Training frompg 6 to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.” Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter -acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

United Disabilities Services (UDS) Foundation - a nonprofit committed to helping seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives - has announced its 52nd annual giftwrapping fundraiser. UDS’ gift-wrapping booth can be found at Park City Center in Lancaster from Black Friday, Nov. 25, through Saturday, Dec. 24.

The gift-wrapping booth is one of UDS’ largest yearly fundraisers. In order to staff this year’s booth through its entire 30-day run, UDS is seeking 500 volunteers. Those interested in volunteering should contact Radha Davé at 717-715-8921 or radhad@udservices.org. They may also learn more and contact UDS at www.udservices.org/gwbvolunteer. Palmeri, now age 14, took an interest in his grandfather’s model collection around six years ago, and Strausner himself began collecting models when he was around 6 years old. “My aunt and uncle used to get me a new Plasticville model building for every holiday and birthday,” Strausner said. “They got me quite a few authentic ones from the ’50s, which I still have.”

Strausner remained an avid collector through his teen years but stopped collecting once he went off to college and got married. He and his wife had a son, William, who took an interest in the models at an early age, prompting Strausner to dive back into old hobby around 25 years ago. His current collection numbers over 300 units.

Originally from Danville, Strausner moved to Lancaster in 1962 to attend Millersville University, where he studied industrial arts. He has lived in Lancaster ever since and loves being in close proximity to the many local railroads, his favorite among them being the Reading Railroad, which runs directly past his house. Strausner is an active member of the Train Collectors Association, which meets every month at the Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant in Ronks.

Strausner and Palmeri will collect nonperishable food donations as well as monetary donations, which they will give to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ and Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church’s respective food banks. “I’ve been involved with (Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’) food bank and decided to use the displays to help out,” said Strausner. “We saw during the (COVID-19) pandemic that people were in need.” Last year, Strausner and Palmeri received donations from over 300 people and several monetary contributions.

To donate food or money, pay the two train aficionados a visit during the hours the display is open.
