The Lancaster County Community Foundation will hold the seventh annual Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals may visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from any of 500 local nonprofit organizations, and make an online donation. Thanks to the Community Foundation, the High Foundation, and corporate sponsors, all participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. More than 100 vendors will fill the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Nov. 17, for the sixth annual Holiday Shopping Fair. The event will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and proceeds will benefit Furever Home Adoption Center and Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. “We have a really good mixture of crafters, vendors, and (brick-and-mortar) businesses,” said fundraising coordinator Tina Krueger. For the first time in the history of the event, printed and digital photographs with Santa Claus will be available. The shopping fair is pet-friendly, and the photos will be as well. For a small fee, pets and people may pose with Santa from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “You can have (photo cards) ready

for Christmas,” suggested Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. Another first for the event is the addition of a variety of hot and cold foods for people. The menu is being finalized, but it will represent Lancaster County, Krueger said. “Come hungry,” invited Furever Home executive director MJ Meinzer. The first 100 adult attendees will receive goodie bags. While admission to the shopping fair is free of charge, attendees are asked to bring items to donate to the two organizations. The wish list includes bleach, toilet paper, paper towels, liquid or powder kitten formula, canned kitten food, dry cat food, and dry dog food. “This is the first time we’re actually having a shortage of dog food,” Sanders remarked. “We are excited to welcome Alice Hoffman for this year’s Junior League of Lancaster author’s luncheon because she is a very well-known author whose books are familiar to a wide range of people,” said event chair Laura McGarry. “In addition, her newest novel, ‘The Rules of Magic,’ has received a lot of praise. It is exciting to welcome an author who has recently released such a great book, especially one that is tied to as familiar a story as ‘Practical Magic.’” Fans of Hoffman’s novels are invited to meet the author at the luncheon, which will be held on Friday, Nov. 30, at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, 25 S. For some people in Lancaster County, pork and sauerkraut is a meal associated with New Year’s Day celebrations in accordance with the longstanding German tradition of eating it to gain wealth and blessings for the new year. But why not enjoy the delicious combination more than once a year? The folks at St. James Lutheran Church, 655 S. 10th St., Columbia, have been hosting a pork and sauerkraut dinner for the community for nearly 40 years. This year’s event is set to take place at the church on Saturday, Nov. 17. Meals will be served family-style from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the church social hall. In addition to pork and sauerkraut, the menu will include mashed potatoes, a dinner roll, applesauce, and beverages. Attendees will also have their choice of various homemade desserts. Separate admission prices have been set for adults and for children ages 4 to 10. Children age 3 and under may eat for free. Takeout options will also be available. The building is handicapped-accessible. Congregation members work together to shred hefty amounts of cabbage in advance to cure in a crock for the mouthwatering sauerkraut, and cook Peg Shenberger noted that the pork is cooked nearly all day to ensure it is tender and flavored with just the right spices.

The pork and sauerkraut dinner is sponsored by the St. James Men’s Brotherhood and the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (WELCA). Volunteers from the congregation will serve the food. Proceeds will benefit the church maintenance fund and community outreach efforts conducted by both the Men’s Brotherhood and WELCA. Interested individuals may purchase tickets at the door or in advance from church members. Tickets may also be purchased in advance by calling 717-684-5135 or 717-6842096. Organizers prefer that individuals purchase tickets in advance so they can prepare adequate amounts of food. The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) will ring in its 2018 Christmas Concert Series with a performance at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. The 150-voice choir will also perform concerts at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, at First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. LSO Plans Open House Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will hold an open house at its new headquarters, 48 N. Christian St., Suite 200, Lancaster, during the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. For a number of years, Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City program has placed pianos in various locations throughout downtown Lancaster during the warmer months. This summer, there were 12 brightly colored pianos decorated by local artists stationed throughout the city. Each piano, sponsored by local businesses or nonprofits, was placed in the city in mid-May and removed in the fall. A local piano class of eight adult musicians, many of whom are retired, visited the pianos on two occassions over the summer to test out their performance skills. With about two years of lessons under their belts, the group members played a few tunes solo or in tandem at one of the pianos before moving on to the next piano. The songs ranged from Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” to a theme from one of Mozart’s sonatas. The group was led by teacher Linda Rasmuson, who provides individual lessons to children and adults and teaches adult group piano lessons from beginning to advanced levels. The group members mostly performed for their own amazement and amusement, but their enjoyed the opportunity to play for others when they had an audience. The piano class members are looking forward to performing on the Keys for the City pianos again next year. In the meantime, they plan to offer some impromptu performances on the permanent piano that Keys for the City has placed in the food court at Park City Mall.

The special guest speaker for the gala will be Kyle Maynard, who was born with a condition called congenital amputation that left him with arms that end at the elbows and legs that end near his knees. â€œWhen he was born, his parents were told (by experts) that nothing would become of him,â€? said Paskoff. â€œ(But) his parents told him he could do whatever he wanted to.â€? Maynard learned to move without prosthetics, and eventually became a champion wrestler, a CrossFit-certified instructor and gym owner, a competitive MMA/Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter, a world record-setting weightlifter, and a skilled mountaineer. Maynard is also a motivational speaker, bestselling author, entrepreneur, and an ESPY award-winning mixed martial arts athlete. Paskoff recalled the genesis of Aaronâ€™s Acres more than 20 years ago, when a group of parents of children with special needs were talking about the need for camping programs for their children. â€œ(I read) this article on Janiece Seldomridge (one of the founding parents), raising her son Aaron, who has autism,â€? explained Paskoff. â€œIn the middle of the article, there were two sentences (about how the) parents were looking to start a camp.â€? At the time, Paskoff had a counseling and therapy practice for children, but her dream was to run programs for children with special needs. â€œI met with Janiece and Peggy Rosario, who was with Special Kids Network, a program of United Disability Services,â€? said Paskoff. â€œ We held the (first) one-week camp (in 1998) at the Jewish Community Center for 11 children ages 5 to 9.â€? Paskoff said that in 1999, the camp ran for two weeks. Camps later opened opened in Berks County and Dauphin County.

Since then, the program has expanded. â€œ(Aaronâ€™s Acres) has grown over the years because of the support and because of what the parents tell us (they want for their children),â€? said Paskoff. â€œ(The parents) wanted schoolyear programs in addition to camp, so now we have a program during the school year.â€? Recently, parents were concerned because their children aged out of Aaronâ€™s Acres at age 21, so in January 2019, Aaronâ€™s Acres Plus for 22- to 30-year-olds will be offered. When the Jewish Community Center closed in 2014, the camp moved to the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park, where it is still held. The most recent six-week camp served 220 children from three counties. â€œEveryone comes to Manheim now, and we provide transportation from Berks and Dauphin,â€? explained Paskoff. The camp can serve any child regardless of medical or behavioral challenges because Paskoff recruits professional staff, including special education teachers and a nurse, for a 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 staff-to-child ratio. Looking ahead, Paskoff noted that Aaronâ€™s Acres hopes to offer more services for children and adults with special needs. â€œWe are hoping to continue to expand our programs (in the future),â€? said Paskoff. Aaronâ€™s Acres is participating in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. â€œWe will be at the Harvest Moon Bagel Company from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (that day),â€? said Paskoff, who added that the shop is creating a signature bagel called the Aaronâ€™s Acres bagel, which will be cinnamon flavored with apple pie cream cheese. Basketball Tournament To Benefit Lancaster Youths Holiday Shopping Fair from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash

W hen the Rotary Club of Lancaster/Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza started nearly 40 years ago, the idea behind the event was to fill an empty spot in the January F&M basketball schedule. Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a four-team men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January. The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. Since that time, the event has grown dramatically, now including eight top men’s and women’s NCAA Division III games. The men’s William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament will feature F&M, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hobart, and Alvernia University. The Terry Green Memorial Tournament for women will include F&M, Elizabethtown College, Washington & Lee, and Haverford College. The 39th annual Extravaganza will be held in F&M’s Mayer Gymnasium, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 16, 17, and 18. Since 1992, when Marshall joined the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the event has been linked to the group. The Summer Youth Ex perience includes activities that are carefully selected for their benefits to students, specifically helping at-risk youths bridge the gap between the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. The goal is to improve children’s lives and to reduce the likelihood of students dropping out of school. Current club president Althea Ramsay Carrigan noted that the organization is pleased to be able to support the program. “We’re incredibly proud of (the Summer Youth Experience), where youths in Lancaster can learn how to make friends, challenge themselves, improve self-esteem, and learn new skills to close the summer learning gap,” Carrigan said. Approximately 110 felines are being cared for by the combined network of foster homes. Furever Home operates a facility at 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, where about 25 cats live without cages as they wait to be adopted. Pet Pantry, located at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, can house approximately 35

cats on-site and runs a veterinary suite and a thrift store as well. Eventually, Pet Pantry would like to move to a new facility where the two organizations could combine efforts under one roof. “We have a lot of duplication of services,” Meinzer explained. Sanders shared that Pet Pantry needs to buy a truck to haul the new mobile unit, which enables veterinarians to offer spay/neuter clinics away from headquarters. Sponsors for the truck are welcome, and Sanders invited folks unable to attend the shopping fair to donate to the Pet Pantry as part of the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. The GateHouse Promotes Addiction Recovery By Dayna M. Reidenouer

November is set to be a busy month for The GateHouse, whose mission is to restore the human spirit through recovery. On Nov. 1, the organization’s main office moved into the fifth floor of the Griest Building, 8 N. Queen St., Lancaster, and the office’s previous home at 817 N. Cherry St., Lancaster, is being converted into a center for behavioral health services. Members of the public may tour the new headquarters from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, as part of the Extraordinary Give. During The GateHouse’s ExtraGive Soiree, attendees may enjoy refreshments and learn about the mission, vision, and values the organization has offered since 1972 to Lancaster County residents who struggle with addiction. Then, on Thanksgiving Eve, which is Wednesday, Nov. 21, The GateHouse will host the 39th annual TurkeyThon from 7 p.m. to midnight. According to development manager Rick Yanchuleff, the day before Thanksgiving has historically seen the heaviest usage of drugs

and alcohol by folks who are struggling with the emotions and realities of the holiday. TurkeyThon was created to celebrate recovery through fun, food, and fellowship. A complete turkey dinner will be served, and AA and NA meetings will be held all evening. Breakout sessions will be held on the hour, and some will have guest speakers. Counselors will be available to speak with guests. Folks may drop in at any time, and there is no charge to participate. Games and other fun activities will be available for children. “It’s a family event,” Yanchuleff said. “Addiction affects everyone.” The festivities will take place in a large tent set up on the lawn of The GateHouse Mountville, 465 W. Main St., Mountville. Parking will be located across the street in the lots of Froelich Park and Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. The GateHouse is also working to further expand its facilities. Currently, The GateHouse runs a halfway house for approximately 20 men in Lititz and one for about 20 women in Mountville,

The residential substance abuse treatment organization will welcome online donations through the Extraordinary Give on Nov. 16. but a new halfway house will soon be opened in the Rockefeller mansion in Marietta. The new home will have a capacity for 30 women, and the Mountville house will become a facility for men. At all of the houses, clients arrive just after they have completed detox. Once they successfully conclude a 90-day stay, the clients move into one of four transitional living houses in Lancaster city. After they graduate from that stage of the program, clients may live on their own while receiving intensive outpatient treatment. Yanchuleff noted that the treatment program is customized to each individual. “They’re not run through a cookie-cutter process,” he said. The GateHouse is a nonprofit organization that is not specifically faith-based, but God plays an integral role in the recovery

process, Yanchuleff said. Clients participate voluntarily; they are not committed. The GateHouse accepts medical assistance and some insurances as well as safe pay. To offset costs and increase awareness of the organization, Yanchuleff is working to develop a donor base. “Generally, people in recovery know of The GateHouse, but (others) don’t,” he remarked. The hope is that through events like the ExtraGive Soiree and TurkeyThon, members of the public will become familiar with The GateHouse and seek out ways to support the organization and its clients. Fulton Expansion Plans Continue The Fulton Theatre has announced plans for the organization’s upcoming expansion, reported on the projected economic impact of the project after completion, and has given a detailed funding report for the campaign, also known as the Fulton Theatre’s Breakout Performance. The first stage of construction, including updated stage rigging and upgrades to both stage lighting and sound, was recently completed in advance of the Fulton’s premiere of “Treasure Island.” Phase one is continuing this fall with a focus on the West King Street portion of the city block. On-site actor housing will be expanded to 26 artist apartments, which include one-bedroom apartments, spacious star apartments, and comfortable studio apartments. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster will accept applications for multisensory language training in Orton-Gillingham. The 12-month training program will lead to CDC (Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc.) certified dyslexia practitioner 1 (CDP-1). Orton-Gillingham is a structured, sequential approach to multisensory language remediation. Candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree and be willing to commit time to training and after-school tutoring. All clearances required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, including Act 31, must be submitted prior to the beginning of

The exterior of the new rehearsal space also creates an architectural element to Water Street and continues the beautification of Water Street through to the Ware Center. The Fulton Theatre will continue to operate on its normal schedule throughout construction, and productions will not be interrupted. Girls On The Run Team Trains For 5K

training. The cost of these background checks will be borne by the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster provided the trainee completes the training. This training program is of value to all teachers, but especially to those in the fields of reading, special education, and ELL. However, a background in the field of education is not required. This program is also ideal for retirees with a love of learning who want to make a difference in the life of a child. The training program is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council and International Dyslexia Association, which sets the standards for rigor and length of training. Requirements consist of commitment to a minimum of 50 lecture hours and a minimum 100 hours of supervised student practicum. For the student practicum, two students are seen for two hours a week after school hours, one-on-one. Required readings and tests are additional requirements. Training will begin in March with projected completion of May 2020, with no classes scheduled in May or August. Trainees may opt to take the training for free, with a materials fee. Graduate credit is also available; trainees would need to enroll in the course to earn six credits. A total of 180 Act 48 hours will be awarded free of charge at the completion of training. Families who are motivated and committed to take the necessary steps to improve their lives will work with a Salvation Army case manager for social and spiritual support. Nearly 80 Penn Manor High School students participated in field trips to manufacturing businesses on Oct. 4 as part of Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) activities. MFG Day is a national event designed to spread the word to the next generation about the benefits of careers in manufacturing. The students, mainly freshmen enrolled in applied engineering and agricultural education courses, visited High Steel Industries and Ultra Hurley Electronics. At High Steel, students learned about job opportunities such as machine operator, production supervisor and maintenance supervisor. CASA Advocates Take Pledge Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County swore in 19 new volunteer advocates at a ceremony held on Sept. 19. Family and friends gathered at the Emerald Foundation, 2120 Oregon Pike, to watch Judge Thomas B. Sponaugle administer the CASA oath of office. The newly appointed advocates will join other community members in advocating for foster children in the county’s dependency court system. CASA volunteers are asked to regularly meet with the child for whom they advocate and are authorized to interview people in the child’s life such as social workers, attorneys and teachers. They attend court hearings with the child and report their findings to

the judge. Five students from La Academia: The Partnership Charter School (LAPCS) recently attended the Pennsylvania Latino Convention as ambassadors of the school. It was the first convention held in the 222 Latino Corridor, which includes the regions of Easton, Bethlehem, Allentown, Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Harrisburg and Gettysburg and its surroundings and is home to more than 50 percent of the state’s total Latino population. The students were escorted by Dr. Aida Ceara, LAPCS board president and retired associate professor at Millersville University. The Pennsylvania Latino Convention was held at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square on Sept. 20 to 22. The convention was created to serve as the annual gathering to ignite positive change in local communities across the state while ensuring key stakeholders are accessible, accountable and responsive to the needs of the Latino community. Its purpose is to pro-

mote Latino/Hispanic achievements and preparation for local, state, national and global competitiveness by fostering excellence and ensuring equal access to all aspects of Pennsylvania’s shared prosperity and responsibility. The Latino population in Pennsylvania is nearly 1 million. The convention was organized as a bridge for educational, health, housing, employment and economic advancements in Latino communities throughout Pennsylvania using data, research and policy for measurable community progress. Two Penn Manor staff members were chosen to deliver a presentation on artificial intelligence (AI) at two recent state and national education conferences. “AI Demystified: Fact, Fiction and the Future of Learning” was presented by Penn Manor technology director Charlie Reisinger and district superintendent Mike Leichliter at the 2018 School Leadership Conference in Hershey from Oct. 17 to 19.
