Auxiliary To Host 25th Craft Show

The women’s auxiliary of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, has been offering holiday shopping opportunities since 1995. The group’s 25th annual Christmas craft show and sale will feature more than 70 vendors and will take place at the church on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Event coordinator Jean Marconi stated that inclusion in the show is restricted to noncommercial vendors, and she tries not to duplicate crafts.

For example, while there will be several jewelry vendors, the components, shapes, and designs of their creations are different. Along with jewelry, the types of items offered at the show will include stained glass, wooden ornaments, baskets from Africa,

handwoven towels, handmade soaps, alpaca items, Christmas décor, puzzle balls, rustic crafts, Old World Santas, potpourri and other floral products, doll beds and clothing, dog scarves, etched glass, pottery, quilted linens, feather trees, painted slates and glassware, hair accessories, nut butters, clay flowers, and more. The only exception to the handmade rule is made for the Lancaster Public Library, which sells new and used books in one of the church’s classrooms.

The craft show will fill seven classrooms, two hallways, two lobbies, and the gymnasium. Vendors will be set up on both the first and second floors of the church. The facility does not have an elevator, but the outside entrances to both levels are wheelchair accessible. Parking and admission will be free of charge.

Pet Pantry Plans Open House, Pictures With Santa

It has been nearly 10 years since Melody Sanders founded the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. The organization has flourished, moving from a rented storage unit to its own facility at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, and operating a mobile surgical trailer that enables veterinarians to perform neuter and spay services Donations of dry pet food will be accepted at the Dec. 7 open house at Pet Pantry of Lanin remote locations.

Dreaming Of A White Christmas

Ken and Marcia Andersen are newcomers to Pennsylvania, but it appears Marcia has been preparing for the move for most of their adult lives. Ticketholders may view Marcia’s love of antiques during the Strasburg Holiday Home Tour on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Marcia is a registered nurse, but she took 20 years off from the medical field while she raised their four children. During that time, she developed and honed an interest in antiques. The family was living in California at the time, but they eventually moved to Colorado, and then to Massachusetts. Through all of those moves, Marcia brought favorite pieces of furniture and décor with her. Many of those items now fill the Andersens’ home at 43 E. Main St., Strasburg.

Until the Andersens bought the house last year, the home had been in the same family for 100 years. In addition to a modest living room, the first floor contains a bedroom, a laundry room and bathroom, and a dining room that flows into the kitchen. The bedroom occupies the area that was once an ice cream and candy shop. Marcia noted that the house was originally a log cabin when it was built in 1770. Clapboard siding was installed in 1843. Additions were also made over the years, with several thick doorways between rooms suggesting that fact. Prior to serving

Ken and Marcia Andersen’s antiques-filled home will be open to ticketholders on Dec. 7 as part of the Strasburg Holiday Home Tour. Proceeds will benefit the Strasburg Heritage Society.

Strasburg Heritage Society, which holds the tour as a fundraiser. She noted that the proceeds will be used to continue the restoration of the 1790 Shroy House, 124 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, as well as to sustain the society’s operations. The society maintains an archive of postcards, pictures, documents, furniture, artifacts, and other items relating to Strasburg’s history, and it presents monthly lectures throughout the school year.

Nine homes and three churches are slated to be open as part of the Holiday Home Tour. The headquarters of the tour will be First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St. A holiday market will be open there

from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch foods and other refreshments may be purchased from the Girl Scouts there, and bids will be accepted in a silent auction for a six-person dinner cooked Colonial-style in an open hearth.

Tickets are required for the tour and may be purchased at First Presbyterian Church on Dec. 7. Advance tickets may be bought for a discounted price at Main Street Antiques, the Speckled Hen, Strasburg-Heisler Library, or www.strasburg heritagesociety.org. “The work other people do amazes me,” Keen commented.

Auxiliary president Ann Marie Dumm shared that the craft show and sale facilitates fellowship and camaraderie among women in the parish.

The event also provides funds for the group to distribute locally. The auxiliary purchases confirmation and First Communion gifts for parish members,

awards two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the parish each year, contributes to community meals and church building repairs, donates to the American Cancer Society, and purchases Christmas gifts for Conestoga View residents. The auxiliary has also held a baby shower for A Woman’s Concern.

Attendance at the show typically reaches 2,000 people, and the waiting list for vendors contains 235 names. Marconi begins accepting vendor applications each year in June.

“Longtime vendors get the first invitations,” Marconi said.

“We also have a waiting list for the gym.” New vendors start out in the hallways before moving into a classroom and eventually into the gymnasium as the spaces become available.

“You have to pay your dues,” said stained glass maker and auxiliary member Barbara Keen.

Marconi noted that the café area has been enlarged this year to make room for people to sit down and enjoy snacks or a meal.

as the ice cream parlor, the house was a telegraph office and, before that, a potter’s studio.

Commercial signs throughout the home advertise businesses from Pennsylvania and other parts of the country. Other signs of industry include a Stimpson scale in the dining room and a barber pole in the kitchen. Chalkboard paint on several closet doors in the bedrooms and cabinet doors in the kitchen are vestiges of the Andersens’ bed-andbreakfast in Massachusetts. They provide contrast to the white walls and ceilings that are present in nearly every room.

Among other interesting pieces, including an ancient work bench, Ken’s office contains a corner wardrobe that was made in Vermont, but the Andersens bought it in California.

Ticketholders will be able to view the first and second floors of the house, which will be decorated for Christmas. Visitors might want to count the many white Christmas stockings located throughout the home and take note of how many variations are possible when working with only one color. The stockings were an acquisition for the bed-and-breakfast.

The Andersens are excited about the Holiday Home Tour, as their bed-and-breakfast was part of a similar tour. “ We had a blast,” Marcia recalled. “When Lorna (Mentzer) came to the door, she got half a sentence out before I said yes.”

Advent Vespers Service Set At Boehm’s Chapel The annual Advent vespers service in historic Boehm’s Chapel, 13 W. Boehm’s Road, Willow Street, has been scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 1, at 3 p.m. While vespers is traditionally held between 4 and 6 p.m., the service at Boehm’s will be held at an earlier time for the comfort of attendees who prefer not to drive after dark.

The service will include the a capella singing of traditional carols and the reading of the story of Jesus Christ’s birth as related through the Holy Scripture.

Linda Krick, who is the director of music at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Holland, and cornet player Keith Wilson will provide special music.

Following the worship service, guests will be invited to enjoy refreshments on the porch of the Tying Shed located next to the chapel.

The program will be open to the public and suitable for people of all ages. A freewill offering will be accepted.

Boehm’s Chapel is a heritage landmark of the United Methodist Church. Built in 1791, it was first Methodist church in Lancaster County. It remains the oldest existing structure built for Methodist worship in Pennsylvania and is the fourth oldest in the nation.

designated a Pennsylvania h i s torical site by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1984, and a state historical marker was placed and dedicated later that year. In 1991, the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County presented a plaque and commendation to the Boehm’s Chapel Society for the exemplary reconstruction of the chapel.

which will include three original plays by local playwrights that will be written specifically for the locations in which they will be performed. Past venues have included Tellus360, St. James Cemetery, DogStar Books, Wolf Museum of Music and Art’s garden, McDonald’s, Rhyme and Reason, Zoetropolis, and various street corners and public lots.

Following the Dec. 7 walking tour, writers will be invited to submit plays written for the locations on the tour, and three will be selected for production in the May event. Writers of the selected works will be involved in the

rehearsal process with directors and actors, and the plays will be performed as part of ArtWalk, a self-guided tour of downtown Lancaster city, presented by Lancaster City Art Galleries, in early May 2020. Audiences will be guided to each Play Grounds site by a traveling musician. The event will be open to the public with admission by donation.

The Dec. 7 walking tour is free and open to interested writers. It will begin at 1 p.m. at Two Dudes Painting Company, 750 Poplar St., Lancaster.

Typically, two services are offered on Sunday mornings, with a modified service at 8:15 a.m. and a blended service at 10:30 a.m. However, only the later service is offered in December. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m. and currently serve

individuals from age 6 to 92.

During the worship service on Sunday, Dec. 1, Juniata County resident Jeremy Goodling will give a concert of Christmas and gospel music. WBUMC pastor Carlene Wolf will give a short message. A soup and sandwich meal will follow the service.

A children’s program highlighting a possible meaning of the “12 Days of Christmas” will be featured at the service on Sunday, Dec. 8. A Christmas Eve service containing music, Scripture reading, and candlelight singing will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24.

Additionally, the Mission and Nurture Committee will host a Christmas bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Eleven vendors are slated to participate, offering a mix of handcrafted and direct sales items.

The church kitchen will sell egg sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs, beef barbecue, and both cups and quarts of chicken corn soup, tomato soup, and beef vegetable soup. There will also be a baked goods table.

The proceeds from the bazaar will be used to support local and foreign missions, Wolf said. In previous years, beneficiaries have included the Columbia Ministerium, Africa Inland Mission, Love146, Global Ministries’ Family Village Farm in India, North Star Initiative, LUMINA, and

Water Street Mission.

The Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS) will once again offer evergreen arrangements suitable for holiday decorating. The handbuilt items may be preordered through Wednesday, Dec. 4, and picked up at the archives, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, during the 29th annual greens sale, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7 and 8.

Preordered items may be customized, noted greens sale committee member Peg Wurst.

Orders are being accepted for boxwood trees, wreaths in four sizes from 12 to 24 inches, candy canes, square wreaths, large and small grave blankets, and door swags. Separate prices have been set according to whether the items are decorated. Customers may specify their color preferences, choosing from gold, silver, red, blue, and lavender. Patriotic ribbons are available as well.

In addition to the preorders, SLCHS members and other volunteers will make extras of each item, which will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

“If you want matching arrangements, like to decorate windows, preorder them,

The candy cane arrangements were new last year and sold quickly, Wurst said. This year’s debut offering is the square wreaths, which are minimally decorated.

“They’re very simple, for a more modern décor,” Linda said.

White pine roping will be available to purchase by the foot or in 25-foot bundles. “We are excited to be able to offer this again after not having it for a few years,” Wurst commented.

Linda and Wurst noted that the decorating committee ran out of time to finish adorning a few wreaths and boxwoods last year, so they offered them as-is.

The items sold so well that undecorated items will be offered again this year. Preorders are recommended if shoppers want more than one or two undecorated items.

Greens arrangements that may be used for table centerpieces will be offered but are not available for preorder. “We have a lot of baskets that we fill with greens and balls and other stuff,” Linda explained.

“Last year we got a nice group of community volunteers, and that really helped us make (a lot),” Wurst said, listing 45 boxwood trees, 90 wreaths, and 80 grave blankets among the final tally. “The elves were busy all week. The community was wonderful helping us make things.

We’d appreciate their support again this year.”

Although the sale is dedicated to greenery, SLCHS 2020 calendars will be available for purchase

as will books on local history written by SLCHS members Stan White and Mike Roth. The authors will be on hand both days to sign autographs. Cash and checks will be accepted for purchases at the sale. Credit cards will not be accepted.

The greens sale is the historical society’s largest fundraiser.

Proceeds will be used to maintain the archives of local history and the Robert Fulton Birthplace located across the road, as well as the other three buildings on the property.

Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster and Lancaster Fellow Foodies will present the Giving Hope Food Tour as part of the 12th annual GTGH Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

Ticket holders will be able to taste many dishes from eight unique food businesses: Lancaster County Stroopie Company, Upohar Ethnic Cuisines, Culinary Services by Chef Oliver, Isabelle Cuisine, Grape Leaf Café, Walk-O Taco, Reunion Food Truck, and Xulbo Bridge Food Stands.

Each food tour attendee will receive a stamp card that will direct them to the participating food booths. At each stand, a volunteer or the business owner will share information about the food and food business. Participants may enjoy the food tour at their own pace while completing holiday shopping at the fair.

community members to tour the building, see the “state of the heart” surgical suite, meet staff members and volunteers, and interact with adoptable dogs and cats.

“We want people to come out and be educated on what we do here and how we meet the needs of the community,” Sanders said.

Guests are invited to bring dry pet food with them to the open house. W hile both dog food and cat food are needed, the Pet Pantry is currently experiencing a shortage of cat food.

About 3,000 pounds of cat food is distributed each month, Sanders said, although she added that she typically underestimates how much food is given to households that would otherwise not be able to afford to keep their pets.

The Pet Pantry is currently supporting 325 households, with distribution locations in Gap and Lancaster city, as well as at its headquarters. “We’re helping people become responsible owners,” Sanders commented, noting that program participants are required to have their pets spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Dogs must be licensed in accordance with state law.

Well-behaved pets may be brought to the open house, as photographs with Santa Claus will be available for a small fee.

While the contents of each bottle - typically between $11 and $12 - may not seem to go far individually, MacMullen’s legacy has made a lasting impact on Sanders and the Pet Pantry.

The Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) program has flourished, and a grant has made it possible for the mobile surgical trailer to go into the community to host TNR clinics. Sanders welcomes ongoing donations of pet food, and bags of food may be dropped off at the Pet Pantry at any time. The organization is not picky about food, as the donations are blended before being portioned in order to make it easier on animals’ digestive tracts.

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for their work performed on area construction projects during the 30th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The gala was held on Nov. 6 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim.

The top award of the evening was the Project of the Year, which was awarded to Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. and James Craft & Son Inc. for their project Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild. The project was selected due to its community impact, client satisfaction, design features, and positive notoriety.

The project was submitted by Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. in the Healthcare Over $25 Million category and by James Craft & Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category.

The project consisted of a sixstory overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s

existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges.

Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose.

James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff ’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority.

This year, the Project of the Year Award finalists also included CCS Building Group, Willow Street - Willow Valley Chapel Relocation, Lancaster (Category: Miscellaneous/ Special Projects); Keystruct

chapter with a 60th anniversary resolution.

This year’s program featured 82 entries, judged using specific criteria regarding the quality of construction and workmanship by a panel of construction design professionals.

The Excellence Award, the top honor, was given to the highest scoring project in each category, providing it earned at least 90 points. The Merit Award, second place, was given to all other projects within each category that scored 80 or more points. The Excellence Award winners at the Keystone Chapter level are now eligible to enter at the national level and compete against the best in the industry from all 69 ABC chapters nationwide. Church, Funeral Home To Host Blue Christmas Service

Art Exhibit To Feature Animal Portraits Artist Scott Higgins, who created drawings for the “We Love Our Pets” exhibit last April at Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster, will return to the gallery for a solo show in December. “Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes,” which features charcoal animal portraits, will open on Dec. 6 with a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m.

Higgins created the works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12 to 15 hours to create. The drawings look very realistic, but upon closer inspection viewers can see the artistic marks.

Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist practically his entire life. He said that he finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. Knowing the special bond people have with the pets in their lives makes him feel honored to create a piece for a client.

The service will recognize each person’s personal beliefs, acknowledge their grief, and embrace hope. Those experiencing the loss of a loved one, a relationship, or a job are invited.

Lenick, licensed funeral director at DeBord Snyder Funeral Home, shared that the holidays can feel overwhelming for those who have experienced a loss and that the service will offer a place where families may reflect and remember their loved ones in ways that are meaningful to them. The service will include songs, a message by Snyder, the lighting of candles, and a moment of silence.

Annual Advent Service Slated The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation will hold its annual Advent Service on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 3 p.m. at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville.

The service will include a mix of Scottish and American sacred music performed by the Root Blossoms, Thompson McConnell, an ensemble from Solanco High School and others. Donald Henderson will read the Gospel in Broad Scots.

For more than 10 years, First Presbyterian has invited its neighbors who celebrate all faiths and may be experiencing a time of loss or grief to gather together for a time of remembrance and healing. DeBord Snyder Funeral Home began hosting a similar service of remembrance at its facility in 2017, and the service has since outgrown its venue.

“Through The Door” Exhibit Planned “Through the Door,” an exhibit from local artist Gail Whatmore, will be on display in the North Gallery at Mulberry Art Studios during the month of December.

Whatmore, a native of Lancaster County, has always had a love for the arts, which she inherited from her father, whose intricate works still hang in her

family’s home. Following graduation, Whatmore pursued a career in business. However, while she was working with her own three children during their school years, she found herself drawn back to the arts.

The inspiration for the “Through the Door” collection is the Christmas season. Whatmore enjoyed depicting Saint Nicholas in different eras and incorporating artists of that same time period in the scene.

Students Take Part In Mentorship Program Seven female Penn Manor students have been paired with professionals to help them learn to navigate the workplace and develop skills essential to success after high school. The students are participating in Young Women Discovering Paths, an eight-month mentorship program sponsored by the Lancaster Chamber.

Participants are job shadowing female professionals from Cargas Systems, Fulton Financial, Millersville University, and other companies and organizations. The mentors

seek to help the students develop confidence and workplace skills.

Participants also are learning about career options and different styles of leadership and management.

Junior Sittal Neupane, whose mentor works in marketing for Discover Lancaster, said she hopes that the program helps her develop achievable career goals.

In addition to Sittal, Penn Manor participants are Caroline May, Emelly Batista, Katelyn DeHaven, Kaleigh Ferko, Lillian Nalevanko, and Amari Orr.
