Youth Band’s Concert To Support Recovery Program BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
he Young Testament Band will perform a benefit concert for Potter’s House of Ruth at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13. The event will be held at ACTS Covenant Fellowship, 1927 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster. Socially distanced seating will be available, and attendees may wear masks. Admission will be free of charge, but donations will be accepted for Potter’s House of Ruth, an addiction recovery and discipleship ministry. Potter’s House of Ruth residents will offer handmade crafts for sale, and event organizer Vicki von Schaaf will sell her art and greeting cards. There will also be baked goods for purchase. “My heart is going out to all the people who are addicted and really struggling during the pandemic. There’s such a need for places like the Potter’s House of Ruth, especially for women. There are more recovery houses for men than for women,” Vicki commented. “The thing I love about the Potter’s House of Ruth is that it’s a long-term program. They need something long-term to stabilize.” The four-phase residential program can last for a year, during which women recover from their

On New Year’s Day, the streets of Lancaster County will be filled with motorcyclists, all riding to benefit veterans. The 12th annual charity ride will kick off at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. addictions, receive counseling, become involved with church communities, and develop life and employment skills. There is a monthly cost to participate, but no one is excluded due to financial need. Vicki estimated that the concert will last about an hour. The Young Testament Band will perform a variety of Christmas, worship, and praise music, including several songs by the late Keith Green. The Young Testament Band has been together for two years, and its members range in age from 12 to 15. Riley Hornberger plays bass and Vicki’s granddaughters, Hosanna and Sophia Schoonover, perform the vocals. Vicki’s husband, Albie, who has been mentoring the group, will provide support on guitar during the concert. The band has lost several members as a result of the shutdown and is looking for a guitarist and a drummer. Journey To Bethlehem from pg 1 attendees will be formed into socially distanced groups that will be guided through the scenes by costumed actors who will interact with various characters at each vignette. She added that she expects it will take about 20 minutes to go through the live Nativity. Candy canes and cookies will be available after the walk-through. A brass ensemble will perform and a small choral group will sing. At least 50 people are involved in the production. Goats, sheep, and a miniature horse are slated to be included in some scenes. Rineer noted that support for the event extends beyond CLPC. Union Presbyterian Church provided costumes, Boy Scout Troop 91 will help to decorate for the event, and Robert Fulton Fire Company will assist with parking. Admission to Journey to Bethlehem will be free of charge, but attendees are asked to bring donations for the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. Requested items include

Josephian and Hartman collaborated on the script, which features six scenes: a visit with the prophet Isaiah, a Jewish marketplace, King Herod’s throne room, a shepherds’ field, an innkeeper’s house, and the manger. “The goal of the Life committee is that people will experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the story so the story leaps from the pages of Scripture and into their hearts,” Hartman said. “We also want to make it fun. Proceeds from the event benefit veterans who use services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “Last year, we raised $33,000,” said Tyler Stumpf, ride organizer. “Over the years, we have raised $193,000.” Money is raised through the entry fee for the ride as well as sales of T-shirts and patches. Typically, the event would also include a meal after the ride and a silent auction, but that has changed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, organizers are looking for donations of items for veterans or financial contributions. “The event will be held completely outside this year,” Stumpf noted. “We’ll have a trailer in the parking lot to collect things for veterans like toiletries, stamps and prepaid phone cards.” The 25-mile ride follows a route along the Susquehanna River and concludes at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Proceeds from the ride are wholly used for veteran services, with no money going to administrative costs or overhead, said Nicole Tipping, who will be participating in the event. “Since donations will not be as big this year without the auction, we are really encouraging people to bring items for the vets or to make a financial donation,” she stated. Local businesses are also encouraged to donate to the event. The ride, which is open to the public, is not just for motorcyclists. Drivers of other vehicles are invited, Stumpf said, adding, “It’s for anyone who would like to honor veterans.” It was important to organizers that the ride happened

With the fall sports season in the books, two Penn Manor athletes rose to the PIAA championships. Both Graham Thomas and Catherine Rabatin claimed District Championships in their respective sport and went on to grab state bronze medals.
Thomas, a senior, was a member of the cross country team. The Comets finished fourth in Section One this year with a 6-2 record. They were led by Thomas, a First Team League all-star and League Runner of the Year. The L-L League champ (16:07) ran undefeated through the regular season and went on to clock the fastest District Three Class 3A time (15:41). His bronze medal finish at states was Penn Manor’s best ever finish, topping the fourth place effort by Dave Henry in 1981. “Graham is our second district champion,” pointed out co-head coach Tom Ecker. “The last was Dave Henry in 1980. “Graham is planning on attending Temple where he will compete on the cross country team.” Rabatin was just as impressive on the tennis court. The sophomore was undefeated in singles play (140) and recorded a 9-2 doubles record, playing mostly with Abby Stoner. “Catherine lost just one set the entire season,” said first year head coach Amanda Pryzbylkowski. “She is the L-L League Champ, a twotime District 3 Champ and was
voted as a L-L League all-star, a Section One all-star and Player of the Year in addition to earning the PIAA Class 3A bronze medal.” CROSS COUNTRY Also turning in a standout season was senior Lou Lindsley. The Second Team all-star finished 21st in the League Championship and was 43rd (17:06) in the district meet. “This was his best season,” said Ecker. Top runner for the girls’ squad (1-7) was Abby Ames. The sophomore finished 14th (20:57) in the League Meet and followed up with a 61st place (20:56) effort in districts. “Abby finished the season strong with her first win in the last regular meet of the season against Lebanon and CV,” recalled Ecker. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team this season settled for a tie for second place in Section One with a 7-5 record. Following undefeated Hempfield, Warwick and the Comets nudged out Cedar Crest (6-6) for the second spot. The two squads also split regular season action. “I thought we had a good shot at making league and district playoffs, and, in a normal year, our second place in Section One and 13th place power ranking in District III would have put us in both playoffs,” said
head coach Tim Joyce, “but a narrowed playoff field, due to Covid, excluded us. “So, between Covid and the construction at the high school, we faced some adversity but when we got on the court, I could tell we were going to be successful,” he continued. “Jordan Schucker and Lexington Sangrey, our captains, have been varsity starters since they were sophomores and have tremendous leadership skills. It’s no wonder they were both named Section One first team all-stars. We were the only team other than Hempfield to have more than one player named to the first team,” Joyce explained. Schucker, named to the first team for the second year, was also an Academic all-star with the highest GPA on the PM team, and was recognized as a PIAA District III second team all-star. “This is the most recognition in a long time that a single one of our players has received,” stated Joyce. The Comets earned four shutouts this year and were led by Schucker with a team high 37 aces and 215 assists and 136 digs. Sangrey was tops with 130 kills and served up 27 aces, and sophomore hitter Cassidy McCollum, in her varsity debut, recorded 29 aces and 113 kills, was a second team all-star. Highlighting the defensive effort was Madison Trout with nine blocks and Sophia Millhouse with 182 digs. “We also had the chance to do some community service at St. Anne’s Retirement Community,” Joyce pointed out. “We started the summer receiving American Volleyball Coaches Association Academic Award honors for the third straight year, and we expect to each the award again after this season with

FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team, for the 14th time, successfully defended its Section One crown, sprinting to a 91 league record and pushing out to a 13-3 overall mark. The Comets, behind a team-high 18 goals and 6 assists from Jasmine Miller, then turned in an impressive performance in the L-L League playoffs, dominating Lancaster Mennonite 5-1 before blanking defending L-L champ Lampeter-Strasburg 5-0. Manor’s run, however, ended with a 3-0 District Three first round loss to Wilson. Their only league loss was to Warwick. Head coach Matt Soto recorded his 700th career win (only the 7th coach in the history of high school field hockey to achieve this feat) with Manor’s 2-0 shutout over Manheim Township on October 20. He was also named Section One Coach of the Year. Maeve Montgomery’s 7 goals and 5 assists followed Miller while both Tristan Groff (6a) and Isabelle Thatcher (1a) also scored six goals each. Adding to Manor’s balanced attack was Malayna Kahl (5g, 5a), Riley Robinson (4g, 6a) and Grace Gerner and Lexi Verden both with 2 goals and 1 assist while Halie Rineer dished out 5 assists. The Comets racked up a L-L League-high 55 goals on the year and gave up a slim eight while securing an impressive eight shutouts, including a pair of 9-0 thrashings of Cedar Crest. Only Section Three runner-up Elco gave up fewer goals with four. Cecily Charles was credited with those shutouts, collecting 48 saves on the year. For their efforts, Miller, Montgomery, Charles, Caity McGough and Riley Robinson were all Section One, First Team all-stars and L-L League All League all-stars. Annie Bibus received Second Team recognition. FOOTBALL While the Comets 2-6 overall record showed a tough year, it wasn’t without promise. Manor won two of their last three games, a 21-20 thriller over Solanco and a 42-0 season-ending shutout over McCaskey. Prior to Solanco, the Comets played both Cedar Crest (30-21) and second place Manheim Township (14-6) to within a touchdown. Isaiah Stoltzfus led the rushing attack with five touchdowns and 517 yards while Isaac Hostetter was tops with four TD receptions and 540 yards. He and Hunter Hoffman both hauled in 31 catches (second highest in the league) from QB Luke Braas who passed for eight TD’s and 1257 yards. “We had many accomplishments this season but I feel our greatest accomplishment this fall was that all of our teams, staff, and members of the Penn Manor community were able to take and implement the new protocols in our athletic health and safety plan,” said Athletic Director Steve Kramer. “This was a fall season unlike any we have seen before, but our athletic teams made the adjustments needed to allow them to safely compete and complete the 2020 season.”

16th annual “A Season for Wishes” presentation will be a pre-recorded film shown at Penn Cinema on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 9:45 a.m. While social distancing guidelines made it impossible to rehearse or perform certain dance numbers, Lisa adjusted choreography for some dances. Styles for the 15 numbers will range from tap, jazz, and ballet to modern and hiphop. Many of the Rockettestyle kicklines were not possible, but Lisa noted that on one number she spaced the dancers apart with their hands on their hips so they could still do the kicks. Familiar dance numbers that will be featured this year include “Santa Baby”;
“Do You Hear What I Hear?”; “The Little Drummer Boy”; “Hot Chocolate”; “Where Are You, Christmas?”; “We Need a Little Christmas”; “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”; “Arabian” from “The Nutcracker”; “Hip Hop Holidays”; and “Jingle Bell Rock.” In addition, the film will feature a video from Make-AWish about a Wish Child in Philadelphia who received his wish, and there will be clips of local Wish Family members who spoke at past presentations. Lisa has also promised a number of surprises throughout the event. “The emphasis is on following guidelines and being safe,” said Lisa. “It may look a little different this year, but the
love behind it is the same. It’s going to be amazing.” Past shows have raised more than $30,000, but this year, Lisa will be happy if the event raises enough to grant one child’s wish. “I told the (dance students) they should feel so good about any amount that comes in,” said Lisa.
