WhenKeith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants Inc., looks for volunteers, carpentry, HVAC, and plumbing skills are not necessarily a requirement. “Physical (home) repairs are important, but we also put an emphasis on building relationships,” said Cotton of Servants Inc., an organization that performs home repairs and construction for those in need.
“I think one of the things a lot of our clients are facing, in addition to the physical hardship of needing home repairs, is loneliness,” Cotton pointed out, adding that many clients are widowed people or single mothers. “(They are) people who need support in general,” said Cotton. “For that reason, the organization’s volunteer application asks candidates to rate their skill levels, but Cotton commented that this is not meant to exclude anyone. “It just gives us a better idea where we can plug people in, so they can feel useful,” he explained.

Hess relayed. Hess used an internet program to confirm the contact.

The application helps Servants Inc. put teams together and pair willing learners with those who have the ability to teach. There’s a need for skilled workers as well. “We have some intense projects that involve plumbing and framing,” Cotton said.
Servants Inc., which now has a full-time project manager in Lancaster County, is mostly active in the ELANCO area as well as Columbia and Marietta. During the week, Thursday is the designated volunteer workday, but Saturdays are scheduled to accommodate working volunteers and students. Right now, volunteers are needed as the organization’s client list is growing. “It’s a delicate balance,” said Cotton of expanding the client and volunteer lists at the same time.
Since opening a Lancaster County branch a few years ago, the nonprofit has f ormed a partnership with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “(CrossNet) does intake applications … for the services we provide,” said Cotton.
Marilyn Guzmán, social services program manager with CrossNet, reported that one family feared losing its home due the building’s condition. “We prayed, and God sent us a miracle in the form of men and women who work with and volunteer with Servants,” family members told Guzmán, noting that the volunteers were kind and understanding. “Just knowing we
now have a safe home helps us sleep better at night, they told her.
Servants Inc. has also partnered with ELANCO Connect, which includes several greater Bowmansville area churches. Servants Inc. is hoping to provide a local halfweek work camp experience during the summer months. The organization has also
become involved in the Pequea Valley School District First Choice Discovery Program, a work-based program offering career exploration and mentoring to every sophomore, to introduce students to developing home repair skills.
The organization, which has branches in York and Adams counties, completed
more than 110 projects and had more than 10,000 volunteer hours total in 2022. Servants Inc. also sends recovery teams to areas of the U.S. hit by disasters as well as organizing international missions teams. Those who wish to volunteer may visit www. servants.org and click on the “Volunteer” tab or call 717378-0336.

PV Braves Stumble Against Country Day
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
In a Lancaster-Lebanon League boys’ basketball game on the road, the Pequea Valley Braves kept pace with Lancaster Country Day on Thursday, January 12. The Cougars’ dominant second quarter, in which they outscored the Braves 20-5, proved to be the difference in a 68-44 final. Pequea Valley fell to 2-11 (0-2 league).
“ We struggled with their zone defense,” Braves head coach Thad Rittenhouse explained. “They were trapping us and causing us to commit a lot of turnovers.”
The second half of this game was much different than the first. The Braves inched close, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Country Day’s Toby Ashby led all scorers with 25 points.
Christian Hoin added 15.
“If we learn to take care of the ball better and get through that pressure, we would be in games a lot more,” Rittenhouse remarked.
Leading the Braves in scoring was Myles Furlong. The junior’s jump shots from three-point range were on target four times to account for his 12 points. Joerick Irizarry and Hugh Johnson each nailed a three-point bucket as well, each finishing with seven points on the night.
“Myles is one of our better shooters,” Rittenhouse said. “He is getting back into the swing of things more and more after starting slow this year due to an injury.”
The Pequea boys’ basketball team put up some impressive numbers on offense in a nonleague contest at Susquenita on Saturday. The Braves nearly blanked the Blackhawks in the first quarter, carrying a 21-4 lead into the second stanza. The visiting Braves regained momentum coming out of the locker room for the second half, outscoring the Blackhawks 32-21 en route to a 63-39 win.
“Our guys went out and played very well,” said Rittenhouse. “We did a very good job with our press.
“ We had several fast breaks in this game,” continued the coach. “Something has been a struggle for us. But with the
pressure we gave them, it turned into some turnovers f or them and opportunities for us to get easy buckets. We did a better job scoring.”
Speaking of scoring, Irizarry was finding the open shots to the count of 23 points - seven field goals and nine free throws.
“Irizarry is one of our best ball handlers,” Rittenhouse said. “He’s the toughest guy the opposing teams have to defend. Some of the other coaches have commented that he’s a challenge to other teams because they have to double up on him. He’s pretty quick and able to penetrate.”
Jackson Neff made three treys, compiling nine points. Nathan Blank finished eight. A total of 10 Pequea players got into the scoring column, including Luke Rogers (6 pts)
“Luke is starting to come into his own as our center,” added Rittenhouse.
Pequea fell to Columbia 5534 on the road Tuesday night in L-L League action. While holding the Braves to singledigit scoring in three of the f our periods, the Crimson Tide somehow managed to hold Irizarry to only nine points. Neff scored six points while both Blank and Rogers finished with five.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Dating back to the nonleague home game with Biglerville back on December 21, adding the Brandywine Heights Holiday Tournament games and the L-L League and
non-league games since New Year’s Day, the Pequea girls’ basketball team had won eight straight games. The defeats that bookended this win streak were both at the hands of Section Four foe Columbia.
The Braves fell to 13-2 (4-2 league) following their 47-32 loss at home to Columbia on Tuesday, January 17. The Braves trailed by only seven heading into the final period where the Crimson Tide (5-0 league) went on a 17-9 run.
Shania Stoltzfus, who connected on three three-point field goals, led the Braves with 15 points. Anae Patterson put up eight points.
Brooke and Brie Droege led Columbia with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Pequea posted a 54-35 win at Susquenita on Saturday in a non-league game. Patterson, a freshman, led the team in scoring with 16 points, including a 6-for-7 game at the free throw line. Breanne Beiler poured in 10 points while senior Sarah Arment contributed eight.
“ We will press and run you all over the floor,” Jason McDonald, the PV head coach, said of the team’s style of play. “It’s just when we get to half court, it’s different. I think we’re forcing like 24 turnovers a game.
“Our leaders are awesome,” he added. “We told them why we were doing what we are doing this year. It makes us more skilled and creative
offensively.
“ We’ve also been rebounding the ball better and just playing fundamentally sound basketball,” McDonald added.
That offense was in high gear on Thursday, January 12 as Pequea outscored Lancaster Country Day 65-51. The visiting Cougars, led by Genesis Meadows with 35 points, outscored the Braves 41-33 in the second half, Patterson swooshed in three treys and finished with a team-high 17. Shania Stoltzfus scored nine while both Morgan Graham and Peyton Henshaw scored eight points.

The 2023 event, presented by a partnership between RRR and the Winter Field Day Association, will be held at the Welsh Mountain Community Center and Park, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The group will begin to set up antennas at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, and the event will officially begin at 2 p.m. Winter Field Day will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. The event is held for 24 hours to include radio operators from all time zones.
Newly licensed and inexperienced operators as well as those with an interest in the hobby are encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate, and visitors are welcome to drop in anytime and bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight in the center.
Several seminars will be offered during the event. At 10 a.m. on Jan. 28, Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) will give a presentation. Hess noted that the organization practices emergency drills for the closed Three Mile Island and the functioning Peach Bottom nuclear power plants because ham radios continue to operate when cellphones cannot and in areas where cell services may be limited.
Additional workshops will instruct attendees in how to build three types of twometer antennas and one HF (high frequency) antenna. There is a nominal fee to build antennas to cover the costs of materials.
Presently, there are 50 licensed ham radio operators in the New Holland ZIP code
and more than 1,500 in the county. Hess believes a chance to converse internationally attracts many to the hobby.
“ We will be operating under our club call sign, so … anybody can come up and operate,” he said. “I can almost guarantee we will find someone outside the U.S. to talk to.” Hess noted that many visitors react positively to hearing a voice from another country over the radio. “People’s faces just light up,” he said.

man from that country visited him in 1993. The man told the couple about a vision he had of a church in Africa. In 1994, he told the Martins the vision had come true. Randy visited Kenya and fell in love with the country and its people. He began leading outreaches to Kenya, traveling there about 30 times, sometimes with Bonnie. In 2015, Randy had a vision that involved dropping the nail bag he wore in his construction business. Bonnie pointed out to him that in the vision, the nail bag dropped slowly to the ground, so Randy and Bonnie took their time, moving to Kenya and full-time ministry in 2018.
“ We went from a mom-andpop operation to a full-fledged ministry,” said Randy, who noted the 501(c)(3) has a board and staff in New Holland and five leaders overseeing aspects of the ministry in Thika. Among those ministries is the Africa Association of Bible Schools (AABS), of which Randy is the national director for Kenya.
“ We provide curriculum to empower leaders, and they run the school,” said Randy, who explained that through membership schools, certificates are awarded to students who meet
the criteria.
A large part of the Martins’ ministry involves community empowerment. Working through local churches, the ministry is helping farmers to improve milk and crop production and teaching efficient construction methods to help increase worker pay. “Our desire is to empower the community to give them sustainable incomes,” said Randy, who added that no-interest loans allow for the purchase of water pumps and beehives. Repayment of the loans is used to purchase similar items for others.
Organizing conferences to train leaders and pastors is another branch of the organization. In May of 2022, a conference held in Wote, Kenya, featured 12 U.S. leaders and attracted more than 300 Kenyans. More than 600 Kenyans are expected for a September conference, and in May, 400 Kenyan youths will interact with youths and leaders from the U.S. in teaching sessions and sporting events.
The Martins also travel with a portable stage and loudspeakers to do open air crusades. “We were the first to preach the Gospel of Jesus publicly in the

Shamoni region,” said Randy, who noted that close to 150 people accepted Jesus in the five-day effort. Randy dreams of having a truck equipped with a stage for this purpose. He would also like to see a church built in the area, noting that a 40-by-70-foot church can be built with the help of a U.S. team in about a week. Randy and Bonnie visit local churches
Smucker Moves District Office
Rep. Lloyd Smucker announced that his Lancaster district office moved to 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, and is fully operational as of Jan. 3. Constituent services continued uninterrupted.
Smucker’s new office space will give ample access to free parking for constituents. It is also located directly off Route 30, the main thoroughfare connecting Lancaster and York counties. The new office space comes with cost savings to the taxpayers.

in Kenya for revival services, and in the U.S., they help organize outreach teams to visit Kenya.
Now, the Martins are hoping to build a base in Kenya to enhance the construction and agriculture training they are doing there. More information about Preparing the Way may be found at www.ptwministries.org.

The Way frompg
improvement homewinter
Randy and Bonnie Martin have founded Preparing the Way Ministries based in Thika, Kenya.
Lancaster Bible College | Capital Seminary & Graduate School has named Calvin Reed the 2022 Alumnus of the Year. Reed, who earned his bachelor’s degree in pastoral studies from LBC in 1978, has served in ministry for 40 years.
After graduating from LBC, Reed went on to earn a Master of Divinity and also took Doctor of Ministry courses at Biblical Theological Seminary, now Missio Seminary, in Philadelphia. Reed also previously served as chairman of the board at Biblical Theological Seminary. He is making plans for retirement after four decades at Lebanon Bible Fellowship Church (LBFC).
After completing his graduate work, Reed began serving within Bible Fellowship Church, first in Reading, then in Lebanon. Under Reed’s longtime leadership, LBFC is “committed to equipping the saints and reaching the lost with the Gospel so that men and women can become committed disciples of Jesus Christ, in fellowship with God and one another.” As the senior pastor at LBFC, Reed works with two LBC alumni on the pastoral staff, and multiple LBC alumni and current students call LBFC their church home.
W hile at LBC, Reed served as the Student Council chaplain for a year as well as the junior class chaplain. He participated in choir and Wayfarers, a traveling singing group of about eight students. He
was also part of the Pastoral Interest Fellowship for three years, led tours for prospective students through the Student Service Corps and was a student representative on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education team when the college was working toward accreditation.
Calvin and his wife, Bonnie, have three daughters and three sons-in-law, all of whom attended or graduated from LBC | Capital. He also credits LBC Bible and theology professor Harold Kime for helping to prepare him for his time in ministry. At LBC, Reed shared, he was taught how to formulate argumentative outlines of Scripture, which he still uses in his preparation for preaching.
Over his ministry, Reed taught Sunday school and preached on both Sunday mornings and evenings on a regular basis. It is estimated that he has prepared and delivered over 5,000 messages and lessons. In addition, he has done extensive studies in the area of expository preaching.
An LBC Charger athletics fan, Reed enjoys attending LBC volleyball and basketball games to support the students in his congregation. He described himself as a lifelong learner and said he hopes to teach in retirement.
