In 1954, pastor Mark Chavez was baptized a month after his birth in Denver, Colo. His father, Arthur Chavez, was a devout Catholic whose parents had migrated from Spain to New Mexico. On the other hand, Mark’s mother, Viola, was a German Lutheran. “Both were stubborn,”

Penn Manor To Host Homecoming ixteen Penn Manor High School seniors are vying for the title of homecoming king and queen this year. Members of the homecoming court are raising money and collecting supplies for the Loft Community Partnership, which provides clothing, food, and household supplies to Penn Manor families in need. During homecoming week, Penn Manor will host Fall Fest from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, at Comet Field. Admission will be free, and the event will include food trucks, fireworks, cornhole, spike ball tournaments, bounce houses, children’s games, a DJ, and stands selling Four Diamonds merchandise. The homecoming king and queen will be crowned at halftime of Penn Manor’s homecoming football game against Cedar Crest on Friday, Oct. 22, at Millersville University’s Biemesderfer Stadium. On Saturday, Oct. 23, the homecoming dance will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on the top level of the high school parking garage. Avery Groff, Ella Kratz, Nicole
plans to attend Bloomsburg University and major in health sciences and psychology. Jesselin Lopez is the daughter of Jessica Ortiz and Will Lopez of Mountville. Jesselin is a member of the Scrubs Club, the Spike Ball Club, and Comet Nation. She plans to attend college. Devyn Mauger is the daughter of Robert and Rebecca Mauger of Pequea. Devyn is a member of the girls’ lacrosse team, Lanco Elite Travel Lacrosse, NHS, MiniTHON, and the varsity cheerleading squad. Devyn is also a junior coach for the Penn Manor Junior Comets and is a Comet Nation student representative. Devyn plans to attend Juniata College, where she will major in secondary math education and psychology and participate in athletics. Riley Peart is the daughter of Kevin and Megan Peart of Lancaster. Riley is a member of the Student Ambassadors, NHS, Mini-THON, Student Council, and Comet Nation. She also plays on the basketball team. After high school, Riley plans to attend a university and major in biochemistry and public health. See Homecoming pg 5

With a theme of “Reunited and It Feels So Good,” the 74th Mardi Gras Halloween Parade will return to Columbia on Thursday, Oct. 28. The parade will step off at 7 p.m. from 10th and Manor streets before proceeding along the 1.5-mile route that will include blocks of Manor, Fourth, Union, Second, Locust and Sixth streets.

noted Mark. For the sake of the family, Arthur thought it was best to worship together, and knowing his wife wouldn’t budge, he asked his mother for her blessing to leave the Catholic church. According to Mark, Arthur’s mother was a devout Catholic. Growing up, Mark’s family spent every Sunday at his grandmother’s house. “There was a crucifix in every room in her huge house,” recalled Mark. Nevertheless, she gave Arthur her blessing. Mark was raised a Lutheran and eventually entered ordained ministry in the Lutheran church. In May of this year, he became the pastor at Reformation Lutheran Church, 2100 Manor Ridge Drive, Lancaster. However, he initially tried to avoid the call to ordained ministry by serving in the U.S. Air Force, which he joined in 1972. During his time in the Air Force, Mark was given a fellowship to study in Oxford, England. The only Lutheran congregation in Oxford consisted of a group of people who left Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Mark only attended church a few times. “I didn’t speak a word of German;

The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, which have announced that Robert A. Herman Jr. will serve as grand marshal. He and his wife, Sylvia, will lead the parade in a horse-drawn carriage. Five divisions will be featured in the parade, and attendees will be able to see high school marching bands, baton groups, Scout troops, floats, walking groups, fire companies and local businesses. A steam calliope will be the final unit, which has been a tradition for nearly 20 years. “Everyone loves a parade, and that’s especially true in Columbia,” said Paul Resch, vice president of the Lions Club. “People really look forward to both the Memorial Day parade and the Halloween parade. … We’re ready to put on an awesome parade this year, hopefully one of the biggest and best ever.” Resch noted that interest in the parade is higher than usual this year since the past three parades - two Memorial Day parades and one Halloween parade - have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year is believed to be the first year the Halloween parade was canceled in its history. Parade organizers are encouraging spectators to light up the parade route with their cell phone lights as a sign of unity and a tribute to all those affected by the coronavirus as the first division passes by. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories. John Grunden, Lions Club treasurer, explained that judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate entrants on their overall appearance and performance. This system helps ensure that parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to offer, including things that might have been missed if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area. Several nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route. For the safety of spectators, parade participants are reminded not to throw candy from floats, Resch said. Handing out candy along the curb line is permitted.
Columbia Borough Police have identified social distancing zones along the parade route that will be designated as no parking areas to allow spectators to spread out along the curb line and safely watch the parade. Municipal parking lots at 102 Locust St. and the 200 block of Avenue H will be open, and parking will be available from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 121 S. GOLF Five Comet golfers competed in the District Three Championships at Briarwood on Oct. 8 but only one qualified for states. Keegan Dings punched her ticket with a 163 two-day total, firing an 84 on Friday and a 79 one day later to finish in fourth place. “Keegan has been so close, so we were happy to get her through,” said head coach Tom Ruestle. Aidan Doyle (85) and JP Radwanski (88) both competed on Friday. “Jesse and JP are both freshman and our top two players,” Ruestle noted. “This exposure will pay dividends down the road. And Aiden is a junior and keeps improving. It was a great season, and we have high expectations moving forward.” BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY The boys’ cross country team moved to 5-5 on the year with wins over CV (23-37) and Elizabethtown (22-34) last Tuesday.
