hat does it look and sound like when more than 50 marimba performers get together for a concert? Come to the 2026 Heartland Marimba International Festival and find out. The festival will be held from Wednesday, Nov. 4, through Sunday, Nov. 8, at various locations in and around Lancaster County, culminating in a

featured performance at Millersville University on Nov. 8. “ The marimba is a versatile instrument - warm and resonant, sharp and percussive - and the wide variety of music genres being performed will showcase all these musical attributes,” said Stephanie Smith, director of the Lancaster Marimba Ensemble and co-director of the Heartland Marimba International Festival. “Their size makes

people wonder how we move them (spoiler alert - we take them apart), and their designs are akin to a piece of art. Performers move around frequently, and the audience can see the instrument being played, which adds to the engagement of the audience.” This is the second year for the festival, which began last year under the name Musser Marimba Festival.

Building a Community on Kindness

R131956

Two years ago, Victoria Valentine founded Healing Our Planet (HOP) on the core philosophy that being a good steward of the environment starts with a community built on kindness. “There’s so much we could be doing in the community,” said Valentine. “We’ve got to make this world a better place, and the only way to do it is by working together.” On the fourth Friday of every month, HOP hosts a community gathering at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster,

It’s almost like the old chicken and the egg routine. What’s unclear is if Lancaster County is so generous because there are so many great causes out there, or if there are so many great causes because Lancaster County residents are so altruistic. “Lancaster County is a frugal See Faithful Give pg 5

“It started with the directors Matthew Coley, David Harvey and myself - desiring to honor Clair Omar Musser, a Manheim native who was a visionary for marimba design, teaching and composing,” Smith said. “Some of his most celebrated work was bringing 100 to 200 people together to play in marimba orchestras. Those orchestras were our inspiration for organizing one of our own. We wanted

Each gathering also includes a talk from one or more guest speakers. On Sept. 25, HOP’s program featured guest speakers Rep. Izzy Smith-Wade-El and Michael Mantooth, Lancaster Clean Water Partners’ director of projects and a member of the Conestoga-Susquehannock tribe. Smith-Wade-El’s talk emphasized the importance of showing kindness to everyone in the community, especially those experiencing homelessness. The program also highlighted Hands Up Partners, a nonprofit organization that provides weekly stipends for community members without housing in exchange for

work opportunities such as group cleanups in local parks and public areas. “We are dedicated to ending homelessness in Lancaster County,” said Valentine, who serves as a member of Hands Up Partners’ board. “That’s the ultimate goal, but there’s a lot we can do to help people in the meantime.” While Smith-Wade-El spoke about the importance of kindness and its role in healing the community, Mantooth’s lecture explored the value of kindness when dealing with the natural world. As Lancaster Clean Water Partners’ director of projects, Mantooth oversees initiatives across Lancaster County to restore and maintain healthy waterways. Mantooth, who serves as the Conestoga-Susquehannock’s tribe historian, also offered a Native American perspective on ecological issues, as well as some of his tribe’s cultural practices and connection

to the environment. Mantooth discussed the Conestoga-Susquehannock tribe’s efforts to receive state and federal recognition, which would allow it to access additional resources needed to revitalize the land. In addition to HOP’s monthly program series, Valentine hopes to partner with local schools to implement various programs and activities designed to foster empathy and inclusion among students of all ages. Activity suggestions include the Kindness Chain Reaction art project, which tasks each student with drawing or painting an act of kindness. The students’ artworks are then linked together to demonstrate how kindness can spread. Other suggestions prompt students to observe a weekly or monthly “Random Acts of Kindness Day” or to establish a newsletter to

Valentine is also seeking schools interested in partnering with HOP to create “Kindness Clubs” to offer a space for students to suggest their own activities and to work together to bring compassion to the classroom. “So many kids are bullied or made to feel like they don’t belong,” Valentine said. “We want to create kindness in our schools that will lead to more kindness in our communities later on.” HOP’s next program will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, at Community Mennonite Church. Mantooth will return as a guest speaker, and the gathering will feature a talk from Dave Costarella, founder of Hands Up Partners. county,” said David Kieffer, pastor of Ephrata Reformed Presbyterian Church and president of Faithful Give. “Residents are generous, but they’re not foolish with their donations. They want good return on their investments. They want to donate to causes that are aligned with their values. They want to steward their finances well, and Faithful Give exists to help with that.” Faithful Give is one of Lancaster County’s most far-reaching and well-organized giving campaigns. The upcoming Faithful Give features a pair of interactive in-person October events, but 90 percent of the donations received by the facilitating agent comes through online gifts. The received donations are

distributed to nonprofits, missions and causes that are physically located in Lancaster County and benefit its citizens. “Faithful Give is designed to connect generous donors to kingdom causes in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “But Faithful Give is not just a financial giving event. It’s a celebratory advocacy event. Every ministry knows their needs and opportunities better than we do. On our website, each of the participating ministries has a page that tells what the money will go toward. “We really want to expand people’s understanding of generosity,” added Kieffer. “Generosity is not just about giving your money; it’s about giving your heart and your

talents. We just want to connect people and celebrate that. (Faithful Give) really emphasizes the versatility of the Christian community.” From midnight on Sunday, Oct. 18, to midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 20, interested individuals can direct financial donations to Faithful Give’s general fund by going to www.faithfulgive.org/donate. People can also donate funds in person at Faithful Give’s prayer breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, or at Faithful Give’s Celebration Expo from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at The Junc-

tion Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. “The breakfast is a wonderful opportunity to learn about all that God is doing in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “Most of the kingdom causes are represented, and you can learn about their ministries, know those people and pray for them. One of the neat things we’ve seen is the networking that has come out of it. The Celebration Expo is a full, family event. Families get a chance to spend a night out. Last year, my favorite thing was seeing how many families came out to the expo and learned about the missions.”

This year, more than 150 Lancaster County-associated ministries, nonprofits and social service organizations have registered to be a part of Faithful Give. The funds that they receive allow those organizations to provide broader, deeper and more impactful services and programs, as well as to reach more individuals in need. “They are people from organizations who love God and love Lancaster County,” said Kieffer, a resident of Manheim Township. “They’re people who make Lancaster County a great place to live and raise a family. They’re people who have inherited a great legacy

and want to pass that legacy on to the next generation.” Following some exploratory research, the initial Faithful Give event was staged in 2023. Over the last three years, the fundraising and giving initiative has raised more than $4.4 million for the underresourced. “Every year we’ve set a goal and God has surpassed it. This year, we’ll see what God will do,” said Kieffer. “When we started, I wasn’t sure it was going to fly. Certainly, God has done more than we have asked, thought or imagined. It has served our community. It’s provided connection, advocacy and celebration. It’s just been a blessing.”

Marimba from pg 3 Smith, who is the assistant director of Manheim Central’s marching band, has played the marimba since she was in fourth grade. She studied it more seriously at Millersville University and then joined the Lancaster Marimba Ensemble 30 years ago, becoming director in 2020. She’s excited to introduce people to the marimba or bring longtime fans together to enjoy the instrument at the festival. “People can expect to be delighted,” she said. “Each event

will feature different groupings of marimba performers, and each venue is unique in how the marimbas will be experienced by an audience. We also love to share the instrument’s history, and Lancaster has quite the marimba story to be shared.” Lancaster County played a major role in popularizing the marimba, with musician Musser promoting the instrument. A Manheim native, he was a marimba virtuoso, conductor, composer, teacher and keyboard percussion designer who lived from 1901 to 1998.

Blue Rock Fire Rescue

Together, we’ve raised $3.6 million toward a new firehouse. To every donor who has given, thank you. Your generosity and support has helped us reach an incredible milestone. We are grateful for the generosity of local residents, businesses, foundations and community partners. These funds will help provide our volunteers with a new, modern firehouse that will strengthen emergency response, enhance safety and ensure we can continue serving our neighbors for generations to come. While reaching this benchmark is worth celebrating, it also serves as a reminder of what remains possible. With your continued support, we can build on this momentum and reach our $11 million goal. Thank you for believing in our vision and helping shape the future of Blue Rock. Be part of the progress. Help bring our vision to life with your gift today.
