Even after graduating, Millersville University students play an important role in the school’s community as alumni. The school has over 70,000 alumni, many of whom remain active in the area. “Alumni engagement is instrumental,” said Kristin Schab, director of alumni engagement at Millersville. “They’re the backbone of Millersville, and they serve as a hub for past, present and future students; it’s important for prospective students to see what a Marauder can do with their education.”

As a way to celebrate its alumni, Millersville University launched the Marvelous Marauders program, which allows anyone to nominate an alumnus from the school. Alumni from any graduating year may be nominated through an online form, which must include a professional summary of the nominee, such as a written biography, resume or LinkedIn profile. Up to two letters of support may be submitted as well, and the deadline for submission is Friday, Feb. 10, 2023. To nominate a graduate, visit www.millersville.edu /alumni/marvelous-marauders /index.php and click on nomination.

The program will recognize 40 Millersville graduates and what they’ve accomplished since completing their education. The number of honored graduates was picked to honor the 40th anniversary of Millersville State College becoming Millersville University of Pennsylvania in 1983. The school itself was established in 1855 as the Lancaster County Normal School and was the first normal school in Pennsylvania. It was renamed the Millersville State

Normal School in 1859 and became a state teachers’ college in 1927. It was renamed once more in 1959 to Millersville State College. Nominees may be those who graduated prior to the school’s officially becoming a university.

A selection committee of 10 voting members (consisting of eight alumni, one current student and one campus partner) will sift through the nominations and select the alumni to be featured. “We thought this

would be a fun program that would not only pay tribute to the university, but also serve as a way to recognize the good work our Marauders are doing,” said Schab. “It’s a chance to see what everyone is up to. Our hope is that some of the winners will be able to provide opportunities and insight for current and prospective students.” The committee will look at anything from career achievements to community service to ways the alumnus has engaged

Millersville after graduating.

Once nominations are closed, the selection committee will finalize its choices and announce the winners in the spring or summer of 2023. Schab is currently working with Millersville University’s IT department to create an interactive online gallery that will showcase each of the selected alumni and his or her endeavors.

Mr. Suit Records, 118 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, announced via Instagram on Oct. 3 that it will permanently close its doors at the end of the year. The news was met by a chorus of cries from the community, with responses by everyone from now-internationally famous rockers to those who became acquainted with the store while studying in Lancaster.

The record store has operated in Lancaster for 15 years and was started by Mike Madrigale, who has run it ever since. Madrigale grew up

near Allentown, where he attended Kutztown University and combed through local hole-in-the-wall shops to find additions for his record collection. He moved to Lancaster, where his brother and sister-in-law lived, in 2000.

“I was always working in record stores. When I moved to Lancaster, I ended up being in food service for a while, which was fun, but I always wanted to open my own place,” said Madrigale. He found out through his brother, who owned an art gallery downtown, that a building had opened up. With his own collection, Madrigale seized the opportunity to open a store, and Mr. Suit was born.

“There was definitely a learning curve with finding what I wanted to carry and getting enough of it at one time, but within a few years I hit my stride,” said Madrigale. Mr. Suit wasn’t the only game in town;

Stan’s Records on Prince Street offered a collection of classic records, and Angry, Young & Poor on Orange Street has been a punk’s one-stop shop for vinyl and clothing since 1995. But Mr. Suit sold records you might not find at either, having music from more contemporary artists across dozens of genres.

Over the years, Madrigale connected with the Lancaster community both through Mr. Suit and his own musical endeavors. He performed and toured as a member of the post-hardcore outfit Sadaharu, which released several albums on CI Records, and later with garagepunk three-piece High Heels. Although Madrigale met several artists through CI Records and from performing at the Chameleon Club (Michael Kuhn of NAH and 1994! and JB Brubaker of August Burns Red were among the first to react to

the news of Mr. Suit’s closure), he also made an impact on hundreds of people who were either visiting Lancaster for the first time or lived locally and needed a certain record.

“I’m thrilled to have had any impact on anyone,” said Madrigale. “I live a couple blocks away and have been here for years. (Mr. Suit) is something for everybody and for the community.” From the parents who needed records for their kids’ ‘50s-themed prom to teenagers in the suburbs who trekked into town to find a new record on the weekends, Madrigale and his shop made an impact on many people’s lives.

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, a 15year anniversary event for Mr. Suit will be held at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. The event will feature live music and celebrate the legacy of Madrigale’s shop, which will continue to sell records during its regular hours until Saturday, Dec. 31. More details on the event will be announced on Mr. Suit’s Instagram, @mrsuitrecords, closer to its date.

So, stop in and grab one last record from Mr. Suit, and in Madrigale’s own words, “Let’s make the rest of the year less of a funeral and more of a party, OK?”

Organ Concert To Feature Works By Franck

The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will host nationally renowned, awardwinning organist Mark Laubach for a recital presenting the music of César Franck. The event will take place on Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Admission is free.

Franck, a French organist, composer, and pedagogue, was one of the most influential organ composers of all time, paving the way for other French composers. This December will mark the 200th anniversary of Franck’s birth.

At the concert, Laubach will perform some of Franck’s most difficult organ works on St. Anthony Church’s organ, which has a fullbodied sound that mimics that experienced by Franck. Laubach serves as organist and choirmaster at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral in Wilkes-Barre as well as professor of organ at Marywood College in suburban Scranton.

Sixteen Penn Manor High School seniors recently competed for the title of 2022 homecoming king or queen while raising money for Loft Community Partnership, which provides clothing, food and household supplies to Penn Manor families in need.

Mia Anger and Sean Hoffman were crowned queen and king, respectively, at halftime of Penn Manor’s homecoming football game against Daniel Boone Area High School on Oct. 7 at Millersville University’s Biemesderfer Stadium. In addition to Anger, the candidates for homecoming queen were Isabelle Kligge, Lauren Stoner, Reagan Webster, Allison Burkholder, Annaliese Mann, Liv Cox and Carly Keene. In addition to Hoffman, the king candidates were Andrew Forrest, Clark Wagstaff, Eli Warfel, Quay Hanna Jr., Jordan Martin, Noah Bolin and Tyler Hostetter.

Also during homecoming week, Penn Manor hosted a Fall Fest from 5 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 5 in the high school auxiliary gymnasium. The event featured a DJ, yard games, a bounce house, an obstacle course, face painting, bracelet-making and a small basket giveaway drawing.

Food was available for purchase from student-run stands and food trucks.

Prior to the homecoming football game, the school held an alumni open house, during which Penn Manor alumni and retired staff members and their families were invited to explore the newly renovated high school. All alumni in attendance received a free ticket to the football game. A Comet Tailgate, open to the community, was held on the high school’s turf area beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The homecoming dance was held on Oct. 8 in the high school cafeteria.

Students Eligible For Free Breakfast

Effective Oct. 3, all Penn Manor students will be eligible for free breakfasts under a state-funded Universal Free Breakfast initiative that will continue through the end of the 2022-23 school year.

This program does not include free lunches, and families are still encouraged to apply for free and reducedprice meal benefits to qualify for assistance.

By submitting an application, a child’s school may receive additional funding to improve nutrition and education programs. Applying for

free and reduced-price meals also can help families with fees for SAT and PSAT tests, college applications, Advanced Placement exams, and other expenses that may come up during a child’s high school career. Qualifying for free and reduced-price meals also means a family may qualify for additional NSLP benefits, such as a low-cost internet service.

To learn more about the application process, visit www.pennmanor.net and look under “Parents” for “Food Services Forms and Resources” or call the Penn Manor School District administrative office at 717-872-9500.

“True Likeness” is a traveling exhibition that originated at Davidson College in North Carolina, and it was curated by Lia Newman and Stanley during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During a time when everyone concealed their faces with masks, the curators asked the question, “What is a likeness?” The collection includes artwork that offers a wide range of answers to the question through mediums such as video, photography, painting, collage, installation, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. The show explores the concept of a likeness and seeks to demonstrate that it can be more than something or someone’s face value.

“One of the reasons this exhibition stood out to me is the diversity of artistic styles as well as the range of points of view shown by the artists,” said Heidi Leitzke, associate professor of art at Millersville University and director of the Eckert Art Gallery. “One thing I love about running the gallery is being able to bring art of national reputation to our campus so that students don’t have to travel to New York, Philadelphia or Washington, D.C., to see exceptional work.” Leitzke is the first full-time director of the Eckert Art Gallery, which runs three or four exhibitions per academic year. Due to the size of “True Likeness,” part of the exhibition will be installed in the Sykes Gallery in Breidenstine Hall on campus in addition to the Eckert Art Gallery.

“True Likeness” is sponsored by Jerry and Susan Eckert, after whom the gallery is named. The gallery was a part of the campus library until 2012, when it was renovated and moved to the Winter Center. Jerry served as Millersville University’s vice president of development

League

Monday, October 10, at Conestoga Valley High School, Catherine Rabatin wrapped up her fourth straight LancasterLebanon League Class 3A singles championship with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 win over No. 2 seed Kayla Kurtz, of Manheim Township. The win capped another impressive run by the Comet senior who blanked McCaskey’s Lauren Snell in the second round and dominated No. 4 seed Jade Flores (CV) 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.

For her efforts this season, Rabatin, for the third time in her career, was named Section One Player of the Year. She is also a four-time League and Section all-star.

“We do believe that Catherine is the first ever four-time L-L League champ,” said head coach Amanda Pryzbylkowski.

“She went 13-0 during the regular season, losing only five games.”

Rabatin then joined team-

mate Erin Shipley in the doubles portion of the tournament. The top seeded duo shut out Johnson and Howard (EP) and then worked a 6-2, 6-4 win over Carson and Gregory (Hemp) to get Kurtz and Miller in the finals.

Township’s duo handed the Comets their first loss of the season, 6-3, 6-3, avenging a regular season loss.

“Their strategy was to keep the ball away from Catherine and blast shots at Erin,” said Pryzbylkowski. “Erin played so well and held her own. They just outplayed us this time. We beat them 8-5 in the regular season and that was one of closest matches we had all year,” she added.

FOOTBALL

After a disappointing result against Hempfield, the Comets regrouped, set the tone early, and went on to defeat Daniel Boone 33-12 on homecoming night, Friday, Oct. 7.

“There are a lot of distractions homecoming week,” said

head coach John Brubaker. “The team handled it well. They accomplished what we needed to do.”

Jonathan Osman (3 receptions for 65 yards) picked off Dean Rotter’s second pass of the game and returned the ball 34yards for a 7-0 lead just 20 seconds into the game.

Noah Bolin’s oneyard run in the second quarter made it 13-0. Bolin, who rushed for 108 yards, and Osman accounted for four of Manor’s five scores. He capped the scoring in the third quarter with a 60-yard burst, following Osman’s second score of the night - a 57yard pass play from Eli Warfel (9/17 for 157 yards) that pushed the lead to 26-6 at the half. Warfel also chipped in with a 4-yard keeper.

“Noah had a nice night,” said Brubaker. “And Jonathan is having a stellar season on both sides of the ball. Plus, our defensive line (Jordan Martin, Dhamir Wesley, Kyle Sullenberger and Sebastin Rivera) did a nice job up front and set the tone.”

Kyle Schmidtke led with 10 tackles. Wesley had 7 and Rivera added six with a sack. Sullenberger and Mike Evans also recorded sacks.

The Comet golfers continued post-season play at the District Three championships at Briarwood Golf Club Oct 7-8. Jesse Shue, JP Radwanski, Seb Elias and Aidan Doyle all competed but it was Shue that kept his season alive by qualifying for the PIAA Championships.

Shue fired a 77 on Friday, making the cut to day two where he finished with a 76 and a 153 total that left him tied for 15th and making the final cut for states. This will be his first state tournament appearance.

Radwanski opened with a 79 and followed with a 77, missing the cut for states by a mere three strokes.

Elias (81) and Doyle (91) did not qualify for the second day of the tournament.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Anouk Landgraff scored just her second goal of the season but it was a big one. Her goal, in the 21st minute, on a pass from Paityn Smith, stood as the game-winner in Penn Manor’s 1-0 non-section victory at Ephrata Friday, Oct. 7.

The Comets wrapped up the regular second Tuesday, Oct. 11 with a 3-0 home win over Hempfield, leaving Manor 6-4 in Section One. Carly Keene opened the scoring in the 19th minute while Izzy Kligge and Caroline Hinkle (1 ast) chipped in with second half scores. Smith and Emileigh Antesberger were also credited with assists while Allison Burkholder needed just five saves to record the shutout.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Coming off a 1-1 tie against Manheim Township, the Comets were hoping that momentum would lead to victories as the regular season came to a close. Unfortunately, they dropped a 5-2 final against Section Two champ Ephrata (11-1) on Oct. 7 before closing out the year with a 6-0 loss to Section One leader, Hempfield Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Manor fell behind 4-0 against the Mounts before Nicholas Menaquale found the back of the net in the 46th minute. Tyler Hostetter, the team’s leading scorer with five goals, and who assisted Menaquale, collected Manor’s final tally, leaving the Comets with a 3-12-1 overall record.

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross country teams competed in the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 8 but results were unavailable.

“We’re pretty sure Kaleb Kabakjian was seventh but we still haven’t received official results,” noted head coach Andrea Kramer. “The kids had a great time being in a big meet and it was a nice primer for leagues.”

VOLLEYBALL

The Comets found themselves in a couple of long matches over the last week, dropping a 3-1 result at Cedar Crest on Oct. 6 but rebounding with a 3-2 thriller over visiting Manheim Township on the 11th. The Comets had defeated both teams in three sets in their first meeting.

“Cedar Crest had a much better serving plan this time around and our unforced errors kept them close to us most of the night,” said head

coach Tim Joyce.

Manor dropped the first set 25-23 and the second 25-22 before earning a 25-22 third set win. The momentum did not carry over and Crest pulled away for a 25-16 win.

Cassidy McCollum led with 9 kills and 3 aces. Lezlie Nguyen (8 kills), Jillian Kloc (5 kills) Eliana Knaub (3 aces), Jordan Bailey (3 aces, 14 digs) and Janelle Bowmaster (16 digs) filled the stat sheets.

Against the Streaks, Manor came out strong, winning 2511, 25-19 but fell short in the next two, setting up the fifth and final set that the Comets pulled off, 15-11.

McCollum was strong at the net with 9 kills, Briana Lee added 3 blocks and Bailey, who recorded 30 digs, served up 3 aces. Knaub was credited with 36 assists as the Comets improved to 6-4 in section play.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team racked up a 6-0 rout at Hempfield on Oct. 6, and then posted a hard-fought 2-1 nod at CV Monday morning, before suffering a 1-0 defeat against Township on Wednesday in their last league matchup of the season, ending their 15 game winning streak.

Sports

Avery Bradburn scored the first goal, the last goal and dished out an assist in the win over Hempfield. E. Bustillo (1g, 1a), Chloe Hook (1g), Liv Cox (1g), Liz Bustillo (1g), Caity McGough (1a), Izzy Thatcher (1a) and Joelle Kroesen (1a) all contributed to the team victory. Adeline Arkhurst needed just three saves to preserve the shutout, Manor’s sixth of the season.

On the road again Monday,

the Comets fought off a 1-0 deficit with a pair of second half goals and swept the series against the Buckskins. McGough notched a third quarter tally on a penalty stroke while Bradburn got a stick on a reverse shot from Tristan Groff fourth quarter.

“The girls fought for a full 60 minutes,” said head coach Rachel Suter. “That is what really paid off.”

The loss to Township leaves both teams at 7-1.

Celebrating 75 Years Of Parades

The 75th annual Mardi Gras Halloween Parade will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, with a theme of “Back to the ’90s.” Parade participants and spectators are encouraged to wear costumes based on the theme.

“This year’s parade is shaping up to be one of the biggest in recent years,” said John Grunden, treasurer of the Columbia Lions Club. “We already have 10 more units registered than we did last year. It’s a great way for people to come together for an evening of fun with family and friends.”

The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and the Sunsnappers, a men’s service organization. It will form at 10th and Manor streets before proceeding along a 1.5-mile route that includes sections of Manor, South Fourth, Union, South Second, Locust and South Sixth streets.

The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division. The procession will also include high school marching bands, emergency response units, baton twirlers, Scout troops, fire companies, floats, walking groups, businesses and a steam calliope as the final entry. The

Marine Corps League of Lancaster County will collect toys and donations for the Toys for Tots program along the route, and people are invited to bring a toy to donate to this project.

Grunden noted that cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories and that the judges will roam the parade route to observe entries throughout the parade rather than only seeing a specific performance at a grandstand. Several nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route.

Jetty Gerfin will serve as grand marshal and will ride in a horse-drawn carriage at the front of the parade along with her son, Fred Gerfin.

“Jetty is someone who is always looking for ways to make life a little easier for friends, loved ones and anyone she meets,” said Paul Resch, president of the Columbia Lions Club. “She enjoys meeting new people, getting to know them personally and helping in

any way she can. On any given day, you’ll find her giving rides to friends who have appointments or picking up anyone who needs a ride to church.”

A lifelong Columbia resident, Jetty has volunteered with numerous organizations, including Meals on Wheels, the former Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center and St. James Lutheran Church, where she has served on the church council, as a member of the choir and as a Sunday school teacher. She has also volunteered with the Thunder on the River car show for many years.

Jetty was married to the late Fred “Itz” Gerfin for 37 years. She has two children, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

For more information or to register to participate in the parade, call John or Cheryl Grunden at 717-305-8348 or email parade@columbialions.org. Online registration is available at www.columbialions.org.

Apprentices

To Compete At National Event

The winners of the team competition were (from left) Jason Birdwell, Gavin Sangrey, Ryan Eberly, and Phillip Gregg.

epcclassifieds.com

Three ABC Keystone apprentices received top scores at the Keystone Chapter’s individual local craft competition on Oct. 1, which was held at the chapter’s state-of-the-art training facility in Manheim. This year, the competition also featured the chapter’s first-ever team competition designed to demonstrate safety along with craft interdependency and teamwork; simulate working conditions, where planning is critical to success; highlight individual leadership and workmanship skills as the project was assembled and completed; and encourage apprentices to work through problems as a team.

The top scorers will receive an allexpenses-paid trip to the upcoming ABC National Craft Competition (NCC) to be held from Wednesday, March 15, through Friday, March 17, 2023, in Kissimmee, Fla. At the NCC, they will compete against craftspeople

from ABC’s 68 chapters nationwide.

The local craft competition is made possible through the support of ABC Keystone Chapter members.

The competition was open to the public and was attended by family members and friends of the apprentices as well as the members of the Keystone Chapter, which provided the competitors the opportunity to compete in an environment replicating the experience of competing at ABC’s NCC. Competitors had to keep their focus on their craft and maintain strict attention to safety while working on projects that had been designed to test their practical and problem-solving skills.

The hands-on portion of the individual competition contributed to 75% of their total score and was judged by construction industry professionals. Individual competitors were not given details of their project

build prior to the event. Ahead of the practical trade skills competition, the apprentices were required to take a written test contributing to the remaining 25% of their total score.

During the written test, they proved their academic understanding and knowledge gained throughout their education program. To earn a spot at ABC Keystone’s individual local craft competition, apprentices had to rank within the top five of their trade class.

During the team competition, craft journey-level professionals worked in teams of four to complete a series of craft-specific tasks focused on electrical, plumbing, sheet metal/HVAC and carpentry in a six-hour period.

Team competitors were not required to take a written assessment. Teams were provided craft specifications and drawings no more than 24 hours before the event.

Each competitor received a Home Depot gift card for his or her participation. The first-place winner in each trade was given a Home Depot gift card and the trip to the NCC.

Chorus To Present Concert Promise Players Theater Group Posts Fall Play

The Gap Male Chorus will host a concert at Gospel Light Baptist Church, 129 Slackwater Road, Millersville, on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 6

p.m. The concert will consist of traditional hymns and spirituals.

more information, visit www.light4lancaster.com.

The Promise Players theater group will present “Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon” for its fall play at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 4 through 6, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 10 through 13. The Thursday and Friday shows will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. showing and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. showing.

The play follows the story of a small town 25 years after a bus accident killed the members of the local wrestling team and rattled the community. The majority of the show takes place in the Red Rocket Diner, named after the town’s sports team, where the audience gets to know the diner’s regulars: the waitresses competing to see who can convince a customer to order the strangest meal, the sheriff who stops in for his daily coffee and the discontented cook, Johnny, who dreams of escaping to the big city. When another tragedy strikes, the town’s residents and the regulars at the diner navigate the loss, and Johnny wrestles with his faith as he ruminates on life and

death during his daily task of serving up breakfast.

The Promise Players’ board of directors met in 2019 to research potential shows but had to put its schedule on hold due to the COVID19 pandemic. The Promise Players’ first show since the pandemic was “Smoke on the Mountain,” which was held over the summer at Rawlinsville Camp Meeting.

“‘Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon’ is about how faith helps us through difficult circumstances,” said Lanny Millette, the play’s director. “(The Promise Players) felt like there was a good faith message in it, and it still has a light-hearted nature. It’s a message people need to hear.” The organization’s goal is to stage performances that speak to life issues and illustrate what it means to be a Christian in today’s world. Actors are cast from across the county, and those who are not placed in acting roles often assist behind the scenes with things such as lighting, stage production and operating the box office.

For each play, the Promise Players has sponsored a different nonprofit and donated any profits made; in the last 27 years, it has donated over $250,000 between several organizations. “We want to make a difference in the community,” said Millette.

“Not only is it a great night of entertainment, but you support a good cause.” “Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon” will benefit The Factory Ministries’ youth ministry in Paradise.

Tickets for the show may be purchased via donation online or at the door. There is a suggested monetary donation for adults, and attendees may also donate a can of nonperishable food for admission, which will be given to the community food bank in East Lampeter.
