what seniors do, they make the clutch foul shots,” McDonald said. “She also came up with some big baskets.”

The Irish still had some fight in them, grabbing two momentary one-point leads in the fourth quarter. Their final advantage was 49-48 with 4:43 left in the game. Arment’s 2-for2 free throw shooting with 1:24 to play, padded the lead to 56-52. She made one more free throw in the final minute while freshman Janae Patterson (11 pts) added a crucial basket. How crucial?

Meredith Smith’s three-pointer cut the lead to 59-58 - the eventual margin of victory for the Braves.

The victory means that Pequea Valley heads into the PIAA Class 3A state playoffs as the third seed out of District Three.

“It means a lot, especially doing it in my senior year,” Arment said. “It’s a great experience - the memories I’ll have as a senior.”

Realizing that the state playoff games are played at neutral sites, an emotional Arment added, “This was my last home game. Playing in this atmosphere with my family and all our fans was very special to me.”

The Braves’ leaders also included Katie Stoltzfus scoring eight points, Patterson dishing out eight assists and Shania Stoltzfus grabbing six rebounds.

Bre Beiler tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Arment grabbed four rebounds. Beiler, Arment and Morgan Graham each had two steals.

Paige O’Brien led York Catholic with 22 points, including four three-pointers.

The reason Pequea Valley was playing in this consolation contest was a 53-15 loss at Columbia in the district semifinals on Friday, February 24. Of the Braves’ four losses this season, three were at the hands of the LancasterLebanon League rival Crimson Tide, including two during the regular season.

“We struggle on their court,” McDonald said. “We

turned the ball over too many times.

“We played hard, but didn’t shoot the ball well,” he added. “Our defense did well, but we had a lot of turnovers, and our shots weren’t going in for us. It was one of those things where once you hit one or

two, then everybody gets going.”

Columbia played Lancaster Catholic on the same night as the Braves’ third-place game.

postcards on a wide variety of topics. Each meeting features a specific theme and includes a talk from a guest speaker who focuses on that theme.

In January, the club creates a schedule of which themes will be incorporated throughout the year, and the topic of

the club’s meetings can be anything from railroads to boats to hometowns. For its meeting in January, the club had members share postcards relating to their favorite holidays. On Feb. 20, the topic of the meeting was cartoons and humor, and attendees participated in a member’s market to buy and sell postcards.

Jere Greider of Mountville has been a member of the postcard club for over 20 years, first becoming interested in them while adding to his collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. After Greider found a Coca-Cola postcard, he began to shift his focus to collecting postcards from around Lancaster County.

Lancaster County Postcard Club members peruse different postcards during their February meeting.

Greider is now a postcard dealer and participates in several yearly shows where postcard enthusiasts come together to buy and sell items for their collections. During the shows, around 25 postcard dealers present boxes of cards that are organized by topic. A buyer will often look for postcards from specific locations, such as his or her hometown or alma mater. Before the advent of different technologies in the 19th century, postcards were a way for travelers to remember a location they visited without a camera. Many people also used them to communicate with others who lived nearby before the invention of the telephone, as a way to stay connected with each other. Today, postcards are primarily found in tourist attractions, but many vintage cards still circulate in antique stores and on the internet.

“Postcards cover every topic imaginable,” Greider said. “We have so many antique stores and outlets here in central Pennsylvania where you can find them.” Besides combing through local antiques stores, Greider often finds items to add to his collection by searching for postcards on websites like eBay. Throughout his many years spent collecting postcards, Greider has learned more about the market and what people are seeking. Currently, he is focused on collecting postcards that originate from the Mountville area and the surrounding towns.

During the March meeting, set for Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will share postcards from various places of worship. For more
