n Oct. 26, Aaron’s Acres invited community members to its new facility located at 121 Walnut Hill Road in Millersville. The event included tours of the building and remarks from the nonprofit’s leadership as it launched the next phase of its “Creating One Community, Together ” campaign to fund the transition to Aaron’s Acres’ first permaAaron’s Acres program participants used shakers to give a “drum roll” before the reveal nent home in nearly of the “Creating One Community, Together” campaign’s fundraising milestone. three decades. It was an emotional day for executive director Risa Paskoff. “I still cry when I drive up. When the elevator was getting installed, I cried,” said Paskoff. “The support from the community made this possible. Everyone has believed in us.” The capital campaign has raised $4.5 million of its $5,650,000 goal, which is the minimum amount needed to complete renovations and an expansion project to offer its various enrichment programs in one centralized location. Board members and donors gave remarks during a ceremonial groundbreaking to celebrate the campaign’s Board member emeritus Phylanne Morganstein (right) attended the milestone. “While this event is about a ceremony with her son, Ben Morganstein (center), and husband, Steve building and an accomplishment Morganstein. M o d e l r a i l ro a d i n g i s a n ambitious hobby that demands dedication. Lancaster County is home to a large community of devoted railheads who spend countless hours building elaborately designed displays to incorporate technical knowledge, creative expression and a love for history. You may not always see their thoughtful displays that live behind closed garage doors or in church basements, but many model railroaders are joining a growing movement to make an impact much larger than their train cars. In 2018, Al Strausner and his grandson Matthew Palmieri started an annual tradition that used their passion for model railroading to support local communities during the holiday season. Every December, Strausner and Palmieri set up a model train display at West Willow United Methodist Church (UMC) and opened it to the public on weekends. Admission was offered by donations of nonperishable food items or cash to benefit local food banks in Conestoga and Quarryville. This holiday season marks the first time in eight years that Strausner and Palmieri will not have a model train display at West Willow UMC, but the duo has sparked a revolution of railheads who have been inspired to continue the tradition. “I had always been a fan of the layout in Willow Street and have gotten a few ideas from (Strausner),” said Daniel Tice. “When I found out it was his last year, I contacted him about carrying on the torch.” Tice’s model train display,

located at 231 Farmdale Road in Kirkwood, will be open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays in December from 1 to 4 p.m. Visitors may bring donations of nonperishable food or cash to benefit Quarryville-based nonprofits Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) and Joyfully Made Fellowship. For more information or to schedule a weekday visit, call Tice at 717-951-8770. Tice rediscovered his love for model railroading after he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in 2020. Following radiation treatment, he required physical therapy to regain his dexterity. “I still had my childhood train set, and my wife suggested setting it up on the dining room table,” Tice recalled. “I regained my strength over the next six months, but now I had the bug for model trains.”
The New Danville Railroad (NDRR) has also answered the call to keep Strausner and Palmieri’s tradition alive. On Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 28 to Dec. 27, the group will open its model train display located at New Danville Mennonite Church to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Last year, NDRR teamed up with Strausner, Palmieri and other local railheads to raise funds and collect donations for local food banks; the joint effort raised more than $1,500 and 700 pounds of nonperishable food items. NDRR member Rick Christopher said he hopes to exceed those numbers this year to benefit SNM. “Strausner gave us the idea to open to the public and see what we can do to benefit the community,” Christopher said. “We’re supporting food banks, but it’s also about helping people enjoy the
holidays. The world can be a really tough place - come see a model train platform in operation, have a cup of hot chocolate and forget about all that for a while.” Despite sharing the same goal of supporting local ministries, Tice and NDRR each boast unique model train platforms with distinct features. NDRR’s modular display is over a decade old; constant additions and modifications include a section gifted
to NDRR by Strausner, as well as church pastor Robert Brody’s innovative electronics system. Tice’s O-gauge layout features 120 feet of track and primarily Lionel postwar models manufactured between 1945 and 1969. NDRR holds weekly meetings at New Danville Mennonite Church and is always accepting new members. For more information, call Christopher at 717-419-3411.

If We Closed Our Doors Tomorrow... Who would answer the next fire call?
Every year, Blue Rock Fire Rescue responds to more than 800 emergencies. Without your volunteer fire company: · 800 emergency calls could go unanswered. · Homes, businesses, barns, sheds and vehicles could be lost to fire. · Property damage would increase throughout our community. · Insurance costs could rise due to a lower fire protection rating. · Replacing volunteer firefighters with a paid department could cost local taxpayers an additional $14 million every year. Today, we're asking for your help. We're in the midst of an $11 million campaign to build a modern fire station that will improve response times, support our growing community, and provide safe, functional facilities for our 100+ volunteer firefighters. Thanks to many in our communities, we have just passed the $4 million mark, but we need your help to get to the end. Will you help answer the Call? Your gift today helps ensure we're here tomorrow.
