The Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team remained hot with two victories over Lancaster-Lebanon League opponents.

In a game that featured two schools whose sports teams are called by the same name, the Octorara Braves were held to only 12 points at Pequea on Thursday evening, January 27. The Pequea Valley Braves, led by Sarah Arment and Deena Stoltzfus, topped the visiting Octorara side 45-12.

“Sarah Arment scores, rebounds the ball, and plays defense,” head coach Jason McDonald said. “She sets the tone with our defensive press.”

And the defensive press helped Pequea limit Octorara to only 12 points Thursday night

“That was our defensive game right there,” McDonald added.

Keeping pace with Columbia in Section Five, the Braves remain in second place behind the Crimson Tide, who are 7-0 in league play as well as being unbeaten (18-0) overall.

“The second-place team also goes to the league playoffs,” McDonald noted.

The game between the two Braves teams was the first of four that the PV Braves would play in a span of seven days.

Pequea Valley lost to Fleetwood in a non-league road game Friday evening 48-36. The Tigers’ early 18-3 lead had the Braves climbing back into the game. Despite keeping up with the Tigers the rest of the way outscoring them 32-29 - the Braves could not overcome the early deficit.

Shania Stoltzfus led the Braves in scoring with 14 points. Katie Stoltzfus scored eight and Arment finished with six.

The Braves’ defense was too strong for Lancaster Mennonite in a league contest on Monday, January 31.

Pequea held Mennonite to only six points in two of the four periods en route to a 69-36 win. The Braves (11-9) improved to 7-2 in league play.

This game was a testament to how the Braves’ fast-paced style takes other teams out of the game.

“Our style is hard to prepare for and defend,” McDonald explained. “It’s a track meet.

“You’re getting pressed all over the court,” continued the coach. “We try to create as much chaos as we can.”

In this scoring madness, the Braves poured it on with Shania Stoltzfus leading the team with 15 points. Katie Stoltzfus nailed four three-point shots to get her 12 points. Arment finished with 10 points and Morgan Graham contributed seven.

“Katie Stoltzfus has been shooting the ball very well,” McDonald commented. “Morgan was creating havoc in our press too.

“We’ve had this style for the past five or six years,” added McDonald. “Once the players get into it, they enjoy it more. They have to have control and you as a coach have to trust the players when playing this fast.”

Katie Stoltzfus had four more treys in the Braves’ Wednesday night nonleague victory over Dayspring Academy. The Braves put up 52 points combined in the second and third periods in this 80-39 win.

While Katie Stoltzfus led the team with her 16, Shania Stoltzfus scored 15. Arment poured in 12 and Breanne Beiler another nine points.

“Bree Beiler is also a good rebounder,” McDonald added.

In finishing with seven points, Deena Stoltzfus continued to contribute in multiple ways.

“Deena does a great job distributing the ball,” McDonald said. “And when things get hectic, she is able to calm us down. She is the person who sees if things are getting out of control, she will settle things down until we get back to our normal game.”

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Pequea Valley fell to 4-13 on the year, losing to a high-scoring Columbia team on Tuesday, February 1.

The Crimson Tide, paced by four players in double digits, improved to 18-1 as they topped the Braves 69-28.

Robert Footman, who scored 14, was the game’s leading scorer. Columbia teammate J’von Collazo poured in 11.

Samuel Arena, who had seven points on the night, made one of the Braves’ three-pointers of the game. The other came on a Hugh Johnson shot.

Cameron Bergamn scored five for the Braves. Luke Rogers and Nevin Stoltzfus each scored four. WRESTLING

Liam McGinley placed fifth in the 120-pound weight class on Saturday, January 29, earning 17 team points for Pequea Valley at the L-L League Wrestling Championships. The two days of wrestling - Friday and Saturday, January 28-29 - were held at Manheim Township.

McGinley had an opening-round bye. He did not waste time in the second round, pinning Trent Good of Cedar Crest in only 36 seconds.

In the quarterfinals he also worked a pin, victimizing Steven Rosado of Elco

The undefeated Eric Howe of Lancaster Catholic, who brought a 28-0 record into the tournament, won on a technical in the semis. In the consolation semis, Hempfield’s Zy McCainMurray earned a 14-8 decision over McGinley, sending the Pequea senior to the fifth-place match where he again faced Rosado. In this match, McGinley needed only 15 seconds to register a pin.

Adam Reber had a bye in the first round of the 113-pound bracket and, following his loss to Township’s Kaedyn Williams, he had a consolation bye before winning via forfeit and coming up short in the fourth round of the consolations.

Zach Hollenbaug gained two team points in the 189 brackets. He suffered a loss to Jonathan Lopez of Conestoga Valley. Located at 800 Village Road, Lancaster, the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA branch opened in 2007. “We don’t like to really see ourselves as a ‘gym and swim,’” said executive director Rick Wagner. “We want to be a pillar of the community, so we like to offer community-based programming.” The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA offers programs such as swim lessons, summer camp, youth and adult basketball, diabetes prevention, personal training, adult volleyball, CPR and first aid training, e-sports, and more. In addition, the Y does not turn people away based on ability to pay. It offers financial assistance for those who are unable to afford membership rates.

“We have such a great diversity,” noted Wagner. “We have people of different ages, races, and backgrounds. It’s like a community inside of a building, which is really nice.”

Due to COVID-19, the LampeterStrasburg YMCA was closed during part of 2020. Since reopening, the branch has welcomed back 80% of its members and wants that number to grow. Moving forward, Wagner said he wants to build community partnerships and be viewed as an organization on which the community can rely.

Wagner explained that the Y was able to gain much of its membership back faster than anticipated in part due to the merger of the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County. The two entities merged into a single YMCA association, now known as the YMCA of the Roses, on Dec. 1, 2021. The grand opening of Village Park on April 10, 2021, offered the branch a little boost, too. “I kind of think of it as free advertising because so many families pass by our building on their way to sports practices,” stated Wagner.

The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA as some new events in the works. On Saturday, April 2, there will be a Splish-Splash Easter Egg Bash where participants will hunt for Easter eggs in the pool, and Healthy Kids Day will return on Saturday, April 30. More details on these events will come soon.

“If you want to feel welcome, if you want no judgments, if you want that community aspect where you’re not just coming to a gym but you’re coming to a family, then come here,” noted Wagner. “The YMCA is here not just for membership but any type of community-based relationship or community-based need.”
