The Sierra Club Lancaster Group is seeking volunteers for its rescheduled meadow reclamation project at Pequea Township Silver Mine Park in southern Lancaster County, which is now set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10. Originally slated for late October, the event was postponed due to inclement weather. People who want to join in this activity are asked to bring gloves, long pants, work boots, brush trimmers, lightweight saws and water. They should dress to get dirty and wear long-sleeved shirts. Participants should meet Sierra Club outings leader Jim Meenan in the parking lot near the top of the hill. Directions are available at www.pequeatwp.org/park-info. HOLIDAY BAZAAR
227 N. Queen St. (second floor), Lancaster, will host its holiday bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The bazaar will feature crafts, homemade baked goods and jams, Moravian sugar cakes, Moravian stars, and silent auction items. In addition, vintage holiday décor items and free coffee and tea will be available. At noon, there will be a drawing for a vintage, handquilted, queen-size quilt in a Log Cabin design. The winner need not be present. All proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the Moravian Board of World Missions for Disaster Response. Tickets may be purchased until noon. Penn Manor Thespians To Stage “Noises Off” By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“A play within a play” is how director Carole Shellenberger described the concept behind “Noises Off,” the latest play to be produced by Penn Manor Productions. “Our actors are actually playing two characters,” she explained. “Noises Off ” was written by Michael Frayn and will be produced with permission from Samuel French Inc. It relates the production of a fictional play, “Nothing On,” at three stages in the process. Act I takes place at a rehearsal - whether technical or dress, the actors cannot decide. The second act reveals what goes on behind the scenes, and Act 3 is the final performance, which goes terribly wrong. “Noises Off ” is a farce, so while all of that happens, there are love triangles, missed connections, slammed doors, miscommunication,
and - hopefully - plenty of laughs. “It’s been two years of really dark plays, and it’s time to lighten things up,” said assistant director Melissa Mintzer. “Part of the joke is ‘Nothing On’ isn’t that funny even though it’s trying to be funny,” said True Herbert, who will portray Garry Lejeune, who plays Roger Tramplemain. “It’s OK to laugh (at the hijinks on stage),” remarked Alex Anderson, who is one of the only Penn Manor actors to be cast as just one character, director Lloyd Dallas. “I want (the audiences) to have a good time, like we are on stage,” added Leilani Torres, who will fill the roles of Dotty Otley and her character, Mrs. Clackett. In addition to learning what amounts to two sets of lines, the Penn Manor actors have had to learn to speak with British accents for their “Nothing On” characters. They have See Noises Off pg 7

The response to the archery hunts scheduled for Pequea Township’s Silver Mine Park, 200 Silver Mine Road, Conestoga, was predominantly positive. However, as a result of a legal challenge, the hunt was canceled, and all participants’ entry fees were refunded. Hunters may rejoice, though, as another hunt has been scheduled and a new permitting process has been established. The hunt will be held during the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s late archery season on Wednesday, Dec. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019. See Archery Hunts pg 7

The volunteer driving squad is open to members of the public who would like to promote the Extraordinary Give by applying a specially designed magnet to their personal or business vehicle. Magnets will be available through the Lancaster County Community Foundation. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their own magnet at any time from Saturday, Nov. 10, to Friday, Nov. 16. Any licensed driver is eligible to be part of the Give Fleet and may register to participate at the Extraordinary Give website. On Nov. 16, community members may also support the day of fundraising by attending the Family Give Fest and the ExtraGive Fest. Both events are free and open to the public. The Family Give Fest will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Lancaster Marriott, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Children, parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are invited to participate. The event is designed with preschool and elementary children in mind. Families will be able to learn about causes in Lancaster that impact local families every day, give their thoughts on what is important to them, and share their passion with others. The festival will include interactive learning stations, on-site Extra-

The Lancaster County Community Foundation will hold the seventh annual Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals may visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from any of 500 local nonprofit organizations, and make an online donation. Thanks to the Community Foundation, the High Foundation, and corporate sponsors, all participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. For example, if an organization receives 3 percent of the total donations raised during the Extraordinary Give, that organization will receive 3 percent of the stretch pool. An additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered throughout the day in the form of Golden Tickets and other incentive structures. New this year, individuals may support their favorite organizations through peerto-peer fundraising. Individuals may set fundraising goals and share stories and their ExtraGive personal links with their social network to raise support for their chosen organizations on Nov. 16. Community members may become peer-to-peer ExtraGive fundraisers by visiting the aforementioned website, finding the organization they wish to support, and clicking the Fundraise button. Additionally, this year dozens of individuals across Lancaster County will be

The ExtraGive Fest will follow from 6 p.m. to midnight on the second and third floors of the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center. Attendees may count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give and attend performances by local and regional bands. ExtraGive Fest will also serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, featuring screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, social media stations for photo opportunities, and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. From 5 p.m. to midnight, the Griest Building in Penn Square will be aglow with a 14-story light show, making it a glowing symbol of the community’s generosity during the Extraordinary Give. The light show will feature changing colors and patterns that ExtraGive Fest attendees may customize by pushing integrated buttons in an interactive experience. The lights’ responses to the individuals’ actions are meant to create a metaphorical example of how each individual action may impact the community. The record-breaking 2017 Extraordinary Give generated a total of $8.6 million for 464 nonprofit organizations in a single day. More than $31 million has been generated since the creation of the Extraordinary Give in 2012.

all the band directors in the country,” marveled director Andrew Johnson. This is the first time in over a decade that the marching unit purchased new uniforms. Previous uniforms were introduced in 2007, and, prior to that, in 1995. Johnson noted that he wanted a new look and a brand unique to Penn Manor. As a result, the front right portion of the jacket is made of a custom comet-patterned fabric. The drum majors wear a grayscale version of the print, while the rest of the band wears the darkblue and white version. To complement the new uniforms, the marching unit’s field show is “Supernova,” which follows the life cycle of a star. The score includes “Of Sailors and Whales” by W. Francis McBeth; “In the Beginning,” a piece by New Jersey-based reggae band Echo Movement; and “Titanium” as performed by Sia. “We wanted an audience-friendly piece,” Johnson said, explaining the inclusion of “Titanium.” “The first two pieces set the mood.” Vocal elements have been recorded, and they are played back during performances through the use of a synthesizer connected to a laptop running a program called MainStage. “We can create any sound you can think of and trigger it whenever,” Johnson said. “It took us a while for us as parents to get used to (the electronic technology), but the progressive bands are doing it,” remarked marching unit boosters vice president Chris Reitnauer. The boosters purchased the new computer-assisted instrument this year. Through a special partnership with the Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps, the boosters also bought several mellophones and a xylophone. Reitnauer noted that the group is constantly raising money to make purchases like those possible. “With the band growing, we need new instruments,” he said. The marching unit has seen a resurgence in participation lately. When Johnson took
the helm five years ago, the group numbered 45 musicians and color guard performers. Now, it is up to 76 members and is entered in the second-biggest division of Cavalcade of Bands. “We’re relearning the process (of competing),” Johnson said, noting that this is the third year the marching unit has competed in Cavalcade after participating in a noncompetitive organization for several years. The first year back, Penn Manor won the honor of Most Improved Band at the end of the competitive season. “I couldn’t be happier with the progress,” Johnson added. In order to keep the marching unit growing, Johnson works with music department coordinator Skip Reddig to ensure that interest in music and marching does not wane as students mature. “The boosters have been doing more fun things with the band outside of practices (to keep students and families engaged),” Reitnauer added. To keep the marching unit going, community members may sponsor the group or specific instruments, shop at a book and bake sale that will be held in the spring, or enter a golf tournament that is in the works. Folks may also view a performance of “Supernova” on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m. on the practice field at the high school, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The marching until will perform in anticipation of the Cavalcade championships that will be held in Hershey on Saturday, Nov. 10. “We want the community to come out and support the band,” Reitnauer said. Ceremony To Honor Vietnam Veterans

The Vietnam Veterans of America and Associates Chapter 1008 of Lancaster will hold a wreath laying and ceremony in honor of Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m., rain or shine, at Greenwood Cemetery on South Queen Street in Lancaster. The public is invited to attend the event, which will be held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The memorial, which is maintained by the chapter, was errected in the early 1980s in honor of Lancaster County’s Vietnam veterans who gave their lives in service to the country. The Veterans Day ceremony will include the sharing of memories of the soldiers honored on the memorial, and family and friends are welcome to participate. Many stamps will be on display, and stamps of many varieties will be for sale.
Stamp dealers will be available to give value evaluations and to answer questions. The program will end at 9 p.m., but visitors may come and go as they please throughout the event. Haefner uncovered the first fossil in the York side of the Kinzers formation, and a second of better quality was found in spring this year. During performances, the student thespians will balance lines, accents, and stage directions. “There’s a lot of timing (that has to be just right),” Shellenberger said. “We have to really listen to the other characters,” Leilani added. “A lot of things are going on at once.” Act 2 might be the most ambitious part of the production, and it explains the title, with too many noises off stage, Mintzer said. In this segment, the set is turned around, and the audience is virtually invited backstage to see the drama behind the scenes. “It’s like nothing we’ve ever done before,” Shellenberger said. “The actors are actually pantomiming their lines in the front of the set, which is actually at the rear of our stage, and they’re carrying on conversations backstage, which is the front of our stage.” “I couldn’t do it,” Alex said in awe. “They have to know lines for the front part and lines for the back.” The rotating set was built by technical director Mark Dennis. It was designed by seniors Kelsey Thorne and Janet Hershey. each designer. Each set will be used for one show. This was done so that both students may submit entries to the individual events competition at the Pennsylvania State Thespian Conference. If they are rated well there, the students will be invited to compete at the national convention. Shellenberger noted that Penn Manor student Brianna Clow won last year for her set for “And Then There Were None.” “Noises Off” will be performed at the A.N. Ranck Auditorium of Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 17. Any remaining seats will be available at the door before each performance. A free performance for senior citizens will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15. Every November, during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, thousands of shoeboxes stuffed to the gills with small toys, school supplies, and hygiene items are collected to deliver to children in need around the world. While there are thousands of drop-off sites throughout the country, Deb Ward, who serves as the volunteer area coordinator for Lancaster and Lebanon counties, noted that this region is consistently one of the areas that collects the largest number of boxes. “We collected around 32,000 boxes last year,” Ward said. “We’ve got a huge goal this year, and we’re really praying to get over 37,000.” National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves,” shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before.” “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location,” Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person.” In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipi-
ents’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive,” Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in.” One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any,” Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect.” Ward explained that families may use a medium-size shoebox they already own, purchase a designated Operation Christmas Child box at Hobby Lobby, or contact any of the drop-off locations to see if they have any extra boxes available. The cards must be mailed to Pequea Township, 1028 Millwood Road, Willow Street, PA 17584 by Monday, Nov. 19. A drawing will be held at the park barn at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 19, with Lancaster County treasurer Amber Martin participating. Successful applicants will be notified by mail; those in attendance may obtain their permits that night; at the barn at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26; or on the morning of each hunt day. In addition to establishing the hunting permit, Pequea Township has created permits for firewood and vendors. With a firewood permit, folks may collect downed wood in the park for their personal use. Standing trees may not be cut, and each permit will allow up to two cords of wood for one fee. Gleaners may not drive into the forests, but wheelbarrows will be allowed. “There’s a lot of hardwood along the roads,” Evans-Herr remarked. “It’s a lot of wood if someone wants to be industrious.” The vendor permit will give permission for sellers to offer food, beverages, or other items at the park. Evans-Herr noted that of the three, this permit has received the most attention on the park’s Facebook page. Archery hunters must possess a valid archery license and a valid antlerless deer license for Wildlife Management Unit 5B. A fee for the wildlife management permit was established by the board of supervisors during the Oct. 17 public meeting. The decision to host the hunt in the 67acre north portion of the park was approved unanimously by the board of supervisors. Cynthia Evans-Herr, vice chair of the board of supervisors and secretary of the Pequea Township Parks and Recreation Board, noted that the park and the surrounding community are overrun by deer. According to her research, 640 acres of land are needed to healthfully sustain 30 deer. In comparison, more than 30 deer have been counted in the park. When the deer are not destroying farmers’ corn and soybean crops, they are eating the native plants in the forests, making room for the invasion of nonnative species. “Our forest is full of invasives,” EvansHerr lamented. “We need to do what is necessary to manage our resources.” Hunters who want to purchase a wildlife permit must submit a standard postcard with their name, complete mailing address, phone number, hunting license number, and anterless deer license

Comets Fall Short In District Repeat, Fall to LD by Mona Steinhauer
Penn Manor’s field hockey team controlled everything but the scoreboard in this past Saturday’s District Three Class 3A Championship game at Milton Hershey’s Spartan Stadium. They held a 12-4 advantage in corners and led 7-5 in shots on goal, yet top seed Lower Dauphin (19-1-1) secured its 13th District Three field hockey title with a 2-0 shutout, avenging last year’s 3-0 upset at the hands of the Comets. It was LD’s first title since 2014. The second place finish is Manor’s third in four years.
The Falcons took an early lead when Emma O’Neill cashed in on Lower Dauphin’s first corner of the game. The junior redirected a rebound off the pads of keeper Cecily Charles (3 saves) at the 16:42 mark. LD worked a second corner at the 8:50 mark before the Comets put together three over the final five minutes of the half but couldn’t crack the Falcon defense and junior keeper Brandelynn Heinbaugh (7 saves). “We knew that if we continued to work hard we would get some chances,� said head coach Matt Soto. On the plus side, Soto was pleased with the play of Maeve Montgomery and Tiana Edwards. “Maeve was solid in our defensive end and Tiana was all over the back and midfields,” noted Soto. “They had great defensive games.” CROSS COUNTRY Penn Manor’s lone representative in the PIAA Championships this past Saturday, Graham Thomas, a First Team L-L League All-Star, in a field of 228 runners, worked his way through the pack and settled for a 53rd place finish in 17:15. “Both time and place were about what we expected from Graham,” said head coach Tom Ecker. “This is a very challenging course and the field went out fast. At this level of competition, Graham couldn’t hold back at the risk of losing contact, but he needed to save some energy for the last mile,” Ecker explained. “He did a great job managing his effort to get the best place finish.”

Church To Host Jazz Musician Cuban music. Her most recent album, the 2017 trio album “Makes the Heart to Sing: Jazz Hymns,” features 12 of her jazz arrangements of classic hymns, along with a companion sheet music book. Her work also includes 80 sacred music originals and arrangements, including two jazz Masses. She was a guest on “Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz” on National Public Radio in 2003. Witkowski has won several competitions throughout her career, including the ChoralArt New England Carol Contest and the Illinois-ACDA Choral Composition Contest. In
2015, she was one of five composers selected for the New Dramatists Composer-Librettist Studio, where she composed five music theater pieces in the space of two weeks in collaboration with five playwrights. She is also the recipient of a 2018 New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Grant. In the spring of 2018, Witkowski spent eight weeks in Bahia, Brazil, doing research for her new project, the “Nossa Sehhora Suite.” The suite will merge Afro-Brazilian expressions of the Virgin Mary with new jazz compositions for Witkowski’s jazz quartet,
is part of Pilot International, a worldwide service organization providing leadership opportunities to youths, promoting brain wellness and safety, and supporing families of persons with special needs. After discharge from the U.S. Special Forces, Donnelly became an ultramarathon runner, competing in races up to 150 miles. Applicant should have knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles for enterprise fund accounting and governmental accounting principles promulgated by the GASB and FASB. Responsibilities include maintaining computer software applications for GL, AP, Fixed Assets and Project Accounting; preparing financial reports; maintaining bank accounts; processing vendor invoices for payment; assisting Financial Director with preparation of annual budget, annual audit, and developing and implementing internal control procedures. At a minimum, applicant must have a BS in accounting or finance and 3 years professional accounting work experience. CPA or CMA is preferred, but not required. At time of hire, candidate must possess a valid PA driver’s license and meet our insurance provider’s eligibility requirements. A pre-employment medical exam and drug test are required.
