Promise Players To Stage “Don’t Kick The Turkeys” By Dayna M. Reidenouer
A church so stuck in its ways that only news of the new pastor’s impending death can get its members to change - if that story sounds familiar, it is because it is. “This is the fourth time we’re doing it,” said Doreen Creighton, founder of Promise Players, a Christian theater group, and director of the group’s next production, “Don’t Kick the Turkeys.” “It’s our most requested play.” The story is also reminiscent of reallife churches that struggle with loyalty to tradition and a reluctance to change. “We love our church. Everything is wonderful,” quipped Tim Strawser, speaking as his character in the play. “The only thing that changes is the pastors,” added actor Wayne Rhinier. The play addresses a number of themes, including prejudice, control
issues, jumping to conclusions, and how to help others. “I’ve heard a pastor say he could do four sermons on the play alone,” said actor Ken Hess. Although there is a serious message in the play, it addresses problems in the church in a humorous way. “It’s a little over the top with some of the characters, but not too far,” Creighton commented. “It is just a funny play.” Promise Players presented “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” which was written by Andy and Jennifer Hansen, in 2001, 2004, and 2011. Many of the actors in the upcoming production also appeared in the previous productions. Reflecting on the contrasts between the 2001 and 2019 productions, actress Julie Beittel remarked, “(My character) is really different. The first time, I played her as a caricature, but now she’s more real. I see ways that I’m like her.” “We were in our 30s or 40s then,” See Promise Players pg 3
Promise Players will present “Don’t Kick the Turkeys,” a comedy about a church community, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren on Nov. 1 to 3 and 7 to 10.
Oscar Winner’s Mother History Conference To Explore To Speak At Sisterhood Event Native American, European Life By Dayna M. Reidenouer
If the name Dorothy Nyong’o sounds vaguely familiar, it is because her daughter Lupita Nyong’o is an Academy Award winner and the first Kenyan actress to win an Oscar. The other members of the Nyong’o family are accomplished individuals as well, and Dorothy will present “Parenting - The Power of Choice” as the guest of honor at the “Night of Galaxy” event hosted by the Fearfully and Wonderfully Made Sisterhood (FaWMs) on Friday, Nov. 1. The event will be a celebration of kinship and diversity by Kenyan women, and everyone is invited to attend, regardless of their race, color, See “Night Of Galaxy” pg 3
Dorothy Nyong’o, mother of Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (not pictured), will be the guest of honor at the “Night of Galaxy” event at Bent Creek Country Club on Nov. 1.
A weekend conference staged at two western Lancaster County historical societies will explore the relationships among American Indians and the first Europeans to settle, farm, and trade in central Pennsylvania in the 18th century. A variety of programs will be open to the public without charge. The conference will begin on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. with the Millersville Area Historical Society’s meeting at the Millersville municipal center, 100 Municipal Drive. Nicole Eustace, professor of history at New York University, will present a program titled “Murder and Mercy on the Susquehanna: Captain Civility of Conestoga Teaches Pennsylvania Colonists New Principles of Justice.” At 10:30 a.m., conference participants may enjoy a self-guided historical
driving tour to refresh their memories of the William Penn land area and the Native American use of that land. The tour was created by local historians Darvin Martin and Christine Brubaker. The tour will stop at notable sites along the Conestoga River and Indian Creek and conclude at the Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS), 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga, where lunch will be served. The tour will also include a stop at land owned by Brookfield Renewable Partners, which has public access and is a Lancaster County Historic Preservation Trust site. Brubaker, who organized the conference, is spearheading a movement to have the abandoned house and its surrounding land designated as a cultural and historic heritage park, with a proposed name of PennLogan Outdoor Education Center.
