Participants at Challenger Clubs - monthly Bible studies for individuals age 15 and up with physical or intellectual disabilities –do not always express their enjoyment of the experience verbally. “A grandmother told me recently that her grandson, who (shows little emotion) around his family, is so excited to attend,” said Meghan Martin, disability ministries assistant, Handi-Vangelism Ministries International (HVMI), which oversees the clubs. “There are so many smiles.”

HVMI has run Challenger Clubs at several Ephrata-area churches, including New Joy and Highpoint, along with the HVMI offices at 300 W. Chestnut St., Ephrata, and private residences, for several years. Now, the organization has expanded to the area south of Route 30 with a new club, which began serving residents of the greater Paradise area in

October 2022. The Challenger Club at Calvary Monument Bible Church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The club will continue to meet through April.

Martin said each club meeting begins with worship, followed by a Bible lesson and often a skit to enhance understanding of the lesson, and a memory verse. During small group time, participants work

on a booklet, which can be taken home at the end of the year, focused on life application of the lesson. Martin shared that the lessons are structured to be more palatable to participants. “We write

our own curriculum, and we are able to write in a way that we know has been successful in the past,” she said. “Parents can see the growth in their kids when they see them understanding and answering questions.

Whether recounting stories of catching black mambas by hand or surviving a shipwreck off the Alaskan coast, outdoorsman, author, and Christian musician Brent Henderson has one goal for his audiences. “They are listening to more than great outdoor stories,” said Henderson. “(Because) there’s a relationship (they) can have with the One who made it all.”

At the end of November 2022, Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) agricultural educators Doug Masser and Jasmine VanSant traveled to Las Vegas to accept an award from the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE). The program the teachers oversee at PVHS and Pequea Valley Intermediate School was recognized as the top program in the northeast region - one of six outstanding programs in the country to receive the award.

Henderson will share his stories with attendees of the Restart Training Center Ministry’s (RTCM) eighth annual sportsman dinner on Tuesday, March 21, and Wednesday, March 22, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have developed addictions as a means of coping with difficulties.

Originally from Bethlehem,

Pa., Henderson worked in a steel mill following high school leaving town to attend college in 1981, but instead venturing into Christian contemporary music. “I met a guy named Steven Curtis Chapman, and he and I traveled for a while,” recalled Henderson, who later played with artists Sandi Patty and Crystal Lewis and the group Avalon. In 2002, he became the worship leader and ministry pastor with an organization in Meadville. “God moved me into speaking full time to men,” said Henderson,

who credited God with mixing his passion for men’s ministry with his love for the outdoors in his talks. “It was the perfect fit.” In that capacity, he likes to bring audience members to the edges of their seats. “I have hunted everywhere from Africa to Alaska,” noted Henderson. “I’ve had a lot of crazy experiences.” Among those are a brown bear attack and being stranded in the mountains when the flight back was delayed by bad weather. “(The stories) always lead back to God’s faithfulness and care,” shared Henderson. Henderson is the author of “Into the Wilds” and “The Roar Within.”

Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of RTCM, said that Henderson was recommended by Don Higgins, who spoke at a previous sports banquet. In addition to hearing Henderson’s talk, attendees may bid on items in a live auction or purchse tickets for giveaways. Live auction items will include a cabin getaway, a 6-by6-foot octagon ground blind, a Puerto Rican meal for up to 10 people, a deep-sea fishing trip, and tickets to a men’s retreat being presented by Henderson.

Ticket auction items include an in-line muzzleloader, a Ravin R26X crossbow, and a Weber grill. Grand prizes will be a Mathews bow and a Wicked Ridge Raider 400 De-Cock.

Currently, RTCM is mounting a capital campaign with the goal of purchasing the former Strasburg Elementary School. The facility would offer 12 beds and provide rooms students could rent while working locally. RTCM would continue to provide meals, transportation, and a supportive environment. The goal is to raise $1.3 million to purchase the building and a total of $1.6 million to include funding for reservations.

Tickets, which are necessary to attend the banquet, will be discounted through Tuesday, Feb. 28. To purchase tickets, please call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org.

It’s a different aspect that parents don’t always see.”

Martin noted that parents may drop their children at the club or they are welcome to stay. “The respite piece is something we like to offer,” she pointed out.

According to Martin, volunteers are needed to work with HVMI staff aiding participants at each meeting.

“(Volunteers) may help with small group time or take part in the skit,” she said.

The Bible clubs are an extension of HVMI’s summer program, which provides uniquely designed camping experiences for individuals with disabilities.

“A lot of places provide fun activities for adults with disabilities, but our goal is to

focus on a Bible lesson,” explained Martin, who added that many participants enjoy the club so much they cannot wait to return. “We have a girl who just moved (to the Paradise area) with her family, and she has come to every meeting,” said Martin. “She was walking out the door after the last meeting, and she said to her mother, ‘What’s the date for the next one so I can put it on my calendar?’” reported Martin.

Readers who would like to learn more about HVMI may visit www.hvmi.org. Individuals who want to know more about volunteering or participation in a club may call 717-859-4777 or email mmartin@hvmi.org.

Rather than taking full credit for the achievement, Masser said he and VanSant prefer to think that everyone involved in the program is a winner. “Jasmine says, ‘It’s not just recognition of us as teachers,’” relayed Masser. “(She says), ‘It’s the students and the administration (too). It’s all of us.’”

Masser noted that the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) situation is unique because students live amongst farms, but they do not live on those farms. To acquaint students with agricultural subjects, the teachers have taken a two-pronged strategy, with a seventh-grade introductory course and a required 10thgrade class about bio-studies in agriculture. “That’s based on the PVSD belief that values the hands-on approach we use,” said Masser.

Beyond required courses, students are offered a selection of single-semester electives. “Courses are available in animal science, plant science, food science, agricultural mechanics, and a bit of environmental science,” said Masser, who explained that students take advantage of the variety by exploring both topics that they have strong interest in and those they simply want to learn more about. The result is that many students go into agrelated fields such as biomedical research, environmental science, and wildlife biology. Masser mentioned that courses offered in welding, small engines, electricity, and plumbing are related to agriculture. “We are sometimes the spark that gets them excited about those careers,” said Masser.

The program was first nominated for the Pennsylvania Association of Agriculture Educators award, which the district won in July of 2022. Upon receiving the state award, Masser and VanSant gathered information about the program to submit for consideration at the regional level, which Masser said spans from Virginia to Maine. Based on that submission, the program was selected as the winner. Masser and VanSant were invited to receive the award at the NAAE Convention from Nov. 29 through Dec. 3, 2022, which also included professional development opportunities. “It was cool to celebrate with our kids (when we returned),” commented Masser.

Readers who would like to learn more about PVSD may visit www.pequeavalley.org.

Child’s Play

Shortly after Thanksgiving 2022, Lou Ann Miller, who coordinates the displays for the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) Museum, began clearing out an exhibit to make room for a collection of metal toys produced by J. Chein & Company beginning in 1903. The display overflows two cases into two smaller additional displays. Miller wanted the toys to be on exhibit for children and parents who visited during the holidays, but the colorful pieces of children’s playthings collected by Liz Bicking and her late husband, Lawrence, will be on display into the spring and maybe the summer.

Before setting up the exhibit, Miller researched the toy manufacturer, which was started in Manhattan by Julius Chein, an immigrant from Russia of Jewish descent. The company made small, metal stamped toys, which at first were hand painted. “Later it was lithographs,” said Miller, an artist herself, who called the artwork and lithographs “beautiful.”

The company grew quickly, moving to Harrison, N.J., in 1907 and boasting 300 employees by 1913. J. Chein’s marketing and distribution brought the company into notable associations that propelled it forward, including an exclusive partnership with F. W. Wool-

worth and a contract to put small metal toys, such as whistles, in boxes of Cracker Jacks.

The Chein company was known for toys such as sand buckets and funnels, but by 1915, Julius had acquired a patent for a bank that flashed the amount of a deposited coin when it was slipped through the slot. The company also produced extra-large toys in its Hercules line, which Miller said were heavy gauge and up to 18 inches long.

When Julius died in 1926, his wife, Elizabeth, became president, but by 1931, the company was struggling. Enter Samuel Hoffman, Elizabeth’s brother and founder of a com-

peting toy manufacturer. Miller expressed her admiration for the toys produced during Hoffman’s stint running the company, noting that the plant made metal Easter rabbits and chicks, spinning tops, and spring-wound toys during that time period.

In 1942, the company aided the World War II effort by making war materials such as munitions and casings for incendiary devices. The first items the organization produced in 1946 utilized a bazooka rocket nose cone repurposed into a bank.

By the 1960s, the company was producing metal toys emblazoned with likenesses of

Charles Schulz’s Peanuts characters. “(The display) traces the history of toys,” noted Miller, who pointed out that America’s changing taste in playthings for children is reflected inthe exhibit. Facing competition from plastic toys and criticism from the Consumer Product Safety Commission for sharp edges on some toys, J. Chein eventually gave up toy making and became Chein Industries, producing housewares into the 1990s.

The museum, which is located at 207 E. Main St., New Holland, is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Tuesday and Saturday or by appointment by calling 717- 538-3079.

Braves Suffer Non-League Loss at Millersburg

In a tough non-league loss on the road Tuesday, January 3, the PV boys’ basketball team let one slip away in the final period.

The Millersburg Indians built a 31-22 halftime lead and needed an extra push in the fourth quarter to hold off the Braves by a 68-54 margin. Pequea Valley fell to 2-8 on the year.

Myles Furlong was on target four times from threepoint range, finishing with 14 points on the night. Luke Rogers tied Furlong for the team lead in points, putting up seven baskets. Nathan Blank’s nine points all came thanks to his three long-range jump shots. Joerick Irizarry also nailed a trey and finished with seven points.

Speaking of tough losses, the Braves suffered a 45-43 loss to Dayspring Christian Academy on Thursday, December 29. The Braves outscored the Warriors 18-11 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get the gametying bucket.

Jackson Neff had a gamehigh 24 points for Pequea, including five baskets from beyond the three-point arc. Rogers scored seven for the Braves.

The next day, the Braves said good-bye to 2022 with a

non-league home game with Camp Hill. Outscoring Pequea 16-5 in the first and 17-11 in the fourth was the bookend output Camp Hill needed to post a 53-39 victory.

Neff and Landyn Mealey each scored nine for the Braves with all of Mealey’s points coming on three treys. Ben Ellis of Camp Hill had a game-high 16.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The Pequea Valley Braves have charged out to a fast start for the 2022-23 girls’ basketball campaign, winning eight of their first nine contests.

Head coach Jason McDonald attributed the strong start to a great work ethic by the players.

“The kids came in over the summer and worked hard,” he said. “It carried over from the off-season to the season.

“We have installed some new things and the kids have bought into it,” he added. “They have worked hard day in and day out.”

The Braves closed out the calendar year with victories at the Brandywine Heights Holiday Tournament, defeating Executive Education Academy 30-14 on Tuesday, December 27 and topping the host school 37-28 the next day to claim the tournament trophy.

“Executive Education

Academy played a zone we weren’t accustomed to seeing,” McDonald explained. “They tried to slow the game down and they succeeded.

“In the Brandywine Heights game, we didn’t play well in the first half, but came out with more confidence in the second half,” continued the coach.

The slow start against Executive Education Academy netted two points for the Braves in the first quarter. However, Pequea put up 14 points in the second quarter and finished with a dominant fourth quarter. Janae Patterson had a match-leading 12 points and Shania Stoltzfus scored seven for PV.

The Braves actually trailed 17-5 at intermission in the Brandywine Heights game. They outscored their opponent 32-11 in the second half.

Patterson poured in 20 points and Stoltzfus scorched a pair of treys for her six points of the game. Sarah Arment scored five points - all from the free throw line.

Asked about the leading scorers on the team, however, McDonald replied, “It seems like every game we have somebody different. It’s amazing the kind of success you have when you’re moving the ball well and looking for the open player.”

Like many 8-year-olds, Viola Rothacker loves animals. She even has a favorite pet, but it’s not furry or fourlegged. It’s a Mexican kingsnake named Dandelion. She’s completely comfortable around snakes, lizards, turtles and other creatures, handling them like a pro, because loving reptiles is in her DNA. Her father, Jesse Rothacker, operates Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary out of his home in Manheim.

Jesse started Forgotten Friend in 2004. “I knew there were a lot of people looking for a place to rehome reptiles,” he said, noting that many people underestimate how large reptiles will grow as well as their long lifespan. He realized that places like

Humane Pennsylvania couldn’t easily take in reptiles since their shelters were already full of cats and dogs. “I know people love reptiles, and I knew there was a need for a rescue,” Jesse recalled. “I thought, ‘I can start one.’”

Jesse, who grew up in southern California but moved to Lititz as a teen, has been a lifelong reptile fan. “In the ’90s as a teenager, I got my first pet snake, Leon,” he stated. “I loved him, and I took him everywhere.” In fact, he even got a detention at Warwick High School, where he graduated in the Class of 2000, for bringing Leon to school without permission.

In the early days of Forgotten Friend, he took in every reptile he could, with the hopes of rehoming them all. As the rescue grew, he shifted gears to refer people or provide information on their reptile, although he still takes in some animals. His business, now a nonprofit, receives most of its funding from the live shows Jesse offers - often accompanied by Viola and her brother, Kenny, 12 - at local schools, churches, libraries and birthday parties. “We did

275 live shows this past year,” Jesse said.

Although both kids help with the shows, and Jesse’s wife, Kim, is a patient supporter of Jesse’s passion, it’s Viola who has really blossomed in the business, Jesse said.

“She shares my view on reptiles,” he stated. “Ever since I was little, if I saw a reptile, I wanted to get closer.”

By age 1, Viola was making television appearances with her dad, and he proudly shows off a video of Viola at about age 3, crying while Jesse records a large blood python. “She’s crying because I wouldn’t let her pet it,” he said.

Viola loves helping her father with reptile care (they grow their own roaches and large mealworms for feeding their brood) and visiting the reptiles that live in the family’s basement.

“I really like to hold the animals,” Viola shared, noting that she also enjoys teaching others about the often-misunderstood creatures. “I like to tell people, ‘It’s OK. It’s not going to hurt you.’”

Jesse cautions that reptiles require respect when interacting with them and noted that he’s been bitten “thousands” of times, but that hasn’t dimmed his desire to help reptiles.

“Reptiles are magical and mysterious,” he said. “They’re quiet, but if you look into their eyes, there is a light on in the attic.”

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets and senior members from the Pennsylvania Wing, including members of the Jesse Jones Squadron 304, Lititz, participated in Wreaths Across America at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville on Dec. 17.

During an hourlong ceremony honoring veterans from each branch of service, Squadron 304 cadets participated in the Line of Patriots to honor the procession. Following the ceremony, cadets and senior members assisted with laying wreaths at the graves of United States veterans.

The remembrance wreathlaying ceremony aims to express honor and respect for veterans. More than 2.7 million wreaths were laid countrywide at over 3,700 locations, with over 42,000 wreaths laid at Indiantown

Gap National Cemetery. When volunteers lay the wreaths, they are encouraged to say the veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice and take a moment to reflect on that person and their life.

Wreaths Across America’s mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families, and teach future generations about the price of freedom. This mission is carried out all year.

Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday except holidays at 7 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, located at the Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are welcome. Service to one’s community, state and nation is a primary part of the cadet programs within CAP.

The Civil Air Patrol is the allvolunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary. For more information, visit www.GoCivilAirPatrol.com or www.CAP.news. Details about the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 are available at www.Jesse Jones.cap.gov and by searching for “Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304” on Facebook.
