Look To The Costume Shop For Last-Minute Halloween Rentals he Costume Shop at Millersville University (MU) is known for renting outfits and accessories for dramatic productions and private parties. Lately, however, it also has been selling items, with its most recent sale slated for Oct. 24. “We’re just clearing out some space,� said assistant manager Nick Blair, noting that the sales give the shop opportunities to cull items that have not been rented in a long time or may be nearing the ends of their lives.

Lest anyone be afraid they missed out on the perfect costume, the items that have been sold are just a drop in the bucket of the shop’s inventory, leaving plenty of options for last-minute Halloween rentals. “ We have upwards of 30,000 costumes, just by counting the hangers in the shop,� Blair said.

MU entered the world of costume rental in 1982, and The Costume Shop has been managed by Priscilla Kaufhold since 1984. MU students

assist in running the venue. The collection of garments and accessories has grown to fill five rooms on the lower level of MU’s Jefferson Hall, 164 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The collection is organized by theme, with the main room packed full of clothing representing many time periods and a second room dedicated to fantasy and occupations. A broad range of sizes are available, Blair said, claiming that the shop has something to fit everybody.

Blair has not noted any particular trend in styles rented for Halloween, but part of that is due to decreased rentals. With fewer festivities and decreased operating hours, The Costume Shop has not been as busy as usual. At the beginning of the year, pre-shutdown, 1920s costumes, such as gangsters and flappers, were popular because people were hosting themed parties in honor of 2020, Blair said. This time of year, Renaissance Faire outfits are popular. “If you don’t know what you’re looking for, it’s the perfect place to come and figure it out, and if you

For safety, customers are asked to wear masks during their visits. Costumes are steamed after they are tried on, and rented pieces are washed or dry cleaned, as appropriate, after they are returned. Costumes are lent by the week for a flat fee, which includes cleaning costs, and a security deposit that is refunded when the costume is returned.

Trick-or-treating will proceed as scheduled on Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Lancaster city.

Those who choose to take part in traditional trick-ortreating are doing so at their own risk and should understand how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 before participating.

While trick-or-treating will be permitted, the City of Lancaster encourages families to consider lowerrisk activities as an alternative to traditional trick-ortreating. Regardless of how individuals choose to celebrate Halloween this year, people should keep several things in mind. People should wear a cloth face covering while outside the home and around those they do not

live with. A costume mask is not an adequate substitute for a cloth mask unless it is made of two or more layers of breathable fabric, covers the mouth and nose and does not leave gaps around the face. A costume mask should not be worn over a protective cloth mask. This can be dangerous if the costume mask makes it hard to breathe. Instead, people should consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.

Individuals should maintain six feet or more of distance from people they do not live with, especially while talking, eating, drinking, or singing. Individuals should avoid places where they cannot maintain six feet or more of distance from people they do not live with. People should wash their hands or use sanitizer often. Frequently touched items should be cleaned regularly. Individuals who are sick or have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19 should stay home.

would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond.

Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith.

A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

There are plenty of topics upon which to disagree today, but a group of Lancaster-area churches wants to do things differently.

“We really feel like now’s the time for the Church to come together to build relationships,” said Matt Kroll, pastor at Lord’s House of Prayer and a founding member of Lancaster United Pastors. “Lancaster needs to hear the Church’s voice - not a

church. The Church. This is a time when our community needs to hear hope.”

Kroll and the other Lancaster United Pastors - Ray Harris of In the Light Ministries, Rick Rutter of Crossroads Mennonite Church, and Jose Jimenez of Activ8 Church - have rallied a dozen other congregations representing a variety of denominations to present Love in Action - Lancaster Community Outreach. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lancast-

At the event, the churches of Lancaster, along with Blessings of Hope and the Lancaster Barnstormers, will distribute free 40-pound boxes of food to anyone who asks. Kroll noted that the boxes will not be identical, but they will contain fresh and nonperishable foods and should feed a family of four for up to three days.

At the stadium, there will be separate locations where recipients can walk up or drive through to collect boxes.

Volunteers will line the routes and hold signs with messages intended to encourage attendees. Additional individuals will be available to meet with anyone who would like to receive prayer.

“We recognize a lot of people are discouraged and fearful,” Kroll said. “We want to be a light.”

While the boxes will be free of charge to recipients, they do have a cost. The churches have set a goal to raise at least $10,500 in order to purchase 1,500 boxes of food. Kroll

She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018.

Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna.

Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often.

When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school.

She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She

Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County.

While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said.

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971.

Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey.

The proceeds from the event will support New Hope Community Life Ministry, 248-A Maple Ave., Quarryville. Executive director Deb Riddell shared that for a long time, the nonprofit counseling center has had an annual fall banquet that has traditionally taken the form of a dinner and a program. An offering was accepted to benefit New Hope. This year, the format of the banquet was changed to accommodate COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Instead of a program, diners will receive a booklet with information about New Hope and the event sponsors. And rather than a freewill offering, a price has been set for the tickets.

The Community Closet thrift store, 128 TownsEdge Drive, Quarryville, generates revenue to support New Hope. Like many other businesses, it remained inoperational between March 16 and June 3. “Since the thrift store was closed for over 11 weeks due to COVID, that greatly impacted our budget,” Riddell said.

Although income has been down, Riddell is planning for growth. She has been working with a SCORE LancasterLebanon mentor to strengthen New Hope and enable it to serve counseling clients for years to come. Riddell is currently seeking to hire a counseling supervisor who will promote therapy and support the other counselors who work at New Hope. “The position is listed several places,” Riddell said. “I’m waiting (for the right person). God’s time is not always our time.”

The Lancaster Science Factory, 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, will host The Force Returns, its sixth annual event celebrating the science and characters of the Star Wars films, on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14 and 15. Visitors are encouraged to dress as their favorite Star Wars character.

Attendance will be limited to 30% capacity to help ensure the health and safety of visitors and performers.

Masks are required for all visitors over age 2.

On Nov. 14 from noon to 3 p.m., costume characters and droids from the Light Side will be featured. Members of Capital City Jedi Knights, Ghost Base, Mandalorian Mercs, Galactic Academy and the Mid-Atlantic Droid Builders will provide free photo opportunities at stations around the exhibit hall.

WSUCC Sets Food Drive, Giveaways

Feeding the hungry is one way that Willow Street United Church of Christ (WSUCC) members endeavor to live out the love of Jesus Christ. For several years, the congregation hosted monthly community meals free of charge until interrupted by the coronavirus shutdown. The meals restarted several months ago in the form of Hands of Hope food box giveaways.

The giveaways are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 4 to 6 p.m. or until the supply runs out.

Each box weighs approximately 40 pounds and includes an assortment of fresh and nonperishable foods. Nine households requested and received boxes at the first giveaway, and that number had grown

to 40 at the September giveaway.

“There are so many things we can’t do now, but this is something we’ve found a way to make work,” said WSUCC member Linda Overley.

“We’re hoping we will meet the needs of people who are food insecure.”

In addition to the Hands of Hope giveaways, WSUCC has held food drives for local food banks. An unadvertised drive a few weeks ago resulted in a pickup truck half full of nonperishable food, Overley shared. Another food drive is planned for Friday, Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. “We’re trying to fill a truckload,” Overley said. “Our joy would be to fill two trucks.”

The church hosted regular food drives at Darrenkamp’s at Willow Valley for at least five years before the store closed. “We always did a Thanksgiving and Christmas food drive, as well as drives in June, July, and August, while kids are out of school,” Overley said. “The community has always been very generous.”

This is the third chicken barbecue New Danville will host this year, which is a change for the organization.

“Most of our fundraising comes from our rental hall, but being that COVID hit this year, we had a 90% cancellation rate due to the size of the groups,” Thomas said. “We normally do two boot drives a

year. The one in April was canceled, but we might do one in November.”

At the start of 2021, the Pequea Township Police Department will begin its five-year lease of the reception hall, which will provide the fire company with a consistent income. Some fundraising events will continue, though, to ensure that the fire company is in a good financial position, Thomas noted. Plus, apparatus will need to be replaced eventually. A 1996 rescue was retired in December 2019, but a 1991 tanker is still part of the fleet.

New Danville Fire Company is 100% volunteer, and new

members are always welcome.

Anyone interested in joining the fire company in any capacity - firefighting, administrative, maintenance, and more - is invited to stop by the station any Monday evening, when the fire company hosts trainings and meetings. The activities typically get started at 7 p.m., but there is usually someone there between 6:30 and 10 p.m. who can meet with newcomers, Thomas said.

Amidst all the changes this year, at least one event has stayed the same. Mostly.

“The big difference is we’re offering curbside unloading. There’s no need to exit their vehicle,” said Dan Henry, speaking about the Operation Christmas Child collection event that will be held from Monday, Nov. 16, to Monday, Nov. 23, at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road (Route 372), Quarryville.

This is the congregation’s 12th year as a collection site. Each year, church and community members have typically dropped off about 2,000 shoebox-type containers filled with gifts of toys and hygiene items for children. “That’s over 20,000 boxes,” Henry said.

“We’re excited at Middle Octorara because we have a new pastor (John Barlow), and his wife, (Kim), has been involved with Operation Christmas Child for many years. She brings some new excitement to the collection.”

It just so happened that Charlie’s Chicken had an opening in its schedule on Halloween, Saturday, Oct. 31, so after booking the small business to prepare the halfchickens, the fire company decided to play up the day.

“We’re trying to add a little something to give back to the kids,” said firefighter Mike Thomas, who coordinates much of the fire company’s fundraising efforts. Children who come through the chicken pickup line on Oct. 31 will receive candy.

According to Samaritan’s Purse, which runs Operation Christmas Child, the shoebox gifts are distributed through local events to children who are affected by difficult circumstances. Ministry partners offer the 12-week discipleship program “The Greatest Gift” and develop longterm, caring relationships with children and their families who choose to participate. Mid Penn Bank Contributes $75,000 To PBCC Mid Penn Bank announced on Oct. 15 that it has contributed $75,000 to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC). PBCC is a statewide nonprofit organization designed to extend public awareness of breast cancer and to encourage increased public and private funding for research, legislative advocacy, and high-quality screening, diagnosis and treatment.

In previous years, Mid Penn Bank has held its Celebrity Golf Tournament for Charity as the means for raising funds to support breast cancer research and patient support. This year, the event did not take place in its normal form, due to guidelines and recommendations for social gatherings in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
