Take A (Local) Journey To Bethlehem BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
n a year with loads of canceled events, one organization is introducing something new. Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, will host Journey to Bethlehem, a walk-through live Nativity, on Sunday, Dec. 13, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. “In a year that has been obviously challenging on so many levels, and so many church ministries have been postponed or canceled all together, we didn’t want to give the appearance that the holidays were being shelved. We thought this would be a new way to offer Christmas to our church and the community,” pastor John Hartman explained. The project was organized by CLPC Life, the congregation’s fellowship committee, which includes Amy Rineer, Barbara Josephian, and Heather Musser. Josephian and Hartman collaborated on the script, which features six scenes: a visit with the prophet Isaiah, a Jewish marketplace, King Herod’s

throne room, a shepherds’ field, an innkeeper’s house, and the manger. “The goal of the Life committee is that people will experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the story so the story leaps from the pages of Scripture and into their hearts,” Hartman said. “We also want to make it fun. We’re taking some creative license.” Josephian noted that attendees will be formed into socially distanced groups that will be guided through the scenes by costumed actors who will interact with various characters at each vignette. She added that she expects it will take about 20 minutes to go through the live Nativity. Candy canes and cookies will be available after the walk-through. A brass ensemble will perform and a small choral group will sing. At least 50 people are involved in the production. Goats, sheep, and a miniature horse are slated to be included in some scenes. Rineer noted that support for the event extends beyond CLPC. Union Presbyterian Church provided

After the tumultuous year that 2020 has been, one common hope is that 2021 will be better. But even if the new year isn’t fabulous, at least you can mark off the days in style with a calendar from the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS). our years after her son, Lucas, was born prematurely, Carmina Rodriguez of Lancaster still remembers the encouragement offered by a family that was in the Women & Babies Hospital (WBH) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with her. Lucas was due on Feb. 23, 2017, but while attending a church service in October 2016, Carmina unexpectedly began experiencing contractions and was taken to the hospital

in an ambulance. She was admitted and spent a month in the hospital on bedrest before she gave birth via Caesarean section on Nov. 23, 2016. Carmina’s husband, Ryan, was able to hold Lucas, who weighed only 2 pounds 4 ounces and was 13.5 inches long, and show him to Carmina. “I have no memory of seeing him at all,” Carmina said. “He was rushed right to the NICU. I was not allowed to hold him for a week.” Lucas’ growth was on track for a child at 23 weeks gestation, but he also had jaundice, so in addition to

scenery that have then been compiled into a yearly calendar along with tidbits of information about each image. The calendars are then sold as a fundraiser for the organization, which maintains an extensive archive and the Robert Fulton Birthplace. Susquehanna River territory features prominently in the 2021 calendar. SLCHS president Stan White explained that when he and co-author Mike Roth visited the Conestoga Area Historical Society on a mission for a new book, they were shown crates of photographs donated by the Holtwood Hydroelectric Power Plant, which no longer wanted to care for the collection from the Pennsylvania Water & Power Company. At Roth and White’s request, the SLCHS permitted the photographs to be scanned into its database. “While I had some help, I think I have personally scanned and labeled 16,500 pictures, some of which are absolutely wonderful, but many of which will only be of interest to an engineer,” White commented. “I now know an awful lot about the Holtwood Dam and power plants of an earlier time.” From those thousands of photographs, White selected a few to join the possibilities that artists would tackle. “I was a little surprised our calendar committee liked the Holtwood pictures as much as I did. I think

With the fall sports season in the books, two Penn Manor athletes rose to the PIAA championships. Both Graham Thomas and Catherine Rabatin claimed District Championships in their respective sport and went on to grab state bronze medals. Thomas, a senior, was a member of the cross country team. The Comets finished fourth in Section One this year with a 6-2 record. They were led by Thomas, a First Team League all-star and League Runner of the Year. The L-L League champ (16:07) ran undefeated through the regular season and went on to clock the fastest District Three Class 3A time (15:41). His bronze medal finish at states was Penn Manor’s best ever finish, topping the fourth place effort by Dave Henry in 1981. “Graham is our second district champion,” pointed out co-head coach Tom Ecker. “The last was Dave Henry in 1980. “Graham is planning on attending Temple where he will compete on the cross country team.” Rabatin was just as impressive on the tennis court. The sophomore was undefeated in singles play (14-0) and recorded a 9-2 doubles record, playing mostly with Abby Stoner. “Catherine lost just one set the entire season,” said first year head coach Amanda Pryzbylkowski. “She is the L-L League Champ, a two-time District 3 Champ and was voted as a L-L League all-star, a Section One all-star and Player

BOYS’ SOCCER With 22 goals scored this season, the boys’ soccer team wrapped up the 2020 year with an overall record of 4-8 and finished in fourth place in Section One with a 3-7 mark. They suffered just two shutouts to two of the three teams that finished ahead of them, second place CV and third place Hempfield. They also earned a pair of shutout wins, dominating Solanco 5-0 and picking up a season-

Head coach Matt Soto recorded his 700th career win (only the 7th coach in the history of high school field hockey to achieve this feat) with Manor’s 2-0 shutout over Manheim Township on October 20. He was also named Section One Coach of the Year. Maeve Montgomery’s 7 goals and 5 assists followed Miller while both Tristan Groff (6a) and Isabelle Thatcher (1a) also scored six goals each. Adding to Manor’s balanced attack was Malayna Kahl (5g, 5a), Riley Robinson (4g, 6a) and Grace Gerner and Lexi Verden both with 2 goals and 1 assist while Halie Rineer dished out 5 assists. The Comets racked up a L-L Leaguehigh 55 goals on the year and gave up a slim eight while securing an impressive eight shutouts, including a pair of 9-0 thrashings of Cedar Crest. Only Section Three runner-up Elco gave up fewer goals with four. Cecily Charles was credited with those shutouts, collecting 48 saves on the year. For their efforts, Miller, Montgomery, Charles, Caity McGough and Riley Robinson were all Section One, First Team allstars and L-L League All League all-stars. Annie Bibus received Second Team recognition.

The girls’ soccer team mirrored the boys’ season, finishing in fourth place in Section One with a 3-5-2 record. They were 5-5-2 overall having won four onegoal games on the year. The lady Comets settled for a 0-0 tie against third place CV and posted a 1-1 season-ending tie against Cedar Crest. Carolyn Hinkle led the scoring with four goals and two assists with Jordan Arms also notching four goals. In a balanced offensive effort, Anouk Landgraff finished with three goals and three assists, Lily Sugra added two goals and three assists and Maddie Kahler chipped in with a pair of goals. The Comets, behind a team-high 18 goals and 6 assists from Jasmine Miller, then turned in an impressive performance in the L-L League playoffs, dominating Lancaster Mennonite 5-1 before blanking defending L-L champ Lampeter-Strasburg 5-0. Manor’s run, however, ended with a 3-0 District Three first round loss to Wilson. Their only league loss was to Warwick.

being on oxygen and enteral nutrition, Lucas had to stay under a special light. Carmina, who had quit her job providing in-home care for elderly individuals and veterans, spent her days sitting by the incubator. Lucas might have been the one living in the isolette, but Carmina also felt isolated. On the day Lucas underwent a blood transfusion, Carmina toughed it out by his side. But when the procedure concluded and she went to the cafeteria, she broke down. The family ahead of her in the checkout line did what they could to console Carmina, as they also had a child in the NICU. “I get it. We’re here,” the other parents told Carmi-
na while paying for her coffee. That family took their child home while Lucas lingered. He was finally released in late January 2017. In the four years since, Carmina has encountered that family several times, and she is happy to exchange updates on their children, both of whom are thriving. Carmina also wants to make sure other NICU parents know they are not alone. Following the example of church friends who donated care packages after their own NICU experience two years ago, Carmina crowdsourced support for kits that she, Ryan, and Lucas presented at the WBH NICU on Lucas’ fourth birthday. The kits contained Stroopies, cloth masks,
handknit newborn hats, scrunchies, keychains, lip gloss, hand cream, facial lotion, makeup wipes, tissues, gift cards for Hot Z Pizza, and packs of encouraging Scripture verses. Carmina hopes to make this a yearly tradition. “I want to give back in one way or another. (The NICU) was such a big impact on our lives and on Lucas’,” she said. “When I hear of other moms going through it, I get it. I was

Safe Communities will host a virtual Zoom interview with pastor Mark Harris on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m. Harris will discuss his experiences of abuse and trafficking as well as his journey to healing. He will be interviewed by Linda Crockett, director of Safe Communities, an organization based in Lancaster dedicated to supporting adult survivors of child sexual abuse, as well as ending child sexual abuse. The event is part of the new Survivor Voices series launched by Safe Communities featuring the voices of survivors as part of its effort to educate the public about how this issue impacts individuals and communities.
Harris recently graduated from Lancaster Theological Seminary and is working toward being ordained in the United Church of Christ. He leads a small church as an authorized minister. Harris is writing a book about his experiences, and he plans to work with survivors of trauma in the future. Pastors, teachers, law enforcement personnel, parents and people who work with children and teenagers are encouraged to attend. Interested persons must register at www.safecommunities pa.org. Registrants will receive a Zoom link to the event. A recording will be available after the event for a limited
