OnOct. 10, students from Marticville Middle School participated in Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Keystone’s Construction Wars, a yearly interactive career exploration event. The students had an opportunity to work with professionals from various construction industries such as carpentry, plumbing and masonry.
Each fall, a group of students visits ABC Keystone’s facility, which serves to train individuals in specific trades. Training courses are offered on metalworking, job site safety and electrical work, along with other trades and related topics. Many companies even pay for
their employees to attend classes at the facility immediately after being hired. Construction Wars is an event that serves to encourage students in their interests and guide them through the proper path to pursue a career in the trades.
During Construction Wars, students rotated through six stations, each with its own hands-on activity.
At the carpentry station, students assembled their own wooden step stool. At the sheet bending station, they were coached on how to fashion a tool tray from raw materials. Students then visited the plumbing station, where they assembled and tested a closed-circuit pipe and were educated on the inner workings of a water system. At the masonry station, students put together a brick
wall and layered it.
After visiting the masonry station, students were taken to the site excavation classroom, where they learned how different work sites are excavated and how construction equipment and procedures are coordinated and mapped via computers. Lastly, students received first aid training and were instructed on CPR and emergency procedures.
Each individual who operated a station is actively employed in his or her respective field and granted the students insight on what it’s like to pursue a career in it. Students gained a perspective on aspects of each industry such as the education required to work in it, average pay and working conditions. “If kids don’t want to be on a computer or at an office all day
for work, they can go to (Construction Wars) to see what other options are out there,” said Steve Evans, who teaches applied engineering and technology education classes at Marticville Middle School.
Marticville Middle School previously participated in Construction Wars only once a year, but due to increased interest, it now sends a group in the fall and a group in the spring. The school is currently looking to begin hosting career day once again to provide another opportunity for students to gain insight on prospective lines of work. Evans said the school plans to bring community members into the school to educate children on their fields and guide them through which classes to take in order to best prepare for the future.

Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, will celebrate its 10-year anniversary with a pet food drive and open house on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. A complimentary shuttle service and parking will be available at Lowe’s Home Improvement, 25 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster, to take attendees to the event. Many local food trucks will be present at the event as well as a beer garden, wine tastings, a holiday market and an opportunity to take family pictures with Santa.
During the event, Pet
Pantry will light the exterior of its main building. “Each light represents a life that we have touched,” said Melody Sanders, CEO and co-founder of the organization. “(Pet Pantry) lights the way for animals in Lancaster.” After the building is lit, light refreshments will be available and tours of the building will offered as a way for Pet Pantry to educate the community on its services.
Pet Pantry will also open the doors to its newly acquired location on Columbia Avenue on Dec. 3. The new building will serve as a dedicated trap, neuter and return clinic for cats in the local community
and hold kennels for dogs in search of forever homes. Pet Pantry holds a weekly clinic to spay and neuter feral cats in the local community, often attending to 25 cats per week. The clinic serves as a way to control the feline population and help the cats lead a healthier life. “These are the cats that show up at your house and you start feeding them. Next thing you know, you have a litter of kittens on your doorstep,” said Sanders. “This is the best way to handle it.”
Pet Pantry assists more than 285 families each month, providing them with pet food, treats, litter, lowcost spay and neuter services
and veterinary services at a reduced rate. The organization also operates a rescue that takes in animals that families are unable to care for and places nearly 500 animals in homes each year. “Some people can’t keep their animals, even when we provide food and litter,” said Sanders. “We find homes for these animals. A lot of people can’t afford to do it any other way.”
Pet Pantry will accept pet food donations throughout the month following the open house, and the organization requests dry food for both dogs and cats to be donated. Lights may also be purchased for the lighting ceremony. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/pet pantrylights.

A gift drive for families and children living in the Southern End will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 14, and Saturday, Dec. 17, at Memorial United Methodist Church, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville. The event will replace the previously held Solanco toy drive and has been extended to
include all children 18 years old or younger.
The Solanco School District will accept donations until Sunday, Dec. 11, at all Solanco schools, as well as the administration building. The drive is being coordinated by Avery Hill, Shanna Hecker and Amanda Esterly, who are all social workers in the Solanco School District.
Hill operates a concurrent Angel Tree project for students in Solanco and has made adjustments to the program to ensure that all students in need are taken care of during the holiday season. The Angel Tree program collects wish lists from

over 100 students each year and acquires five items from each list to gift to students.
This year, the Angel Tree program will be limited to those experiencing homelessness; all other students will be covered under the new gift drive. “We’re expanding on what the toy drive has done for years,” said Hill. “Now that we’re doing the drive in addition to the Angel Tree project, we needed to scale (Angel Tree) back. The gift drive historically covers the younger age groups.”
The Angel Tree project began around a decade ago, as an initiative to acknowledge students that are experiencing homelessness in Solanco and ensure they experience a nice holiday. The program has grown over the years and received a great deal of support from the community; it is now able to include children over the age of 12, as well as add
basic necessities such as winter coats to the list of items given out.
“There has never been a year where we’ve had a request that has gone unfulfilled,” said Hill. “I get requests up to the day before Christmas break for donations. Our community is so supportive of the students that we can always accommodate those in need.” If the change in the drive goes well, Hill said she hopes to continue the new
system next year. Due to the larger scope of students covered, the drive needed to change locations to Memorial United Methodist Church to provide the needed space.

Historical Society
At 7 p.m., members of the Penn Manor High School choir will perform Christmas music in Gundel Hall. Before and after the choir’s performance, a pianist will perform several Christmas pieces throughout the property. A prize drawing for a quilt donated by a member of the historical society will take place at 9 p.m.
“We’re starting to see a lot of younger people come to the museum. We have six new volunteers this year who bring their children to the museum,” said Jim Kauffman of the historical society. “The kids always love seeing the blacksmith shop and the other craft stations.”
The historical society will serve cookies, punch, coffee

and wassail, an old-time English beverage, in Gundel Hall. Each year, all of the refreshments are donated by the community.
“Our goal is always to have people visit the museum and learn about the area’s history,” said Kauffman. “The museum gives people an opportunity to see what this place was like in the old days.” Guests of the museum will have an opportunity to learn about the iron works at Safe Harbor, where pieces of local railroads were created, the original native encampments of the Conestoga tribe and a plethora of other historically significant sites.
The museum recently added a compilation of diaries
Production To Showcase C.S. Lewis Tale
Families and children of all ages can step into the world of Narnia this holiday season via an adaptation of the classic C.S. Lewis story “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”
The show is a co-production between Reverie Actors Company and The Trust Performing Arts Center, with performances taking place at The Trust, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Performances are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Nov. 26 and Dec. 10 and 17, as well as Thursday, Dec. 15. An 11 a.m. show has been set for Saturday, Dec. 3, as well.
The production follows the Pevensie children in their journey into the wardrobe, where they meet characters from Narnia. All roles are performed by two actors in this 45-minute adaptation created by Broadway actress Le Clanché du Rand and toured by the Lincoln Center.
The show features four upper-level musical theater majors from Lancaster Bible College’s Music, Worship, &
PA Preferred Website
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture recently launched a website for the PA Preferred brand, accessible at www.papreferred.com. The website allows people to search for Pennsylvania products and connect with farmers.
Items with the blue and yellow PA Preferred checkmark are grown, harvested, or produced in Pennsylvania,
and buying these products means consumers are supporting Pennsylvania farmers and producers and keeping their dollars local. The Department of Agriculture encourages Pennsylvania residents to look for these products while exploring the commonwealth’s farmers markets and farm destinations this fall and winter.

sible on its website. “The diaries have not only information on those who died during that time, but also the lives of people who lived in the Conestoga area,” said Kauffman.
