After half a decade directing musicals at Pequea Valley High School (PVHS), Nathan Bankert has touched upon a variety of genres starting with “Phantom of the Opera” through 2019’s classic “Oklahoma!” This year, PVHS will stage “Grease.” “I thought I would do something with a different musical style,” said Bankert. “I hadn’t done a rock show at PVHS.” Bankert also noted that he wanted a show that reflected the personalities of the many Class of 2020 members in the cast. “I thought it was time for an upbeat, energetic, fun show, and I have an upbeat, energetic, fun senior class,” he said.

Sparks fly when Danny and Sandy, who never expected to see each other again, discover that they attend the same school. When Caleb Stiger opened the Baron Insurance Group (BIG) Gordonville office, he was looking for a way to reach out to the community. “We believe in family,” said TPH men’s ministry director Lanny Millette. “The (students) come out of institutions, so we want them to experience a more intimate family-style setting.”

Lloyd Hoover, TPH executive director, echoed Millette’s thoughts. “The potential of family is to be a place where you’re able to grow in a healthy way and find healing,” he said. “(Still Waters) is designed to create an atmosphere for healing and building of relationships.” The completion of the second student house at Still Waters in the fall will be the culmination of a more than 15-year dream for the ministry.

Marking the opening of the first house at the Still Waters campus, which is due to be completed by early March, will be just one of the goals of the annual TPH banquet, which will celebrate the theme “Captivity to Destiny” when it is held on Friday, March 13, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

The special guest speaker at the event will be Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown and founder with his wife, Gladys, of CCARS: Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services in Leola. Mwangi is a graduate of Lancaster Bible College and a board-certified addictions counselor who has worked in the field of addictions since 2006. At CCARS, Mwangi’s goal is to provide professional services in an atmosphere of Christian love and compassion.

houses, will be for students in their first 90-day phase of recovery when care is intensive. “The houses we currently have (in Leola and New Holland) will be phase two houses, (where students are) moving into the community with support and structure,” explained Millette. “Phase three (features) discipleship houses with minimal structure but (still with) support and drug testing.”

Rob Weatherholtz, men’s associate ministry director, pointed to the riverbank between the house and the Conestoga and commented on the area’s importance to the organization’s goals. “When we work on family counseling, we will work on the family dynamic too,” he said, noting that a volleyball net, horseshoes, and a campfire pit are all planned for the area.

“We want this to be an atmosphere of healing,” he said.

“That’s why we called it Still Waters, (which is) from Psalm 23,” he added, paraphrasing, “He leads us beside still waters and restores our souls.”

TPH hopes to have a similar ministry for women, which will be called The House of Ruth, up and running in Leola by the end of March. The ministry is also launching Weather-All Home Services to provide sustainable support to the organization.

Hoover gestured across the river and noted that his father’s family’s farm was located in the area. The land on which Still Waters is being built once belonged to the Weatherholtz family. “The history here is part of the story of this place,” Hoover said. “(Still Waters) is about transformation and new beginnings - a new fresh purpose for this ground.”

Cavod To Take “Cinderella” Beyond The Fairy Tale

Monica DePaul, director of the upcoming musical production of “Cinderella” at Cavod Theatre, admits she has not always been a fan of fairy tales in recent years.

“They were fun when I was 8, but now I want to watch a girl who has dreams beyond the prince,” mused DePaul. Fortunately, the 2013 Broadway revival production of “Cinderella” gave DePaul a heroine with depth. “We still have a prince and a love story, but there’s selfdiscovery for Cinderella in this version and friendship and forgiveness,” said DePaul. “Even with a modern retelling, it doesn’t lose that old-fashioned charm.”

“Cinderella” will play at the Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 28 and March 6; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 29 and March 7; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 1 and 8.

“Cinderella” is based on the ageold tale of the same name. This version focuses on the main character, calling her Ella, played by Hannah Rau, but adds revolutionary JeanMichael, played by Joe Kelly, and a woman known as Marie, played by Kylie Nabers, who will transform on stage into the fairy godmother.

Meanwhile, the prince, played by Alexander Weaver and known as Topher (short for Christopher), worries that slaying dragons is not important enough work for a future king.

According to DePaul, the cast of about 20 is also taking to the unique takes included in the revised show. “There’s humor,” stated DePaul. “When people think of Cinderella, they don’t think of the comedy, but this version is very funny. (The cast is) embracing it, and I am loving what they’re doing.”

DePaul noted that the comedy should appeal to both adults and children. “There is satire,” she said, noting that the show plays with stereotypical characters in fun ways. “(Jean-Michael) is a political activist, and he wants to call the people to focus on what’s important, (such as) land or food, but the prince invites everyone to the ball and that overtakes (the activist’s) stump speech. Something superficial overtakes what

The production also utilizes physical movement and music to tell parts of the story. “We have some fabulous dancers, and we are using their dance ability to create the magic of the transformations,” said DePaul. “There will be dancers in costumes that suggest animal characters who through their dancing become footmen,” she explained.

As a Rodgers and Hammerstein show, “Cinderella” delivers a variety of music, much of which audience members will recognize. Ella will sing “In My Own Little Corner.” Other familiar numbers will include “The Prince Is Giving a Ball” and “Impossible/It’s Possible,” sung by the fairy godmother.

Hannah and Alex will also sing “Ten Minutes Ago” about the joys of spontaneous love. Newer songs will include “Me, Who Am I?” and “Now Is the Time,” which will be sung by Joe. DePaul hopes individuals who see the show will relate to the transformations they see in the characters on stage. “I really want the audience (members) to find themselves in Cinderella’s shoes and know they’re worthy,” said DePaul. “(Ella) struggles with her self-worth, (but) her fairy godmother is there to let her know she is beautiful and capable and smart. She ends up helping to bring change to her kingdom. We all have the potential to be beyond ourselves.”

Documentary To Be Screened The On Screen/In Person series will return to the Arts at Millersville on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Ware Center, 42 N. “When the sun comes up and people start showing up, that’s my favorite part of the day,” said Ivan Fisher, reflecting on the annual spring donation and consignment sale hosted by the Strasburg Fire Company, which typically draws several thousand people. “And you start smelling the chicken barbecue,” he added.

Ivan is the chair of the fire company’s sale committee, which plans the spring donation and consignment sale, also called a mud sale.

The 46th annual event will be held on Friday, Feb. 28, at 4:30 p.m. and continue on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 8 a.m. at the fire company, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg. This is the third year for the Friday evening event.

“We really like it,” Ivan said.

“We’re trying to make it like a family night out.”

Crafts and small quilt-related items will be sold at auction on Feb. 28. The menu for the evening will include shrimp, french fries, sausage sandwiches, and locally made ice cream.

Multiple auctions will run simultaneously on Feb. 29. About 500 quilts, crafts, antiques, new and used carriages, horse tack, about 20 loads of hay and straw, new and used tools, new and used farm equipment, sheds, lumber, lawn and garden equipment and furniture, collectibles, sports memorabilia, new and used furniture and other household items, groceries, and more will be up for bids at the event.

“Three areas do well: Quilts are

always a big attraction, antiques have gained a lot of attention in the last few years, and crafts (are popular),” Ivan said. “(The area of) sporting goods - hunting and fishing gear - continues to grow as well.”

At about noon on Feb. 29, a Strasburg Fire Company XL T-shirt autographed by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz will be sold during a break in the quilt auction. Ivan noted that Wentz and fire company member Don Grodski are members of the same New York hunting club.

As Ivan previously suggested, chicken barbecue is traditionally among the food options at the sale.

Additional offerings on Feb. 29 will include chicken potpie and corn soup, soft pretzels, french fries, hot dogs, burgers, strawberry pies, and ice cream. The fire company’s kitchen will sell breakfast sandwiches, and the pretzel vendor will offer breakfast logs. A vendor will sell meat and cheese for snacking and in larger quantities. Chicken corn soup takeouts will be available from noon to 5 p.m. on Feb. 28 and all day on Feb. 29.

The proceeds from the mud sale will be used to fund the general operations of the fire company.

The organization is also continuing to raise money to buy a new piece of apparatus. Ivan said that the fire company’s aging Seagrave engine was sold last fall, and the fire company hopes to get its replacement by next spring.

“The sale is the biggest fundraiser for the fire company,” Ivan said.

He expressed his gratitude to the members of the various committees that are involved in producing

Narnia Tale from pg 1 Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) middle school students will present “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” at the school campus, 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata. A dinner theater will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, and performances will also take place on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 2 and 7 p.m.

This classic story from C.S. Lewis follows four siblings as they pass through an old wardrobe into the world of Narnia, where the great lion Aslan battles the White Witch. It is a story of faith, forgiveness and redemption.

Becky Degan has returned for

the third year as director for HMS middle school’s theatrical productions. She also directed “Anne of Green Gables” in 2018 and “Twain’s Tales” in 2019.

Degan is the associate pastor of worship and Christian education at Forest Hills Mennonite Church in Leola.

All middle school students participate in the production in some way, whether through acting, tech crew, props, set construction or service at the dinner theater. A Student Tech Team handles sound and lighting with support from HMS parents.

Other teams gather, organize

and prepare props for the show and handle promotions. The students and director are supported by a team of current and former parents, faculty and staff, handling everything from backstage management and prop and set design and creation to student logistics, sound and lighting oversight and meal preparation.

HMS has offered drama productions to the local community since 1988.

For the dinner theater, separate fees have been set for adults and for children age 4 to grade eight; admission will be free for children age 3 and under. There is a set fee for general admission tickets for the Feb. 29 performances, with tickets available at

Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a jelly roll pan and set aside. In a bowl with stand or hand stand mixer, cream together sugar, eggs, vanilla, and oil. On low speed, alternately add in flour, salt, and milk until incorporated. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove cake and while still hot, spread peanut butter over top. Set in fridge or freezer until peanut butter is set. In a bowl placed over a simmering pot of water on stove, melt chocolate and 1 tablespoon coconut oil. In another bowl, melt the other chocolate and remaining coconut oil. Pour the semi-sweet chocolate over top the peanut butter layer. Spread with a spreader until evenly coated. Pour the milk chocolate over the semi-sweet in rows. Take a toothpick and drag it through the chocolates creating a swirl-type pattern. Stick pan in fridge or freezer until chocolate is hardened.

Program To Explore Downsizing

In 2019, Emily Kline and Melissa Faller, the founders of Emme Dance Collective, created a dance concert called “Bring Into Being” to introduce their company to the Lancaster area.

This year, the pair has created “Veer” with a goal of distinguishing their dance company from other established organizations.

“We want to be known for our thing, which is contemporarystyle movement,” explained Faller. “We are veering off into our own direction.”

“Veer,” which will include 10 dance pieces and last about an hour, will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown.

The original pieces choreographed by Kline and Faller will be performed by more than 20 dancers, including 12 apprentices. Dances for the familyfriendly show have been kept intentionally short so that the performance moves quickly.

As with “Bring Into Being,” “Veer” will be performed in the style of contemporary dance, which includes techniques pulled from modern dance, but the program will depart from the themes of “Bring Into Being.”

“This year, we are incorporating some different themes,” Kline pointed out. “There will be similarities, but we both tried to branch out.”

Faller agreed. “I think with the title ‘Veer,’ we both felt (the work) was jarring,” she said, adding that the movement and music will be edgier compared to the calmer “Bring Into Being.”

“This time we are trying to pack a punch with our movement and everything we are showing,” noted Faller.

“Some movement is more animalistic,” said Kline, who pointed out that a piece called “Birds of Paradise” was influenced by tropical birds. “Some (numbers) are influenced by real-life events -

As with the debut of the company in 2019, Kline and Faller noted that dances will be quick moving and engaging, and the choreography will be colorful and upbeat. For “Veer,” the costuming will be brighter as well. “This year, we branched out, with some of our costuming being more vibrant in color,” said Kline. “We have some that is more eccentric, and (we used) more abstract shapes.”

Faller and Kline attended school together in Manheim Township School District from a young age.

Both took lessons at a local dance studio and, following graduation, majored in dance at DeSales University in Center Valley. At DeSales, Kline focused on choreography, while Faller was more interested in performance. The pair launched Emme Dance Collective in Lancaster at the end of June 2018. Emme Dance Collective is sponsored fiscally through Fractured Atlas in New York.

In the past, Kline and Faller have used their talents to give back to the community by contributing to other local organizations, an effort they plan to repeat. The yearly dance concert helps raise funds to make that possible. “(The annual performance) keeps us going and allows us to give back and hold fundraiser shows,” explained Faller.

2020 Run4Luck Event Planned

Junior League of Lancaster will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with its 15th annual Run4Luck on Saturday, March 14, at Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster. All runners and walkers are invited to participate. Local radio personality Holly Love will kick off the event with the Kids’ Fun Run at 9 a.m., which will be followed by the 4-mile run at 9:30 a.m., and the 2-mile walk at 9:40 a.m.

Early registration is available through Thursday, Feb. 27. Early registrants are guaranteed a discounted registration price, a long-sleeved performance shirt, and a race bag. Registration will remain open after Feb. 27 until race day at full price. There is a registration cost for the Kids’ Fun Run as well.

After the annual run and walk, participants are invited to enjoy post-race festivities, including an awards ceremony, music, and fun. Challenges of staging the show include reconciling the differences between the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical and the 1978 film starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. “The hardest thing is that the musical and the movie are a lot different,” said Kolby, who noted that the harmonies in the musical are not the same as in the movie.

“It’s hard because we are used to hearing what is in the movie, so we have to train our ears to hear something different,” he explained. Although the play includes music not featured in the movie, through a special licensing agreement, the PVHS show will include “Grease,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “Sandy,” and “You’re the One

That I Want.”

Another challenge, according to Seth, is the choreography, which has the students working with choreographer Katie Adams at the Lanco Performing Arts dance studio in New Holland for several hours each Saturday. Dance rehearsals began in mid-December. “It’s a whole new level (of dancing),” said Seth.

Cast members reported that preparing to stage the show is an enjoyable experience. Billy noted that it is exciting to be part of a modern show. “I can personally relate a lot to each character,” he said.

Maggie added that the characters fit many of the students’ personalities, making the rehearsals fun. “Every character is so funny and unique,” noted Elijah. “They each have their own vibe, and I am constantly laughing.”

Overwhelmingly, the cast hopes audience members gain

lots of laughs from watching the production. Alexandria said that she hopes the audience appreciates the energy the cast puts into the show.

Bankert believes the students’ hard work will be obvious to audience members. “(The members of) this group … connect well with each other on a personal level each day in school,” he said. “For me, as a director, that has made this show very rewarding,” he noted, adding, “(The students in the cast) have come together as a team.”

Seth lauded the director in return. “Mr. Bankert puts a lot of time and effort in, and it really shows,” he said. “He (works) to make it the best it can be.”

A total of 285 teams from 235 high schools across Pennsylvania are competing in district and regional levels of the Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Young Lawyers Division. Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 37th year.

During the competition, eightmember student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of a case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for the competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules.

The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March.

Then, 14 high school mock trial teams will advance to the PBA Statewide Mock Trial Championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28, in Harrisburg. The winning team will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals, which are scheduled for Wednesday to Saturday, May 6 to 9, in Evansville, Ind. The Pennsylvania Bar Foundation, the charitable affiliate of the PBA, is providing funding support for the statewide competition. Serving as co-chairs of the Mock Trial Executive Committee are Young Lawyers Division chair Jennifer Menichini of Pittston and former Young Lawyers Division chair Jonathan D. Koltash of Harrisburg.

The third annual BIG Shots Free Throw Competition fundraiser will be held in the gym at The Factory Ministries, housed in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Friday, March 6, beginning by 10 a.m. In addition to the free throw contest, organizers hope to hold a half-court competition for participants featuring a special prize.

Greater Paradise area businesses and organizations are encouraged to register participants, who then gather sponsors.

Each participant will be assigned a time slot of 30 minutes during the day on March 6 to come in and make as many foul shots out of 100 as possible. In 2018, a Pequea Valley High School girls basketball player was the winner. “I made (88 baskets) both years, and I thought that was pretty good,� said Stiger. “(The students) come in at the end of the day and beat us all.�

Stoltzfus commented that because the event is held on a Friday, regular weekday activities are ongoing during the fundraiser. “One year Head Start (students) came in and cheered the (basketball) shooters,� she said, adding that Factory staff members would be available to give tours of the facility to participants, supporters, and spectators.

Nagle echoed Stoltzfus’ thoughts. “Its fun, engaging, well done, and has impact and return,� said Nagle. “We love working with Baron and so appreciate the heart they have for people.�

Stiger said that the first event raised $12,000 for The Factory Ministries, and that the 2019 competition raised nearly $15,000. His goal for this year is to raise $20,000.

Stoltzfus noted that a leaderboard will be running in the gym to update visitors on the totals for participants.

When coming out to face Goliath on the basketball court back on Saturday, February 8, David didn’t bring a sling shot; rather David brought on a slew of three-point shots.

It was the Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team that was given the Herculean task of taking down the unbeaten Hempfield Black Knights in the quarterfinal round of the Lan-

caster-Lebanon League playoffs.

The two teams squared off on Hempfield’s home court as the Section Five runners-up visited the Section One champ Knights, who had compiled a 13-0 record in league play. Pequea came in with an 8-2 league record.

Abbey Leslie came through with seven three-point baskets and finished with 25 points, leading Pequea to a 48-42 victory.

But the term “upset” is for the

overused go-to jargon of sports writers. For Pequea Valley head coach Jason McDonald, it was simply a night where his experienced and steady players came through.

“If you’re good enough to get into the playoffs, anything can happen,” McDonald said. “We tell the kids, ‘Believe in yourselves and play hard.’

“This is the fourth year making district playoffs with the seniors on our team,” McDonald noted. “We have six seniors. They’re leading the way and the other kids are following the lead.”

Leslie, one of those seniors, was 7-for-8 from three-point range. As a team, the Braves made 10 of 13 three-point attempts.

“She had the hot hand,” McDonald said. “Plus, our kids are smart enough and good enough to get the ball to the person who is playing well.”

“A team shoots 77 percent from

three-point range will win most of the time,” Hempfield head coach Kendra Merrifield said. “Abbey Leslie had a hot hand. If she shot the ball backwards, it might have gone in.”

Hempfield’s defense keyed in on Pequea’s leading scorer, senior Caroline Horst, holding her scoreless on the night.

“They took Caroline out of the game in terms of scoring,” McDonald said. “But she did control the boards she had 11 or 12 rebounds - and helped with the offensive tempo of the game.

“When they did focus on Abbey, they left other people open,” continued the coach. “The kids have been playing together well. Different kids are stepping up in different categories every night.”

Horst also had four assists and three rebounds to help the team.

Freshman Brooke Liney scored

eight for Pequea, hitting two more of those treys. Clara Neff nailed one three-point shot and finished with seven points.

Lindsey Durkota and Autumn Cook each scored 11 for Hempfield as the Knights fell to 17-6 overall.

As for the Braves’ defense, they had success playing a zone.

“We went to a zone, which we haven’t played much this year,” said McDonald. “We did a good job of that Saturday night. It threw them off. They weren’t expecting it.”

In the league semifinals at Conestoga Valley, the Braves faced Section Three champion Solanco in the doubleheader’s opening game.

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is celebrating its 100-year anniversary in 2020, and the yearlong celebration opened with volunteers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe making thousands of comforters during The Great Winter WarmUp events in January. The comforters are donated to people in crisis all over the world.

In Lancaster County, volunteers gathered to knot comforters at sites including Erisman Mennonite Church in Manheim, Garden Spot Village in New Holland, Lancaster Mennonite School - New Danville Campus, Mountville Mennonite Church, and the MCC East Coast Materials Resource Center in Ephrata.

MCC was founded in 1920 by Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren groups that formed a committee to provide food and other aid to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia, which is present-day Ukraine.

Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief in more than 50

nations. Offering comforters and blankets has been one of the ways MCC has provided relief resources since the end of World War II. According to MCC representative Linda Espenshade, the organization sent more than 53,000 comforters to people in need in 2018, with approximately 30,000 of those comforters coming from MCC supporters on the East Coast.

“Each comforter is unique and conveys a message of compassion,” stated J Ron Byler, MCC United States executive director.

“People who get these comforters realize they are getting something personal. Someone has chosen the fabric and crafted each one with their hands. They understand this is a gift of love.”

For The Great Winter WarmUp, participants worked together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting, and sturdy backing fabric into durable comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops had already been sewn together prior to the knotting sessions.

At Erisman Mennonite

Erisman Mennonite Church in Manheim served as one of several Lancaster County host sites for The Great Winter Warm-Up, where volunteers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe worked to make and knot thousands of comforters to donate to people in crisis around the world through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). The Great Winter Warm-Up was the first of several events planned to celebrate MCC’s 100th anniversary in 2020.

Church, more than 80 volunteers worked together to complete a total of 111 comforters on Jan. 16 and 20. Janet Runion Patton, who leads the Sewing Circle that meets regularly at the church, said that the members of the group decided they would like to be a host site for The Great Winter Warm-Up because they had hosted a day for knotting comforters in 2018.

Erisman’s Sewing Circle meets at the church, located at 8 S. Erisman Road, Manheim, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. People of all ages and sewing ability levels even novices wanting to learn are welcome to attend. Anyone with interest or questions may call Janet at 717-926-4008. “It’s very ecumenical,” said Janet, noting that participants in the group represent a wide variety of churches throughout the area.

During The Great Winter Warm-Up, Janet’s husband, Charles Patton, played hymns and other music on the piano which filled the church sanctuary as people of all ages worked away, enjoying quiet conversation and fellowship and breaking at mealtimes for chicken corn soup and light refreshments.

Diane Buckley-Maidt traveled from Ellicott City, Md., to participate at Erisman because it was one of the MCC centennial events she thought would best fit into her schedule for the year. “I got the email and thought it sounded like fun,” said BuckleyMaidt, who served with MCC in the 1980s in Louisiana as well as at the Ephrata headquarters.

At the end of the event, Janet delivered the comforters to the MCC Material Resource Center in Ephrata. From there, the comforters will be distributed to people in need throughout the world as a tangible sign of compassion in whatever crisis they may be facing. For instance, comforters have been delivered to people in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon in recent years in the wake of war in Syria and other violence in the region.

Led by two-time Grammy-nominated trumpeter Horne, the band weaves the sound of New Orleans into a rich musical fabric that demonstrates the history of the trumpet and the story of jazz.

Inspired by the music of King Oliver Creole Jazz Band, the Gotham Kings Mardi Gras Party encompasses rags, stomps, shouts, and funk. The band has played in venues including Caramoor Jazz Festival, Louis Armstrong House Museum, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Individually, members of the Gotham Kings have compiled a diverse resume of collaborations with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Michael Feinstein, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.

Horne has earned many awards and won the National Trumpet Competition in 2010. In the August 2011 issue of JET

Magazine, world-renowned trumpeter Marsalis included Horne in a list of 16 young jazz musicians titled “Wynton’s Picks: Who’s Got Next.”

Horne has subbed for and toured with Marsalis in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Count Basie Orchestra, Cab Calloway Orchestra, and others. He has performed in venues and festivals around the world. Horne has also performed in several Tony-Award winning Broadway shows, including “After Midnight” and “Shuffle Along.”

Horne can also be seen on CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and in the jazz biopic “Bolden.” He holds degrees from Florida State University and The Juilliard School.

The World War II Oral History Club will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia.

The club will host Eleanor Isaacson, a World War II survivor. Born in New Jersey and abandoned at age 2, Isaacson grew up in Hitler’s Germany. She survived bombings, starvation, and many of the horrors of the Nazi regime before she reached her teens. She left Germany for the United States just as the Iron Curtain was closing.

The World War II Oral History Club meets on the last Tuesday of the month except December. All World War II veterans and family and anyone with an interest in WWII history are invited to attend. Oniskey Wins Speaking Contest Jude Oniskey won first place in the Ephrata Cloister Toastmasters Club’s speech contest on Jan. 27. The club-level event is part of Toastmasters International’s International Speech Contest. Oniskey presented a speech titled “Change the World.”

Oniskey will next compete in an area-wide contest on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The public is invited to attend.

The Ephrata Cloister Toastmasters Club is one of 358,000 Toastmasters clubs in 143 countries around the world. Each spring, members compete in club-level speech contests.

Through competition in the area, division, district and semifinal levels, several finalists emerge to vie for the title of World Champion of Public Speaking.

Square Halo Books recently announced its newest conference, “The Inklings: Creativity, Collaboration and Community,” will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2, at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster.

Inspired by the fellowship of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and their friends who gathered together to discuss their writings, the conference will reflect on their works, while also providing creative and collaborative experiences for attendees throughout the weekend.

The weekend will include a variety of presenters, including writers, poets, actors and artists. The keynote speaker will be Donald T. Williams, author of “Deeper Magic: The Theology Behind the Writings of C.S. Lewis,” a Square Halo book.

Other presenters will include writers Matthew Dickerson, Shawn Smucker and Christy Purifoy, poet Christine Perrin and director Bonnie Bosso. The conference will conclude with a concert by singer-songwriter Andrew Peterson. The event is being held in collaboration with The Trust Performing Arts Center, The Row House, The Reverie Actors’ Company and Hearts & Minds Bookstore.

In partnership with the conference, the Square Halo Gallery, located in the Trust, is holding an Inklings-inspired art exhibition.
