Vintage Revival Spring Fever Market Planned BY ANN MEAD ASH
Debbie Luther, market facilitator for the Vintage Revival Market, recently recalled the origins of the gathering. “A group of ladies used to meet in a Walmart parking lot to share vintage items found at yard sales and auctions,” said Luther, adding that she thinks
those meetups began around 2012. Eventually the group began holding markets at an Akron church, and the event was held at that location for some time. LCCS Plans Second Legacy Workshop BY ANN MEAD ASH
h en describing the thought process behind presenting Legacy Planning for Uncertain Times, a financial workshop to be held at Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS), Doctor Sandy Outlar, who works in community relations for the school, turned to John Wesley, Methodist Evangelist and famous theologian, for inspiration. “‘Make all you can, save all you can, and give all you can,’” quoted Outlar. “I think that sums up what we’re trying to do.” He added, “We want to be maneuvered in God’s hands as to what we do with what God has given to us. This (workshop) is meant to be inspirational and informative.” This year’s workshop, the second held by LCCS, will take place in the large lobby of the school at 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshop will consist of
“(Attendees said) they appreciated learning ways to get the most out of investments and provide funding for beloved organizations (t h e y w o u l d ) l i k e t o support.” “Tax Paying With a Purpose” will be presented by Jason McDougall and will explore ways to redirect funds and utilize tax strategies. The final workshop, presented by Lamar King, will be “Investing in Periods of Fear.” Material will look at keeping stewardship purposeful in times of uncertainty. Outlar said that positive
feedback from the 2020 workshop, which was attended by more than 50 people, inspired the school to schedule another one. “(Attendees said) they appreciated learning ways to get the most out of investments and provide funding for beloved organizations (they would) like to support,” he stated. “There was praise for the quality of the speakers and the content.” Outlar added that the upcoming workshop is designed for people who may not have spent much time thinking about estate planning and who might “appreciate getting more out of their money with certain types of investments.” The workshop is free and open to the public, but those wishing to take part are asked to register by calling 717-556-0711, ext. 213, or emailing soutlar@lccs.cc by Wednesday, March 10. As Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) prepares to start construction on a new STEM Innovation Center, Phase 1A of the largest remodel effort in the school’s more than 90-year history, school president Tim Hamer is looking forward to equipping the building to match the curriculum. “The once-in-a-lifetime rebuilding was informed by what we need to do to teach what we want to teach,” said Hamer.

Some of the most important features of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church lasagna dinner fundraiser will be the same this year. Organizers will still prepare up to 100 pans of lasagna in three varieties hamburger, hamburger and sausage, and vegetable with a red sauce - on the day of the sale. Meals will each include a square of lasagna, a salad, garlic bread, and a homemade dessert. Individual pans of each variety of lasagna will also be sold at a special price. Changes will include the method of delivery for the food and the date the event will be held. “It has always been the last Saturday in February, but this year, we have changed the date to the third Saturday in February,� said Margaret Sensenig, who organizes the event along with Betty Snyder and Deb Burns. This

year’s dinner will be a drive-through event held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m. Those wishing to purchase meals or pans of lasagna are asked to take Horseshoe Road to Industrial Circle and enter the church driveway from the right side of Industrial Circle. Cars will then pull into the parking lot, where orders will be taken and cash payment will be accepted. Meals will be delivered to each car at the south entrance of the church, and signage will direct participants out of the parking lot. Volunteers at the event will follow CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines for wearing masks and social distancing in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions. Past dinners have raised about $2,000 in funds, which have been used to support mission trips to Guatemala or JAARS in Waxhaw, N.C. “This year, (the money we raise) will go into our mission fund and be used to support local, national, and international ministries,� said Sensenig. Rather than being 100 years old, vintage items are 30 or more years old. “I am not an expert on vintage, but it’s (mostly) from the 50s, 60’s, 70s,” said Luther. There is no admission fee to attend the market. Vendors pay a rental fee that Luther uses for live music for the event, advertising, and giveaways for attendees. Any

LCHS chose Marotta/Main Architects to design the remodel after holding a competition. “The beauty of this (plan) is the efficiency of being within the existing footprint of the school,” said Hamer. “We are repurposing space.” The renovation, which will also include a Student Commons and dining hall and a performing arts center, has its roots in the school’s strategic plan. “We needed to modernize the facility to offer students 21st-century learning tools,” explained Hamer. “That was the priority of our student plan.” A feasibility survey of the LCHS community was part of the research. “(We asked) what were the top priorities, and the answer was interesting,” Hamer shared. “Exactly 50% thought that building a fine and performing arts facility and auditorium and modernizing the cafeteria was a top priority,” said Hamer. “The other 50% thought that modernizing our STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) facilities was a priority.” Hamer noted that the request for STEM facilities fit well with curricular changes the school was already making. “We are rewriting our entire curriculum simultaneously with the strategic plan,” said Hamer, who noted that LCHS will equip the center based on a STEM curriculum designed by leading educators called Project Lead the Way. “These are experientially based curricula for biomedicine, computer science, and engineering,” he said. The STEM Innovation Center, which will replace the third floor of Riley Hall, is slated to be under construction before students leave school in May. The new auditorium, which will replace the 1929 gym currently being used for presentations, and the Student Commons and dining area, which will replace the cafeteria built in 1974, will be Phase 1B, with construction scheduled for the summer of 2022. “We will be using the space that is now the cafeteria, which has no floor over it,” said Hamer. “We will build the auditorium there because we can go up and stay within the footprint of the school.” Hamer noted that a triangular courtyard that exists where the three wings of the school join together will be filled in and connected to the school library. “That is where the cafeteria and Student Commons will be moved so we can make room for the auditorium.” Through its Cherish - Love Honor campaign, LCHS has raised nearly $9 million of the initial $12 million needed for the renovations. Hamer emphasized that no funds will be borrowed for the project. “This (plan) is far less expensive than the alternatives, and it allows for a better flow and use of space,”

Will construct basic cabinetry within specifications. Cabinet Hardware – Performs the basic final assembly of cabinetry installing all hardware and components to cabinets; hanging doors, installing shelves, mounting drawer fronts, installing drawer/roll-out tracks. Will use power and hand tools, gauging equipment and jigs. Candidates must have a proven work history, be detail oriented and able to read and interpret measurements, work orders and wood species. When Logan McGrane of Gap was not yet 4 years old, he started riding motorcycles. By the time he was 4, he was racing motorcycles. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 26 through 29, 2020, the 15-year-old Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) freshman smoked the competition during three days of racing in Travelers Rest, S.C. “He won three national championships,” said Logan’s grandfather Thomas McGrane. Logan is the son of Thomas McGrane Jr. of Gap and Laurie Wilson of Honey Brook. Logan bested all the other racers in five of the nine main events at

Travelers Rest, and he placed second or third in the other four. Logan’s winnings included the College Boy National Championship for young men ages 14 to 29. McGrane also won the Open Amateur National Championship, where riders must be 12 or older on a 250 to 450 cc (cubic centimeter) bike, and the 450 Amateur National Championship, where racers must be 14. He also raced short track and half-mile events, along with the TT (Tours Trophy) race, which features a jump and a right-hand corner. Off the track, Logan plays basketball for PVHS, and he was the only freshman to start with the PVHS football team in the fall of 2020, earning his varsity letter. Logan said that racing has not interfered with schoolwork or school activities. Racing motorcycles runs in Logan’s blood. “It’s what we do,” noted his grandfather, adding that Logan uses the motorcycles that were ridden by his late uncle Kyle McGrane, a champion racer

Logan’s father was also a national champion, and his uncle Warren Diem was a world champion. Asked what he enjoys most about racing, Logan cited “going fast” and “winning,” but noted that traveling is fun as well. He said that he has visited Florida, Georgia, both North and South Carolina, and Tennessee and has traveled up the East Coast as well. Heading west, he has been to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kansas, South Dakota, and Colorado. “I just got back from Jacksonville, Fla.,” said Logan in mid-January. While in Florida, he finished third in the Winter Throwdown races held Jan. 8 and 9. Logan looks forward to turning professional as soon as he celebrates his 16th birthday in September, but he noted that will depend on the racing schedule. “If there are only one or two races after my birthday, I might wait until 2022,” he said. “This is what I want to do,” he added, grinning.
