First Kindergarten Expo Planned

Annual Sportsmen’s Banquet To Return The Ephrata Area Churches’ annual sportsmen’s banquet was canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year, the group, which includes about a dozen Ephrata- and Akron-area churches, is planning to hold the event. The speaker will be Tracy Breen, a fulltime outdoor writer, speaker, and marketing consultant. He will speak on the topic of “Outwitting a Big Game Animal’s Senses.” See Sportsmen’s Banquet pg 3

“We want families to have information, especially if they’re new to the district.” Kindergarten Readiness Kits will also be available at the expo for parents who have not received them yet. Eckert noted that the idea is to get the kits into the hands of the parents of the more than 100 incoming learners as quickly as possible. “We received a grant from the (Lancaster County) Community Foundation to provide kits for all our incoming learners,” said Eckert. PVSD purchased pre-assembled kits and then added more items, along with a folder of instructions for

parents. Eckert said the kits include scissors, pencils, and dice, and the folder includes information about immunizations; a Braves Bingo card, which offers a variety of activities to prepare for kindergarten; and a checklist for parents. Along with picking up a kit, parents can sign up for Transition Nights, which were offered for the first time in 2021. Transition Nights will be held at Paradise and Salisbury elementary schools in late April or early May. Each night will have a theme. “We will have a literacy night, a math night, and a social and emotional learning night,” said Eckert, who noted that teachers, principals, counselors, and nurses will all be at the schools. “(Families will) experience the school, meet the staff, and learn about a topic,” said Eckert, who noted that dinner will be provided. “We want families to have information, especially if they’re new to the district,” explained Eckert. “We hope to have that one-to-one connection to share what we have to offer and (help families) to know the district before the children start kindergarten.” Readers who have questions may email lisa_eckert@pequeavalley.org or call 717-381-5020.

“We are very excited. This is the first time we have done this,” said Lisa Eckert, director of early learning for the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD). Eckert’s excitement is related to Kindergarten Expo 2022. Kindergarten Expo 2022 will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event will be designed for those whose children will enter kindergarten in the fall of 2022. Kindergarten Expo 2022 will offer parents a place to turn in paperwork, including birth certificates, immunization records, proof of residency, and parental identification information. The event will also include online registration stations, information about transition activities, a free book for each newly registered kindergartner, refreshments, door prizes, and more. Eckert has arranged for local organizations, including the Pequea Valley Public Library, Pequea Valley youth sports leagues, the Paradise Parent Teacher Organization, the Salisbury Parent Teacher Committee, The Factory Ministries and Community Action

Eckert believes the timespan of the drop-in event will give parents plenty of opportunities to stop by. “We will hopefully reach as many families as possible,” she said, noting that computers will be set up at the expo so that those without regular online access can register a child with assistance if needed.

According to Kim McDevitt, director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), parents of children facing mental health issues could benefit from working with others who really understand their situation. “We feel there is a gap in services in terms of supporting the parents,” said McDevitt. “We don’t want (parents) to be alone in this.” To fill that gap, MHALC is launching family peer support, a program that provides parents with trained volunteer peers who understand what they are going through and understand the mental health system. “Support is known to be effective,” said Rosie Mann, family peer support program consultant, who cited national studies of family peer support that show that intervention results in better school attendance and need for fewer disciplinary supports, among other benefits. According to Mann, peers are able to interact with parents in ways that clinicians cannot. “(A peer can) take away a sense of shame and judgment from a parent,” Mann explained. “When (advice) comes from a peer, (he or she is saying), ‘I have tried this and it worked. Maybe you want to try it.’” Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health issues among young people have been on the rise. “The surgeon general put out an advisory for youth mental health,” said McDevitt. “(Since the beginning of the pandemic) there has been a 51% increase in emergency room visits for (girls) who have attempted suicide.” For boys, the number is up as well. Breen is from Muskegon, Mich., where he was raised by a family that included a number of hunters and trappers, who introduced him to their love of outdoor adventures when he was quite young. His father made a living trapping into the late 1970s, when he turned to taxidermy. His father’s influence led Breen to choose a career in the great outdoors.

Raised in a Christian home, Breen sought to connect his faith with his work in a significant way. He has served as editor of God’s Great Outdoors Internet Outdoor Magazine, and he has written for New Pioneer, Petersen’s Bowhunting, and Outdoor Life. He has experienced hunting, fishing, and speaking throughout North America. Breen has cerebral palsy, which affects much of his right side. When he speaks at game dinners

and other outdoor-themed events, he often discusses the struggles and disappointments he has been dealt, sharing how God has used his life as he overcomes physical challenges. Library Receives Grant

Tracy Breen will speak at the Ephrata Area Churches sportsmen’s banquet on March 11.

The Ressler Mill Foundation awarded a grant of $3,000 to the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL) at the end of 2021. Catherine O’Sullivan, director of PVPL, reported that the foundation asked that the funds be used to purchase books and/or technology. O’Sullivan plans to use the money for areas of the library’s collection

that she feels need attention, such as costly large-print books. She also plans to update nonfiction collections for adults at PVPL and at the Salisbury Branch of the library located at Houston Run. She noted that the funds will help her to purchase items that are relevant and that she is very grateful for the grant. Books purchased using grant

The Pequea Valley girls’ basketball team registered a decisive victory over Lancaster Mennonite in a Friday night Lancaster-Lebanon League game on the road. The Braves improved their league mark to 4-2, breaking out of the gate with a 20-5 run and going on to claim a 60-22 triumph. The Braves, who improved to 8-8 overall, limited the Blazers to single digit scoring for each quarter of the game. “They just didn’t handle our pressure,” head coach Jason McDonald explained. “We made the game a track meet and they couldn’t keep up.” Shania Stoltzfus drilled a pair of three-point jump shots for the Braves and went on to finish with a teamleading 13 points. Breanne Beiler finished with nine points as did Katie Stoltzfus, who scored all of her points from three-point range. “She pretty much has a green light to take those shots whenever

The Braves made it a pattern of playing a team with “Lancaster” in its name and coming out to a fast start. On Tuesday, January 25, they faced Lancaster County Christian on the road. The Braves outscored their opponent 23-10 in the opening period. However, unlike the Mennonite game, this was not a runaway victory. County Christian battled back and, in fact, outscored the Braves 28-15 over the next two periods. “We were going for layups and getting to the basket in the first quarter,” said McDonald. “We weren’t hitting anything in the second and third quarters. We decided we would shoot everything from 15 to 20 feet.” Pequea’s game began to right itself in the final stanza, helping to add a number in their “W” column with a 56-52 victory. The win improved Pequea to 9-8 (5-2 league). “Midway through the third quarter we looked tired,” McDonald remarked, noting that the Lions came back and took the lead. “In the fourth we regained momentum and took back the lead.” Sarah Arment led all scorers with 29 points - a career high for the Braves junior. She connected twice from three-point range. “Her previous career high was 21,” McDonald noted. “She scored 10 in the first and 13 in the fourth quarter. They are fundamentally sound. “They are very aggressive and really get after it,” Rittenhouse added. The Blazers’ level of play lifted them to a 71-41 victory. Jaedon Mast led Mennonite with 14 points, and Camden Hurst added 13. Both teammates went 4-for-4 at the foul line. “It’s hard for us to compete against teams like that,” said Rittenhouse, whose Braves fell to 2-4 in L-L League play. “We play a lot of 4A and 5A teams on the schedule.” Joerick Irizarry led the Braves with 12 points. He connected twice from three-point range and went 2for-2 at the charity stripe. “He is a sophomore who has been put in a tough position of being our point guard this year,” Rittenhouse said of Irizarry. “We have a lot of sophomores - a strong sophomore class who get experience on varsity.” Cam Beiler added nine points for the Braves. “Cam has been a workhorse,” commented the coach. “He might be undersized in most games, but he has battled every single game.” The Braves were coming off a nonleague loss to Lancaster County Christian on Wednesday, January 19. With a high-scoring first period, the Lions roared to a 21-11 lead. The Braves kept pace for the next two periods, but a big fourth quarter lifted the Lions to a 57-29 victory. Nevin Stoltzfus led the Braves in scoring again. His 10-point total included a pair of treys. Irizarry added five points, including a three-point basket. Josh Glessner scored 20 points, including three treys, for the Lions.

“Nevin Stoltzfus has a lot of weight on his shoulders, being the only returning varsity player from last year,” Rittenhouse remarked. “He has taken the reins of a young team. He has had some very good games. “We’re not a high-scoring team, but we can depend on him to put points on the scoreboard for us,” Rittenhouse added. WRESTLING The Braves lost to Wyomissing in the first round of the Pequea Valley Tri-Meet on Saturday, January 22. The Spartans topped the Braves 54-21 and went on to edge Schuylkill Valley 3936 in the finale. Sophomore Adam Reber put Pequea on the board early in the match. His second-period pin in the 113-pound match evened the score at 6-6 after the Braves had to forfeit the 106-pound class. The Braves would end up forfeiting seven of the weight classes, giving the Spartans 42 uncontested points in an otherwise close match. Liam McGinley won a classic battle with Ashton Melendez of Wyomissing, finishing on top 14-11 at 126. Zach Hollenbaugh came away with a third-period pin at 189 while Jovanni Candelario (215) earned six uncontested points for Pequea on a forfeit.

Mann added, “You have a child that threatens suicide and goes to the emergency room, and the doctor says, ‘You’re all right (to go home),’ but when you go home, you still have a family whose child threatened suicide. They are in crisis that their child feels that way.” Mann said that is where family peer support steps in. “Parent education programs are part of supports for families,” said Mann, who noted that the program can help parents determine what classes and other support systems will best serve them. While clinical care is meant to produce outcomes over time, Mann noted many parents need help with daily issues. “With parents, oftentimes, they have had so much clinical care, but they still can’t get through a day. That’s where we come in,” Mann said. Mann and McDevitt both noted that family peer support can provide parents with a sense of empowerment and efficacy. “Efficacy is the power to change my circumstances,” noted Mann, who said the idea is to battle the sense of helplessness and hopelessness parents often feel.

Mann said that her goal in family peer support is to halve parents’ distress and double their joy. While having a peer to share distress with provides support, sharing joy means emphasizing a child’s successes to make parenting pleasurable and keep parents and children connected in spite of the challenges they face.
