TMillersville Borough Plans Veterans Day Ceremony
he Millersville Veterans Day ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the Millersville Veterans Memorial in Freedom Memorial Park, 9 Shertzer Lane, Millersville.
The Millersville Veterans Memorial was dedicated on Nov. 11, 2013. Since that time, Millersville Borough and the community have continued to celebrate Veterans Day at the memorial.
Ten of the 854 bricks in the memorial’s brick courtyard will be dedicated at this year’s ceremony. Anyone who would like to purchase a brick to be dedicated at a future Veterans Day ceremony may fill out a form at www.millersvilleborough.org or contact the borough office at 717-872-4645.
In addition to the brick dedication, the ceremony will include a reading of the names of those honored on the Hometown Heroes Banners. The anthems for each of the military branches will be played, and veterans will be invited to stand to be recognized for their service. Faye A. Williams, a United States Army veteran, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and Emma Danae Droz will sing the national anthem. Gary Coxey will play taps.

Ladies Night Out Group To Host Musician and Author
The Ladies Night Out group from Millersville Community Church, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville, will host Lori Zimmerman on Friday, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m.
Lori, the church secretary and administrator, will share her journey of faith through both story and song. Refreshments, including Kazakhstan-inspired snacks, will be available.
Lori grew up in Lancaster County in a large Christian family where faith and music were woven deeply into her life. Gifted with a love for singing and playing instruments, Lori and her first husband, David Potts, shared God’s message through music, performing together and writing original songs while serving as missionaries in Kazakhstan. “(Films are) an escape,” said Shank. “I’ve always loved stories. I grew up on Ninja Turtles, and I also grew up on ‘Jaws.’ I love to laugh. It’s almost like therapy in a way. I’d rather listen to a story and relate to it than talk about myself.”
This year’s edition of Shank’s annual Red Rose Film Festival will be staged on four days, from
Thursday, Nov. 6, to Sunday, Nov. 9. The festival will include screenings of 60 films - feature-length movies, documentaries and shorts - from 20 countries, as well as a pair of formal gatherings.

“The welcome party is just that,” said Shank, a 2004 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School.
“It’s a happy hour for filmmakers. You’re enjoying food, and you’re talking about your projects and your passion. The gala is held after all the films have been screened at least twice over the weekend. Do I call it a red-carpet event? Yes. Is it a black-tie event? No.”
“The highlight of the festival should be the works,” continued Shank. “But it will be the Lancaster businesses and filmmakers coming together. It’s really a networking event. The film industry, at its core, is collaborative.”
The 60 films that the Red Rose Film Festival will feature were selected from a group of 200 submissions. Each film was viewed by five judges from a panel of 50 and then was assigned a rating from 1 to 10 based on 10 criteria.
The majority of the films that will be screened at the festival received ratings of 8 or higher.
Among the movies that will be presented are a film called “Adamstown,” which was produced by Lancaster-based Rwandan filmmaker Andrew Bilindabagabo, and “Keep Quiet and Forgive,” which was produced and directed by Lancaster cinematographer Sarah McClure.
In 2023, it was estimated that 9,500 films were produced around the world.
“They’re thoughts and ideas that people have the courage to put on the screen,” said Shank. “How many ideas are there? How many thoughts do you have in a day?”

Through her grief and faith journey, Lori continued to share their story - writing letters, visiting supporting churches, and eventually discovering her own voice as a writer and songwriter. Now remarried to Carl Zimmerman and celebrating the joy of being a grandmother, Lori has written a new book titled “One Steppe at a Time,” which shares her story of trust, obedience, and God’s faithfulness through life’s challenges.

Veterans Day
Borough will honor veterans with a ceremony on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will be in attendance, as well as the Penn Manor Military Club. Fifth-grade students from Martic Elementary School will make cards to hand out to veterans after the ceremony. Conestoga River Girl Scouts will support veterans with poppy pins.
Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen Shaw with 25 years with the United States Marine Corps and National Guard, will be the speaker for the event. Other community members participating will include Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons; state Rep. Ismail SmithWade-El; Terry Trego, deputy chief of staff for state Sen. Scott Martin; Stephen Ranck, constituent outreach coordinator for Congressman Lloyd Smucker; Police Chief Jeff Margevich; Millersville Borough manager Rebecca DeSantis-Randall; and Millersville University police officer Ivan Gonzales with his police trauma dog, Brooks. Millersville Borough Mayor David Aichele will be the master of ceremonies.
Organizations supporting the event include John Herr’s Village Market; Herr’s Snacks; Members 1st Federal Credit Union, Millersville Branch, which will donate the memo-
rial wreath; Millersville University; Millersville Borough; Millersville Borough Police; and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, which will supply a golf cart to transport people from the parking area to the memorial.
Those attending the ceremony will receive a small American flag, and light refreshments will be served. The ceremony will be held rain or shine; if there is rain, it will be held in a park pavilion.
Penn Manor Students Invited to Movie Night
The Penn Manor Civitas club will host a movie night for elementary students ages 4 to 10 on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville.
The event will include activities such as crafts, coloring, board and card games, and backyard games like cornhole and frisbee toss. Snacks will be available, and students are also welcome to brings their own snacks.

Scott will share newly discovered information about the original 1710 settlement in the Pequea Valley. While conducting research for his book “Chain of Title,” which explores the history of a local grist mill, he uncovered previously unreported information about a group of pioneers who provided the toehold for European settlement in Lancaster County. A question-and-answer period will conclude the meeting.
Scott is a retired medical device executive who has become very involved with the local historical research community. He converted an abandoned grist mill along the Pequea Creek into his current home. He has spoken around the country about historical research methodology and is a supporter of local historical associations, including the 1719 Museum, where he volunteers as a tour guide and researcher.

Over the festival’s four days, more than 1,000 people, mainly from the country’s northeast corridor - Pennsylvania, New York and Baltimore - are expected to attend the Red Rose Film Festival. Many of them will experience feelings of escape.
“Our biggest audiences are the filmmakers and their families,” said Shank, a resident of Marietta. “People who support the arts are typically 55 and older who want to send the elevator back down. They want to have conversations with these filmmakers, and those conversations matter. That’s what this platform provides. This is why we’re here.”
Through his creative passion for films, Shank established the Red Rose
Film Festival in 2019.
“We technically copied an idea for a film festival from Dubuque, Iowa,” said Shank. “The Julien Dubuque International Film Festival is one of the top-rated film festivals in the country. They focus more on tourism than filmmaking. I was like, ‘Why don’t we have this in Lancaster? Let’s take Lancaster’s love of Lancaster and create a film festival.’ Lancaster loves Lancaster.”
“It keeps me in proximity of an industry for which I chose Lancaster over Los Angeles,” Shank continued. “I didn’t want that life, and now I’m very fulfilled. I didn’t need fame to fulfill my dream. The Red Rose Film Festival has become my platform. This is my way to be connected to artists and filmmakers.”

Bethel Church Plans Hymn Sing

Main St., will hold its fall hymn sing on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 4:30 p.m.
Participants may request Thanksgiving songs, Christmas carols, and other hymns. The hymn sing will also include a ukulele duet by twins Eileen Hodgen and Kathy Kline. After the event, a soup and
sandwich supper will be served in the fellowship hall.
A freewill offering will be accepted to support church members Matt and Janel Howe on a mission trip to Kenya in May of 2026 to help staff a vision clinic.
