CROP Hunger Walk To Return To Muddy Run

The annual CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, Holtwood.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the start of the walk at 9 a.m. The event is open to members of the public of all abilities and will have activities for children who participate.

This year will mark the 43rd CROP Hunger Walk in Solanco, a tradition that was started by the Solanco

Ministerium in 1980. The ministerium coordinated the event until 2006, at which point Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren took over management of the walk. Church members Mary Etta Reinhart and Don Trimble have been co-chairs of the walk for the last 16 years and have made some adjustments that included moving it to Muddy Run Park and shortening the distance from 10 miles to 5 miles. “It’s been a wonderful change,” said Reinhart. “The walk has been completely revamped.”

year’s theme is “Animal Kingdom.”

If

you’re walking through Millersville on Saturday, Oct. 22, and begin to question whether you’ve accidentally wandered into a zoo, don’t be alarmed. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the annual Millersville parade will commence, and this

“We’re inviting parade entries to highlight animals and use that in their floats. We’re also encouraging folks to walk in the parade with their pets and animals,” said Victor DeSantis, chief of staff for president Daniel Wubah at Millersville University and parade coordinator.

“We wanted to use the animal theme because it’s so inclusive to so many types of organizations.” Each Millersville parade traditionally has a new theme that recognizes different people or events, such as last year’s “Hometown Heroes” theme, which recognized first responders and military personnel.

St. Paul Lutheran Church will hold a service on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 4 p.m. to celebrate the beginning of its first congregation in Millersville. The service will open with the dedication of a memorial tree on church grounds and will be followed by a dinner reception inside the church after the service. There is a set fee for the reception;

St. Paul

St. Paul Lutheran Church traces its roots back to 1844, when it was established as part of a union church. As a union church, the building was shared by the Lutheran, Moravian, and German Reformed congregations.

“There were Lutherans in Millersville before 1844, but they worshipped privately,” said Ken Hoak, church historian of St. Paul Lutheran. “It was when the log church was built there that the three congregations came together and shared the building.” The original union church was located on the corner of George Street and Cottage Avenue. Since then, the building has taken on various roles, serving as the Millersville post office, a bank, and the George Street Café for several years.

In 1871, the Lutherans dedicated a cornerstone to be used for their own building, a brick church that was located at St. Paul’s current site on North George Street. It was demolished in 1973 to allow for the construction of what is the church’s present-day building. The Oct. 16 service will commemorate the laying of the first cornerstone of the original brick church, which

marked the beginning of the Lutherans’ first independent congregation in the town.

The tree that will be dedicated at the start of the service is an Atlas blue cedar sapling that was planted two weeks ago. “We wanted to plant a cedar of Lebanon due to its biblical significance but couldn’t acquire one locally. The Atlas blue cedar is a relative to the cedar of Lebanon. It’s in the same family, but instead of originating in the Holy Lands, it comes from the Atlas mountains in Morocco,” said Hoak. Additionally, a bay magnolia seedling will be given to each family of the congregation to be planted on its own property.

During the service, the congregation will burn the mortgage for the current church. The church’s organist, William Napier, will also perform several original musical compositions during the celebration.

This year, the parade will alter its tradition of appointing a grand marshal to lead the parade. Normally, the honorary designation is given to a specific person who has made an impact in the area or left a legacy behind, such as a community leader or a university or political official, but this year the title will be given to all of the volunteers and donors who have made the parade successful for 25 years. “It takes up to 150 volunteers on parade day to make this happen,” said DeSantis. “They donate their time and effort to coordinate traffic, carry banners, wear

costumes and give out candy. There would be no parade without them.” The parade is also entirely funded by private donations and sponsorships from individuals and businesses in the community.

The parade will begin at Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville, and travel through the center of the borough before reaching its destination in front of the Student Memorial Center on George Street “One of the things that excites me the most about the parade is the support from the community,” said DeSantis. “It has been the driving force for many years. People bring their kids and grandkids, and when I drive through the borough to set up the night before the parade, there will be folks who already have their chairs set up in anticipation.” DeSantis said he expects upward of 15,000 spectators and participants this year.

The Millersville parade was started in 1997 to build a better relationship between Millersville University, Millersville Borough and the adjacent communities and townships. A quarter of a century later, it has grown into one of the largest parades in the area and draws participants from as far as Maryland. This year, the parade will feature multiple student and adult bands, including bands from Millersville University, the Penn Manor area, Dallastown, Middletown, the Conestoga Valley area and Perryville, Md.

After a 3-0 loss to Hempfield Thursday, Sept. 29, the Comets (5-5 overall) hosted Dallastown Monday, October 3 and, despite an eight-kill night from Lezlie Nguyen, lost 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-18). The Wildcats benefitted from Manor’s struggle to receive serve, especially early in the match. The hosts jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second set and after letting Dallastown back in, the rest of the set was a battle and featured four ties. Unforced errors, however, played a role in the fourpoint loss.

Eliana Knaub (13 assists, 1 ace) and Cassidy McCollum (13 digs) were also stat leaders.

The Comets are 5-3 and sit in third place in Section One

Volleyball Team Battles Dallastown

behind Hempfield (8-0) and CV (7-1).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Clinging to a 1-0 first half lead at Conestoga Valley, Thursday, Sept. 29, the Comets exploded for six second half goals en route to a lopsided 7-0 shutout, their second over the Bucks and fifth of the year. Carly Keene notched a hat trick to pace an offense that scored four goals in a five-minute span. Lilly Rineer, who delivered a pair of assists, opened that barrage with a goal in the 45th minute. Izzy Kligge followed two minutes later with Keene netting two of her goals in the 48th and 50th minutes to pull away. Carolyn Hinkle and freshman Kylie Collins, with her first goal of the season, rounded out the attack.

After a 4-3 overtime thriller over Warwick back on Sept. 15, the Comets hosted the Warriors last Monday, Oct. 3, but couldn’t sweep the series, dropping a 2-1 final. Tied at 0-0 in the first half, Warwick struck first, scoring 12 minutes after intermission. Kligge knotted the score in the 59th minute, making good on Keene’s assist. But it was Warwick that had the last say, scoring with five minutes left.

“We had 25 shots but could not finish,” said head coach Bill Zapata. “We should have been up 4-0 in the first half. We hit the post, had a ball on the line, and a couple were barely wide. It was frustrating because, that night, we were the better team by far.

“A win probably would have sealed a berth in the league playoffs,” he added. “We are currently 7th in the district. So, I’m thinking if we win two of our last three, we should finish in the top eight and host a district playoff game.”

The girls are currently ranked 7th in the district power rankings.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team ran its winning streak to 12 straight games with a pair of Cumberland Valley Tournament victories Saturday, Oct. 1. The girls defeated West Perry 3-1 and the host team 2-0.

A balanced attack led to three goals against West Perry. Tristan Groff, Avery Bradburn, and Izzy Thatcher accounted for the scoring with Bradburn, Chloe Hook and Cait McGough dishing out assists.

In a tighter game against the hosts, Bradburn and Liz Bustillo accounted for goals in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. McGough was credited with both assists. Adeline Arkhurst made a combined nine saves.

Back in Section One action Tuesday, October 4, the Comets found themselves in another overtime battle against visiting Warwick. And for the second time this season, Manor prevailed, this time winning 2-1.

Bradburn’s goal with 1:03 left in the third quarter knotted the score at 1-1 while Annie Bibus, scoring just her third goal of the season, provided the game-winner at the 6:12 mark in overtime. McGough and T. Groff were credited with assists.

The girls are ranked first in the District Three AAA power rankings.

CROSS COUNTRY

On a soggy Hempfield cross country course, the Comet harriers were swept by the Black Knights last Wednesday.

Abby Ames and Mackenzi Nafziger finished second and third respectively, but the hosts secured the next eight places to win 23-38. Bethany Hetrick (12th), Alyssa Eby (14th) and Madison Martin (16th) rounded out the top five.

In the boys’ race, Hempfield secured eight of the top nine places en route to an 18-45 win over the Comets. Kaleb Kabakjian’s third place finish led the visitors. Tristan Weaver, Carter Vinson, and Jack Hightower placed 10th through 12th, respectively and Donavon Landis (14th) rounded out the counters.

“We knew it would be tough competition, but we had a lot of PR’s on our teams,” said head coach Andrea Kramer.

BOYS’ SOCCER

After a pair of road losses, the Comets returned to their home field Thursday, Sept. 29, but the familiar surroundings did not lead to a win. Three goals were scored in less than two minutes and two of them were by Conestoga Valley who slipped out of Millersville with a 2-1 victory.

Thatcher Kratz, assisted by Hunter Evans, provided Manor’s lone goal. Drew Lebo was credited with four saves.

At Warwick last Monday, the Comets were looking to avenge a 2-1 first half loss to the Warriors but instead were dealt their second 6-1 loss of the season, the first coming two weeks earlier against Hempfield. Tyler Hostetter’s second half goal prevented the shutout.

FOOTBALL

On the road Friday, Sept. 30, the Comets fell to 3-3 overall with a lopsided 34-7 loss to a 5-1, Section One Hempfield squad. The Knights scored three times in

the first quarter, including opening the game with a 23yard fumble recovery.

They picked up their fourth TD in the third quarter and scored again with 5:28 left. The Comets got on board two minutes later when Dhamir Wesley hauled in an 8-yard TD strike from Eli Warfel (10-23 for 143 yards). It was his third catch of the night. Clark Wagstaff caught two passes for 74 yards. Jonathan Osman and Kyle Schmidtke combined for 19 tackles.

Church Plans Craft Show

Bethany Evangelical Congregational (EC) Church of Creswell, 1165 Letort Road, Conestoga, will host its second annual Fall Craft Show on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. A variety of local crafters and other small businesses will offer items for purchase, and a food truck will be on-site.

Vendor items will include handmade cards and gifts, macramé plant hangers and décor, essential oils, handmade jewelry, homemade fudge, crocheted items and décor, woodworking items, and floral arrangements. The event will also include giveaway drawings, a bake sale, and drinks for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting Bethany’s Christmas Compas-

sion Toy Drive.

As a result of the toy drive, Bethany provides an opportunity for families in need within the Penn Manor community to shop for free toys and toiletries to give their children at Christmas. The children range in age from infants to teenagers.

Community members are invited to donate new, unopened toys or monetary donations. For every new, unopened toy an attendee donates at the craft show, he or she will receive one free giveaway drawing ticket. Tickets may also be purchased at the event.

For more information, contact Vicki Foutz at 717872-5720.

CROP Walk

Refugees To Share Stories

The Row House Inc. and Church World Service (CWS) will host a program of firsthand refugee stories on Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. in The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster.

The New Neighbors Speakers Bureau of CWS will be represented by Apsara Uprety and Amer Al Fayadh, new Lancaster residents from Nepal and Iraq, respectively. Shawn Smucker, author of the 2018 memoir “Once We Were Strangers,” will share his perspective on befriending

refugees. Staff members Rachel Helwig and Andrew Mashas will give an update on what CWS is doing to enhance Lancaster as a welcoming city and how people can get involved. There will be a question-and-answer time, and refreshments will be available.

There is a discount for those who register in advance; tickets will also be available at the door. Admission is free to Row House members. To learn more, visit www.therowhouse.org. Limited seats can be reserved through www.eventbrite.

The CROP Walk at Muddy Run has seen an upward trend in its community engagement and the amount of money it has raised in recent years; in 2020, it raised over $17,000, the most money raised from the walk since 1988. The goal for this year’s walk is set to $18,000.

Each year, the walk features a different challenge for participants. Walkers in this year’s event will receive a list of animals that they will need to spot along the course, which may be completed and exchanged for a small prize at the end of the walk.

Last year, over 70 walkers representing 13 churches participated in the CROP Walk. The event is designed to be enjoyable for everyone, and participants range from young children to senior citi-

zens. The main route will stretch through several wooded areas; however, an alternate route that is entirely paved will be available for families with strollers and those unable to trek the wooded paths. “It’s a fundraiser but also a great way to spend the morning,” said Reinhart. “There’s a lot of fellowship. You get to meet people from other churches and enjoy refreshments under the pavilion. A lot of people just enjoy being there with other walkers.”

Each CROP Walk traditionally donates 75% of its proceeds to the Church World Service and 25% to a local nonprofit. This year, 25 percent of the funds raised will benefit Solanco Neighborhood Ministries.

Tax Credits Available To Farmers

A statewide program is offering $13 million in tax credits to help Pennsylvania farmers install conservation practices that can improve long-term viability, keep soil on the land, and reduce pollution flowing into local rivers and streams. Tax credits through the Resource Enhancement and Protection Program (REAP) program offset 50% to 75% of the costs of notill planting and precision agriculture equipment, cover crops,

forested streamside buffers, barnyard improvements, waste storage facilities, conservation plans, nutrient management plans, and other practices.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) started and led a diverse coalition that advocated for the creation of REAP in 2007. It was amended in 2019 as part of the Pennsylvania Farm Bill, and REAP has received funding increases in the years since. According to the State

Jordan Scott Gilbert, director of the Cavod Theatre production of “A Tale of Two Cities,” thinks that staging the musical in the small theater will only enhance the telling. “It’s a big show that we are trying to make intimate in this small space, which is great for storytelling,” said Gilbert, who was the assistant producer of the show on Broadway. Gilbert chose “A Tale of Two Cities” along with Cavod artistic director Monica DePaul and Connie Dienner, director of Cavod Performing Arts.

Members of the cast of the Cavod Theatre production of “A Tale of Two Cities” are rehearsing the musical under the direction of Jordan Scott Gilbert.

Revolution, the story encompasses love and redemption in a way that parallels Cavod’s mission. The show is choreographed by Stephanie Brooks Martin, with musical direction by Amy Rau. Glen Brodersen of Sight & Sound Theatre is handling the set.

Calling the show “vocally challenging,” Gilbert relayed that the cast is doing a “really awesome job.” “There are some cast members who are perfect for their roles,” he noted of the cast of nearly 30. “My point of view with the storyline is God working in people, specifically the lead character (of Sydney Carton) to bring him to a place of faith,” continued Gilbert. “I think it will be very moving and show the audience the depths

people will go to save those that they love.”

Dienner said that the show is a bit different for Cavod because there are dark moments. “It can be hard to find shows with redemptive meaning,” she said, adding, “To show the redemption, you have to show the evil.” Dienner said the show is for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised. She compared the show to another classic, “Les Miserables” by Victor Hugo. “It has a lot of the same feel (because) it’s speaking from the heart,” said Dienner.

Tickets, which are discounted for students, may be purchased at www.cavod.org or by emailing info@cafod.org or calling 717-354-3355.
