for people who are grieving the loss of a loved one will begin on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. GriefShare is for those who have experienced painful losses, particularly the death of a spouse, child, family member or friend. This group is sponsored by people who understand grief and want to offer comfort and encouragement. Each session of GriefShare will begin with the showing of a DVD featuring an expert on a grief and recovery subject. The DVD showing is followed by small group discussion. Elizabeth Hoover, co-leader of The Factory Youth Center with Micah Leaman, is looking forward to taking 70 teenagers on a winter retreat from Friday, March 6, through Sunday, March 8. “ We are headed to Camp Orchard Hill,” said an enthusiastic Hoover. The group from The Factory will convene at the retreat in Dallas, Penn., for Winterblast 2020. The first weekend of March is specifically set aside by the camp for youth centers, which bring about 300 students in grades seven through 12 to the event. Winterblast 2020 is based on the theme of “Stories.” “They will be talking about God’s story, your story, and our story, meaning your story matters to God,” explained Hoover, who added See Winterblast pg 7
Students from The Factory Youth Center will return to Camp Orchard Hill in Dallas, Pa., from March 6 through 8 for Winterblast 2020, a special weekend of activities designed for youth centers. The Factory is seeking scholarships to help take 70 students to the event.
Tracey Strohecker and Annie Friedrichs are both excited about the atmosphere that Heart2Heart4Women will offer those who attend, and neither can wait to invite area women to join them. Heart2Heart4Women will be a monthly event focused on women gathering together for friendship and networking opportunities. Betty Snyder, Margaret Sensenig, and Deb Burns, have been organizing the annual lasagna dinner fundraiser at Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Leola, generally held on the last Saturday in February, for a number of years, and the trio runs the event like a well-oiled machine. “Dr. Grant Woods is a wildlife biologist and hunter specializing in deer habitat improvement and hunting techniques,” said Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), who noted that Woods has been a consultant to comedian Jeff Foxworthy with regard to deer population growth and management. Woods’ reputation as a man who loves God, his family, and hunting makes him a good fit to speak at the fifth annual RTCM sportsman banquet, which will be held on Wednesday, March 25, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Auditions for national anthem singers for the Lancaster Barnstormers’ 16th season will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, in Center Court at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster. Sessions will be held at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Individuals looking to honor America with the gift of their voices or instrumental talents are invited to participate in the open tryouts. A panel of judges will be on hand to assess the performances. Officials from the Barnstormers will score each performance and invite the top scorers to perform at the stadium for one or more of the club’s 72 home games during the 2020 regular season. WellSpan To Open New Office In Ephrata WellSpan Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine is consolidating two of its offices into one larger office in Ephrata. The practice is combining its offices at 3440B Rothsville Road, Ephrata, and at 227 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, into a new office at 446 N. Reading Road, Ephrata. The new office will open Monday, June 1, on the second floor of the WellSpan Reading Road Health Center, just off Route 272 north of Ephrata. The phone number will be 717-738-4334. The new office, which will include 16 exam rooms, is designed to allow greater flexibility for patients to schedule and undergo pulmonary function testing and injections. Patients also will have convenient access to lab work, CT scans, and X-rays, which all can be performed by WellSpan staff in the same building. The consolidation will not affect the WellSpan Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine office at 435 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, which will continue to see patients. This year, the church is sending a team to Guatemala from Monday, April 20, through Monday, April 27, to work with Barb and Denny Freed of Orphan Resources International (ORI). “(The Freeds) take teams around to different orphanages,” said Sensenig, who noted that Denny is charged with purchasing food and distributing it to the orphanages. “(Denny) buys foods like powdered milk, cornmeal, flour, sugar, and all the staples they need,” said Sensenig. “They don’t have milk unless it’s given to them by ORI.” Sensenig is not sure what type of work the team of five
will perform in Guatemala, but in the past, the groups have helped out in some of the 50 orphanages supported by ORI. Sensenig said team members might be painting or visiting the warehouse to sort food or donated clothing. “We will take money for whatever they need,” noted Sensenig, who added that the funds are often used to purchase underwear and shoes. “Those (items) are a big need in all the orphanages,” said Sensenig. “We can go to stores there to purchase (items) in the sizes they need.” For 2021, Sensenig said church members are contemplating keeping the mission team stateside. “Next year we plan to stay in the country,” she said, adding that one location under consideration is JAARS’ headquarters in Waxhaw,

He holds degrees from Southwest Missouri State University, University of Georgia, and Clemson University. He has spent nearly 30 years specializing in habitat improvement and researching bucks. Woods’ goal is to give hunters proven strategies, food plot techniques, and practical advice for common hunting problems and management issues. In addition to Woods’ talk, the event will include auction items going up for bids. A Chinese auction will also be held. According to Santiago, tens of thousands of dollars worth of door prizes will be given away. Santiago noted that a number of auction and door prize items have been gathered for the event. “ We will have a muzzleloader, compound bows, trail cameras, tree stands, blinds, hunting backpacks, and clothing,” said Santiago. “There will be prizes for anglers and hunters, so
bring your family,” he added, noting that some prizes will appeal to youths and women. The grand prize will be a Ravin R29 Crossbow. RTCM strives to help men who have been traumatized and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. The organization supports clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. Santiago noted that by bringing a relationship with God into the students’ lives, the program aims to restore the men to their families. The current RTCM facility can accommodate 12 students. Students who attend The Factory Youth Center enjoy a variety of activities during Winterblast, an annual retreat in March. Sobiech said that she has especially enjoyed the free time with her friends, when she can hang out with them and play games. Sophomore Jonathan Poague recalled enjoying the sledding hill and playing 9 Square in the Air in the gym. Gaige Hays, who is also a sophomore, said, “I love spending time with my friends and meeting new people, and it’s just a lot of fun doing the activities.” Hays recalled Nerf battles, rock climbing, and other fun activities. The total cost to send one youth to the event is $155, and The Factory is seeking scholarships to help fund the trip. The
cost covers lodging, food, and the staff that Camp Orchard Hill provides to supervise rock climbing and other activities. In addition to the many activities at the camp, there is a café that offers a casual setting. “They have a café that the students love called The Apple Tree,” said Hoover. “They can grab snacks or hang out and play board and card games. It’s a really neat environment.” Hoover is excited about the opportunities the weekend gives her and Leaman to develop student relationships. “One thing I love about Camp Orchard Hill is that they provide staff so that we can connect with the teenagers,” she said, adding that the event is always enriching to the students. “They do an incredible job. I give them a 10 out of 10 when it comes to their programming,” she said. that she and Leaman have been doing lessons related to stories with the students who attend the youth center in order to help them prepare for Winterblast. The camp’s website explains that the idea behind the theme of the weekend is to let students know that Scripture is not just ancient text, it is God’s story. The weekend will focus on Jesus as the final resolution to that story and how humans as God’s children are part of that story through their relationship with Him. Schuylkill County pastor Josh Ott will return to speak to the students. Ott is a communicator and ministry coach with a passion for delivering a message that is authentic and engaging and that communicates truth, hope, and life. He has spoken for nearly 20 years to a range of audiences. The second annual “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition will be held this spring at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Entries are being accepted, with a deadline of Wednesday, April 1. Initially, the deadline had been a month earlier, but gallery curator and publicist Stephanie Cole explained that an extra month had been added so local art teachers have more time to participate with their classes. During the application process, digital images of artwork may be submitted. The originals do not have to be brought to the studio until the week of April 20, Cole said. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 1, from 5 to 9 p.m. A best-in-show award and a people’s choice award will be bestowed in the student and adult categories. Entries will be juried to ensure that the pieces in the show have theme-related
subjects and that they are appropriate to be viewed by audiences of all ages. “(The subject) should be an animal that they’ve cared for, that they’ve known and loved,” Koppenhaver said. Application to the show is free, but a cost has been set to participate in the show. The participation fee will be waived for one piece for each artist who is a high school student or younger, with a reduced rate, as compared to the adult fee schedule, for additional entries. The artwork may be sold through the exhibition, and Mulberry Art Studios will take a commission. The proceeds will be donated to The Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Last year’s show raised $1,000 for the organization. The Sebastian Foundation was founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety and aims to facilitate the adoption of unwanted animals. Cole provided a statement from foundation volunteer Ellen Stark, who said, “(Donations received will help in a variety of ways), from basic needs such as food and bedding to providing medical care to dogs that, in a lot of instances, may have been neglected, abused, or never seen a veterinarian. The Sebastian Foundation relies on the generosity of donors to give these guys a healthy and happy future. April Koppenhaver and her husband, Charles E. Gaul II, already had a dog, Valentino, when a second canine came into their care. Milo was a rescue dog, so his age was undetermined. The beagle mix had been adopted by a family member, but after more than a decade, Milo’s owner developed allergies and sought a new home for the beloved pet. Valentino and Milo were used to being the only dogs in their homes, so Koppenhaver moved Milo into Mulberry Art Studios, the gallery she founded. Milo quickly became a favorite of visitors.
“He was always smiling,” Koppenhaver recalled. “He’d sit there, and you’d hear” - she tapped her finger on a wooden counter. “He was thumping his tail to greet people.” Toward the end of his life, Milo developed cancer, and he died in November 2018. Gaul, who also had serious health issues, died at age 93 on Jan. 5, 2019, shortly before the couple’s 10th anniversary. In working through her grief from the two losses, Koppenhaver thought about how to commemorate Gaul and Milo. Thus, the Charles E. Gaul II and Milo “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition was created. The inaugural show last year featured 197 pieces of art related to pets. “There were all kinds of animals and some we couldn’t recognize,” Koppenhaver said. Styles ranged from the serious to the whimsical, including a cat wearing high-heeled shoes. “This was the first time we called for (a range of skill, from)

This year, PPL is marking its centennial by honoring people who work to transform lives in their communities. The PPL Foundation will give a total of $100,000 in grants to help illuminate the contributions of individuals working in the nonprofit sector. The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recently announced that Roger S. Brubaker of Lancaster, Meadow Valley Electric Inc., Ephrata, has been named 2020 chair of the board. Brubaker was the past owner and president of Wilco Electric Inc. for 30 years. In 2019, Wilco Electric was sold to Meadow Valley Electric Inc., and Brubaker currently serves as director of construction services for Meadow Valley. He is the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) OAC electrical chair and a member of the Hempfield School District Business Advisory Council, and he has been a member of the Pennsylvania Apprenticeship and Training Council since 2018. Brubaker has been very involved with the ABC Keystone Apprenticeship Committee and has also been a member of the ABC Keystone board of directors since 2010. Brubaker studied at West Chester University and Elizabethtown College. Currently, he and his wife reside in Lancaster. Changing The World One Life At A Time “Tim, I know today is a workday for the project, but can I go to the Bible teaching this morning instead?” When Friends In Action (FIA) executive director Tim Johnston was approached with this question by a Rama Cay villager named Pete it was a moment to rejoice. Headquartered in Middletown, FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure worldwide by using construction projects and other practical service to spread the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who have never heard it before. FIA has been at work among the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua since 2004, when village leaders invited volunteers to help with community rebuilding efforts. The greatest concentration of Rama is a group of 1,400 people who reside on a poverty-stricken island almost forgotten by the mainland. The World Health Organization reports that malnutrition is increasing each year for Rama children. They face widespread malnutrition, inadequate water and sewage systems, and sporadic public health measures. One of the Rama Cay Villagers whose life has been touched by FIA is Pete. Pete used to live in a 10-by-10-foot thatched-roof hut
with his common-law wife, four children, and many extended family members. His days alternated between binge drinking and trying to fish and subsistence farm his small plot of depleted soil. When FIA workers invited Pete to learn trade skills, he jumped at the opportunity. For the past eight years, Pete has worked alongside FIA’s volunteer teams to dig wells, install boat docks, construct a pedestrian bridge, and clear land for a community playground and laundry/shower house. The masonry, carpentry, and construction skills Pete learned eventually enabled him to make his own clay bricks and build a new house for his family to move to the mainland. Pete also began attending ongoing Bible classes led by FIA volunteers. Pete’s story is just one example of the thousands of lives impacted through the efforts of FIA. In 2019, more than 70 workers from Pennsylvania traveled with FIA to impact more than 250,000 destitute people in six remote locations around the globe. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, churches, and individual donors, in 2019 FIA brought clean water to more than 14,000 West Africans through well-drilling efforts; provided medical, dental, and vision assistance to more than 1,200
Bolivians along the Amazon River through the El Misionero riverboat ministry; and taught life and trade skills and God’s word to hundreds of students from Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, Vanuatu, and Moldova through educational sponsorship efforts. The organization also impacted more than 215,000 villagers from remote bush regions of Brazil and Bolivia through the 24/7 broadcasts of Christian teaching and music on Inspiracion’s radio; provided more than 4,000 inmates in Papua New Guinea with water, biscuits, and prison ministry; and assisted nearly 150 Rama Cay through community transformation efforts in Nicaragua. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for trips in 2020. People with construction skills may be interested in volunteering to complete a Rama Cay laundry and shower house in May or to help develop a conference center in Vanuatu in June. In August, FIA will break ground on a massive fiveyear Water And Sanitation Health (WASH) project to bring 3,500 NiVan villagers of Vanuatu clean water. Mother-daughter teams are invited to host vacation Bible school and family
teaching sessions in Nicaragua this July. OperaLancaster will present a concert titled “Love, Opera Style” on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Roschel Performing Arts Center, 610 College Ave., Lancaster, on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College. Anyone who is interested in food safety is welcome to take a ServSafe course. “We have a lot of individuals who take the class who are just interested in food safety, (as well as) volunteers or people interested in the possibility of a career change,” Reed said. “I know a lot of employers do value certification, to the point that they will send large groups of employees to classes at one time.” Along with potentially helping someone obtain a job in food service, the ServSafe program provides valuable knowledge for use in other contexts too. “It’s information that you can apply even at home so that (you can) make sure you are preparing food safely for your family or (when you are) volunteering in the community,” Reed commented. Working in food service involves much more than asking “Would you like fries with that?” Food service workers may be employed in grocery stores, retirement communities, schools, office building cafeterias, restaurants, and anywhere else that qualifies as a retail food establishment as defined by law. One of the top priorities of all food service workers is to keep consumers safe. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has created a model food code, which is updated every four years, and states can create their own based on the model. According to Penn State Extension, the FDA Food Code provides updated science-based guidance and recommendations on how to handle food safely in order to reduce or prevent foodborne illnesses. Until recently, the FDA Food Code required that one person within a food service operation be a Certified Food Protection Manager. The new update, announced in February 2018, now requires that the person in charge of a facility be certified. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), which oversees the state’s food code and the Food Employee Certification Act, adopted the update and declared the change in certified managers to go into effect in 2020. “We have research from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that shows when we have a (certified) person on duty at all times, the risk of foodborne illness is reduced,” said Stacy Reed, senior extension educator with Penn State Extension. “Prevention of foodborne illness is a big deal. About 48 million people get sick (from a foodborne illness) each year, and that leads to over 128,000 being hospitalized. That means one out of every six people will get sick from a foodborne illness (annually). An estimated 3,000 people pass away from a foodborne
illness every year.” Until the latest change, retail food facilities were required to have a Certified Food Protection Manager available during inspection, even if it was just someone who could go to the facility when called. With the new requirement that the person in charge - for example, a shift manager - be certified, more people will need to have their certifications. “We’re trying to be proactive and making people aware of these amendments so that we have plenty of people that are certified,” Reed said. Certification must be renewed every five years. PDA recognizes manager certification programs offered by five organizations. Penn State Extension offers local classes for the PDA-approved ServSafe program from the National Restaurant Association (NRA). The classes are typically held in groups of two, with one week separating them. A proctored exam is offered at the end of the second day, and a score of 75% or higher is required to receive a certificate. Exams may be taken four times in one year, but they must be spaced out according to the association’s guidelines. “Our food safety and quality professionals are highly educated in food safety,” Reed remarked. “We can provide real-life information and update you on all the changes and
