The 4-H cycle renews in January, and 4-H clubs hold reorganizational meetings that month to plan activities for the year. The Rough Riders will meet on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. at the senior center, and the Hooves & Hearts will meet on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. at Stehman Memorial UMC. Parents are

Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC), 40 W. Main St., Strasburg, will hold a Blue Christmas service on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. The same service will be held on Friday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. at Bethesda UMC, 1086 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. This special time will be offered to remind attendees of those persons for whom the Christmas season may not be a time of joy and celebration due to personal loss and struggles. The services aim to provide supportive worship for those dealing with these concerns, so they may find peace and comfort during the holiday season.

Youths ages 5 to 18 who are interested in horses and ponies are welcome to join one of two Southern End-based 4-H horse clubs. The Rough Riders 4-H Horse and Pony Club meets at the Next Gen Senior Center, 184 S. Lime St., Quarryville, at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month. The Hooves & Hearts 4-H Horse Club meets at the same time at Stehman Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC), 485 Indian Run Road, Millersville. Both the Rough Riders and Hooves & Hearts clubs are open to youths ages 8 to 18. The Cloverbud Horse Program is open to children ages 5 to 7. “You usually want to choose a club
expected to stay for the meetings. “We rely very strongly on parent participation, particularly with young children,” Fairchild said. Horse ownership is not required for club membership. The 4-H program offers both practical and theoretical education, and club members without horses may partner with those who do have mounts for shows and other hands-on activities. Sweet Pea Project recently launched the “this is ten” book drive, which will continue through Tuesday, Dec. 31. The collection is being held in honor of the 10th birthday of Max, son of Sweet Pea Project board secretary Nicole Vasquez. Vasquez said that, when Max was stillborn a decade ago, she received a book that had been donated in memory of Madeline, daughter of Sweet Pea Project founder and president Stephanie Cole. This gift connected her to the Sweet Pea Project and began her service to the organization. Since Vasquez was connected to the organization through the gift of a book, organizers thought it would be fitting to honor Max’s 10th birthday and a decade of his mother’s service to the community through the Sweet Pea Project by collecting books. with new club members. One youngster did so well with her teen leader that she advanced to state-level competition. “We interact like a family. You look up to your teen leader, the president, (and) the vice president, and when you have gone through the program, you teach others,” Fairchild said. “You get this neat mentor/mentee thing going on.” 4-H offers opportunities to compete in competitive trail riding, driving, and Western, English, and saddle seat styles of riding. The Rough Riders have two fun shows a year, which are held at the Columbia Riding Club, 1800 Franklin St., Columbia. Lancaster County 4-H also hosts a local competitive show, and club members can advance to district and state levels. “I love 4-H because we try to expose the kids to all the disciplines,” Fairchild said. “If we can expose them to all the opportunities out there, then they can create connections to be involved in whatever becomes their lifetime interest in riding.” 4-H members have gone on to compete in high school rodeo,
Pony Club, racing, and polo, Fairchild said, adding, “They are the foundation of who are running the horse programs in the area.” There is a cost to join a 4-H club. Rough Riders holds a sub sale in February to raise money for activities and for charity. Club members vote on recipients for the charitable donations, which usually are related to horses. The other portion of the proceeds goes to the senior center, the Columbia Riding Club, the Maryland-based stable where the summer campout is held, and the costs of hosting a show, including renting the grounds and buying trophies and ribbons. Additionally, the club offers pony rides at the annual Rubber Ducky Race and Festival and splits the proceeds with the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. The 33rd annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner distribution will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The distribution will begin at 8 a.m. The project will distribute more than an estimated 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families throughout Lancaster County. No prescreening is required. In addition to the distribution at the stadium, LCPN will partner with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for more than two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers. All are welcome to lend a hand. Each hospital will receive five copies of each book for a total of 10 books, so a donation of $100 will provide an entire box of books for one hospital. A bookplate will be placed inside the front cover of each book, and the name of the child whose loved ones contributed will be handwritten on the bookplate, dedicating the donation in his or her memory. Anyone who donates a complete box may designate the hospital to which the box will be donated. Sweet Pea Project encourages parents to consider using the book drive as a way to involve their family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers in their child’s remembrance over the holidays. A list of all the hospitals that receive the books will be made available so that supporters are able to see just how far their generosity - and their child’s legacy have reached. Donations in increments of $10 may be made with a credit card or bank account via PayPal at www.paypal.com. Faulkner Chevrolet joined local Lancaster County police departments and first responders in November to support the 2019 Beards for Brothers campaign. The campaign was started by Officer Bill Watt of West Hempfield Township. Each year, officers select a first responder or organization from the community who is currently battling cancer or provides care to those battling cancer. This year, the Beards for Brothers campaign raised money for Police Sgt. Harold E. Gainer Jr., who retired after 25 years of service in East Hempfield Township. He also served two years in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with distinction fighting in the Vietnam War. In January of this year, he was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Also supported through the fundraiser was Andrew Etman, an EMT volunteer and firefighter, was diagnosed over the summer with stage 4 diffused large B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The Columbia-Lancaster Christmas Ladies will host the annual free Christmas lunch for seniors age 55 and older on Christmas Day, Wednesday, Dec. 25, at the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 10th and Manor streets, Columbia. More than 125 senior citizens from throughout Lancaster and York counties attended last year’s Christmas meal. For Helen Bechtold and Sis Luzader, known to attendees as the Columbia-Lancaster Christmas Ladies, the vision for the meal is ultimately to ensure that no one spends Christmas alone. Doors will open at 10 a.m. for a time of socializing and sharing coffee, tea, punch, and snacks. Lunch will be served at noon and will include ham and turkey, filling, mashed potatoes, vegetables, rolls, and dessert. Individuals age 55 and older who do not have other plans for
Christmas Day are invited to attend. Organizers emphasize that the event is for seniors only. Reservations are required, and interested individuals may sign up by calling Bechtold at 717397-2267 or Luzader at 717-6840128 by Friday, Dec. 20. Anyone interested in making a financial contribution toward the meal or donating small gifts that a senior citizen would appreciate may also call to learn how to do so. The tradition was started by the late Bob Stampf, who was a founder of the MTWA, when the group members sought to share woodcarving with the community in an impactful way. HCC was suggested, as an MTWA member had a relative receiving care. MTWA member Ruth Stetter related that the ornaments went over so well that first year that

filled the air as members of the Manheim Township Woodcarvers Association (MTWA) and the Lancaster County WoodCarvers (LCWC) placed ornaments on a small artificial evergreen tree on Dec. 4. Each of the more than 170 ornaments had been painstakingly carved and decorated by members of the two groups. “Some of them are so beautifully ornate. They really bring the spirit of Christmas,” commented Lauren Musser, corporate and community relationship manager for Hospice & Community Care (HCC). The ornaments are shaped like mittens, Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas, evergreen trees, angels, birds, and snowmen, and there is even a Noah’s ark with a pair of delicately carved giraffes. The tree is located in the chaplains’ office of the Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, near Mount Joy. The facility has 24 beds, where seriously ill individuals’ pain and symptoms are
WellSpan Philhaven has hired a psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of addiction. Mitchell Crawford, D.O., is the new director of addiction services for WellSpan Philhaven. He provides support and creates clinical services for the treatment of addiction throughout the entire WellSpan Health system in Adams, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. Crawford has received specialized training in the treatment of substance abuse disorders, such as those involving opioids, alcohol and nicotine. He is an advocate of medication-assisted treatment, which uses medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapy, for patients with substance use disorders. A native of Lancaster County, Crawford earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and did a psychiatric residency at Harvard Medical School/VA Boston Healthcare. when she went to pick up the empty tree, Musser joked that Stetter may have it only if she brought it back with more ornaments the following December. “It’s a good thing (to do),” Stetter said. “It makes you feel good to do this for folks.” MTWA member Mark Arbogast coordinates the ornament project and is also a member of the LCWC. When the MTWA, which has only about 10 members, could no longer create the necessary number of ornaments, Arbogast invited the 80-member LCWC to join the effort. “The Lancaster County WoodCarvers was very happy to jump in and help,” Arbogast said. Approximately half of the LCWC’s members contributed pieces, and both styles and intricacy vary. “The details of these pieces astound me every year,” Musser said. “This is art, and they bring their gift right here to hospice.” Both carving groups have a mission to preserve the art of woodcarving. The MTWA runs a six-week class for beginners starting in April every year. Newcomers are also welcome to attend meetings, which are held

Scott was honored at the Toledo Bowsher High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony as a part of the 1965 Bowsher wrestling team. continued to earn 40 national medals in wrestling type sports in the over 20-year-old age category. Shaun W. Scott of Millersville was honored at the recent Toledo Bowsher High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony as a part of the 1965 Bowsher wrestling team. Scott was a co-captain of the team and a repeat First Team AllCity wrestler. Six former team members attended the ceremony. At the 1965 Ohio high school state wrestling championship, the Bowsher wrestling team tied for fourth among all Ohio schools for qualifying the most wrestlers for the state championship tournament with a total of four. The team tied for third place after the second round. At the time, there was only one size classification for Ohio high schools and 372 schools participated in the one-class system. Prior to the 1965 state tournament, the Bowsher team had placed in its district state qualifying tournament in eighth, 10th, 14th, and 19th places. Scott continued his wrestling career as the first Northwestern Ohio wrestler to get a wrestling scholarship to a top-three wrestling school Oklahoma. Following college, Scott
