Ex-NFL Player To Speak At Agriculture Event

Penn Manor High School student Max Bushong, who apprentices at the school’s 1-to-1 student help desk, contributed a chapter to a book on opensource technology for educators. Not many high school students can boast that they are published authors, but Penn Manor High School sophomore Max Bushong can make that claim at age 15. Max wrote a chapter in the new book “The Open Organization Guide for Educators” about his experience as a help desk apprentice for the high

school’s 1-to-1 laptop program. The 241-page book was published in September by Red Hat, the world’s largest open-source software support company, to showcase open technology initiatives in education. Penn Manor’s 1-to-1 program, offered in grades four through 12, runs on Linux, a free open-source software See Student Perspective pg 8

At age 29, after four successful years with the Baltimore Ravens and three with the St. Louis Rams, center Jason Brown walked away from football and into an entirely unrelated career. Some people, when they retire, become “gentleman farmers,” with a few acres and a handful of cattle that they can manage with low stress and minimal effort. Jason and his wife, Tay, had a much bigger dream, and they bought a 1,000-acre farm in Louisburg, N.C. The one problem? Neither Jason nor Tay had experience farming. Just as he did with football skills, Jason turned to YouTube to learn what he needed to run a farm. “I grew up with a little bit of a green thumb, did a little bit of landscaping with my father, as far as planting shrubs and trees and flowers here and there, but doing it on a large scale? Jason explained in an episode of “Growing a Greener World” that was reposted at https://wisdomforlife.org/firstfruitsfarm. The Browns named their new property First Fruits Farm and pledged to give the best of each harvest to people in need in the community. In 2014, its first year of operation, the farm produced more than 120,000 pounds of sweet potatoes and more than 10,000 pounds of cucumbers. Since then, the farm has produced nearly 1 million pounds of food, and all of it has been donated to food pantries and churches. “We know we are giving our best. We are giving from the heart, and that’s what it’s all about,” Jason said. “In my football career, I was living a life of entertaining. Thompson noted that while the Lancaster Chamber no longer has a dedicated agriculture services department in order to serve all industries, it has continued to host the banquet because it honors the foundation of Lancaster County. “Celebrating agriculture is a big part of our community,” Thompson said. “We want to continue to recognize that ag is part of a large economic drive in the community.” People who want to be part of that celebration may purchase tickets to attend the banquet or sign up to be an event sponsor or table patron. Thompson requested that tickets be reserved by Friday, Nov. 8, but she will accommodate walk-ins at the event. Attire for the event will range from denim and flannel to suits and ties, and all will be welcome. State Rep. Bryan Cutler and state Sen. Scott Martin have announced that Martic Township will receive a grant of $250,000 from the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) to help in the rehabilitation of the Martic Forge Viaduct in Martic and Conestoga townships. The viaduct is a former railroad bridge repurposed for bicycles and pedestrians as part of the Enola Low Grade trail. Currently, the damaged viaduct leaves a gap in the trail, causing issues and delays for visitors. Once repaired, the bridge will feature a 24-foot-wide deck complete with reinforced concrete and a 5-foothigh railing. The approach to the deck will also be re-graded with fencing.

Max’s chapter focuses on working alongside Penn Manor’s technology staff to repair, update, and service student laptops as part of a help desk apprenticeship course implemented to support the 1-to-1 program. “The fact that my peers, teachers, and IT staff communicate and interact with me as if I worked for Penn Manor makes me feel like a valued and respected member of the school district,” Max wrote. “The feeling of achievement when I fix a laptop or solve a computing problem is immense. An ‘A’ on a history paper can never compare.” Charlie Reisinger, the district’s technology director, also wrote a chapter detailing how the 1-to-1 program has amplified student curiosity and learning freedom at Penn Manor. Reisinger was contacted by Red Hat to contribute a chapter, but thinking that it would be beneficial to include a student voice in the

book, he approached Max last spring about writing a chapter as well. Max’s chapter went through five drafts - with help from English teacher Courtney Harting, Penn Manor technology staff members, and Red Hat editors - before it was ready to be published. “I learned that it definitely takes a lot of time and effort to get everything down just right,” Max said. “I look back from the original document to this one, and it changed so much. I’m really pleased with how it turned out.” When the book came out, Max said, “It hit me that, wow, now I’m an author. Just to see your name in print, it’s a really cool experience at such a young age.” Max’s chapter is the only one in the book written by a high school student, Reisinger said. “Max offers an authentic, insightful, and honest view into the dayto-day world of the student help desk,” Reisinger commented. “He is a terrific technologist, and (he) writes with an authority and perspective well beyond his age. Without question, he has a bright future.”

The Fulton Theatre will team up with the Lancaster Public Library to continue the community impact of the Fulton Academy of Theatre. Both organizations’ missions share serving the greater Lancaster community through education, and this partnership will allow arts education, offered by the Fulton Theatre, to continue for students throughout Lancaster County and beyond. A need arose for the Fulton Academy of Theatre to find a new, temporary home, as the Fulton Theatre continues its expansion plans through its Breakout Campaign. The Fulton Academy’s fall semester will run on Saturdays from Oct. 19 through Dec. 7, followed by the winter semester, which will begin on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020. A designated pickup and drop-off area, staffed with Fulton staff members, will be located at the Cherry Street entrance to the library to ensure a seamless transition into this new temporary home for the Academy. The Fulton Theatre invites students in prekindergarten through grade 12 to experience theater with the Fulton through the Academy of Theatre. The Fulton’s professional teaching artist staff members are dedicated to working and growing in their art. The Fulton Theatre is an inclusive program for students of all abilities and needs. Resources will be provided for students who have medical and learning concerns or disabilities. Registration is open for the fall semester at www.theFulton.org. Rabatin Earns L-L League Singles Title by Mona Steinhauer

Comet freshman Catherine Rabatin advanced to the finals of the L-L League Flight 1 AAA Singles tournament with dominating performances on October 4-5. The top seed opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Olivia Hitz (Cedar Crest) and then settled for a 64, 6-1 win over Township’s Kayla Kurtz. In the semifinals, Rabatin handled fifth seed Scotty Reynolds (MT) 6-4, 6-0 to get to the finals opposite No. 2 seed Avery Palandjian (MT). That match was held Tuesday where Rabatin prevailed over the Township sophomore in a 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 thriller at Conestoga Valley. In doubles play, Rabatin partnered with Julie Ward. The duo, seeded 6th, fought their way through three matches to get to the finals. They cruised past Spot’s Muttik and Halsey, upset No. 3 seed Izzy Brown and Nora Holmes (L-S) 7-6 (2), 6-4, and then survived CV’s No. 2 seed McBride and Eby with a tiebreaker win, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5. In the finals Tuesday Rabatin and Ward faced Palandjian and Scotty Reynolds. The Comet freshman was denied a sweep as the Township duo pulled out a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (75) win. Competing at No. 4, Alayna Adams got past Elco’s Emily Light 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round but then dropped a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3 (10-7) result against Brielle Wheeler (McCaskey). The Comets also entered Adams and A Jachimowicz in Flight 3 doubles. The pair lost their opening round 8-2 against PV’s Kiersten Winey and C. Bragg. FIELD HOCKEY In the last regular week of the season, the field hockey team took care of business. Tuesday, Oct. 8, they posted a convincing 5-1 road win over Warwick. Anna May Barbusca scored twice in the first half, and also dished out two assists to spearhead the attack. Jasmine Miller also scored twice, once in each half, and Tianna Edwards capped the scoring with a goal in the 27th minute. The Comets, with a 24 shot, 14 corner attack, led 31 in the first half and scored four

unanswered goals to pull away. “If we keep working hard, I believe we can be competitive with our competitors,” said head coach Matt Soto. “I am encouraged by our focus during practice and games. We have had a few setbacks but our team continues to work hard on improving.” As of Oct. 9, the Comets were 9-2 and sitting one game behind CV (101). The Comets hosted the Bucks on Oct. 10, after the deadline for this article. BOYS’ SOCCER In non-league action Friday, Oct. 4, the Comets improved to 7-5-1 overall with a 1-0 final against Red Lion. Despite an 8-2 advantage in shots and

a 4-1 edge in corners, the Comets played even with the hosts through the first half and most of the second. But then, in the 75th minute, Jackson Hostetter found Sebastian Bookmiller for the game-winner. Peter Skiadas needed just two saves to preserve Manor’s third 1-0 shutout and fourth of the season. Hoping that momentum would carry into last week, the Comets hosted CV on Oct. 7, and, with two games left in the regular season, and districts around the corner, a must-win situation was in place. The Bucks, however, were vying for that opportunity as well and came away with a 2-1 win in overtime. “We needed to stick to our game plan and fulfill our responsibilities,” said head coach Paul Taylor. “The MT game is a must-win.”

CV broke in front midway through the first half and the Comets knotted the game with 5:34 left when Hostetter finished a feed from Doyle Ebersole. The Bucks, however, wasted little time in taking the lead for good as Andrew Wahba scored the game-winner just 34 seconds into the extra period. As of Oct. 9, the Comets sit in 18th place in the district power ranking. CV holds at 16 and Township falls in at 5th. VOLLEYBALL For the third time in four matches the volleyball team went a full five sets. But Friday, Oct. 4, they suffered their second 3-2 loss of the season, this one in a non-league match against Dallastown. The visitors jumped in front with a 25-14 first set. The Comets, behind Madison Henry’s 11 kills, roared back to take the second set 25-20 but Dallastown returned the favor, taking set three by the exact same score. Manor rose to the occasion and forced a fifth set with a 25-19 win but couldn’t maintain the momentum. The visitors prevailed 15-8. Jordan Schucker piloted the offense with 15 assists and was a standout on defense, recording 16 digs. Madison Trout added a pair of blocks and Lexington Sangrey chipped in with five aces. After a 3-1 loss to Elizabethtown on Monday, Oct. 7, the Comets found themselves in another five set match Tuesday night. This time they finished on top (21-25, 25-15, 18-25, 25-20, 15-7), avenging their 3-1, first half loss to Cedar Crest. Schucker put up 30 assists and served eight aces to spark the offense while Madddie Henry chipped in with a game-high 18 kills and also matched Sangrey with ten digs. Kailey Stoner, Alyssa Heagy and Sangrey recorded one block each. Against E-town the night before, Manor, behind Sangrey’s 11 kills, pulled out a 28-26 first set thriller but couldn’t maintain the momentum. The Section Two Bears rallied to win 25-21, 25-13, 25-14. Schucker recorded 20 assists, 18 digs and four aces while Stoner and Heagy added five blocks each.

GOLF At Briarwood West Golf Course Friday, Oct. 4, Keegan Dings and Amanda Wolf represented the Comets in the District Three Class 3A Championships. Dings carded a 78 on the par 71 course, finishing in a two-way tie for fifth place and advancing to the second day of competition. Joining her was teammate Amanda Wolf who opened with an 85. Day two however proved to be a bit tougher as the girls failed to reach

the cut to advance to the PIAA East Regional. Wolf finished 10th overall with a two day 167 total with Dings one stroke behind. The cut was 161. soccer team knew they had their work cut out for them on Oct. 7. The Bucks sit right behind the top team in Section One, Hempfield. The Comets had nothing to lose and it showed in a tightly contested 2-1 loss. CV not only scored in the seventh minute but took a 2-0 lead just three minutes after the break. The Comets kept at it and finally cut the lead in half on a goal by Meghan Greenwalt, set up by Kylee Hess, in the 77th minute. Unfortunately, time ran out on Manor’s upset bid. “Many of our losses can be attributed to getting behind early in each half or making a mistake or two at critical moments,” said head coach Keith Renner. “We have tried to focus on keeping our heads in the game for 80 minutes. Although we have not eliminated mistakes, we have reduced their occurrences which have kept us in our most recent games.” CROSS COUNTRY The harrier teams wrapped up the regular season Tuesday, Oct. 8 with a tri-meet at Ephrata. The girls’ squad, who came away without a win, saw their top place-winner, Abby Ames (12th, 21:51) follow a pack of six Manheim Township runners to the finish line. The Streaks won 15-53, as did the Mounts 16-41. Becky Kramer also cracked the top 15 with a 22:23, good for 14th place. “This was a challenging meet for the girls as we faced two strong squads,” said head coach Tom Ecker. “Injuries and a lack of depth prevented us from performing in a

competitive manner. We were pleased with the performance of our mid-pack runners (Grace Shirley, Grace Richey and Maria Onea) who have shown consistent improvement through the season.” Graham Thomas, with a winning time of 16:49, beat the field by 27 seconds but it wasn’t enough as the boys’ squad dropped a close 28-29 final to Ephrata and came up short 24-36 against the Streaks. Lou Lindsley, in 5th place overall with a 17:33, was second for the Comets while Jeremiah Hetrick followed with an 18:02, good for ninth place and ahead of Ephrata’s third and fourth runners. Jordan Photis followed with a 15th place effort in 18:27. “We were pleased with the performance of team captain Graham Thomas who returned from an early season injury,” noted Ecker. “Senior Brady Lehman closed out his final regular season with a strong performance, running 19:02.” On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Comets turned in a handful of solid performances at the Gettysburg Invitational. Both squads finished in 13th place with the girls competing against 24 teams and the boys 30. “We had excellent races from Becky Kramer (21:39), Arden Morgan (21:55), and freshman Gracy Richey (25:01),” said Ecker. “They all showed significant improvements in race times.” Top finishers for the boys included Thomas (7 th, 16:35) and Lindsley

FOOTBALL Cedar Crest quarterback Chris Danz was 13-for-21 for 256 yards and visiting Penn Manor turned the ball over five times on Friday, Oct. 4. Both stats were crucial in the Falcon’s 37-10 homecoming win over the Comets. Despite the loss, Manor put the first points on the board with a 28-yard field goal by Aaron Gale. Cedar Crest answered just five plays later when Danz hit Cole Miller for a 55-yard touchdown run. The Falcons went on to score three more times before the Comets found the end zone. “We were a bit of Jeckyl and Hyde,” said head coach John Brubaker. “We stopped a great back (Tyler Cruz) but then we gave up two long pass plays and an interception that they returned pretty far. I thought we played hard but we gave up some key plays.” Up 20-3 at the half, the Falcons’ Tyler Cruz opened the third quarter with his second TD of the game. Manor cut the lead to 27-10 on Jared Musser’s 23-yard jaunt to the end zone. Cruz scored again and the Falcons added a 29-yard field goal to close the third quarter and the scoring as neither team crossed the end line in the final frame. “We’re undersized on both sides of the ball but I’m not disappointed in how the kids competed,” said Brubaker. “The effort is there and we had some good performances. Josh Gibson rushed for 74 yards, had two receptions and led in tackles. Jared Musser has been a quiet leader as a senior,” he continued. “He leads the team in tackles and scored our lone touchdown. Logan Legenstein had another interception for the second game in a row and Colt Barley, a defensive lineman, had a great game and disrupted plays. Pedro Gomez, a sophomore, also had a nice game. He’s been very steady for us. “Offensively, we had some reverse plays, some screen plays and some misdirection,” Brubaker added. “We just did not have enough consistency.” GIRLS’ SOCCER After suffering a 4-0 defeat to CV in their first half meeting, the girls’

Penn Manor Announces 2019 Homecoming Court Miriam Badri

Penn Manor High School will celebrate homecoming with a football game at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, and a student dance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, in the school cafeteria. The game will be played against Hempfield High School at Millersville University’s Biemesderfer Stadium, 45 Pucillo Drive, Millersville. Attendees are encouraged to wear white shirts for a “white out” effect.

Kayla Mills is the daughter of Michael and Christina Mills of Manor Township. She will be escorted to the game by her father. Kayla is a member of FCA and the basketball and tennis teams. She has participated in Student Ambassadors and Mini-THON. Kayla would like to attend a four-year college and major in public relations and journalism.

A pep rally will be held for students during the school day on Oct. 18. Then, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., a Comet Nation tailgate party will be held at the turf field located behind the high school, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Student Council will host the party and offer games, food, and music.

Kaitlyn Stauﬀer is the daughter of Jason and Jodi Stauffer of Pequea. She will be escorted to the game by her father. Kaitlyn is the founder of Barre None: Dance for All, the president of Student Council, the NHS secretary, a Class of 2020 officer, a student ambassador, and the Distinguished Young Woman of Lancaster for 2020. She is also a member of the concert band, full orchestra, and chorus. She has participated in YHL, Mini-THON, Scrubs Club, yearbook, and the marching band. At Millersville University, Kaitlyn is a member of the Spanish club and the National Society of Leadership and Success. Additionally, she is a member of Les Etoiles Dance Company and an assistant teacher at Willow Street Dance Steps. Kaitlyn plans to attend a university and major in biology, Spanish, and dance and become a cardiothoracic surgeon.

Eight senior girls have been nominated for the homecoming court, and they are collecting donations for the Penn Manor Family Fund. The candidate who raises the most money will be crowned as homecoming queen at halftime during the football game. The court includes Miriam Badri, Ella Hart, Delaney Mercado, Kayla Mills, Kaitlyn Stauffer, Kailey Stoner, Leilani Torres, and Mary Anna Vozzella.
