OnDec. 5, Betsy Shenk heard news of a tragedy at Red Creek Wildlife Center: an electrical fire had destroyed Red Creek’s primary facility and everything in it. Although the wildlife rescue is located in Schuylkill Haven, Red Creek has strong ties to Lancaster County, and the news shook many in the wildlife rehabilitation community.
Shenk, founder and executive director of Acorn Acres Wildlife
Rehabilitation in Millersville, posted a request for assistance to Facebook and Instagram, and the response was resounding. Donations began pouring in, and Acorn Acres’ inbox was overflowing with people offering their help and asking what more could be done. “The amount of support was absolutely overwhelming and mind-boggling,” said Shenk. “It speaks to how much the public values wildlife rehabs.” Shenk received so many messages that she needed to enlist additional help to manage her inboxes, and within a matter of days,
the community donated over $15,000. Shenk said that there were even donations sent from supporters in Europe. “Wildlife rehab isn’t a single person or facility; it’s an entire network, and we banded together to help one of our sisters,” said Shenk.
Although Red Creek is a part of a vast network of wildlife centers, which rushed to its aid, the organization’s relationship with Lancaster County is unique. Over 12% of Red Creek’s animal rescues originate in Lancaster, and it has been serving the county for over 30 years. Red
Creek’s founder, Peggy Hentz, even played a significant role in the founding of Acorn Acres.
Shenk first met Hentz in 2014 at a class that Hentz was teaching in Pittsburgh. The class focused on how to safely catch and transport wild animals that are in need of assistance, as a large piece of Red Creek’s mission is to educate both the public and those in the process of becoming wildlife rehabilitators. “I remember that when I met her, I shook her hand and said, ‘I have been waiting so long to meet you,’” said Shenk.

Throughout the month of December, students from Penn Manor School District participated in a variety of holiday concerts both at their own schools and within the community. Live performances were one of many events that were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and although many returned under certain restrictions in 2021, this was the first season that the concerts could return in full force. Certain music directors employed new methods to share students’ musical talents during the pandemic. Among these staff members was Penn Manor High School (PMHS)

When Shenk began the process of creating Acorn Acres years later, Red Creek sponsored her and Hentz served as her mentor. By Pennsylvania state law, to start a wildlife rehabilitation center, one must acquire a letter from the municipality in which the facility will be located and have both a sponsoring rehab and veterinarian. After sponsoring Acorn Acres, Hentz helped to guide Shenk in the new organization’s early stages and answered any questions she had.
“She was the first person I would call if I needed help,” said Shenk. “She’s the reason Acorn Acres exists.”
Red Creek is currently rebuilding its clinic and hopes to open its doors again on Jan. 1. The wildlife center had been planning the construction of a new facility prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and wishes to resume the project this coming spring. At this time, Red Creek is asking for monetary donations only. To make a donation, visit https://red creekwildlifecenter.com/.
choir director Lauren Ciemiewicz. For the large ensemble, Ciemiewicz recorded each of the voice parts individually and used a software program to overlay the parts and virtually simulate a concert. For the small ensemble, Ciemiewicz tasked each student with recording his or her parts on an iPhone using a click track and then assembled the recordings for the virtual performance.
While she is grateful for the technology that allowed the students to perform during the pandemic, she is grateful for the full return
to live performances. “It feels great to be back,” said Ciemiewicz. “The students in general seem more grateful for the opportunity to perform and go out into the community again.” Live performances were held last year but suffered from setbacks such as missing students who were in quarantine. Also, the performance groups were not able to visit the local retirement communities and organizations that normally host the performers. This year, on Dec. 10, the Manor Singers were excited to perform at the Conestoga Historical Soci-
ety’s Candlelight Christmas event once again. “You could see the excitement in the students knowing that we can share the music,” said Ciemiewicz.
Many of the methods used by teachers to sustain music programs during the pandemic are still being used. In PMHS’ new building, each concert is still recorded and archived for future reference. “It’s a strange feeling to go back to what we knew as normal,” said Andrew Johnson, PMHS music department coordinator. Johnson and many of the department staff have also continued to use certain safety measures borne during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as managing the moisture from brass
instruments. In the past, students would dispose of the moisture accumulating on their instruments with little restriction; brass instrumentalists now consciously manage and dispose of the moisture in trash.
Despite the challenges of the past two years and safety measures that are still used, the school’s attention is primarily drawn to the music and performances themselves. “The focus is back to the content of the music, not just the extra safeguards,” said Johnson. “Rather than choosing a theme for the instrumental programs, we kept the focus on finding the best material so that students could sound and perform at their best.”

James St., Lancaster. Hadar will also participate in Shabbat services on Friday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m., also in the sanctuary.

LMS Sells Former New Danville Campus
Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) sold its former New Danville Campus property located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, to Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning on Oct. 21. LMS unified all students from the former Locust Grove and New Danville campuses on the Lincoln Highway campus for the 2022-23 school year, starting in August.
The mission of LMS is to provide a Christ-centered, high quality education for prekindergarten through 12th-grade students in a diverse community that nurtures them to become creative and innovative learners who are prepared for college, a career, and life and are empowered to change the world through Christ-like love, peacemaking, and service.
LMS’ unification has allowed the school to update and expand its facilities and to hone in on key curriculum priorities of faith formation, fine arts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math), outdoor learning, and
world languages. It has also allowed for collaborative learning opportunities across grade levels with the goal of fully utilizing and effectively stewarding the resources of its 95-acre Lincoln Highway campus.
The upgrades to the campus are intended to help the school serve the needs of students at every age and provide new spaces such as a new elementary MakerSpace and art room, new high school science labs, new media centers, and classroom upgrades, which are designed to support new curriculum initiatives to help students grow in their understanding of the world and discover their purpose in it.
The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are subsidiaries of Milton Hershey School. The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are for children from birth to age 5 and provide weekday care and education for early childhood learning. Their program covers all the costs for those who qualify.
Angel Tree Program Benefits The Salvation Army
Faulkner Chevrolet completed its Angel Tree Program for the Salvation Army again this holiday season. The employees and their families donated new and unwrapped jackets, mittens, scarves, toys and other necessities requested from children in and around Lancaster County.
The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program provides food
for the holidays and requested toys. Each child chosen must register and be accepted, and his or her wish list is shared with a randomly chosen donor. The Salvation Army is committed to serving the whole person - mind, body and spirit - with integrity and respect. The agency strives to empower people to change their cir-
cumstances and overcome the challenges that stand in their way. Services offered may include emergency assistance, crisis intervention, self-sufficiency programs, counseling, budgeting and referral services.

Riding On For Veterans
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If you look out your window on New Year’s Day, you may see a crowd of motorcycles zooming down the road. They are part of an annual ride to benefit veterans.
“We take the same route every year, and people know about it, so they come out and
kids come out holding flags and cheering us on,” said Tyler Stumpf, one of the event organizers. “It’s become a New Year’s tradition.”
The is the 14th year for the event, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 1. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the ride will leave from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion
Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. The ladies auxiliary will serve breakfast items before the ride.
The 25-mile ride will follow a route along the Susquehanna River and conclude at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., where a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served following
tion Army’s location at 131 S. Queen St., Lancaster.
The public is invited to donate to the Salvation Army through its Red Kettle Campaign, which will run through the holiday season at many locations.

the ride. An auction will be held there as well, featuring items donated by local businesses. T-shirts and patches will also be for sale. Proceeds from the event will benefit veterans in the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Since its inception, the ride has raised more than $240,000, Stumpf said, adding, “We will hit the quarter-million mark this year.”
Each year, the event includes fun traditions such as Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. This year’s honoree is Brian Landvader.
Over the years, the ride has grown significantly, Stumpf said. “We started with 11 motorcycles, and now we’re averaging about 400 motorcycles,” he commented. “When all the bikes are lined up on Main Street in Mount Joy, it’s really something to see.”
Billy Hecht, who is also helping to organize the ride, said the event has continued to be

The congregation of the Willow Street Church (WSC) welcomed the Rev. Joel B. Hummel as its designated senior pastor on Nov. 13. Joel succeeds pastor Ron Bohannon, who resigned in October after serving 17 years at the church.
Joel was called to serve with Deb Landis, associate pastor at WSC. As designated pastor, Joel will take a leadership role at the church, while a search is conducted for a settled pastor. Joel accompanied by Nicole, his wife, at the welcoming reception.
Joel received a call to ministry in his teenage years. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from high school and served for eight years and again later after 9/11. He was ordained in the United
Church of Christ in 1994, and most recently, he served as the director of pastoral care at a continuing care retirement community in Hanover. Joel has also been a volunteer firefighter, an EMT, a fire company chaplain, a police officer, and a security officer.
Joel earned a doctorate from Lancaster Theological Seminary, a Juris Doctor from Dickinson School of Law, and a Master of Divinity from Yale University.
WSC is located at 2723 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street. The weekly worship service takes place on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Services can also be accessed online. For further information, visit www.wsucc.com or contact the church office at 717-464-3462.
