Last summer, Penn Manor’s Mary Wurzbach taught Ugandan students about self-sustainability through agriculture.
When Penn Manor High School wrapped up its final day of classes for the 202223 school year, its students and staff members left the campus to kick off their summer plans. Many kids and their teachers looked forward to vacations, barbecues, or simply escaping their classrooms for a couple months. Mary Wurzbach, however, had something else in mind; the agricultural
education teacher traveled a bit farther than the beach, spending four weeks teaching another class in Uganda. Wurzbach and nine other American teachers were selected for Teach Ag Uganda. The goal of the project, which is sponsored by the Fulbright-Hays Program, is to assist with agricultural education and training in countries around the globe. Wurzbach first heard about Teach Ag Uganda from one of her undergraduate professors when she was a student at Penn State University. Since this specific trip

As winter rolls around each year, food banks and community outreach programs across the country are often met with a stark increase in the demand for their services. While the holiday season is a time of celebration for many, the cold weather and additional expenses that accompany this time of year can prove challenging for others. To combat this seasonal challenge, Water Street Mission launched its annual food drive on Nov. 1, and
the organization is once again calling on Lancaster County residents to band together in support of their neighbors. “We already started to see an increase in demand for our programs in September, and we’re expecting another influx as the months get colder,” said Matt Clement, director of marketing for Water Street Mission. “We didn’t quite meet our goal last year, but we’re thankful that we got close. It really helped us make it through the winter.” The goal of this year’s drive is

sandwiches at Binns Park downtown. “I never knew how many folks were there who were in need,” Costarella said. “I saw the need, enjoyed the people, and I just wanted to make sure they knew someone out there loved them.” In April, Costarella partnered with Lancaster County Food Hub to create a second program, Hands Up Partners. Through the collaboration, the nonprofit organization raises money that Costarella uses to provide people without housing with a weekly stipend; in exchange, the recipients join him in cleaning projects at local parks and community areas. “The program has helped a lot of participants find jobs by acting as a stepping stone,” said Costarella. Valentine and Costarella met several years ago through their shared passion for community service. The program on Dec. 8 will be Circle Legacy Center’s first official collaboration with Costarella, but he has worked with Valentine on various projects in the past to advocate for Lancaster County’s homeless population. Valentine recently contacted the city council to raise awareness for issues such as a lack of public restrooms and emergency shelters. City officials have since placed a portable bathroom in the parking lot of an emergency shelter on North Prince Street, which is maintained by participants in the Hands Up Partners program. “We’re all very concerned about our homeless neighbors living on the streets, especially with winter coming,” said Valentine, who will

Schreiber will recount this history from the first arrival of missionaries in 1658 to the construction of the modern-day Friends Meeting house in 1954. He will discuss the Quakers’ involvement in the Revolutionary War, the slave trade, the abolition movement and Civil War, Prohibition, turn-of-the-century county government, and World Wars I and II. Questions to be answered include “How much did William Penn pay for Lancaster County?” and “For whom was John Wright spying at

was focused on poultry, a field that Wurzbach has a wealth of experience in, she decided to apply. On July 6, Wurzbach flew to Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. From there, the cohort of educators traveled to Sipi Falls and spent three weeks in Lira, where Wurzbach taught at St. Katherine Secondary School. During her time at the school, Wurzbach educated students on entrepreneurship and self-sustainability by showing them how to raise layer hens and to grow corn. “Everyone is involved in agriculture there. Every kid in my class grew up on a farm,”
Wurzbach said. “Teaching in the United States, I like to think I’m trying to educate consumers and not necessarily farmers. But (in Uganda), everyone needs agriculture to survive and to become self-sufficient.” Wurzbach has traveled abroad in the past, but this was the first time she had taken a trip of this nature and length. After she returned to the United States on Aug. 4, she began to think of a way to weave her experience from the program into her curriculum for the upcoming school year. Since the school year began, Wurzbach has shared
