Drivingalong Cambridge Road in Gap between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, one cannot miss the shape of Santa Claus in a helicopter outlined in colorful lights that is perched on the roof of the house at 193 Cambridge Road. Each year, on Thanksgiving night, the jolly old elf in his flying machine comes to light along with about 360 other characters and more than 45,000 lights when resident Norm Montgomery Jr. flips the switch.

Norm Jr. noted that his family had recently discussed how long they have been illuminating the home. “We have been trying to figure that out,” he said, stating that his sister believes the mass decorating began in 1984 - nearly 40 Christmases ago. Norm Jr. recalls that the first year there were about

10 large ornaments in front of the house, but with each consecutive Christmas, he has added more.

The layout, which starts with a pathway adjacent to the parking area and winds around the back to the opposite side, is designed by Norm Jr. with slight variations each year. Norm Jr. said it takes about six weeks to set up the walkway, which includes a variety of figures and characters related to Christmas. “We have Disney characters and penguins,” Norm Jr. said, standing in front of a choir of child-size carolers. The yard also features snowmen, bears, toy soldiers, reindeer, candy canes, elves, angels, and two trains. A large lighted Nativity fills the front porch. A second scene lights the entrance to the path. Norm Jr. tries to have a live Santa present at least during the Saturday prior to Christmas.

He believes visitors started walking through - as opposed to just driving by - the display about 20 years ago, but, although attendance estimates run as high as 1,000 a year, that number was not tracked until 2022 when a registration book was added. Monetary donations are accepted to defray electric and other expenses.

Each year, Norm Jr. sets a goal of starting work on the display by Oct. 31. “I do 95% of the set up myself,” he said, adding that he counts on Norm Sr. for help with some strings of lights and extension cords.

Acquiring more decorations is on Norm Jr.’s Dec. 26 schedule, with yearly purchases ranging from a few pieces to more than 15. “I go out when everything is half off,” he said, adding that he discovered Santa’s chopper at a yard sale in Leola about a decade ago. For 2022, Norm Jr. added Christmas trees made of lights along the front fence. “I really like those (trees),” he said. “They are simple, but they look good.”

More information may be found by searching for “Montgomery Christmas House” on Facebook.

Alisa Sholly, who has participated in No Longer Alone Ministries family support group meetings for about a decade is grateful for the experience. “As the name says, I no longer feel alone in knowing how to deal with mental health concerns involving loved ones,” said Sholly. “I receive valuable information on mental health topics, a listening ear from others that can understand, and prayer.”

Michele Sipel, director of InHome Services with Landis at Home a division of Landis Communities, is well attuned with the mission of the support group, which meets monthly at Landis Homes. Sipel serves as a liaison for the group, which provides a safe place to open up for those who have a loved one living with mental illness. “It’s a different world, and unless you live it, you don’t know (what it’s like),” said Sipel. “It’s one of those subjects where there’s a lot of stigma, but it is so important.”

Ladies’ Bible Study Posted

Faith Bible Chapel, 140 Bernard Ave., Cochranville, will host a weekly ladies’ Bible study on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. beginning Jan. 11. The 14-week program will focus on the book of Revelation.

The Bible study will be an informal discussion group, a

time to get to know other women, and an opportunity to learn from God’s Word. Copies of the book may be purchased at the first meeting.

Women from all denominations are welcome to attend. For details, call Shirley at 610-593-6333.

Meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month. The next support group meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The January meeting

will include a video by Dr. Matthew Stanford, PhD, followed by discussion.

The support group was an offshoot of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), which functioned in Lancaster from 1991 to 2019. When NLAM closed its doors, a peer support group and the family support group overseen by the ministries were transferred to local entities. The peer support group, called Paths to Discovery, became part of Faith Friendship Ministries, and the family support group transferred to Landis, where several of the founding members live.

Landis offered personnel with the necessary expertise to help organize the group as well. Sipel noted that Evon Bergey, vice president of community initiatives with Landis Homes, is from a behavioral health background and added that she and other organizers work with Bob Musser, a licensed social worker who worked with NLAM, to plan meetings, line up speakers, and facilitate meetings. The group began meeting at Landis Homes in January of 2020. After the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, the group met virtually. In 2023, January, February, and March meetings will be held via Zoom so that inclement weather will not be a deterrent. The group plans to meet virtually once each quarter so that those who cannot come to Landis Homes may attend.

Among the past topics that were covered at meetings are innovations in treatment, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcoming grief, mental health and the Bible, and bringing healing to senior care.

Sipel said the group provides an atmosphere of caring and acceptance. “You get to know each other, so people feel comfortable being vulnerable. It is very therapeutic to be able to speak about what you’re going through with others who have lived it and understand.”

Sholly noted that NLAM has provided her with optimism.

“It is a place to find hope when things seem hopeless,” she said. “I encourage anyone who is struggling or knows someone that is struggling with mental health issues to attend. It has been a Godsend for me and my family.”

To register for the January Zoom meeting, contact 717-381-3599 or jalbright @landis.org by noon on Friday, Jan. 20.

Alisa Sholly invites members of the community whose lives have been touched by mental health issues to join the No Longer Alone Ministries family support group, which meets at Landis Homes.

Submitted by Leona Baker, president of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, withinputbyRitaWert

Several years ago, Bud Zimmerman, a well-known businessman in the Gap/Christiana area, donated a coverlet once owned by his grandmother to the Historical Society of Salisbury Township. The design featured more than 50 hand-embroidered circles, each consisting of up to 35 hand-stitched names in a pieshaped formation. The only thing Bud knew about the coverlet was that a Gap organization called the WCTU had created it in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. How Bud’s grandmother ended up with the coverlet was unknown.

The center circle of signatures contains the words “Gap WCTU ... Mrs. M. Coates, Pres.” While there may be a few in the community today who can remember what those letters stand for, research was needed to discover more about this coverlet and why it had been constructed.

The Women’s Christian Temperance Association (WCTU) was founded in 1873.

Believing that women are morally superior, the organization operated on the premise that alcohol and other drugs were the cause of society’s larger problems. The goal was “to protect the morals of the family through total abstinence of ... (all addictive substances).” Within 10 years, there were more than a thousand local affiliates nationally, called “unions.”

Local chapters were largely autonomous but linked to state and national headquar-

ters. The association grew to become the largest and most influential women’s group in the 19th century. Very soon, branches had spread throughout the world. Believing that social problems were interconnected, eventually the movement would embrace prison and labor law reform.

Member groups eventually added the right for women to vote in order “to protect the home and cure society’s ills.”

It is believed that the prohibition of alcoholic beverage sales, enacted in 1919 as the 18th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States,

was the direct outcome of WCTU lobbying. It prohibited the making, transport and sale of all alcoholic beverages in the United States.

According to Bud, the Gap chapter encouraged people of the township to pay to have their names embroidered on squares in the pie design of the coverlet. People paid 5 cents to have their name within the cir-

cle and 25 cents for their name to be on the perimeter of the circle. The squares eventually were joined together to form the coverlet. The finished project was then auctioned off, financing the local chapter’s participation in the national

America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, is observed on and around Nov. 15 to educate residents of the commonwealth and encourage them to be mindful of what they consume, learn where and how to properly recycle, and pledge to recycle correctly and more often in their everyday lives.

In celebration of America Recycles Day, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful highlighted the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP). Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is partnering with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to implement the CLPP at 14 state welcome centers in 2022 and 2023. The program aims to raise travelers’ awareness of the issue of proper cigarette butt disposal using messaging and marketing campaigns and placing ash receptacles at entrances to rest stop build-

ings. The effectiveness of the program will be measured by comparing pre- and post-program scans or physical counts of cigarette butts and other tobacco products.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has a partnership with Terracylce to expand the program to include recycling and composting the cigarette butt waste. Cigarettes collected through CLPP are shipped to Terracycle where the various materials that make up a cigarette are separated and processed. The filters are melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled industrial products, such as plastic pallets. The residual tobacco and paper are composted in a specialized process.

Cigarette butts that are thrown on the ground can contaminate soil and ground water with chemicals and heavy metals and fatally

impact birds, animals and marine life, which often mistake them for food. Aditionally, the filters, made of cellulose acetate, never fully disappear from the environment.

In support of America Recycles Day, all Pennsylvanians are encouraged to take the #BeRecycled pledge and promise to recycle at home, work and school, and on the go; buy products made with recycled content; and educate friends, family members, and neighbors, and encourage them to take the #BeRecycled pledge. To learn more, visit www.kab.org.

To find out more about the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program, visit www.keep pabeautiful.org and choose Programs, then Cigarette Litter Prevention, or contact Michelle Dunn at mdunn@ keeppabeautiful.org or 877772-3673, ext. 113.

Pieces Of The Past

When driving through eastern Lancaster County on Lincoln Highway, you might not notice a small, yellow building between Ronks and Soudersburg. Although the unassuming structure could pass as a quaint residence, within its walls resides a unique collection of history that has been assembled by its curator, Stephen Meyers.

Bible History Exhibits, located at 2827 East Lincoln Highway in Ronks, boasts a display of archaeological replicas and information that is related to the Bible. The exhibit begins with the book of Genesis and follows the Bible’s timeline through the book of Revelation; replicas of tablets, statues, weapons and scrolls that reference the

events of the Bible are placed in chronological order in the display. “Most people may be reading the Bible but may not know that there’s a lot of archaeology and discoveries that directly relate to it,” Meyers said.

Each replica refers to civilizations or events that existed at the same time as biblical characters if it does not refer to these characters directly. The beginning of the exhibit displays replicas of tablets that refer to the epic of Gilgamesh, the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel. Archaeological discoveries made in Egypt populate the section of the exhibit that documents the book of Exodus, followed by replicas of artifacts from Israel, Assyria, Babylon, Persia and Greece in biblical times.

Today the WCTU is still active, with chapters in every state. In the 21st century, the organization holds programs at schools and churches to educate children and adults alike on the hazards of tobacco, alcohol and the use of illegal drugs. It is known as the oldest non-sectarian woman’s

organization in continuous existence in the world. Rita Wert is the current president of the Pennsylvania chapter, and the local Lancaster County chapter is presided over by D. Fox of New Holland.

For more information on the organization, visit www.wctu.org.

LSO Masterworks Concert Planned

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will present its third Masterworks concert, “Invocation,” featuring guest artist Colin Davin playing the guitar. Performances will take place on Friday, Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2

and 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster.

Tickets range in price and may be purchased in advance by calling the LSO box office at 717-291-6440 or by visiting www.lancastersymphony.org.

museums around the world,” Meyers said. “I’ve made replicas and brought them together so that you don’t have to travel to the other side of the globe to see everything.” Meyers occasionally acquires replicas from other people, but more often he creates the replicas himself. He stays up to date on the latest news of archeological discoveries so that he can recreate them and add them to the exhibit. Each segment of the exhibit is also accompanied by informational pieces that detail how some of the artifacts were created or used. One such educational display shows how ancient peoples tanned leather and treated papyrus to fashion into scrolls.

In addition to the artifacts and informational displays, Bible History Exhibits is peppered with photographs that Meyers took himself while traveling through the Middle East. When he is not traveling to the ancient world, Meyers resides in Philadelphia, where he moved from Ohio to attend Westminster Theological Seminary. He opened Bible History Exhibits about eight years ago and stays in Lancaster while the museum is open.

Meyers has also written several booklets on various historical topics, which he sells online and at the exhibit. Almost every item in the exhibit is for sale, and the profits from their sales help to keep the exhibit open. Bible History Exhibits operates under The Institute for Biblical and Scientific Studies, a nonprofit organization.

You’re invited to get creative during a two-day event at Donegal High School. Crop and Craft will be held from 3 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, in the high school cafeteria, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. The event is an opportunity for crafters to work on their projects in a fun, relaxing environment, said Susan Heydt, who is organizing the event. Proceeds from the Crop and Craft will benefit scholarships to attend Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competitions and Kiwanis Key Leader Camp.

“Scrapbookers, artists, fiber artists and crafters are invited to join in the fun of this time of camaraderie with others sharing similar hobbies,” stated Heydt, who is the Key Club adviser at the high school. “There is plenty of space to spread out, and we have people who use the tables to lay out big fiber pieces they’re working on.”

Participants will be able to work on anything they bring with them, and members of Donegal’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) will host breakout sessions throughout the event, featuring demonstrations on a variety of art mediums.

“The breakout sessions are a good opportunity to learn about something maybe you

haven’t seen or heard of before,” said senior Isabelle Morrison, president of the NAHS, who will run one of the sessions.

Senior Madison Arroyo, president of Donegal’s Key Club, noted that students will help participants carry in supplies and get set up. She said she was surprised at how quiet the event was last time she attended. “Everyone is so focused on their projects,” she noted. “It’s just a relaxed, welcoming environment.”

Members of FBLA are taking care of marketing the event, said freshman Abbie Waldron, club treasurer.

“We’re handling the advertising, and we made the registration form and we’re tracking registration payments,” she stated. FBLA members participate in competitions throughout the year, which will be funded using proceeds from the Crop and Craft.

Freshman Sami Ankeny will compete in financial math in an upcoming event, and freshman Molly O’Brien will participate in a hospitality management competition later this month.

Heydt got the idea for Crop and Craft after hearing about a similar event organized annually by a sorority at Millersville University. Crop and Craft events were held in 2019 and 2020, and this year will mark the event’s return after a two-year absence during the pandemic.

Pizza and salad will be served Friday night, and coffee will be available Saturday morning, along with soup and sandwiches for lunch. “The soups are awesome,” Heydt said, noting that parents make and donate them, with additional food provided by local businesses.

Registration for Crop and Craft is available at https://tinyurl.com/y43e52rr. Participants may pay at the door if room is available, but Heydt recommends preregistration. In the event of snow, the Crop and Craft will be postponed to Friday, March 3, and Saturday, March 4.
