According to Horst, the secret to successful gingerbread house making is the sticky frosting made at the preschool using a mix for powdered meringue. Pastor Earns Doctorate Through LBC

There are many quotes exhorting people to be part of something bigger than themselves. Richmond Wandera, a native of Kampala, Uganda, has lived them. On Dec. 14, 2018, Wandera graduated from Lancaster Bible College (LBC) with a Doctor of Philosophy in leadership, with the goal of taking what he has learned back to his home country to spread knowledge among pastors there.

“Uganda has 40 million people and 85,000 pastors, but 70 percent of (the pastors have) had no training,” said Wandera. “(Yet) they are forced to explain complex theology.” Wandera added that theological information is not easily available. Come over here and grab a flag,” called Matt Knouse to the fifthand sixth-grade students from John R. Bonfield Elementary School who were in attendance at the Nov. 7 groundbreaking of the Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County. Knouse has been a leader in developing the park, which, when completed, will be located at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.

On Nov. 7, Knouse joined students, staff, administration, and parents from Bonfield at the site, along with master of ceremonies Jim Sinkovitz and Veterans Honor Park chair C. David Kramer, both of whom spoke at the event.

Sinkovitz, a former Marine and a Vietnam War veteran, welcomed the gathering and opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance. “We are here today to mark a milestone in the history of the Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County,” said Sinkovitz. “What was begun by a small group of volunteers looking to fulfill a dream today takes hold as a concrete, tangible testimony to dedication, perseverance, generosity, and American grit.”

Sinkovitz lauded the dedication of the John R. Bonfield Elementary School students, saying, “These fifth- and sixth-graders have been some of our biggest supporters since they were in kindergarten, and we thank them for their loyalty and participation.” The master of ceremonies introduced others, some of whom were present, who had made the celebration possible, mentioning Wayne Siegrist, who donated the land on which the park will be built in honor of his father, Raymond Siegrist, who was a World War II veteran.

Other attendees who were recognized included Knouse, who with his family has given time, talents, and resources to the endeavor, and former United States Army officer Robert Kornman, designer of the park, construction coordinator, landscape architect, and volunteer.

Sinkovitz then introduced Kramer, the keynote speaker, who spoke of Robert Weaver, a United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam era, who had a dream of a memorial park dedicated to honor the sacrifices of Lancaster County’s military veterans. “Today, your dream takes another step toward coming true,” said Kramer, who noted that the support of Sam

The Gen. John H. Michaelis Chapter 327 of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Eagle Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The meeting will begin at noon. The speaker will be Larry Alexander, who will share the story of Merlin “Whitey” Groft, who fought in World War II.

Membership in KWVA is open to all service members who served in Korea at any time from 1945 to the present or were in uniform serving anywhere from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. A special effort is being made to recruit those who served in Korea at any time following the armistice in July 1957.

“The mission (of this park) is to recognize and pay tribute to the valor of (all) Lancaster Countians who ever wore a United States armed forces uniform and swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” said Kramer. He emphasized the commitment each veteran makes by recalling the remarks of Ephrata native William “Tom” Hobbins, a retired United States four-star general and the highest ranking officer to emerge from Lancaster County.

“When we think of honoring our veterans, we should always recall that the commitment they made requires them to sign a blank check to the American people … payable with their lives,” quoted Kramer.

Kramer noted that one intention of the park is to give the 32,000 veterans currently living in Lancaster County a place of peace, repose, and reflection, but

he added that it will also be a place to educate young people.

“The logo (of the park) is a silhouette of a child saluting the stars and the stripes,” said Kramer. “It’s an enduring graphic statement that it is the future that is the most important.”

Gesturing to the Bonfield students, Kramer said, “Today, we are surrounded by the future ... and they are invited to take part (today) to thank them for their loyalty and to mark their essential part in the ongoing saga of American freedom.”

Kramer then asked the gathering to give the children of Bonfield a hand. “I charge you now with taking a giant step in the history of the park,” he said as the students who were holding shovels moved the first pieces of earth in the creation of the new place of honor.

“The wheelchair lift was bulky and heavy, and we had to look at (removing it) from a different angle,” said Stoltzfus. “We had to think outside the box.”

LCCS head of school Peter Hansen pointed out that the tiny house project fits with the mission of the school. “This project is about more than making money,” he noted. “It’s about serving the greater good and how do we as a school help that.”

Overall learning goals for the project should reach far beyond the specifics of layout or how to remove bus seats, according to Long. “Our students can ex perience entrepreneurship by giving them experiences while teaching them principles,” said Long.

“We teach basic business principles in a way where they do the process, (because) teaching students to think and solve problems is a big part of what we do.”

The project is also designed to teach collaboration skills and business ownership functions.

“They are learning to be leaders,” said Long. “We give them the basic skills to run a business (by doing it), and they take risks, but they are using real money, so ideas must be feasible,” Long said.

LCCS is governed by a board of directors and managed by the head of school and administrative team. The school offers a Christ-centered and interdenominational curriculum for area children in prekindergarten through 12th grade.

“My job is fun,” said Nate Long, director of the academy of entrepreneurship at Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS).

“I get to think of the creative things I wanted to do in high school and hopefully make them happen.”

Fourteen LCCS high school students will get hands-on experience in a variety of areas as they work to transform a small bus Long purchased from Homestead Village into a type of tiny house. According to Long, the bus, which is 17 feet long and more than 7 feet wide, will be more like an RV when completed, but it will be fully functional with a bathroom and a kitchen, if a little smaller than the average tiny house.

Concepts that Long intends to teach as part of the project include stewardship of money, creativity of design, marketing, and empathy. He said students are considering questions like “ What does your consumer want?” and “How would you feel living in this house?” as they make decisions about design and function.

Long said that the project will be student driven. “The tiny house is a chance to experience things and get their hands dirty,” said Long, who has charged students with designing the interior starting with concepts and moving to 2-D and 3-D drawings.

“We want them to see the process from the beginning to end.

(The students) are making all the decisions.” A former LCCS student who is now an employee of a Lancaster-based producer of tiny houses located nearby is acting as a consultant on the project.

Student Sarah Bustillo has been involved in laying out the floorplan for the tiny home, learning to use a 3-D model maker and receiving a crash course in the importance of measuring. “We have learned there are multiple ways to use space,” said Bustillo, who noted that steps can also be storage units and counters can flip up to provide more living space. “You have to be creative.”

Student Caleb Heck also collaborated on the layout process.

“I thought the layout aspect would be easy, but after (a short time), I realized it is a meticulous process,” he noted.

“What drew me to the project is that we want to teach critical thinking,” explained Long. “How do we create a space that’s efficient (and functional)? Thinking through that process has been awesome.” Long described how one student imagined a coffee table that became a kitchen table and that had storage inside.

When the student brought the idea to Long, he said, “Draw it out, and we can build it.”

own story. The third of six children, Wandera shared that he and his family witnessed his father’s murder in 1990. “It changed our entire family,” said Wandera, whose family then moved to Naguru, a slum in Kampala. “It’s called a forgotten community. There is very little hope there,” said Wandera.

In 1991, hope arrived in the form of sponsorship through Compassion International. Wandera and one of his sisters were sponsored and began attending the church through which that sponsorship was extended. Four years later, Wandera came to understand the Gospel. Noting that his family came from a traditional African background, Wandera said that the story of Joseph resonated with him. Later his sister and his mother made decisions for Christ as well. Eventually his whole family became part of the fold.

Wandera finished high school in 2000, and in 2004 he graduated from Uganda Christian University with a bachelor’s degree

County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Thursday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted.

There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces.

According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Friday, Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.

This biblical solution led Wandera to found a nonprofit called Pastors Discipleship Network after completing a year at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 2008. Pastors are now being trained through LBC’s blended program, which mixes online learning with regular visits to the campus. The program was introduced at LBC in 2016 following a visit to Uganda by LBC president Dr. Peter Teague. Wandera noted that pastors carefully selected for character, practice, and giftedness have been offered the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in ministry. To date, 40 students have graduated. Twenty more are due to graduate in June.

Each pastor is charged with sharing what he or she has learned with one pastor in Africa per year for the next five years.

in accounting and began working toward his certification with a goal of training accountants to do business ethically. He began teaching accounting, but he also felt a call to become a pastor. “I was deeply moved by change that happened in our home because of the Gospel,” said Wandera.

With encouragement from his pastor, he began pastoring at the church, but one night a woman who had lost a 3-year-old child to malaria asked him a question he could not answer. Distraught, Wandera returned to working in accounting.

A discussion with Steve Wilson, a worker from Compassion International, brought him back to the ministry. He received the first Wesley K. Stafford scholarship to the Moody Bible Institute, with the goal of taking back what he learned to pastors in Africa. Wandera reached that goal only to find that many of the pastors needed leadership training as well as theological knowledge. That need led to him to LBC, where he began working toward his doctorate as a recipient of LBC’s Wesley K. Stafford Leadership Development Scholarship, established in 2013.

A local family will benefit from a fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Scratch Bakes, 3 W. Main St., Ephrata. One hundred percent of the day’s sales will be donated to Wesley “Wes” Myers, son of Tom and Samantha Kulfan Myers of Ephrata. The family will also receive all proceeds from a by-donation giveaway drawing that will be held during the fundraiser. Donations will also be accepted.

In early 2018, 1-year-old Wes was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer. Now 2 years old, Wes has had approximately 10 surgeries so far, and more are being scheduled. He is also about to welcome a new little brother into the world.

Proceeds of the fundraiser will go toward the cost of banking the new baby’s cord blood so it will be available if Wes needs it for his treatment. Children with cancerous solid tumors like neuroblastoma can receive cord blood transplants after chemotherapy or radiotherapy to accelerate healing and reduce recovery times.

Moores Memorial Library Slates Programs Airport Unveils New Sculpture The Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokom Ave. Christiana, has announced its programs for January and February. The Knitting and Crocheting Club will meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. in the library. Experts and beginners are welcome to attend.

Lego Club will meet on Thursdays, Jan. 10 and 24, at 6 p.m. Participants of all levels are welcome to come create with the library’s Legos.

Story Time will be held on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. in the children’s area. Stories, songs, and crafts will featured that are appropriate for preschool-age children accompanied by a caregiver. This activity is free, and no registration is required.

The library will host a special STEM program on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m. for elementaryage children. More information will be provided in early January.

Math Club will be held on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays at 4 p.m. beginning in February.

There are two different age clubs - one for students in kindergarten

through grade two and another for children in grades three to five. Participation is free; however, preregistration is required, since the library must have a minimum number of students at each level to be able to establish the club. Sign-up is currently taking place at the library.

Family Game Night will take place on Friday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m. The event is free, and registration is not required. Attendees may bring a favorite board game to play or participate in one of the library’s games. Light refreshments will be provided by the library’s Friends group.

The Lancaster Airport Authority dedicated and unveiled the sculpture “ We Care to Dream” at a ceremony on Nov. 14 at the Lancaster Airport. Created by Patrick Mack of Indianapolis and located in front of the Lancaster Airport Terminal, the permanently mounted polished stainless steel sculpture represents humanity’s love of flight.

During a private ceremony, the sculpture was dedicated in memory of Marvin E. Miller Jr., past Pennsylvania legislator,

Lancaster businessman, and member of the Authority’s board of directors. For nearly 23 years, Miller gave his time and talents to the airport’s growth and success.

He served on the Authority board, most notably as chairman, from 1998 until his death in 2016.

Along with Miller’s widow, judge Margaret C. Miller, family, friends and business associates attended the ceremony.

The Lancaster Airport Authority recently unveiled its new sculpture, “We Care to Dream.” Patrick Mack created the piece.

- 1 cup Golden Barrel Organic Cane Sugar - 1 cup Golden Barrel Brown Sugar - 1 cup Golden Coconut Oil, solid state - 1 1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract - 3 eggs - 2 1/2 cups cake flour

- 1 cup baking cocoa, sifted - 2 tsp. baking soda - 1/2 tsp. salt - 1/2 cup instant chocolate pudding mix (small box) - 2 1/4 cups buttermilk - 1 cup chocolate chips or chunks

Ganache - 8 oz. Dark chocolate, chopped - 1 cup heavy whipping cream (or chocolate chips) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a bundt pan with coconut oil and dust with cocoa powder. In a large bowl, mix together flour, cocoa, soda, salt, and pudding mix. Set aside. Beat together coconut oil and sugars until light and creamed. Beat in eggs and vanilla for 2 minutes. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk to wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour batter evenly into greased pan and spread evenly. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30 min.

Then lower temperature to 325 and continue to bake for an additional 30-40 minutes until toothpick inserted in middle comes out mostly clean. Cool for 5 minutes in pan before inverting onto wire rack to cool completely. Ganache: Chop up chocolate bar into chunks (or use chocolate chips) and set in a bowl.

Pour heavy whipping cream into a saucepan and heat on medium-high until heated but not boiling. Pour cream on top of chocolate and let set for 10 minutes. Resist the urge to stir at this point! After 10 minutes, whisk together the chocolate and cream until smooth and shiny. Let set for a couple minutes before pouring on top of cooled cake. (Make sure your cake is on a cake plate.) Let ganache cool until slightly hardened. Store in airtight container.

Hertzog noted that attendees should expect an eclectic mix of themes presented predominantly in modern dance, with some dances based in ballet, along with several duets. “Some (numbers) are more abstract and some have a blatant storyline,” Hertzog said.

The show will include more than 12 pieces, several based on the theme of moving from darkness to light and focusing on letting God lead the battles. “There will also be lighthearted pieces that have a joyful spirit (danced) to a worship song or an instrumental,” Hertzog said.

In addition to Christian themes, the show will include a duet that is about the struggles of marriage - specifically issues of stagnation and rejuvenation.

One rags-to-riches tale will be danced to the song “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman, and another dance will feature the popular Lauren Daigle song “You Say.” Savannah Huyard, artistic director of Cavod Dance Company II, has choreographed a piece called “Skeletons.” “‘Skeletons’ is a straight-up testimonial piece,” said Huyard. “It hits the nail on the head about how we take our secrets and feel like we have to shove them in a closet.”

Huyard then described how secrets are destroyed when they are voluntarily revealed. “The Lord says when we expose those secrets to the light and ask for forgiveness … and let Him work through us, those secrets explode in the light and the darkness can no longer hold us.”

Huyard described two other pieces, including “Hold On,” based on the concept of being faithful when circumstances seem unbelievable, and “Creation to Salvation.” “‘Creation to Salvation, is a beautiful story that takes us from the perfect world God created to a time of darkness, (but it) ends with Christ at the cross. He covers up the most sinful thing we have done and covers every living thing,” she said.

The Cavod Dance Company is composed of 15- to 20-year-old dancers, and Cavod Dance Company II is composed of dancers ages 12 to 15. In addition to dance, Hertzog and Huyard work to disciple the dancers.

“We have a mentorship program where (each) older girl (mentors) a younger girl in the other company (by) meeting and praying with her,” said Hertzog. The companies also perform regular outreach shows at area venues including Water Street Mission, The Bridge in Ephrata, In the Light Ministries, and Lancaster County Christian School. The groups have also performed at Barnstormers games and a regional amusement park.

Show To Feature “Book Of Matthew Project” The Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, will host a show titled “The Book of Matthew Project” by artist Daehong Kim for First Friday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m.

“The Book of Matthew Project” was conceived in June 2010 as a personal pledge to support a church ministry that was sending a group of young adults on a short-term service mission to South Korea. Kim committed to handwriting each verse from the Gospel of Matthew on individual cards, accounting for 1,071 verses. Kim also invited people to participate by contributing verses, and these verses and others were collected and applied on five canvases. The purpose of writing each verse was to facilitate a

The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable will host author and historian Janet Croon on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Croon will present “The War Outside My Window.”

The program will explore the book “The War Outside My Window: The Civil War Diary of LeRoy Wiley Gresham, 1860 to 1865.” LeRoy Gresham, from Macon, Ga., began writing a diary at age 12 while bedridden from an injury. He continued keeping the diary until the war ended and he died at the age of 17.

Kim is an American artist who was born in South Korea in the late 1970s. He took up studio art and music performance as a child. He considers art integral to the narrative of his personal pilgrimage in human portrait and faith.

Attendees of the First Friday event will be able to meet the artist, read some of the handwritten verses, and enjoy snacks.

Croon has recently retired from teaching advanced high school history in Fairfax County, Va. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science, modern European history, and Russian language and area studies from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Dayton.

LIFT Nutrition and Strength Training Classes for men and women will be offered by Penn State Extension in Lancaster County. Penn State Extension, in collaboration with Virginia Tech, will offer an eight-week strength training and nutrition class to help men and women age 40 and older improve their strength, flexibility, bone density, and stamina.

Harvest Sharing News Announced Thanks to record-breaking donations of deer meat from Pennsylvania hunters, generous donors, and more, the state’s charitable food system will provide more than half a million servings of ground venison through food banks, soup kitchens, and pantries throughout the commonwealth.

Now in its 27th season, the nonprofit charity Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) helps to coordinate the donation, processing, and distribution of venison to Pennsylvanians facing food insecurity. HSH has donated 1,356,281 pounds of venison to the hungry since 1991.

The Department of Agriculture partners with HSH to cover some of the costs of processing the meat, with the department increasing its share of financial support over the last two years due to increased deer donations.

With continued support, Pennsylvania hunters can donate their deer cost-free.

During the 2017-18 season, a total donation was made of 3,337 deer, yielding 130,930 pounds of deer meat and providing 667,400 meals for individuals and families in need. Due to this increase in donations, additional meat processors are being recruited throughout the year to better help turn hunters’ donations into high-value protein for hungry families. This year, the department will help to cover the service cost of more than 110 processors throughout the commonwealth.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania and serves as the ongoing host of HSH’s annual kickoff event.

The food bank counts on HSH each year to provide thousands of pounds of lean venison from deer harvested by central Pennsylvania hunters.

HSH also works in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Deer Management Assistance Program to receive donations to help conserve a healthy, natural habitat that supports wildlife diversity and healthy deer populations throughout the state.

HSH also partners with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which donates $20,000 annually and uses deer management practices that directly provide venison to the program.

Hunters interested in participating can take their deer to one of the participating meat processors throughout the state and donate any amount of their venison to the program. Even when it is cold or overcast, UV rays that cause skin aging and skin cancer are reaching the skin. In the right winter weather conditions, people can sustain sun damage just as easily as during the summer.

UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, are the strongest in the summer. However, UVB rays can burn and damage skin year-round, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice. Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, so the rays hit twice, further increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging.

UVA rays remain constant throughout the year and can penetrate through clouds and fog.

UVA rays can also penetrate glass, so it is still possible to damage skin while spending a bright winter day indoors.

The first line of defense against this sun damage is clothing. Covering up is easier in the winter, because it is cold, but the face, head, and neck tend to remain exposed year-round, and this is where most skin cancers occur. People should not forget their UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hat before heading out. Sunglasses protect the eyes while also fighting snow glare, and a hat keeps the head warm while keeping UV rays from damaging the scalp.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher should be applied daily to all exposed skin. People should make sure to cover oftenmissed spots like the tops of their ears, around the eyes, and near the hairline. Individuals should consider choosing a moisturizing sunscreen with ingredients like lanolin or glycerin to combat dry winter skin.

The winners of the 2018 Code4PA codeathon have created a mobile app that provides users with personalized recommendations for opioid addiction treatment. The winners were selected from 28 projects developed by teams of participants from across the state. More than 350 technology professionals, addiction and recovery experts, college students, state officials and others took part in this year’s Code4PA, which kicked off on Sept. 20 in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The teams returned on Oct. 20 to demonstrate their projects for judging.

The app, called Care4PA, suggests services and treatment providers based on information provided by the user such as his or her location and insurance provider. Users can also view other patients’ ratings of providers. Over time, the app will use this feedback to refine and improve recommendations. The app also provides state officials

Bookmobile from pg 1 The Library System of Lancaster County has announced the expansion of its Bookmobile service. During the past year, the Bookmobile significantly increased its service by adding an additional eight Head Start stops and four stops to other communities: Country Meadows Assisted Living Facility, Woodcrest Villa Retirement Village, Manor Heights (Mountville), and Pleasant Valley Amish Store (Kirkwood). Last year, the Bookmobile had 51 stops on its monthly schedule. Since the arrival of the new Bookmobile in the spring, the schedule now includes 63 stops to Head Start locations, preschools and senior communities. That is a 23.5 percent increase over 2017, and the library system continues to receive requests for service from Lancaster County communities.

The library systems credits the expansion of the Bookmobile service not only to the new Bookmobile, but also to a new partnership between the library system and The Shalom Project.

The partnership resulted in the placement of Kaitlin Abrahams as a new intern for the Bookmobile. Abrahams grew up in Kansas and recently graduated from EMU with a degree in English and writing studies.

The Shalom Project is a oneyear voluntary service experience for recent college graduates. Participants live together in a house

in Lancaster city; serve the community through full-time, professional internships; and participate in seminars focused on Christian spiritual formation and personal growth.
