Troop J Holds First “Shop With A Cop” BY ANN MEAD ASH
Officer Kelly Osborne, community service/public information officer with Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster and the organizer of the first Shop With a Cop event held on Dec. 5 at Lafayette Fire Company, was overwhelmed at the response she
received when she began planning the program in early fall. “I have been amazed at the outpouring and generosity of people for this program,” said Osborne, who hopes to expand the event into other areas of the county in the future. See Troop J pg 3
Kerri Burns, food market director at The Factory Ministries, has been overseeing drive-through food distribution since March. As of early December, The Factory Market is open for clients.
Hometown Heroes: Feeding Pequea Valley erri Burns, food market director at The Factory Ministries, remembers when the organization decided to set up drivethrough food distribution for clients during the first days of the COVID-19 shutdown in March. “I thought, ‘We can do this for a couple of weeks,’” recalled Burns. “I didn’t think we would do it long term.” Burns was able to discontinue the regular drive-through service at the end of October. According to Burns, the number of families receiving food more than tripled from 50 families a week to 160 families per week since March. “There have been no boundaries and no questions,” said Burns. As she talked, Burns showed her humility, breaking into tears as she credited volunteers, local businesses, and community members with stocking the pantry and distributing the food since the pandemic began. “The real heroes are the volunteers I have had working for months who come faithfully every Tuesday and Thursday,” said Burns, who went on to mention volunteers who pick up food daily at local convenience and grocery stores or donate milk. She stressed the community response to Food Friday collections and the support of area
Previous years’ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfasts have attracted more than 700 community leaders who gathered in one place to honor King’s legacy through performances, community awards, and a keynote speech. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, when attendees gather, they will do so virtually. The 33rd annual event will be held Monday, Jan. 18, from 9 to 10 a.m. in a livestreamed format.
