Contactless Amish Farmland Tour Offered The Amish Experience, a guided bus tour company in Lancaster County founded in 1959, has announced that in order to serve those visitors who are concerned about getting on a bus with strangers, it has developed a completely contactless option for the traditional 90-minute guided Amish farmland tour. A small FM radio transmitter was installed in the Amish Experience bus, so that everything the guide says into his or her hands-free microphone in the bus is broadcast over a vacant frequency on the FM dial, thus allowing customer to drive in the safety and comfort of their own vehicles, following the bus down the scenic back roads, with the live, in-themoment narration of the guide coming through their car’s speakers. The only thing a customer must have in their vehicle to enjoy the contactless option is an FM radio. There is a fee per car. People may make a reservation online and check in on their phone

social distancing requirements, and capacity restrictions have reduced the ability of community services like the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center, which serves refugee and immigrant families. COVID-19 realities also altered the way the K-Team program ran this summer. K-Teams are weeklong, summer discipleship and crosscultural experiences offered in small urban centers in the U.S., specifically for youth groups. Due to the pandemic, teams were not able to stay in the same residence, and outreach opportunities were either canceled or limited in scope. During the week of Aug. 3 to 7, Mountville Mennonite Church’s K-Team creatively partnered with Grape Leaf Empowerment Center to serve the refugee community of Lancaster. Because of limited access to resources and services, the Mountville youth group helped the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center move supplies out of James Street Mennonite Church and into a pop-up center at Trinity Lutheran Church on South Duke Street. Buckwalter Eastern Mennonite Mis- noted that the next goal was to fundraise in preparation sions Kingdom Team for buying a camper/RV that director Krista Martin would be used to bring serhelps to sort supplies as part of an outreach activ- vices directly to communiity with Mountville Men- ties where client families nonite Church. reside.
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many people to embrace new forms of resilience and exercise their creativity. Two Lancaster leaders, Patience Buckwalter and Krista Martin, are among those who have adapted to the changes caused by the pandemic. Buckwalter is executive director of the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center, and Martin is Eastern Mennonite Missions’ (EMM) Kingdom Team (K-Team) director. Stay-at-home orders,
Patience Buckwalter (third from right), executive director of the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center, works with youths from Mountville Mennonite Church to load a moving truck. Participants included (from left) Ron Shenk, Joey Eckman, Brian Merrell, Lisa Merrell, Mattie Hartzler, and Anna Musser.
Martin said she hopes to see K-Team participants connect on a relational level with refugee families, even though that can be difficult during a pandemic. The Grape Leaf Empowerment Center provides a safe gathering place for local refugee and immigrant community members where they can receive support,
connect with one another, and access resources in Lancaster city. It was founded by Buckwalter in 2018 to bridge the gap between refugee and immigrant families by providing a hub of services, including culturally sensitive case management and resources for as long as they are needed.

The Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium hosted a Home Run Derby for first responders and members of the military, including veterans, on Oct. 24. The event, coordinated by the Barnstormers, raised over $3,000 for local first responder organizations. Contestants were given 15 swings each with a wooden bat. Points on each fair ball were
awarded based on the distance the ball was in the air, ranging from one point for clearing the innermost arc to four for scaling the home run fences. At the end of the preliminary rounds, the top three in each category - fire, police, EMT, and military - took part in a twominute speed round. A winner in each of the four groups was determined, and donations to
that person’s selected charity were made, based on order of finishing. The event had 51 participants. The winners, along with their affiliated categories, their chosen nonprofit, and the amount of money won for those causes are Michael Thomas representing the Firefighter Division with 60 points, New Danville Fire Company, $1,500, first
place; Ben Bradley representing the Police Division with 51 points, the Lancaster City Police K9 Unit, $1,000, second place; Jody Roof representing the Military Division with 45 points, Wellsville Fire Company, $500, third place; and James Rohrer representing the EMS Division with 29 points, Lancaster EMS, $250, fourth place.

T-Mobile donated $10,000 to the Lancaster Recreation Commission to help provide joy during the holiday season. Lancaster Rec used the sponsorship to hold its annual Candy Cane Hunt event on Dec. 4 at Brandon Park. The donation was also used to purchase more than 800 toys for children in the Lancaster community. The toys were distributed at the holiday gift giveaway at the Lancaster Recreation Center from Dec. 1 to 5. Members of the community had an opportunity to register for the gift giveaway in November. To learn more about the gift giveaway or Candy Cane Hunt, readers may contact Heather Dighe at 717-392-211, ext. 154, or hdighe@lancasterrec.org.

She is being recognized for her work with under-represented residents in Lancaster city and for establishing Lancaster Tree Tenders. Thomas has led Arbor Day activities as well as street tree and riparian buffer planting events involving members of the community. In 2019, Thomas organized an Earth Day tree planting at a lowincome housing development. For Thomas, the Dock award will provide trees to continue her work with the
residents of Lancaster and to increase the tree canopy there. Mira Lloyd Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conservation. Dock was also part of the movement led by Harrisburg businessman J. Horace McFarland to preserve Niagara Falls. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation launched the Keystone partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Lancaster Theological Seminary’s 11th president, the Rev. Dr. Carol E. Lytch, retired at the end of June after nine years leading the 195-year-old graduate school of theology. The seminary has launched a national search to find its next president. The board of trustees is looking for an experienced, missionoriented leader in higher education who is visionary in outlook, collaborative in approach and an advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion. AGB Search, a firm based in Washington, D.C., and specializing in executive searches for higher education, is consulting in the search. A 10-member Presidential Search Committee, representing trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni and community leaders, will review applications and identify finalists for the board of trustees to consider. The Rev. Dr. Monica Dawkins-Smith, a trustee and Lancaster Theological Seminary alumna, is chair of the search committee. The committee is accepting applications through Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021. The board of trustees plans to make a selection in time for the new president to start in July 2021. The incoming president will work closely with interim president Dr. David Rowe during a brief period of transition. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recently honored Sen. Scott Martin as Legislator of the Year for his work to ensure young people facing long-term illness and injury can continue their studies. Martin was the author of Act 18 of 2019, which created a new grant program to make telepresence technology available to more students so they can continue to participate in classroom activities through the use of mobile robotic devices that resemble an electronic tablet mounted on a Segway unit. The program ensures that young people who face challenging health circumstances do not miss out on valuable instructional time with teachers and learning opportunities with their classmates. HIMSS is a global advocacy group that supports the transformation of the health care landscape through the power of information and technology.
