Martic M.O.S.T. Offers Message For Veterans BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
eterans Day will be observed on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Typically, Martic M.O.S.T. hosts “A Salute to Veterans” at Marticville Middle School on the Saturday before Veterans Day, but because of the coronavirus, the event has been canceled. This would have been the eighth annual commemoration held by the support group. Although the Salute will not take place, organizers wanted to send a special message. “We want to remind the veterans of the community how much we respect their role in defending our freedoms,” said Dannel Wissler. “We want them to recognize that we haven’t forgotten them,” added Pete Thorsen. Thorsen said he plans to spend Veterans Day with his son, who served in Afghanistan. “Recognize someone you may know who might be a veteran and say thank you to them,” Thorsen suggested.
which Wissler considers to be remarkable. “Our community and the Penn Manor School District have been especially supportive of this event. The community has come out in support of each other,” Wissler said. “As we think about not being able to gather this year, Martic M.O.S.T. wants to say that we remember our veterans, we’re cheering them on, and we’re looking forward to having another Salute next year.” “We certainly hope to have the Huey helicopter come next year. We had planned to have it last year, but they had a mechanical issue,” Thorsen noted. “We will probably grow in size in terms of what will be there for viewing,” he added, suggesting that more World War II vehicles will be exhibited at the 2021 Salute as compared with previous events. Individuals who want to do something tangible might consider donating to organizations that provide support for veterans and their families, Wissler said. Check presentations to Veterans’ Victory House in Lancaster have been made at past Salute events. Wissler also mentioned Building Bridges Foundation, the equine-assisted therapy organization in Conestoga, and Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, as possible beneficiaries. “There are a lot of people who are working to help veterans in their own ways,” she added. The Quarryville VFW in Holtwood also provides assistance to veterans. “If there’s anybody who needs support, talk to ... the Quarryville VFW,” Thorsen advised. “We work very closely with them. They’re instrumental in the planning and execution of (the Salute) too.” “A Salute to Veterans” brought together a diverse group of people and represented a wide age range,

The organization officially changed its name from Washington Boro Society for Susquehanna River Heritage and launched the new www.bluerockheritage.org.
