“JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR”

Millersville University Theatre will present the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” at 8 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 8 to 10, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The performances will take place in Clair Performance Hall, 60 Cottage Ave., Millersville. “Jesus Christ Superstar” is a rock opera that is said to have reinvented musical theater for the modern age. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the musical is loosely based on the final week in the life of Jesus Christ, from the point of view of Judas Iscariot, and features a mix of musical styles that draw upon 1970s rock, gospel, folk, and funk themes. FFA Groups Will Host Informational Rally By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Manor FFA Alumni is a group of individuals who champion the Manor FFA chapter and agricultural education at Penn Manor High School. “Community support here is second to none in the state,” remarked Diane Glock-Cornman, agriculture teacher and chapter adviser who networks with others in her position across Pennsylvania. “It says an awful lot that the alumni want to come back and reinvest (in the chapter).” Membership in the alumni group is open to everyone with an interest in the cause, regardless of whether they were a Manor FFA member. There are numerous ways that folks without agriculture backgrounds can be of use. The Manor FFA Alumni organization hosts fundraisers, funds year-end awards, and interviews students for the chapter

officer team. “They’re a great support,” added chapter reporter Alyssa Chalfant. “When I started (raising and showing) pigs, I knew nothing. (Alumni members) Megan Shertzer and Carroll Herr helped.” For the past few years, Manor FFA Alumni has raised money to purchase a bus for the chapter so that transportation will always be available to FFA activities. The group is in the process of shopping for the right vehicle. Additionally, Manor FFA Alumni will host a rally on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The event will be open to the public free of charge and will include a light meal. During the event, guests will learn about the alumni organization and the chapter and hear updates on the construction of the new high school and how the ag department will be affected. A design See FFA Rally pg 6

A rally on Nov. 8 at Penn Manor High School will introduce the public to the Manor FFA chapter and the Manor FFA Alumni group as well as provide an update on the construction of the new high school and its impact on FFA and the agriculture department. Inviting the public to attend are (from left) Mike Brumbaugh, Darby Conrad, Diane Glock-Cornman, Alyssa Chalfant, Cody Hurlburt, and Missy Eshbach.

DALE HAMBY for State Representative, 100th District

www.electhamby.com Dear Voters, Pennsylvania is rich with natural resources, educational institutions, and a tradition of hard work. However, we are not all sharing in what should be a period of great prosperity. • Citizens are being hit by ever-increasing property taxes. • Young people are graduating from higher education and training with huge debts. • And, yet, our state legislature increased its pay by 25% over the last 12 years. Our full-time-legislature-that-meets-46-days-a-year is failing us. I am running to fight for change in Harrisburg. I have a 4-step plan to provide property tax relief and provide greater equity between our schools. I believe that a legislature that is only in session 46 days should be part-time, with greatly reduced pay and benefits. I believe that the money saved from these cuts could make a start in addressing our needs too.

This year’s event will focus on women in the military. The program will include a fireside chat hosted by Marlena Larson, who will interview three women who will talk about their military experiences. Throughout the morning, there will be performances by the Central York Fife and Drum Corps, Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, Solanco Community Choir, and Young Marines. The keynote address will be given by Col. Matthew D. Konopa, who currently serves as the assistant chief of staff for human resources and troop commander, Regional Health Command-Central, Joint Base San Antonio. He is the son-in-law of Woody Sampson, a Martic M.O.S.T. member who died earlier this year. There will also be appearances by Doug Hopwood of Tabor Community Services; Maj. Kyle N. Brown, an ordained Orthodox Presbyterian minister and chaplain of the 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team out of Horsham; and Sen. Scott Martin and other politicians. Additionally, a representative of the Liberty Warbird Association will give an update on the restoration of Huey 823, one of a fleet of thousands of UH-1H helicopters that were used during the Vietnam conflict. Huey 823 took its first flights in recent history in August. Attendees may stay afterward to socialize and to look at the displays. There is no cost to attend, and everyone is welcome, regardless of whether they served in the military. “Stop in and start your Christmas shopping and purchase something unique for someone special,â€? encouraged Mary Dale, inviting the community to visit the fourth annual Christmas art and craft market and silent auction that Lampeter United Methodist Church (UMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, will host on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. “There (will be) something available in all price ranges.â€? Held to benefit the congregation’s mission program, the event will also feature youths who will be raising money for their summer mission trip by offering face painting for a small fee. In addition to the young artists, the market will include artwork by Carol H. Dale and Yen Elizabeth Keener, awardwinning members of the Lancaster County Art Association. They will sell originals as well as prints and other items showcasing their skills. Back for his third year, Bill Musser will sell his wood specialties, including wooden bowls, benches, candle holders, and more. An artisan of stained glass will offer Nativity scenes and additional figures along with ornaments and other stained glass items. This year’s market will feature several vendors selling jewelry, and no two are alike, Mary said. A fiber artist will sell mittens, scarves, sweaters, and more. Other vendors will offer handmade aprons, tea towels, handmade natural soaps and salves, a line of men’s products, painted slates, and more. A cafĂŠ sponsored by the United Methodist Women group will be open for breakfast and lunch. Mary noted that the breakfast sandwiches are typically a big hit. professional and district superintendent Mike Leichliter will be on hand to answer questions. Glock-Cornman estimated that the last time the classrooms in the ag wing were remodeled was sometime in the 1990s. Much of the shop equipment is that old. The new facility will be fitted with up-to-date equipment, and the ag department will be neighbors with the science and technology departments. “Ag has always been on the cusp of tech development,” Glock-Cornman said. “We try to bring in industry-level tech so students are prepared to use it in their careers.” The new facility will be able to accommodate more students, something Alyssa, chapter secretary Cody Hurlburt, and sentinel Darby Conrad are excited about. “With a new, bigger shop, more kids will want to do it,” Cody said. “I wanted to take (Intro to Mechanics) this year, but every single block was filled to the max,” Alyssa lamented.

Parliamentarian Mike Brumbaugh will have graduated by the time the new facility opens. “I won’t experience it, but I’m excited for my brother coming up (who will),” he said. Manor FFA and the ag department are inextricably linked. Glock-Cornman related that three years ago, the state set down a mandate that any student enrolled in an agriculture class is an FFA member by default. As a result, the leadership and career development opportunities offered through FFA are now available to more students. “I developed time management skills by balancing work, school, FFA, and my time and money,” Alyssa said. “You learn more real world things in your ag classes (and FFA). They set you up well for the future.” “FFA taught me different options in the world,” added Darby, who is pursuing a career in rodeo. “It got me to be more open than just my rodeo mindset. I discovered that I like animals other than horses.” Reservations for the meal at the rally are requested by Thursday, Nov. 1. LHOP Dedicates Veterans Barracks The Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) has announced the completion of the Lancaster Veterans Barracks, a first-of-its-kind home dedicated for veterans who are part of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas Veterans Court Program. A ceremony marking the completion and opening of the Barracks was held on Sept. 20 at the renovated home at 455 Fremont St., Lancaster. Retired Maj. Gen. Eric Weller, Deputy Adjutant General - Veterans Affairs, served as the guest speaker. Commander James Vollrath of the American Legion, Department of Pennsylvania, was also in attendance. Vollrath is a member of Lancaster Post 34 and a volunteer with Veterans Court Community Partnership, of which the post is a part. Other local dignitaries and politicians attended, including Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace. Preparation of the Lancaster Veterans Barracks project began in September 2017 when LHOP purchased a condemned and blighted house on Fremont Street from the Lancaster City Redevelopment Authority for a discounted fee. Working with veterans in the court program and community members, CAPital Workforce, a program of the Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lan-

caster County, completed the rehab work on the home. The total cost of acquisition and rehab was nearly $100,000, and a total of $150,000 was raised through cash and inkind contributions of labor and materials. The remainder of funds will be held in reserve to take care of future major systems repairs and replacements. The Barracks will be owned by LHOP, managed by a professional landlord, and administered within the rules of the Veterans Court program. Resident participants will be required to pay a monthly fee while living in the house to help cover costs. “We at LHOP are extremely proud to be a part of a project that will help our veterans get back on their feet after serving our country,” said LHOP CEO Ray D’Agostino, himself a veteran. “We and our partners, the Veterans Court Community Partnership and CAPital Workforce, are humbled by the many in-kind and financial donors as well as those who donated their time and talents in making A ceremony on Sept. 20 officially opened the Lancaster Veterans this project a reality.” Veterans Court began six years ago as a Barracks, a home for persons who are part of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas Veterans Court Program. The home is way to give veterans in the criminal justice owned and was renovated by Lancaster Housing Opportunity system who are charged with certain crimes individualized treatment programs Partnership, with assistance from veterans and local organizations.

There were books in every closet, every cabinet, under every bed. She always wanted to know what we were reading, even when we grandkids were all grown up.” To Gilbert, the book donations are a small way to honor her grandmother and to remember her inclusive love. “I’ve heard it said that when a person dies, so does a library. It’s beautiful that her library is going to live on,” she said. The books will benefit Hambright students for years to come, said Melissa Mealy, the school’s assistant principal. “There are some great titles that I know kids are already excited to get their hands on,” she said. “Creating a culture of readers starts with a passion for literature like that of Ms. Gilbert and her grandmother. This is such a wonderful way for Ms. Gilbert to honor her grandmother.”

The late Mary McReynolds was a children’s librarian in Lithonia, Ga., so on the morning after her death, Gilbert went to the Hambright library to be close to some of her grandmother’s favorite books, including “The Napping House,” “Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?” and “Anne of Green Gables.” As a positive intention during Gilbert’s grieving process, Hambright librarian Tara Etzweiler suggested that she purchase a book in memory of her grandmother, and Gilbert seized the opportunity. “Tara had a list of books on her wish list, and the more I purchased, the more I found that I knew children would want to read,” Gilbert said. McReynolds was committed to ensuring that all types of students were represented in books, so Gilbert purchased graphic novels, picture books, nonfiction, poetry, and fantasy titles. “It was easy to find incredible stories featuring diverse characters,” she said. So far, nearly 50 titles have been added to the collection. Community Closet Thrift Store volunteer Kyle Harris (left) shared a laugh with Excentia support staff member Sharyn Lesher while polishing the silver that had been donated to the Quarryville shop. A number of special sales and events are planned at the store in November and December. The perks of volunteering include a catered Christmas breakfast on the first day of December, a birthday gift, a 50 percent discount on days worked at the store, and gift cards to local merchants on Thanksgiving and candy or flowers for Christmas. “We love our volunteers. They make things go for us,” said Neil Uniacke, executive director of the thrift store’s parent organization, New Hope Community Life Ministry. “There are very nice people here,” agreed Kyle Harris, who has chosen to volunteer at the Community Closet as part of the Out and About program offered by Excentia. He likes to help people bring in donations, and working at the thrift store

has helped him to develop job skills. The proceeds from the Community Closet support New Hope Community Life Ministry, Uniacke explained. The ministry, headquartered at 248-A Maple Ave., Quarryville, offers Christ-centered mental health counseling by licensed professionals. New Hope also hosts the Strengthening Families program and ensures that the emergency clothing closet is stocked to meet the needs of clients of Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. On those days, every item with a colored tag will be 50 percent off for everyone without regard to age. Dec. 7 will also be the date of the Christmas tree lighting in TownsEdge. The store will offer complimentary bottled water, cookies, and hot chocolate to shoppers during the event. Since the Community Closet runs on donations, the store inventory is constantly changing. To encourage folks to explore the racks, Tyson has planned to hide a specific item in the store on Nov. 23, Dec. 7, and Dec. 21. The first three persons to find the item each day will receive a $50 gift certificate to the store. Looking ahead to 2019, Tyson announced that the annual fashion show has been set for Saturday, April 6. She invites readers to reserve the date, and more information will come later. The models who appear in the fashion show are store volunteers. The need for new volunteers is continual.

On Saturday, Nov. 3, the Club 42 series will present New York City trombonistvocalist Seth Weaver and the Seth Weaver Quartet, which includes Sharik Hasan, piano; Timothy Norton, bass; and Nathan Ellman-Bell, drums. Doors to the club will open at 7 p.m., and the concert will begin

Along with his original compositions, Weaver will also feature music from Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, and others. As part of Weaver’s visit to Millersville University (MU), he will join the MU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab bands, directed respectively by professors Keith Wiley and Ryan Kauffman, in Jazz at the ‘Ville November Nostalgia on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Biemesderfer Concert Hall, located at the Winter Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Weaver will also offer several master classes and rehearse his own compositions and arrangements in preparation for the Friday night concert

with the students. The MU Jazz Ensemble (MUJE) is composed of 18 to 20 players based on a big band instrumentation. Members are chosen by audition each fall. The MUJE performs both on and off campus each semester, featuring a repertoire that includes classic swing, jazz standards, and contemporary fusion styles. The MU Jazz Lab Band is an ensemble of flexible instrumentation - woodwinds, brass, strings, piano, bass, drums, and guitar - that accommodates a wide range of student experience levels. a decent fight against the one loss Panthers. “We went down fighting with a strong effort, but Central York is the better team this year,” said head coach Tim Joyce. “We did our best to disrupt their offense with strong serving, and I think we were successful with that. However, their defense was insuperable,” he added. “They were getting at least two good touches on everything. We threw everything at them that we had, but they handled it. “I’m proud of how my girls battled,” Joyce continued. “They never gave up, they never got down, and they never stopped fighting together.” Behind 13 kills by Jenna Arganbright, the hosts swept the Comets 25-13, 25-12, 25-19. Shayna Warfel turned in a solid game, leading with 16 digs, 7 kills and one block. Kailey Stoner directed the offense with 7 assists while Jordan Schucker and Marilyn Keernick each served up two aces. For their efforts all season, three Comets received all-star recognition. Warfel was voted to the First Team while Elizabeth Kubicar and Schucker were Second Team all-stars. GIRLS’ SOCCER While the girls’ soccer team ended the season with two tough losses (CV and MT) and an overall record of 2-13, head coach Jacob Marino was pleased with his team’s efforts. “Those were tough losses but the girls played great,” said Marino. “Kara Huber beat a defender and made an incredible shot that hit the crossbar and went in against CV. “The girls fought through a very tough season and our record is not an accurate picture of the team they are,” he continued. “We had no easy opponents or guaranteed wins on our schedule and there were some weeks where we had three games in a row against some of the best teams in the district. Now we need to regroup and start preparing for next year, which won’t we any easier in terms of the strength of our opponents,” Marino concluded. Meghan Greenwalt finished the season with three goals and one assist. Huber added two goals and three assists and Lily Sugra also netted two goals and assisted once.

out of 36 teams. “Graham ran an excellent race and we are proud of his accomplishment,” said co-head coach Tom Ecker. “He is very skilled at knowing what pace works best for him. He went through the mile in about 25th place, making us a little anxious. However he ran steady over the final two miles, picking off runners along the way.” The sophomore followed eight seniors to the finish line and will continue his season this weekend at the PIAA Championships in Hershey. Lou Lindsley, another sophomore, clocked a 17:41, finishing 37th overall, and improving last year’s 95th place time of 17:48. “Lou ran his best race of the year,” lauded Ecker. “He moved up steadily throughout the race, however, it was a little disappointing for him as he missed qualifying for states by 14 seconds.” Unfortunately, the rest of the Comets were over 100 runners behind Lindsley. Sophomore Max Kreiter was 140th (18:46), Jesse Kenagy, also a sophomore, was 191st (19:10), Jordan Photis followed at 213th (19:28) while seniors David Kramer (226th, 19:40) and Terry Dylan (229th, 19:40) rounded out the lineup. The girls’ squad, running the fifth race of the day, had just one runner in the top 100. Lauren Zink’s 21:45 was 25 seconds faster than last years’ time. The sophomore finished in 95th place, improving last year’s 131st place effort. Madi McKenna, a senior, followed in 123rd place (22:20) with sophomore Arden Morgan 25 seconds back in 141st place. Running fourth for the Comets was freshman golfer Keegan Dings (149th, 22:57) while Becky Kramer, who improved nine places over last year, was 175th with a 23:29. “The girls ran well,” stated Ecker, “but were a little burned out following their exceptional performance at the league meet.” VOLLEYBALL After bowing out of the opening round of the L-L League playoffs, the volleyball team had one week to prepare for the District 3 which got underway this past Saturday afternoon against No. 3 Central York (121). While the Comets, making their first district appearance since 2012, came in as the 14th seed, they put up

Millersville University’s Dr. Duane Hagelgans, associate professor of emergency management, was awarded two grants by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the Blue Rock Regional Fire District. The grants total nearly $500,000 and will be allocated to acquire new equipment, recruit new members, and retain firefighters for Blue Rock’s all-volunteer fire company. The first grant, the American Firefighter Grant, worth $329,000, will be used to replace Blue Rock’s outdated

self-contained breathing apparatus. The self-contained breathing apparatus allows the volunteer firefighters to enter hazardous environments for both lifesaving and firefighting operations. The second grant is a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant from FEMA worth $129,000. The SAFER grant will be used to retain members and increase recruitment efforts among the Blue Rock volunteer firefighters. The grant will help with initiatives to

recruit new volunteers, while also providing incentives to retain current volunteers. For more than 30 years, Hagelgans has been involved in emergency services. After retiring from the City of Lancaster, Bureau of Fire in 2011, he became the fire commissioner for Blue Rock Regional Fire District, which protects Millersville borough and the surrounding Manor Township. He is also currently the emergency management coordinator of the regional emergency management zone in

Disaster COBYS Holds Fundraiser Relief Auction Held The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, held at the Lebanon Expo and Fairgrounds on Sept. 21 and 22, concluded with an estimated preliminary total of $420,306. Some of the highlights include the following: a Landis Myers table sold three times to bring in $4,000; two quilts, “Have a Little Faith” and “Diamond Lite,” were resold for a total of $7,200; a theme basket, “A House Divided,” sold for $560; a copper kettle sold for $400 and a Trek bike for $370 in the pole barn auction; two gold coins sold for $2,600 each in the coin auction; contributions and matching funds totaled $110,000; baked goods sales totaled $10,000; contributions and donations, including an earlier bequest, exceeded $110,000; matching funds totaled $25,000; quilt sales totaled $33,000; and food sales generated nearly $34,000. The auction, the largest of its type in the world, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year.

Millersville Borough and Manor Township. Hagelgans holds an associate degree in fire science technology from Harrisburg Area Community College, a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety from Millersville University, and a juris doctorate degree from Widener University School of Law. He teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in emergency management at Millersville through the Center for Disaster Research and Education. $6,000. The auction generated $4,921. Top fundraisers were Mari Cunningham of West Lampeter Township, $12,525; Floy Fitzkee, Manheim, $6,685; Londa Brandt, Manheim, $5,810; and Lucy de Perrot, Lititz, $3,900. Four Church of the Brethren youth groups earned gym and pizza nights by raising at least $1,500. They included Little Swatara, Rehrersburg, $10,462; Mohrsville, $5,031; Mountville, $1,972; and West Green Tree, Elizabethtown, $1,556. Motivated by Christian faith, COBYS aims to educate, support, and empower children and adults to reach their full potential. COBYS carries out this mission through foster care and adoption services, counseling, and family life education.

The 22nd annual COBYS Bike and Hike took place on Sept. 9 in downtown Lititz. The event drew more than 200 supporters and donors, and a new income record of more than $141,000 was raised for COBYS ministries. The increase in income marked the 20th consecutive year of growth for COBYS’ signature fundraiser. Since its inception, the Bike and Hike has raised more than $1.4 million for COBYS ministries. In addition to the walk, the event usually includes two bicycle rides and a motorcycle ride, all staged from the pavilion at the Lititz Church of the Brethren.

The rides were canceled due to a flood advisory, and the event was moved inside to the church fellowship hall. A number of would-be riders walked instead or came to donate and pick up a Tshirt. In addition to 210 walkers, many others stopped in for fellowship and ice cream or to bid on the silent auction that ran throughout the afternoon. Total attendance was estimated at 350. More than 100 businesses provided cash or in-kind donations of auction items, door prizes, or food and supplies. Cash sponsorships from businesses exceeded last year’s amount by $11,000 and the previous best by

Dairy Judging Team Competes Becker Completes Internship The Manor FFA Dairy Judging team recently competed in the Eastern States Exposition, also known as The Big E. The team qualified to compete at The Big E, which was held on Sept. 14 and 15, after placing second at the state competition. The team, consisting of Penn Manor students Laurel Barley, Alyssa Chalfant, Maddy Denlinger, and Austin Kolb, put in many practices and hours of studying before traveling to Massachusetts to compete. On Sept. 14, the team walked around the fairgrounds and explored the food stands and various shows and exhibits. On Sept. 15, the day of the competition, the team woke up at 5:30 a.m. in order to be at the Coliseum - where the competition took place - by 6:30 a.m. The competition consisted of a 40-question general knowledge test and 10 questions on a Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) paper. Then, contestants had to

judge four classes of calves, one class of yearlings, and one class of cows, and they also had to write and prepare reasons for two of these classes. After the judging aspect was completed, contestants presented their reasons to two different judges for evaluation. Lastly, there was a team event featuring a scenario that focused on housing facilities of cows and calves, and the contestants had to evaluate how the farmer housed his cows and calves and present their findings to a judge. That night, there was a banquet for all of the teams, during which the results of the competitions were shared. The Manor FFA Dairy Judging team placed third as a team, with Austin Kolb winning first place as an individual and Alyssa Chalfant placing sixth as an individual. Austin also obtained an award for being the highest-placing individual for the Brown Swiss Breed.

Reading levels are now listed by age, grade and Lexile level. Customers may click on the award and see additional awardwinning titles and their availability. Lexile Measure is a method used by schools to measure a student reader’s ability. In 2013, Rutter’s funds were used to develop the Lancaster County Libraries Mobile App, which is another popular resource for library users to access the online catalog and other electronic resources from their mobile devices. During the past several years, Rutter funded the public libraries’ e-book collection that is accessible online to all Lancaster County residents who have a library card.

Donna Becker (left) facilitated a summer reading program for children at Habecker Mennonite Church as part of an internship through her studies at Eastern Mennonite Seminary. Donna Becker began studies with Eastern Mennonite Seminary in 2015. As a requirement for graduation, Becker needed a cross-cultural experience. Having explored a variety of international options, she was encouraged to look at some local options. Sherrie Ober, Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) personnel placement coach, was able to connect Becker with Habecker Mennonite Church. From May to August, she served the congregation as a refugee ministry intern with EMM. The congregation traces its roots to 1724, when Mennonites purchased a tract of land from the sons of William Penn. For nearly three centuries, it was a community of parishioners with European heritage. In 2008, the church decided to support a Karen refugee family. The hospitality of those church members brought more Karen families to the church, as the Karen and other ethnic groups were forced to flee Burma

(also known as Myanmar) due to persecution. Currently, Karen people make up three-quarters of Habecker Mennonite Church’s membership. The church uses both the Karen and English languages during worship services. Through the internship, Becker got to know many of the Karen church members, who she noted displayed joy and worshiped God during many occasions of their lives. She also pointed out that seeking refuge in a new place is a significant part of the Mennonite story, as hundreds of years of religious persecution led Anabaptists to find refuge in places like Pennsylvania. Becker and her husband began attending New Danville Mennonite Church earlier this year. A second-career seminary student, Becker is finishing a Master of Divinity program at Eastern Mennonite Seminary’s Lancaster Campus.

The Heinamans followed up with the pediatric cardiologist two weeks later for testing. This time, doctors could see what was wrong with Tyler’s heart. Tyler was born with a condition called coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. His heart defect was severe, and he needed surgery to correct it right away. He was flown to Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., where he received surgery five days later.
