Choo-Choo-Choo, Merry Christmas Model Train Enthusiasts Stage Holiday Display BY COURTNEY MENGEL
2021 marks the third year that Willow Street resident Al Strausner and his grandson, Matthew Palmeri, will build a temporary model railroad layout at West Willow United Methodist Church (UMC), 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street. In December 2018, more than 180 people visited. The year after, the pair saw about 300 visitors. The upcoming display will differ from years prior, but Strausner plans to incorporate several Plasticville buildings like he did before. fter last year’s hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual St. Philip’s Women’s Auxiliary Christmas craft show will return on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event will take place at St. Philip the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster. Over the 26 years that the St. Philip’s Women’s Auxiliary (SPWA) has hosted the event, attendance has continually increased and has risen above 2,000 people in a given year. Perhaps the reason so many

people attend is that the event showcases local craftspeople only. This year, more than 50 independent craftspeople will sell stained glass, jewelry, woodcrafts, candles, Christmas ornaments, candies, hand-knit and crocheted items, handmade bath bombs, pottery, wreaths, holiday centerpieces, winter décor, and more. The only noncraft vendor will be the Library System of Lancaster County, which will sell new and used books. Maureen Ehret, a member of SPWA, noted that there will be fewer vendors this year to allow for social distancing. Masks will be
recommended but not required. Attendees who would like a mask will be provided with one. In addition, food will be available for purchase at the craft show. SPWA will also sell baked goods, such as mini loaves of assorted breads and a variety of cookies and candy, as well as snack packs. “We are looking forward to meeting the crafters and those attending the fair, and seeing the creative items (the crafters) have made,” stated Ehret. Proceeds from the craft show will be used to fund college scholarships for high school seniors in the
parish, Historic St. Mary’s Church’s meals for the homeless, Christmas flowers for parish members at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, holiday gifts for residents in nursing homes, and baby shower gifts, which are donated to A Woman’s Concern. There will free parking in the church’s two lots, and a handicapped-accessible entrance is available at both levels. For more information, call 717-872-2166. Food Box Delivery Planned In Columbia additional grocery staples. Each box contains a turkey, bread, milk, canned vegetables, cereals, and more. The method of packing the food boxes will be determined closer to the event to adhere to current COVID guidelines. Organizers will need many drivers to deliver the boxes on Dec. 19. Volunteer drivers should arrive at 11 a.m. at the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., Columbia, where they will be directed to line up for the
touchless delivery system. Toys will no longer be delivered with the food boxes. Organizers encourage families to sign up for Toys for Toys or contact Hands Across the Street for toys. Organizers anticipate that 600 boxes will be packed and delivered to families in Columbia and the surrounding areas with ZIP codes 17512, 17547, 17368, 17554, 17582, 17575, and 17538. Families that need a Christmas food box can register by emailing ColumbiaChristmasFoodBoxes @gmail.com or calling 717-7153592. Email contact is preferred to ensure accuracy. Sign-up sheets will be posted in the senior facilities so that residents can reserve a meal. Businesses, organizations, and individuals may provide monetary donations to help purchase food. Today, his entire basement is stocked with Plasticville, and about five years ago, his grandson became interested in collecting, too. “He has two sheets of plywood as platforms, and every inch is covered with Plasticville,” Strausner said. An eighth-grader at Marticville Middle School, Matthew said he hopes to have a collection as large as his grandfather’s at some point. “Pappy takes me to train shows, and there’s a flea market up in Adamstown, and it’s a pretty big thing,” he stated. “There’s a guy up there and he’s very nice. I bought Plasticville from him last year and he has it for pretty cheap, so I get a lot from him.” Matthew’s mother, Amy Palmeri, sometimes helps Matthew with his projects. “I tell her to get me this and grab that,” commented Matthew. “I think she’s picked up on what I mean.” Amy, Strausner’s daughter, also keeps track of how many people visit the train display at the church.
For this year’s train display, Strausner will coordinate the placement of houses, stores, churches, motels, municipal buildings, diners, and apartment buildings, whereas Matthew will manage the details, including the trees, telephone poles, people, cars, flagpoles, and mailboxes. Matthew noted that there will be choir risers set up along the outside edges of the train display for children to get a better view of the layout. The holiday train display will be open at the church from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 11 and 18, and Sundays, Dec. 12, 19, and 26. There is no cost to attend, but visitors can bring in nonperishable food items, which will be donated to the Conestoga Community Food Bank and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. “I just get excited talking to people about Plasticville,” said Strausner. The troop funded the work it did at RRWC by selling 4,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies in local stores and restaurants in the spring.
Troop 71348 members who completed the project and will receive the award are Jorja and Rayna Weaver, Jayla and Jenna Hector, Chloe Eshleman, Mirranda McGlauflin, and Emma Wilczynski. The Junior Girl Scouts of Troop 71348 in Manheim Township, all students at Landis Run Intermediate School, have earned their Bronze Award. The girls will receive their pins at a special tea and awards ceremony scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 18. “The Bronze Service Award was a big project,” said troop leader Michelle McGlauflin. “It’(requires) 20 hours per girl of community service, and it had to fit in (a specific) category.” McGlauflin said the girls chose to focus on the award category of “Making the World a Better Place,” and she explained that the project had to continue to give, so the girls could not just spend 20 hours working in a soup kitchen. Troop members knew of Raven Ridge Wildlife Center (RRWC), an animal rehabilitation organization located in Washington Boro, from a presentation they had seen at a
vacation bible school, and they decided to complete a project there, tackling the requirements from a number of angles. According to McGlauflin, the effort began with a tour of Raven Ridge. Working with an RRWC representative, the girls chose an area where they could create a peaceful and mask-free resting area for volunteers. The completed area included painted rocks, a bench, and hanging flowerpots. “We collected rocks at Raven Ridge, so we wouldn’t bring in outside bacteria,” said McGlauflin, who reported that 100 rocks were collected; washed; painted with animals, stars, and positive messages; and sealed. The group also built birdhouses and made hanging planters out of clay, working to discover the right amount of clay to be sure the planters were neither too light nor too heavy. The troop members also built a bench from a kit with minimal adult help. In addition to creating the

Rain, sleet or snow can’t stop Helen Bechtold from giving back to seniors on Christmas Day. “I’ve dug my car out of the snow and driven in to serve this meal,” said Bechtold, who, along with Sis Luzader, has been offering a free lunch for more than 30 years. Even a pandemic won’t stop the “Columbia Christmas Ladies,” although it has changed their plans just a bit. Like last year, this year’s lunch will only be offered to
go, but seniors will have the opportunity to come inside and pick up their meals. The lunch will be served on Christmas Day, Saturday, Dec. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St. The lunch will include ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, cranberry sauce and a dessert. Seniors will also receive a gift bag full of a variety of goodies. “No one goes home without a present,” Bechtold said. She began serving the meal

to seniors 34 years ago, when she worked as director of the Columbia Senior Center. Luzader joined her a year later. “ We wanted to give seniors who are alone on Christmas not just a meal but also a chance to be with other people,” Bechtold stated. “We wanted to let them know that when the holiday is here, people in the community are here for them.” The meal is open to all seniors age 55 and up throughout Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Bechtold noted that seniors have come from York County and even from out of state in past years. “This is not just for lowincome seniors. It’s open to any senior who is looking for a meal or who would otherwise be spending the holiday alone,” Bechtold explained. “Maybe they have family who live out of the area or maybe they don’t have any family. It’s open to everyone.” The fire hall donates the space for the meal, and the Columbia Lions Club provides donations as well. Bechtold also encourages donations of
cash or gift cards from the community to support the event. Members of the Donegal High School wrestling team help with setup on Christmas Eve. Although the meal is not a sit-down event this year, Bechtold said there is still an opportunity to visit with friends. “We can introduce people who may be new in town and encourage fellowship while they pick up their meals,” she noted. Bechtold said that watching people connect with each other is her favorite aspect of the event. “I love seeing smiles on people’s faces,” she commented. “That’s the best part of Christmas for me. It’s knowing we are spreading joy. We want to make Christmas an enjoyable day for everyone.” Masks and social distancing will be required for meal pickup. Reservations are required for the meal by Friday, Dec. 17. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Delivery and transportation options will not be available this year. Church Plans Advent Gatherings The Veritas Community will host Advent worship gatherings each Sunday morning, starting on Nov. 28, at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St. This year’s Advent theme is “A 3-Dimensional Advent,” which centers on the idea that Jesus lived a threedimensional life through relationships with His Heavenly Father, His disciples, and the world. During Advent, members of Veritas will explore and seek to practice this 3D life in the midst of the holiday season. On Nov. 28, participants
will focus on their relationship with the world through an Advent candle lighting and reading; praying for the church’s Advent offering partners, Eastern Mennonite Missions, and HUB 450; and collecting various materials for HUB 450’s after-school tutoring program. The items needed are individual dry erase boards, black dry erase markers, pens, pencils, erasers, notebook paper, manila file folders, and permanent markers. On Dec. 5 and 19, participants will focus on their relationships with other believers. The gatherings will
include a meal, an Advent candle lighting and reading, prayer, and Scripture exploration. Attendees are encouraged to bring food and drinks to share during the meal. Participants will explore their relationship with God on Dec. 12. There will be an Advent candle lighting and reading, musical worship, prayer, a message, and small group discussion groups. Lancaster Bible College | Capital Seminary & Graduate School (LBC) has announced that Lisa Stetter Hosler is the recipient of the 2021 Alumnus of the Year honor. The announcement was made in advance of Homecoming & Family Weekend, which was held on Sept. 24 and 25. The college planned to welcome Hosler as a chapel speaker later this semester. Hosler is a 1982 graduate of Lancaster Bible College and serves as president of Align Life Ministries, formerly Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services.
