Joyce Hanson has been a volunteer income tax preparer with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a free tax preparation service administered by the United Way, for about eight years. Seated at a computer in the VITA Paradise location in the Together Community Center (TCC), Hanson said she hopes area residents who qualify will come in to have their taxes completed for a variety of reasons. “The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) funds (VITA) for accurate returns, but clients (who use VITA services) may pay less tax or get money back,” said Hanson, who explained that completing forms with regard to education and child credits can be daunting. “We are aware of those credits that are complicated to complete,” she noted, adding that because the VITA service is free,

clients will get to keep more of money they get back from the IRS should they rate a return, rather than having to pay a tax preparation service. VITA will offer free tax return preparation at TCC, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. through Tuesday, April 14. According to Cliff Mast, who has been preparing taxes with VITA at TCC for four years, the Paradise location opened on Jan. 28. “No one could file electronically until (Jan. 27),” said Mast. “A lot of companies aren’t required to get all the information out until the end of (January).” To qualify for free tax preparation, a taxpayer can earn up to $62,000 a year. Mast explained that residents who qualify financially but have rental income or large investments cannot have taxes prepared at the location. See VITA pg 5

Jennie Straub, client services and outreach specialist at Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, is concerned by the percentage of parents who are unaware of tech abuse in teenage relationships. Some researchers put that statistic at more than 80%, and that spurs Straub to let parents and their children know that it does not have to be that way. During February, which is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, she is especially keen to get the word out about a curriculum Cornerstone offers to both students and parents.
