said Grace Julian, cofounder of The Edible Classroom, an organization that seeks to bring the world of gardening into classrooms across the county.

the Earth.”

The Edible Classroom has a threepronged mission: to cultivate academic achievement, healthy lifestyles and environmental stewardship, which it accomplishes in a variety of ways with the garden as its backdrop.

The organization partners with schools to provide lessons during the school day, resources for teachers and students and after-school programs, and currently it works with 15 schools in Lancaster County.

In the spring, summer, and fall seasons, The Edible Classroom offers schools 40-minute curriculum-based lessons, where students are able to get their hands on the process of growing and harvesting produce directly. If a school has an existing garden, students can immediately begin planting, tending, and harvesting crops, with the goal of enjoying the fruits of their labor and learning along the way.

“We come into schools as a partner organization to do whatever they determine,” said Julian. “This can include many different things depending on the school.”

Beginning in March, students start preparing the soil and planting the crops, which they maintain through the end of the school year in May. By the beginning of summer, most crops are ready for students to harvest and eat. Over the summer season, the organization offers programs for students to continue their work as gardeners.

In the fall, The Edible Classroom begins a 10-week period alongside the start of the school year, where students can enjoy the many types of produce that thrive until the beginning of November. During the winter months, the organization takes a break from its regular education programs to develop

new curricula, which change yearly. The basic principles of each curriculum remain the same, but each one has a different focus and plant material.

Beth Horst and Julian planted the seeds for The Edible Classroom several years ago, after they created gardens at their kids’ respective elementary schools. “We saw the benefit in the community of having an on-site field trip that the whole school could visit. As parent volunteers, we realized we didn’t want to keep it at only two schools,” said Julian. The Edible Classroom bloomed in 2017, when it was incorporated as a nonprofit organization.

As Horst and Julian developed the nonprofit and partnered with more schools, they realized the benefit of not only serving elementary students during the school day but offering opportunities for students of all ages across different school districts. Volunteer opportunities, learning experiences for agriculture and science students and projects such as constructing garden beds and facilities are some of the ways students can become involved with The Edible Classroom.

“Comfort

a concert of Advent and Christmas classics for organ and brass, will be presented on Friday, Dec. 2, at 8 p.m. at First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

Organist Larry Hershey will be at the console of the 1958 analog Allen organ, with Kristen Albert playing French horn and Doug Albert on the trumpet. The concert will begin with Hershey playing “March on Handel’s ‘Lift Up Your Heads’” by Alexandre Guilmant and Denis Bedard’s “Variations on ‘In Dulci Jubilo.’” The Alberts

will join Hershey for the Latin antiphon “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria.” The program will conclude with the French Carol “Gloria in Excelsis Deo,” arranged for piccolo, trumpet, and organ by Maurice Andre and Jane Parker Smith.

This series of free 30-minute concerts is a gift to the community from First Reformed Church, a center-city congregation of the United Church of Christ. The concerts are held each First Friday. All are welcome.

For more information, contact the church office at 717-397-5149.

Vespers Service Planned At Boehm’s Chapel

The Boehm’s Chapel Society will hold a vespers service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, in the landmark chapel at 13 W. Boehms Road. This will be the first vespers service in three years due to the pandemic. The program will be “Lessons and Carols” with the reading of Scripture and the

singing of seasonal hymns.

Constructed in 1791, Boehm’s Chapel is known as the first church built for Methodist worship in Lancaster County and the fourth-oldest Methodist house of worship in the country.

Santa Breakfast, Cookie Sale Set

Willow Street UCC Preschool, 2723 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street, will host a Santa breakfast on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 to 11 a.m. Children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa, create a holiday craft, and drop off a letter, which will be answered by Santa.

In addition, homemade Christmas cookies will be packaged and sold by the dozen. Attendees are asked to enter the building through the back door.

The cost of breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, eggs, and juice. For details, call 717-464-3462.

recycled materials and items that would otherwise end up in a landfill, such as aluminum cans, credit cards and Styrofoam. “I wanted to do something different,” Antonelli said. “My daughter is a strong proponent for recycling and environmental awareness; we came up with the idea together.” Antonelli has a degree in studio art from West Chester University and has worked as a graphic designer since graduating. For more information Antonelli’s work, visit www.desertdreams designstudio.com.

The Lancaster Public Library will also sell books at the fair, and the church’s Knights of Columbus will sell breakfast and lunch from the parish kitchen. “It’s a nice way to spread Christmas cheer,” said Jackie Roberts of the women’s club. “(The fair) gets you in the holiday spirit, and it’s a great time to buy unique Christmas gifts.”

The craft fair is organized by the St. Phillip’s Women’s Auxiliary group, which has been coordinating the annual event for 27 years. “We started (the craft fair) to fundraise for our group and allow us to make donations to the church and different local charities,” said Anne Marie Dunn, a member of the women’s group. The group itself will operate two stands; one will sell handcrafted items made by group members, and the other will sell baked goods such as cookies and brownies.

Over the years, the women’s group at St. Phillip’s has assisted with several projects within the church, such as purchasing a new refrigerator for the kitchen and funding remodeling in the building. The group also supports the community in different ways by buying flowers and gifts for residents of local nursing homes around the holidays and making meals for the homeless twice a year at St. Mary’s Church in Lancaster city. After cooking the meals, members will bring them to St. Mary’s and distribute them alongside multiple other churches in the county.

“Our goal is to provide fellowship to women of the parish and financially support the church through its projects and community outreach,” said Roberts.

Christmas Concert, Carol Sing Slated

The Mountville Welfare Association will sponsor a community Christmas Concert and Carol Sing at the Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville, on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2:30 p.m.

The Bainbridge Band will play Christmas arrangements as well as accompany the Christmas carol sing.

The concert is free and open to the public.

livelier colors.

Balancing the familiar with the contemporary is a tightrope that Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, walks each year as Christmas approaches. “Old harmonization worked in a different time, but in this age when things are fast moving, people want to hear recognizable tunes in new suits of clothes,” said Laudermilch, who dresses “stable and recognizable” holiday musical fare in brighter and

This year, the 11th annual New Holland Band Holiday Pops concert will be held on Friday, Dec. 9, in the Palm Court of the Double-Tree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. The event is known for featuring a meal surrounded by the sights and sounds of the season. “We want to give family and friends a chance to converse around the table at this cordial time of year,” noted Laudermilch.

As it has a few times before, the event will kick off with trumpets from the balcony announcing the start of John Wasson’s “Festival Fanfare for Christmas.” “If I don’t have (the trumpets), people ask where (they are),” explained Laudermilch, who said this will be the fourth time the trumpets lead the event. “It’s really a great opening,” he added.

The opening will be followed by lighter music, including pieces such as “March of the Toys” from “Babes in Toyland,” “The Holly and the Ivy,” and possibly the well-known Carpenters classic “Merry Christmas, Darling.” “It’s such a pretty tune, and everyone knows it,” said Laudermilch.

For the first time, the Lancaster Bible College Chorale, under the direction of Robert Bigley, will join the band for a few numbers. The chorale will sing two songs accompanied by the band and a third song will be performed a capella.

Additional Christmas favorites will include music from the movie “Miracle on 34th Street,” “The

Bells of Christmas,” Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” and “A Winter’s Night,” based on the quintessential carol “Silent Night,” in a new setting.

The event includes dinner for individuals and tables of eight and 10. Readers who would like to purchase tickets may do so at www.newhollandband.org or by calling 717-355-5096.

Presentation To Focus On Local Architect

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a slideshow, titled “Urban - Lost & Found,” during its 9 a.m. meeting on Saturday, Dec. 10, in Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The presenter will be Gregory J. Scott, a well-known historian of Lancaster architects, who will explore the work and life of architect C. Emlen Urban, a Lancaster native and the city’s most prolific architect from the 1890s to the 1920s. Scott reported that 12 years ago there were 96 commissions attributed to

Urban, but recent research has increased that number to well over 441 commissions representing 45 building types in 21 architectural styles. Notable and never-beforeseen commissions that have been lost or unaccounted for since Urban’s passing will be revealed in the presentation, including the Summer Theater at Rocky Springs Amusement Park, the Captain Peoples’ Skating Rink, the Contagious Hospital, and the 1909 Lancaster County Fair grandstand. A questionand-answer session will conclude the program.

Scott, who has lectured widely on

innovation and design, is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a partner emeritus at RLPS Architects, an architectural columnist for a local newspaper, a recent architectural correspondent for WGAL-TV, and a twotime recipient of the Journalist and Educator Award presented by the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. An Eagle Scout and a graduate of Penn State University, he and his spouse, Terri, reside in Lancaster and Northeast Harbor, Maine.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more information, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before 5 p.m. or at pge8507@aol.com

Mychal’s Message, a nonprofit organization, will hold its ninth annual “Wish” event to raise funds to provide Christmas dinner and gifts for hundreds of Lancaster County children and their families.

“Wish” is a two-hour, full-length, original Christmas musical, which will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 4, and Monday, Dec. 5, at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster. Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the show will start at 7 p.m.

Working in partnership with the Lancaster Families in Transition Office, local families are selected to receive a full-course Christmas dinner and gifts for their children. This year, 34 families were selected with a total of 94 children to benefit from “Wish.” Each of those children was asked to list a few gifts he or she would like to receive on Christmas.

Shannon Lapp, who founded Mychal’s Message at the age of 11 in 2002, purchases the gifts, which are then wrapped by cast members and delivered to the families along with the meal. This year’s deliveries will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17, at McCaskey High School, Lancaster.

Funds to support the project are raised primarily through ticket sales for “Wish,” which has taken place at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre every year since 2014, with nearly every show selling out. Alvina Kline, owner of Encore Dance Center, partners with Mychal’s Message in offering rehearsal space every weekend from October through December at her studio in Lancaster.

A basket and giveaway drawing will be held this year to offset the rising costs of toys and meals, and many businesses in the community

have donated items; these donors include Speckled Hen in Strasburg, Hot Z Pizza in Landisville, Bounce Kraze and Sweet Frog in Lancaster and Giant Food Stores. The Lancaster Red Rose Doll Club donated the money to purchase the 35 Barbie dolls requested by this year’s children.

“Wish” is written, choreographed, and directed by a creative team that includes Lapp’s siblings, Christopher and Erin Mary Lynch, and a family friend, Becca Bender, along with others who have helped choreograph this year’s show - Kristen Zimmerman, a dance instructor at Encore Dance Center, and Leah Brighter, a cast member of “Wish.”

The show is performed entirely by volunteers from kindergarten students to recent college graduates.

The cast’s collective experience includes performances at American Music Theatre, Sight & Sound Theatre, the Fulton Theatre and the

Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. This year’s show includes tap-dancing elves, toys that come to life, a live Nativity and a message that exemplifies the importance of giving.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.dutchapple.com (search for “Wish”) or by calling the box office at 717-898-1900. A limited number of tickets are available for those who plan to attend the show only.

Holiday Meal Delivery Set

The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.

Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.

The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries,

Giant Foods, Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.

In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.

LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717-569-8521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

Piercing Word Sets Christmas Production

Piercing Word’s Christmas production, “The Advent of Christmas,” will tour across Lancaster County and beyond throughout the holiday season.

Inspired by the traditional themes of Advent, “The Advent of Christmas” celebrates the hope, faith, joy, peace, and love found in Christ. This production includes the traditional Christmas narrative from Luke 1 and 2 and other passages that highlight the birth of Christ and why His arrival matters. The show debuted last year.

Piercing Word performs

Scripture in dramatic and musical presentations, word-forword from the ESV Bible. The nonprofit, 501(c)(3), Christian ministry is based in Lancaster and has been performing Scripture across the country since 2007. It also offers Bible memorization resources. The mission of Piercing Word is to ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.

For performances dates and locations of “The Advent of Christmas,” visit https:// piercingword.org/events or call 888-244-3461.

Wellness Event Planned For First Responders

Responder Rehab, a charity wellness event celebrating first responders, will take place on Monday, Dec. 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Switchboard Studios and Gallery, above the Columbia Kettle Works at 40 N. Third St., Columbia. The event will be presented by Bumbling Circus Workshop.

1st Sgt. Albert Storm Jr., a retired Army combat veteran, will teach an introductory yoga class for local first responders. After a severe spinal/pelvic injury, Storm, 63, himself a volunteer firefighter with Blue Rock Fire Rescue, found his way back to health through the practice of yoga. He hopes to share the knowledge gained in his years of practice with law enforcement officers, firefighters, medics and other first responders.

Responders will also be treated to

chair massage, refreshments and other wellness opportunities. This event is offered free of charge to local first responders. Families and guests may join their responders in the pub downstairs after the class as Columbia Kettle Works will offer discounts for participants as well as drink specials benefiting the cause.

Space is limited. To register, email Storm at bumblingcircusworkshop @gmail.com. Sponsors are sought for the event. Additionally, friends and family members may wish to sponsor a chair massage for their favorite cop, medic or firefighter.

Proceeds from the event will fund youth water safety programs, including swim lesson scholarships for kids from the river towns. This choice was prompted by Storm’s work as a lifeguard at the YMCA.

Christmas Open Barn Scheduled

Noble Hill Rescue Inc., 2002 Noble Road, Kirkwood, will hold a Christmas Open Barn on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature holidays wreaths, homemade cheesecakes, hot food and beverages, drawings for gift baskets,

and used equine equipment such as saddles, bridles, blankets, and more. Weather permitting, pony rides will be available.

The public is invited to attend. For details, call 717529-2358 or visit www.noble hillrescue.org.

A free informational meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Training Room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. All new

registrants and returning registrants who have not participated since 2020 are required to attend. The deadline to register for the program is Dec. 8.

Classes will take place at two locations. Classes will be offered from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. or 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Farm and Home Center. Classes will also be held from 10:45 a.m. to noon at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.

LIFT is designed to promote improvements in functional fitness or the ability to perform activities of daily living with ease. Participants are encouraged to work toward achieving their own goals in a group setting.

Each LIFT session will include an active warmup, eight core strength training exercises, and a cooldown. The program will also include basic nutrition information with an emphasis on increased fruit and
