Millersville VFW Post 7294 will hold its third annual Trunk or Treat event on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the organization’s parking lot, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville.

The free event will be canceled if there is severe weather. Go to www.vfwpost7294.org and the group’s Facebook page, “Millersville VFW Post 7294,” for more information.
“We invite anybody and everybody who would like to come here and set up their trunk and decorate their trunk and hand out candy for the kids,” Post 7294 banquet manager McKayla Herman said. People may sign up through the Facebook page, including on the day of the occasion.
In addition to all the candy, there will be hot dogs, chips, desserts, and juice.
“We invite the members here to bring in some goodies to share with everyone,” said Herman, noting that the members are very supportive of events.
Volunteers bring candy to pass out, as well.

They got the band back together. Formed in 1975 while students at Hempfield High School, members of the group Andora reunited in 2022, and it feels so good.
Andora consists of Lancaster Township resident Thomas Richards, who sings and plays the rhythm guitar; Ron Sharpe of
Chambers, who does vocals and plays the guitar; and drummer Curt Ruhl of Denver.
Richards and Chambers started playing music together in East Petersburg when they were approximately 10 years old. “We had the entire band packed in a little red wagon,” said Richards. “It was one drum, one cymbal, (Chambers’) amp, and a guitar.”

The Millersville Woman’s Club will host its annual October Card and Game Party on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and attendees should bring their own cards and games. There will be door prizes, chances to win prizes, desserts, and beverages. The desserts will include an assortment of cakes, pies, cookies, and cupcakes. Club members will make different kinds of bread. “Because the party is in October, a lot of breads are pumpkin,” Millersville Woman’s Club publicity chair Pat Seibert said. “We decorate the breads with ribbon and other fall decorations. These breads are put on each table as a centerpiece, and someone from each table can take them home with them.”
For tickets, information, and reservations, call 717-397-7965.
“I think the main reason for coming to this event is community,” Seibert said. “When we are all together in the gym at St. Philip the Apostle Church, it is wonderful to see so many people you know. Also, there are many people who attend every year, in addition to club members. It is always wonderful to see and hear everyone enjoying themselves as they play different card and board games as well as mahjong.”

Sharpe and Ruhl joined about six years later. “I don’t know how
“The business community supports our club by donating many items that we use in our (prizes), which everyone enjoys participating in,” Seibert continued. “Our members donate

we all got together, but I do remember that the first big thing we played was a Battle of the Bands at Hempfield High School,” Richards said. “We had a very unusual rehearsal spot. We rented a storage unit at a place called Stowaway. I think they had one plug for power, no heat. But we’d rehearsed there, and we rehearsed at somebody’s house. We played a Battle of the Bands, and we won.”
The group settled on the name Andora, but the details are a bit fuzzy. Sharpe pointed out that on the television show “Bewitched,” Samantha’s mother’s name is Endora. There is a country on the Iberian Peninsula named Andora. “Somehow we got to talking and came up with Andora instead of Endora,” said Sharpe.
Andora performed together for 18 months. Then, as Journey sang in 1983, the members went their “separate ways.” Some members even sold their equipment while others performed in different bands.
Curt yet,” Chambers said. “We didn’t know where he was, so we had a stand-in drummer just for that open mic night. Then we decided we’re going to get hold of Curt and we’re all going to get together.”
Andora members met at Chambers’ house to review music, brainstorm, and play some tunes. Ruhl didn’t have his drum set with him, so he used baby toys as shakers to keep rhythm.

knees take the loading and the unloading for more than one performance a month? There’s a lot of gear that we move in and out, even at our age, and that’s the other one, our age. If the gig goes past 9:30 (p.m.), we all get sleepy.”

The quartet mostly kept in contact, and Richards reached out to his bandmates after seeing an advertisement for an open mic night. As Jake Blues said to his brother, Elwood, in the movie “Blues Brothers,” “Hey, man, we’re getting the band back together.”

“Once you’ve played, you always have the bug to play,” Richards said. “Once you perform, you always want to perform. I thought maybe we could get together for the open mic night.”
Sharpe said the band members agreed they would go back to their (grass) roots. They concluded, “Let’s live for today, but play music from our youth. “We wanted the band to be nothing but the ’70s, what we experienced in our high school days,” Sharpe said. “We did incorporate a few of the songs that we played back then, but we wanted to be nothing solely but ’70s classic rock, because that was basically what we listened to during our teenage years. We’ve stuck to that, and our followers know when they come, they’re going to take a trip down memory lane and they’re going to hear ’70s classic rock. We try to give them all the songs that are sing along and danceable. You know the lyrics; you can dance to it. You’re going to have a good time. Granted, our key audience is 50-plus. But I think classic rock spans the generations.”
Andora will play Friday, Oct. 17, from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at Red Pin Bar & Grill, 1495 Millport Road, Lancaster; Friday, Nov. 21, from 8 p.m. to midnight at Riverside Camping Association, 730 E. Strawberry St., Lancaster; Friday, Jan. 23, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Elizabethtown Moose Lodge, 126 Maytown Road; Friday, Feb. 6, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Ephrata Amvets, 614 S. State St.; Friday, March 20, from 7 to 10 p.m. at
New Holland American Legion, 35 S. Hoover Ave.; and Saturday, April 18, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Christiana American Legion, 219 Newport Ave.
Visit the group’s Facebook page, “Andora,” for additional information.
Richards added, “It’s been said of the band that we are like a time machine.”

Some of their equipment remains from the first iteration. Chambers still plays the same 1970 Gibson SG guitar he was gifted by his dad at the age of 14.

He went to work. “I knew where Dave was, so I called Dave, and I knew how to get hold of Ron,” Richards recalled. The three met at the Hurricane Grill & Tavern in Columbia, fitting since Andora has been rocking people like a hurricane ever since. “We decided on three or four songs that we still remembered, and we played,” said Richards. “It was fun as usual, and then the phone calls started. Do we want to do this again?”

The answer to that question was the same as the correct response to “Who sang ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart?’” - Yes.
Ruhl’s father helped him purchase a new set Ludwig blue Vistalite drums. He sold them after the group disbanded. “I wanted to get another set of Vistalites to go back in time, like we did, with our performances. I finally found another set (in Pittsburgh), and that’s what we use today. They’re getting hard to find. That means a lot to me, those drums.”

Andora traveled to the beat of a different drum(mer) during the first show back. “When we did the first open mic, we hadn’t contacted

Andora has monthly shows planned into the spring. “We try to limit it to one performance a month for three reasons,” Sharpe said. “One, we hope we can remember enough music to play one performance a month. Two, can our

Trunk or Treaters inventory their candy collection at last year’s event at the Millersville VFW.
Post 7294 has also been collecting candy leading up to the event. “We use those candy donations, and we replenish everybody outside,” said Herman. “We drive around on a golf cart, and we holler out, ‘Who needs a restock of candy?’”
Post members will oversee Halloween-themed games inside the post’s hall, with candy prizes awarded to winners. There will be a face painting booth and hayrides.
“I think our organization is very good and very adamant about first and foremost our veterans,” said Herman. “We are also very family driven here. I think that we’re just a very welcoming, fun environment for people to come to. I know the veterans really enjoy seeing all the kids out there. It reminds them of their youth, and a lot of times they participate too.”
It’s a symbiotic relationship between the post and the community. “Our overall message and everything that we stand for I think is something that a lot of
people can agree with,” Herman said. “They enjoy coming here to support our club because they know what we also do for veterans in the community.”
Herman stated Trunk or Treat is the post’s most well-attended event of the year. “We usually have about anywhere from 50 to 60 decorated trunks outside,” she said. “There will be plenty of candy, plenty of fun.” Herman estimated that 3,000 people attended last year’s event. “We love to see the response,” she said. “All of our officers will be outside, and it’s just fun. It’s a night to just have fun with everybody.”
There will be an award for the best decorated trunk, voted on by the people that attend. “It’s just a big event that we like to do for the community,” Herman said. “It’s a great thing for everyone to come together enjoy our time together. I know Trunk or Treats are very popular. Sometimes parents work on trick-or-treat night, and they are great alternatives for them to bring the kids to.”

Seibert added that the club’s most important activities are civic and philanthropic projects. “The club has supported the Millersville Borough Community Park by buying equipment, donating funds, and planting flowers and memorial trees,” she said. “The club helped the Millersville Lions Club establish the community swimming pool and provided funds for equipment for the Millersville Fire Company.” The Millersville Woman’s Club has also organized picnics and Halloween and Christmas parties for the children of the former Mennonite Children’s Home.
The club’s current projects include contributions to a local Girl Scout Troop, Blue Rock Fire Rescue, Millersville Area Historical Society, St. Paul Senior Citizen projects, and Loft Community Partnership. “We maintain one of the gardens at the Millersville Borough Freedom Park,” said Seibert. “Parties are planned for local retirement homes, as well as birthday, Valentine, and Christmas cards for people staying there. The club has contributed to a plaque honoring the late John Herr, an outstanding contributor to our community and whose family founded the John Herr’s Village Market.”
Seibert stated that the club’s focus is on education. Every year it funds scholarships and achievement awards for seniors at Penn Manor High School and the
Seibert said that in 1957, the only women’s groups in the borough of Millersville were affiliated with churches. Four local women felt the need for a civic organization that would be open to all women in the Millersville and surrounding areas. As a result, the four women established the Millersville Woman’s Club, which became a member of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs in 1958.

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host an author talk with Mark Kelley, author of “An Uncommon Woman: The Life of Lydia Hamilton Smith,” on Thursday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Mennonite Life Community Room.
Lydia Hamilton Smith was a prominent African American businesswoman in 19th-century Lancaster, as well as the collaborator of abolitionist congressman Thaddeus Stevens. Smith is believed to have joined Stevens in operating an Underground Railroad station and worked alongside the congressman in his advocacy for justice for those seeking freedom and opportunity. “An Uncommon Woman” explores how Smith served the cause of abolition, managed Stevens’ household, acquired property, and crossed
racialized social boundaries.
Kelley holds a doctorate in journalism from Syracuse University. He worked for 25 years as a broadcast journalist and has taught journalism and mass communications at Goshen College, Syracuse University, the University of Maine, and the New England School of Communications. Kelley also taught at Lancaster Mennonite School. He lives in Lancaster with his wife, Marty.
“An Uncommon Woman” will be available for purchase at the event. The presentation will also be available via livestream.
Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.
