Millersville Turkey Trot

OnThursday, Nov. 24, the annual Millersville Turkey Trot 5K will return to Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville. A free kids’ run will begin at 8:20 a.m., and the 5K will start at 9 a.m. Registration will be available online until Sunday, Nov. 20, and people may also register at the stadium on the day of the event between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.

Each online registration will grant entry into a drawing for a one-week vacation to the Delaware shore. Additional prizes in the drawing will include gift cards and pumpkin pies, which will be given out after the race.

The kids’ run will consist of two

separate races on the stadium’s track: a 100-meter run for younger children and a half-mile run for older children. Parents will have the option to participate in the kids’ run alongside their children.

This year, the event will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The first Turkey Trot was held on the Sunday before Thanksgiving in 1973 and consisted of a 10-mile run that traveled along Route 999. The United States won the Olympic marathon the previous year, producing a wave of interest in running across the country; over 800 runners participated in the first Turkey Trot. “People were looking for a long run to participate in when the running boom started,” said Tom Eckert, organizer of the Turkey Trot.

York

Hosting a long race in Lancaster met the growing demand for distance races and allowed runners to participate without traveling for several hours.

In the late ’70s, participation in the race dropped significantly, something Eckert attributed to runners getting older and desiring a shorter race. In 1978, the Turkey Trot transitioned from a 10-mile race to a 5K, and those who still wished to run a longer race traveled to Harrisburg and other cities. “We met different needs by changing it to a 5K, and it’s worked well ever since,” said Eckert. The race now attracts over 1,000 participants each year.

For many families, the Turkey Trot marks the beginning of their Thanksgiving holiday traditions. “We see so many families that come together to run and return home to have dinner afterwards,” said Eckert. “This is the kickoff for their weekend. There are always a lot of smiles and frivolity; it makes the whole morning a great event.”

In October, Poiema Visual Arts introduced Sketch It! Sunday, a new program that partnered with multiple local churches to connect with members of the community via visual learning techniques. The organization invited churches across Pennsylvania to participate by providing the churches with drawing paper and writing utensils and encouraging them to invite members of their congregations to sketch and take notes during the service.

“We wanted to share a tool to reach visual learners,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “The activity has the potential to greatly impact creatives. For the analytical, they can take written notes, and those who don’t want to participate have nothing to worry about, as the services haven’t changed at all.” Some churches elected to participate on one specific Sunday that aligned with their schedules in October, and others participated every Sunday of the month.

Poiema Visual Arts began by sending over 200 letters that invited churches to participate, and seven churches across four different counties stepped forward to use the technique. Miller noted that one participating church expressed a desire to integrate Sketch It! Sundays more frequently and asked about other creatively guided opportunities for its congregants. A member of Poiema’s board of directors, who is a pastor at a church that utilized the program, said she was pleasantly surprised at the number of church members who participated and were excited to share their artwork after the service.

Dan was very mechanically inclined and he enjoyed spending time in his garage working on and fixing many different things, including automobiles. He also enjoyed the many beach trips to Ocean City, New Jersey that he took with his family, including the most recent trip this past October. Dan could also be found watching some of his favorite things on TV such as the Philadelphia Phillies baseball games, NASCAR races, the TV show American Pickers, and TV programs about the Alaska Triangle. Dan also relished spending time with his grandson Chase and had a love for hot rods. Dan was preceded in death by his brother Leon. Dan is survived by his wife, Sally, of 48 years, two sons, Justin from Columbia, and Josh, husband of Gretchen Geibe from Red Lion, and one grandson, Chase and sister Rodena Blank from Gap. The family would like to thank everyone who has reached out with their thoughts, prayers, and words of encouragement.

“I’m a pastor myself, and we like it when people look up at us during the service, but when that person leaves with that enthusiasm and realizes that this is an option for them to continue learning, what we’ve done is create a disciple of Christ,” said Miller. Miller has a background in the arts and Christian education, and for several years he struggled to combine his passion for art with his Christian faith.

Over two decades ago, Miller taught at Lancaster Bible College and first began to dream of creating a place

for visual artists to engage with Scripture. He started laying the foundation for what he called “biblical creative theology,” as his life took him down many different paths. Miller spent time teaching overseas, attended seminary in Virginia and briefly lived in Texas before returning to Lancaster County. As his sons grew older, Miller realized that he needed a new direction, as he would no longer need to homeschool them. “(God) gave me permission to

take that box of metaphorical dreams off of the shelf and go through them,” said Miller.

Poiema Visual Arts was officially incorporated and opened its membership program in October 2021. The organization is currently based in Strasburg but is involved with churches across the county and beyond, including areas such as Hempfield, Manheim Township and York.

Church Plans Organ Dedication Concert

First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, will host a concert of famous organ pieces on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. Held in the main sanctuary, the event will feature Peter Stoltzfus Berton, a recitalist from Rhode Island.

The purpose of the program is to dedicate the church’s new organ, a three-manual Allen instrument with the latest in computer sampling technology. The organ is actually five organs in one, emulating instruments from Philadelphia as well as several famous European organs. All of the available sounds of the organ will be utilized by Berton.

The program will include works by Bach, Elgar, Franck and Vierne, along with wellknown hymn tunes and patriotic numbers. The music was chosen to highlight the breadth of tonal color and flexibility of the instrument.

Berton is the organist and choirmaster at Zabriskie Memorial Church of St. John

the Evangelist, Newport, R.I., and the founding executive director of The Choir School of Newport County. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan School of Music and the Yale University School of Music. He is a published composer and has released several CDs.

Light refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall following the concert. The event is free and open to the public.

Comet Teams Wrap Up Fall in PIAA Playoffs

From tennis to cross country, to girls’ soccer and field hockey, the Comet fall sports teams competed in the PIAA Championships over the last week and all saw their seasons come to a close.

The action started Friday, November 4th with Catherine Rabatin making the trip to the Hershey Racquet Club for a chance to earn a state medal. The senior got off to a strong start, handing District 12 champ senior Mia Jeftic, of Central, a 6-2,6-1 loss. Later on Friday the standout senior ended her career with a 6-0, 6-3 quarterfinals loss to junior Mia Matriccino. The No. 3 seed from District One came back to finish third and left Rabatin one match shy of a PIAA medal.

“Catherine had an easy first match, but that second match up was tough,” said head coach Amanda Pryzbylkowski. “Her opponent hit very hard, and her shots barely cleared the net. Catherine had some good rallies but struggled to finish,” she continued. “Her opponent had a crazy one handed backhand and a very, very hard serve. It was a great match. At states you never know what you’re going to get. She was in a very tough half of the draw.”

While the season ends with a loss

for Rabatin, it does not overshadow an impressive career at Penn Manor. She finished fourth in states as a freshman and was third her sophomore year. She captured the L-L League title four times and earned four District Three titles as well.

“She is one of the most decorated tennis players in the L-L League and at Penn Manor,” said Pryzblkowski. “She is excited to continue her tennis career in college.”

CROSS COUNTRY

On Saturday, November 5, Kaleb Kabakjian made his PIAA debut at Hershey’s Parkview cross country course. The junior finished the 3A race in 34th place with a time of 17:08.

“Kaleb won two of our weekly meets, placed 6th at Gettysburg, 8th in the League Meet and was 21st in Districts in addition to his state placing,” said head coach Andrea Kramer. “His personal record for the year was 16:14 at the district meet so he has had a very solid and impressive season.”

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The girls’ soccer team opened their quest for PIAA gold Tuesday, November 8 with a road trip to Council Rock North where they faced off against Neshaminy, the District One champs at 5 pm. The last time the Comets qualified for

states was 2011.

“It was a tall task going in,” said head coach Bill Zapata. “District One is one of the toughest districts in the northeast. They were a lot faster and tougher than we expected.”

And when the final horn sounded, it was Neshaminy advancing.

“We’re upset the season is over but we realize we lost to a very good team,” said Zapata. “They were a very physical team and it caused frustration on our part because we weren’t used to that and I did not prepare them for that.

“But we did have chances,” he continued. “Both Carolyn Hinkle and Alyssa Mann had shots hit the crossbar and we did have a couple of breakaways. Sometimes it depends on how lucky you get.

“Overall, it was a good season. The girls responded to my new formation, and we did well enough (14-6 overall) to qualify for states. That was my one goal for this team and we accomplished that,” he added. “On Monday we were one of just 16 teams in the whole district still practicing. It’s not easy to get to states.”

Their efforts did not go unnoticed as six players received all-star recognition. Alice Burkholder and Carly Keene were both First Team selections. Keene was also one of 12 voted to the All-League team and one of three selected to the AllState team. She finished as the second highest scorer in the L-L League with 23 goals and 20 assists in 17 games.

Second Team all-stars included Carolyn Hinkle, Izzy Kligge, Annaliese Mann, and Lauren Stoner.

“Six all-stars tie the team record for most all-stars in one season,” Zapata noted.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team also hit the road for their PIAA opener, traveling to Conestoga High School Tuesday evening at Teamer Field.

After losing the District One 3A title game three days earlier, the 20-2 Pioneers ended Penn Manor’s season with a closer than it appeared 3-1 final.

“Last year we lost in the first round of districts,” recalled head coach Rachel Suter, “which ended our season. This is the first time any of these players have made the state tournament.”

The Comets (19-6), who finished fourth in District 3, forced the first corner of the game, and worked three more over the next five minutes but came up empty.

Momentum switched through the final half of the first quarter as Conestoga, outscoring their opponents 17-3 in four post-season games, converted a pair of corners to take a 2-0 lead. That score stood through the second quarter and just about 30 seconds of the third before the Comets cut the lead in half. Avery Bradburn sent a smooth corner insert to Tristan Groff who onetimed a shot just inside the left post.

With momentum growing, Conestoga was whistled for not one but two cards in quick succession, leaving the Comets with the perfect opportunity to knot the score. Despite being down two players, Conestoga forced a corner and converted when Shae Wosniak found the back of the cage with 5:06 remaining. It was her second goal of the evening.

The Comets finished with nine shots on goal, and 10 corners. Adeline Arkhurst had 11 saves.

Conestoga finished with 14 shots and nine corners. Goalie Alex Lepore made eight saves.

The Comets were coming off a disappointing 2-0 loss to Manheim Township in a battle for third place in District 3 on Saturday, November 5. It was the fourth meeting between the two teams who split 2-2. The Comets topped the Streaks 2-1 to win the L-L League crown while the Streaks returned the favor just over two weeks later.

“It is very challenging to play the same team time after time,” said Suter. “The stats were pretty even, unfortunately, we just could not find the back of the cage. Annie Bibus and Joelle Kroesen both had standout games on defense

while Liv Cox also played well.”

The Streaks scored single goals in each of the first two quarters and fought off five Comet corners in the second half to earn that third-place spot.

ALLL STARS

For their efforts on the court this season, a pair of Penn Manor volleyball players were recognized with post-season accolades. Senior Cassidy McCollum was a Section One first team all-star and also received a L-L League Academic Award. Lezlie Nguyen, a junior, was a Second Team all-star.

“This was Cassidy’s third year being chosen for the all-star team but her first time making First Team,” said head coach Tim Joyce. “She also had the highest GPA on our team. She was our only senior and served as a highly respected captain. Her teammates voted her as both the 2022 Team CVP and 2022 Attitude-Character-Effort Award winner.”

McCollum finished with 97 career aces, the eighth highest in program history. She also recorded the 10th highest number of kills with 142 and finished with 404 career digs, also the 10th highest in program history.

Nugyen was voted, by her teammates, as Most Improved for the

second year in a row. “As a sophomore she worked hard to earn a varsity starting position as a middle hitter,” said Joyce. “This season she worked just as hard when we asked her to switch to being a right-side hitter. Her calm, steady demeanor made her a serious threat as an attacker and blocker,” he added.

“This was her first all-star award.”

Nugyen recorded 132 kills, 19 blocks and 53 digs this season.

“Nothing makes me happier than to see our clients,” said Danielle Peters, director of the Columbia Food Bank, “but when someone says, ‘You’re not going to see me coming in here anymore,’ that’s music to my ears. Most people don’t want to lose a client, but for us, that means they are back on their feet.”

The Columbia Food Bank has been operating out of St. Paul Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St., for decades. “It started as an outreach of the church. The ladies did a hot lunch program over 40 years ago,” Peters stated. “Very shortly after starting that, they realized something a little more was needed.” The food bank began under the umbrella of the church, but in 2014, it became its own nonprofit organization, renting the space in the church’s parish hall.

“We are not government supported at all,” said Peters. “We depend on the kindness of the community to operate. We get donations from businesses, organizations and individuals.”

Groups including the Boy

Scouts, who donate items collected through Scouting for Food, help to keep the shelves stocked with nonperishable items. The food bank relies on financial donations to provide ground beef, hot dogs, cheese, butter and eggs.

“We also get donations of breads and sweets from Giant and Weis,” Peters commented. “We try to focus on healthy food, but every now and then, you need a cookie.”

Potential clients need to show one form of ID to receive food, and anyone in Columbia, Mountville, West Hempfield or Manor Township is eligible to use the food bank. If someone from another area comes in, though, Peters won’t turn him or her away.

“If you walk through those doors, you are going to walk out with groceries,” she shared, adding that if someone is from outside the service area, she will direct them to their closest food bank for future visits. The food bank staff and volunteers also provide information upon request about other community resources, such as health care or employment services.

Peters credits her co-direc-

tor, Suzanne Ollar, with keeping track of the food bank’s numbers. From January through October of this year, the organization distributed more than 62,000 pounds of food, feeding 795 households and 1,863 individuals.

Clients can visit the food bank once a month, where they

are given bags of food based on household size, along with toiletries such as soap, toothpaste or toilet paper.

“There is such a need for this right now,” Peters said. “Rent is through the roof. Gas prices are high. Most of the people who come to us are working. They are just trying to feed their families.”

Peters said the success of the food bank is due to the commitment of her volunteers and the generosity of the community. “I hate hearing the numbers of how much food we’ve given out, because when I hear them, I start to panic that we won’t have enough,” Peters said, but she finds comfort in the miracle of the loaves and the fishes, noting, “We have never had to turn anyone away.”

The Columbia Food Bank is open from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is located at the rear of the church. For more information, call 717-449-5101.

Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Her-

shey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”

Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bot-

tles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and

hands-on activities. “We introduce them to paramilitary disciplines - march-

ing, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenariobased training.”

Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We

try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”

This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open

to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not

only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”

Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter -acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

UDS’ gift-wrapping booth can be found at Park City Center in Lancaster from Black Friday, Nov. 25, through Saturday, Dec. 24.

Volunteers wrap gifts to raise funds for UDS.

Palmeri, now age 14, took an interest in his grandfather’s model collection around six years ago, and Strausner himself began collecting models when he was around 6 years old. “My aunt and uncle used to get me a new Plasticville model building for every holiday and birthday,” Strausner said. “They got me quite a few

authentic ones from the ’50s, which I still have.”

Strausner remained an avid collector through his teen years but stopped collecting once he went off to college and got married. He and his wife had a son, William, who took an interest in the models at an early age, prompting Strausner to dive back into old hobby

around 25 years ago. His current collection numbers over 300 units.

Originally from Danville, Strausner moved to Lancaster in 1962 to attend Millersville University, where he studied industrial arts. He has lived in Lancaster ever since and loves being in close proximity to the many local railroads, his

favorite among them being the Reading Railroad, which runs directly past his house. Strausner is an active member of the Train Collectors Association, which meets every month at the Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant in Ronks.

Strausner and Palmeri will collect nonperishable food donations as well as monetary donations, which they will give to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ and Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church’s respective food banks. “I’ve been involved with (Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’) food bank and decided to use the displays to

help out,” said Strausner. “We saw during the (COVID-19) pandemic that people were in need.” Last year, Strausner and Palmeri received donations from over 300 people

and several monetary contributions.

To donate food or money, pay the two train aficionados a visit during the hours the display is open.

Chorus Invites Local Men To Join In Event

History Cheer on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will take place at LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster.

Men from the community are invited to join in the Red Rose Chorus’ performance. They may rehearse with the chorus on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. until Nov. 29 at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. The Wheatland performance will consist of four songs, which participants may already know,

and singers will be given sheet music and learning tracks.

Giant To Offer Virtual Holiday Cooking Classes

As the holiday season begins, the Giant Company’s team of dietitians is back with a full schedule of festive, free, live classes via Zoom for families and chefs of all ages this November and December.

Classes will include Holiday Produce, set for Mondays at noon. Attendees will explore seasonal produce and all it has to offer. The recipes will include grape and goat cheese crostinis, cranberry brie bites and holly jolly pom salsa.

Wellness Workshops will be held every Monday at 7 p.m. in November. Dietitians will explain how to achieve blood sugar goals in honor of

American Diabetes Month. In December, the programs will be about self-care.

Family Meals at 5 will be offered on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. The featured meals, which can be prepared in under 30 minutes, will include vegetable couscous with Moroccan pesto in honor of Kwanzaa, Hanukkah-inspired mini latkes with toppings and hoisin chicken meatballs with peanut noodle sauce.

During Build a Board classes, attendees will learn how to create holiday charcuterie boards on Thursdays at noon in November and on Tuesdays at noon in December. Themed boards, such as the

Thanksgiving Breakfast Board or the Mini Board for Santa and Reindeer, will be included.

Better for You Baking classes will teach attendees how to celebrate pie season by creating holiday maple sweetened pecan pie, mini purple sweet potato pies and gingerbread pudding cake with spiced whipped cream. The classes will be held on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. in November and on Thursdays at noon in December.

Mini Chef Mornings will be offered on select Saturdays at 10 a.m. in November and December. Children will be invited to create snacks based upon seasonal books in November and classic holiday movies in December.
