Nov. 30, and Thursday, Dec. 1,in partnership with Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania (JASCPA). The summit will provide interactive learning modules for the school’s freshmen on biology, chemistry, engineering, manufacturing, mathematics, physics, technology, STEM relay and multiple trades. A light breakfast and lunch will be available for volunteers.

TheTamburitzans music and dance troupe will perform at Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St., Lititz, on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m. The group has performed across the United States as well as internationally and will present traditional music and routines from various European cultures. Among its performers is Cody

McSherry, a Conestoga native who will return to Lancaster County as a member of the group for the first time.

This year marks the 86th consecutive season that the Tamburitzans has performed, and the group bills itself as it the longestrunning live stage production in the United States. The group was founded in 1937 by A. Lester Pierce after he met three young

tamburitza musicians. They performed as the St. Thomas Tamburitza Trio until traveling to Pittsburgh, which Pierce felt would make a good headquarters due to its cultural diversity. Pierce made a work scholarship arrangement with Duquesne University for the performers, and they became known as the Duquesne University Tamburitzans in the 1940s.

The tamburitza, after which the company is named, is a family of stringed instruments originating from Croatia and is commonly used in folk music from Serbia, Bosnia and several surrounding countries. In its earlier days, the Tamburitzans focused only on music from Eastern Europe, but has since expanded its catalog to feature multiple other cultures. “As the world has changed, so have we,” said Alyssa Hrishenko, executive director of the Tamburitzans. “We’ve done Bollywood and Latin American performances and try to respectfully represent as many countries as we can across the states.”

The summit relies on volunteers to run its activities; each volunteer will be assigned to one of the nine modules and will receive written instructions and a QR code for a training video. Working in unison, the volunteers at each station will lead their assigned 30-minute activity nine times throughout the day as groups of students rotate through the stations. A STEM background is not required to become a volunteer, and JASCPA encourages those participating to share their personal experiences and career path insights with students. “We don’t need everyone to be a biologist or a chemist,” said Shannon Baker, vice president of program operations for JASCPA. “Often we’re able to show kids that you don’t always know what you’re doing the first time and that’s OK.”

Each day, the summit will have over 300 students participating and will require 29 volunteers to operate it. Volunteers are provided from school faculty and members of JASCPA, as well as local residents interested in assisting. The goal of the summit is to introduce students to different aspects of STEM and multiple trades. “The activities are fun. We want kids to get involved and get

excited about science,” said Baker. “It’s not a career fair, and by the end of the day, the volunteers are going to be experts on their topic.” Since volunteers will be present for a single day of the event, no clearances are required by the school district for volunteers, but they will be required to follow a code of conduct.

The STEM summit is one of many programs JASCPA offers for free in schools throughout Lancaster, York and Adams counties. Each program is tailored toward a specific age group and tackles a different subject. The Real Life program is a financial literacy course for 11th- and 12th-grade students that provides an opportunity to gain experience creating budgets and navigating real-life scenarios. Another activity offered by JASCPA is the YES program, which educates middle school students on the importance of financial decisions in everyday life. JASCPA offers up to five different events per week throughout the area and requires over 3,000 volunteers each year to operate them.

Several years ago, members of Millersville’s veterans memorial committee felt that the borough needed a way to honor local veter-

ans. On Nov. 11, 2013, the Millersville veterans memorial was dedicated, and the first memorial service was held. The service has been held every year since, with the exception of a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will begin the memorial service. Before and after the cere-

mony, the Penn Manor High School jazz band will perform, as well as the school’s vocal jazz ensemble, which will sing the national anthem. Members of Penn Manor’s military club will also be in attendance, and after the ceremony a class of local fifthgraders will give out handmade cards to veterans.

“We always invite students to participate because it’s important for them to remember those who serve and make it so we can live a free life,” said Susan McCullough, an organizer for the ceremony. “The kids always take everything in at the ceremony, and I hope some of them will be running it someday.”

Millersville University’s deputy chief of police, Howard Bauman, will speak during the event. Bauman is a veteran who has served in both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy. Dave Aichele will serve as the master of ceremonies, and snacks and light refreshments donated by John Herr’s Village Market will be offered after the service. A wreath donated by Members 1st Credit Union will be placed on the memorial.

“It really is a community eventso many people get involved,” said McCullough. “We ask anyone to come spend an hour with us and honor our veterans, as well as those currently serving.”

Each year, the borough sells bricks that people may buy and have engraved with the name of a veteran; the bricks are then dedicated at Freedom Memorial Park. This year, the borough will dedicate 11 bricks during the service.

The Comet sports teams were busy over the last week. The field hockey team won another L-L League crown while both the girls’ soccer and volleyball teams advanced in District Three play with opening round tournament victories. And the football team continued its reg-

ular slate of games and has just one game remaining.

FIELD HOCKEY

In a rematch of last year’s Lancaster-Lebanon League championship game, the Comets defeated the Streaks 21 at Conestoga Valley HS Thursday, Oct. 20, collecting its third straight crown and fifth in six years.

“It feels good to bring home the gold again,” said head coach Rachel Suter.

Grace Gerner gave the Comets an early cushion, scoring on the Comets first corner of the night with 6:49 left in the first corner. Tristan Groff took the corner insert from Avery Bradburn and fired a shot at the cage which Gerner tipped for the early lead.

“The girls came out with great energy, so it was great to see those efforts rewarded so quickly with that early goal,” Suter said.

The second quarter exhibited a lot of midfield play with Township creating three corners to Manor’s one. After the break, however, the Streaks intensified their offensive attack, creating five corners while keeping the Comets at bay. One made it to the back of the cage but a referee call prior to the goal ruled a corner.

“After that third quarter, we talked about organized defense for the last quarter,” Suter said.

“Overall, I think the girls played incredibly. They started fast, strong and loose, which led to a victory for our team.”

The Streaks kept at it and eventually Rhylee Givins tied the game during field play with 10

minutes left in the game.

The Comets didn’t blink and went back to work. Then, with 1:06 left on the clock, Groff made good on Manor’s second corner of the half, awarded when Izzy Thatcher was fouled in the circle. Bradburn set a smooth insert to Groff who collected the pass, and one timed a shot that cracked off the back of the cage for the game-winner.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The girls’ soccer team opened District Three action as the fourth seed out of Class 4A. They hosted No. 13 Northeastern Tuesday, Oct. 25 and wasted little time in setting the tone en route to a 3-0 shutout.

“After such a long break, the girls were just dying to play,” said head coach Bill Zapata. “I thought we played really well and our passing game was impressive. That’s the best we’ve looked all year with passing.”

In the ninth minute and on their first corner of the game, Carly Keene served the ball into the box where Kennedy Dings headed home her third goal of the season.

“We’re pretty sure that’s just the second time this year we’ve scored on a corner,” Zapata noted. “But it was Carly’s 18th assist which is an unofficial assist record, breaking Holly Homsher’s record set in 2003. She also has the record for most assists in a game,” he added. “Five against Exeter earlier this year.”

Eight minutes later Carolyn Hinkle sent a through ball to Keene who made it 2-zip with Northeastern barely possessing past the 50-yard line.

“That goal actually started with Kelly Wall,” said Zapata. “They tried to clear the ball and Kelly stepped in front of a Northeastern player and headed the ball to Carolyn who then dished the pass to Carly.”

Manor’s last goal of the half, and of the game, came with 12 minutes left in the half. Lauren Stoner sent a pass to Hinkle who lofted a shot over Bobcat

keeper Riley Keefe.

The Bobcats threatened more early in the second half but Manor regrouped, putting together 12 shots on goal.

“We finished with 19 shots on goal and seven other shots that were just wide or high,” said Zapata. “Sometimes we just struggle to finish but we got the result we wanted.”

VOLLEYBALL

With a team-high 11 kills and five aces from Cassidy McCollum, the volleyball team posted an upset victory in the opening round of the District Three tournament Tuesday, October 25. Playing at No. 5 Central Dauphin, the Comets, seeded 11th, used a 25-23 first set result to fuel a 3-1 victory.

“This is our first district win in over a decade,” head coach Tim Joyce pointed out. “Last year we were 2-12, the worst record we’ve had since I’ve been head coach. This season has been our best record and deepest run in ten years. We were the only 4A team to upset a higher seed in the bracket last night.”

The Rams battled back after that first set, taking the second set 25-21 but it wasn’t enough as Manor pulled away, winning 25-17, 25-15 to advance to the quarterfinals.

“We were a little frustrated in the second set,” said Joyce. “We were down 16-6 and 22-12 before Janelle Bowmaster went on a strong serving run to close the gap and force a CD timeout. I told the team that even if we couldn’t overcome the lead, we could carry the momentum into the next set and that’s exactly what we did. Our captains, Cassidy McCollum and Eliana Knaub, set a positive tone between sets and offered tactical strategy,” he continued. “We adjusted our rotation a little and got middle blocker Taylor Long a little more into the match, slowing down some of their hitters. By the fourth set, our hustle and momentum were sustaining us, and we were able to capitalize on a young CD

squad’s inexperience.”

The 10-6 Comets also got 31 digs from Jordan Bailey, 6 blocks from Briana Lee, 34 assists and 9 digs from Knaub, 10 kills from Lezlie Nguyen and 9 digs from Maggie Garvey.

“Eliana also had 18 service points,” noted Joyce. “Not aces but serving turns where we earned the point.”

Bailey, McCollum and Garvey added 10 service points each.

FOOTBALL

With a slow start, the Comets were handed its second straight loss at the hands of Manheim Township Friday, Oct 28 in Millersville. The Streaks, currently tied for second place in Section One, earned its fourth straight victory (7-2 overall)

when they slapped a 35-13 loss on the Comets.

The Streaks set the tone early, scoring two short TD’s (15-yard run, 4-yard pass) in the first quarter and tacking on three more in the third for a 35-0 lead at the break.

The Comets got on the board in the third when Clark Wagstaff snagged a 9-yard Eli Warfel TD strike and again in the fourth, this time Warfel hit DeShawn Stanley with a 16-yard scoring toss. Warfel completed 6-of-11 passes for 102 yards and rushed another 65. Noah Bolin was on the receiving end of Warfel’s longest pass, a 62-yarder. Adam Ditmer and Dhamir Wesley combined for 15 tackles as the Comets fell to 2-3 in Section One and 4-5 overall.

Project Receives Wildlife Grant

The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), with the recommendation and support of the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, applied for and was awarded a Huplits Wildlife Grant of $9,800. The grant will focus on a wildlife habitat revitalization project at MCC’s 9-acre campus in Akron.

In tandem with the eradication of invasive species, the project will provide educational opportunities for local schools, community groups, and other organizations, as well as research projects for young adults that concentrate on the restoration of woodland. Currently, MCC, whose campus is strategically landscaped to promote biodiversity, offers children and community groups hands-on education that promotes healthy forests, native

plants, wildlife, solar energy, and water conservation.

The grants are subsidized by the private Myrtle Huplits and Woodman Huplits Foundation of Yardley, which was founded in 1991 and most recently had more than $1.8 million in revenue. Sierra Club entities, as well as non-Sierra Club organizations in Pennsylvania that share similar goals with Sierra Club groups and/or the Sierra ClubPennsylvania Chapter, can participate in the competition.

For more information about MCC’s project, email katrinalefever@mcc.org. Complete details regarding the grants competition can be found by visiting www.sierraclub.org and searching for Huplits Wildlife Grant at the bottom of the home page.

Craft items are handmade by church members, said Hilary Smith, bazaar team member. “It’s always a nice variety of fall and Christmas items and a lot of gift items,” she said.

New this year, the bazaar will feature local children’s book author Shelleen Weaver, who will be selling and signing the first three books of her “Fruit Fables” series. The stories use the adventures of talking animals to discuss the godly character traits Paul talks about in Galatians 5:22-23, known as the “fruit of the spirit.”

Along with vendors, the bazaar will feature giveaway baskets showcasing a variety of themes, including Pennsylvania sports teams, kitchen and household goods and family night out/family night in,

Smith stated. “We also have local gift cards to Columbia and Wrightsville businesses,” she noted.

Lots of food will be for sale at the bazaar as well, Smith said, including pretzel sandwiches, hamburger barbecue, stuffing balls with or without gravy, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut and baked goods, including peanut butter balls, cheesecake, cookies and mini apple pies. Chicken corn soup, bean soup and tomato bisque soup will be featured. “Our soups are a big hit,” Smith remarked. “We usually sell out.” Homemade chili will be available to go. All other food items will be available for eat-in or takeout.

Proceeds from the bazaar will be used for ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the

church property, Smith said, noting that the church currently has a few big projects in the works.

Pictures of craft items and giveaway drawing basket items are available at www.historic salemucc.org or may be found on the church’s Facebook page by searching for “Historic Salem United Church of Christ, Columbia PA.” The church social hall may be accessed from the Burning Bridge Antique Market parking lot, 304 Walnut St.

Zombie Run 5K Benefit Event Set

Field of Screams will host its 10th annual Zombie Fun Run 5K on Saturday, Nov. 12, with proceeds benefiting the PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC). Daytime and night races will be offered.

During the event, runners will race through mud, crawl over obstacles and jump through fire while being chased by “zombies.” This year’s run will feature three new obstacles for runnersbarn walls, an inverted triple threat and a jungle rig. Registrants may choose to participate as an individual or as part of a team. Zombie registration is also available.

Each participant will receive a Zombie Fun Run T-shirt, a race medal and admission to the Living Dead After Party. Parking and spectator entries will be free.

For every participant registered, Field of Screams will make a contribution toward the PBCC’s program and services for women and families facing breast cancer. The PBCC offers support to women by providing free Friends Like Me care packages, personalized patient advocacy, educational programming and legislative advocacy.

In addition, the PBCC has awarded nearly $5 million to breast cancer researchers across the state. Field of Screams has contributed more than $60,000 to the PBCC. More information about the organization is available at www.pabreastcancer.org.

For more information and to register, visit www.zombiefunrun.com. Field of Screams, a Halloween attraction, is located at 191 College Ave., Mountville.
