Penn Manor

As the school year begins in the fall, the arrival of crisp autumn air provokes excitement in most kids and nostalgia in many adults. Between discussions about the semester’s first homework assignments and elaborate plans for Halloween parties, teenagers often search for a date to the homecoming dance. Corsages and boutonnieres fill gymnasiums across the country, and crowds flock to the bleachers for the annual football game, but nearly all schools have their own unique traditions to celebrate homecoming. Penn Manor High School is no exception, and its community celebrated homecoming in a variety of ways during the last week of September.
In addition to fulfilling their duties within the school, members of the homecoming court have an annual tradition of raising money for a local nonprofitorganization.
In the weeks leading up to the homecoming football game on Sept. 29, the members of the homecoming court challenged themselves to exceed their duties in academics and extracurriculars alike. Many of the students are enrolled in honors and Advanced Placement classes, play for a school sports team or perform in musical ensemble. This year, the court’s candidates were Ava Aslanidis, Olivia Clark, Lauren Daigle, Jireh Ellis, Grace Gerner, Carolyn Hinkle, Anouk Landgraff, Ciana Suydam, Jeremy Andro, Ethan Benne, Gavin Egan, Alexxander Eme, Ben Erb, Tyler Keller, Hector Rodriguez and
The Millersville Woman’s Club (MWC) will host its annual Card and Game Party on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster. From 7 to 9 p.m., enthusiasts of card games, board games and puzzles are invited to bring their favorite tabletop activity to play with others in the church gymnasium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are available to purchase at a set price for the event, which will feature door prizes, a prize drawing and complimentary desserts and beverages. The door prizes and items that are available in the drawing will comprise a variety of donated goods from local businesses, such as handmade jewelry and gift baskets. The value of door the prizes will equal the cost of a ticket at minimum. To purchase a ticket or request additional information, call 717-397-7965.
Dhamir Wesley.
In addition to fulfilling their duties within the school, members of the homecoming court have an annual tradition of raising money for a local nonprofit organization. For the past five years, Penn Manor students have chosen to support the Loft Community Partnership in Millersville. This year, the students raised nearly $8,000 and five boxes of canned goods for the organization, which provides various services to those throughout the Penn
Manor School District. “In the past, they’ve chosen Loft Community Partnership because of how it connects to their fellow students,” said Janna Ames, adviserof Club Comet Nation/Student Council at the high school. “The organization helps students who are potentially sitting next to them in class or their younger siblings in middle school and elementary school.”
During halftime at Penn Manor’s football game versus Hempfield High School, Hector Rodriguez and
Jireh Ellis were crowned homecoming king and queen, respectively. After a close game, the Penn Manor football team triumphed 23 to 19 over the Black Knights to win custody of a trophy that the two teams compete for annually. The match-up has been nicknamed “The Battle of 462” in reference to the state route that divides the two teams’ school districts, and the Comets’ victory marks the first time Penn Manor has recovered the trophy in 14 years.

MWC has been hosting the card and game party for many years, recently moving the event from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millersville to St. Philip in order to accommodate its growing number of players. Each player may choose a table in the gymnasium, and the event often has upward of 50 tables of board gamers and puzzlers.
For many members of the community, such as MWC member Pat Seibert, the game night has become a beloved tradition and a setting to catch up with friends. Every year, Seibert, who is a retired educator and avid mahjong player, participates in See Card party pg 5
Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County.
“We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”
The result is a three-day online giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park.
“There will be worship, celebration, and announcing prizes,” explained Kieffer. There is no cost to attend either event, but donations will be welcomed. Those wishing to attend either event may register at www.faithful give.org.
Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the event. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller
organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming award are open at https://faithful give.org/prizes/.
Kieffer pointed out that the first day of the event will not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word. “(The guide) will enable people to learn about the
organizations and pray for them,” Kieffer said.
Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county. “This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful non-
profit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions in every area of life,” he said. “This was started by those who want to celebrate those organizations, nurture their vision, and guard it for the next generation.”
Looking ahead, Kieffer
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
game and ceremony, students and teachers were encouraged to show their Comet pride through a series of activities. Club Comet Nation/Student Council members handed out small prizes to individuals who dressed themselves according to the spirit week’s daily themes, such as donning pajamas for Mellow Monday.
On Sept. 27 from 5 to 8 p.m., members of the public were invited to join students and teachers for Fall Fest. The event included an inflatable obstacle course, a bounce house, food trucks, and games and stands operated by school clubs. Penn Manor’s spirit week festivities concluded with the homecoming dance on Sept. 30.
The Millersville Woman’s Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville. The guest speaker will be Betsy Shank, founder of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation. This organization, which is staffed entirely by volunteers, rehabilitates animals like rabbits and squirrels at its facility in Millersville and assists in releasing them back into their natural habitat.
Acorn Acres also offers educational programs featuring its ambassador animals, which are rescued and nonreleasable. Shank will bring

Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel can spark and explode when damaged. To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch of a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.
Rechargeable batteries are in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If the rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark
or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process.
According to Robert Zorbaugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is putting trash haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste disposal facilities.
Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many
free and convenient dropoff locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In Lancaster County, residents can use LCSWMA’s drivethrough Household Hazardous Waste Facility to drop-off both alkaline and rechargeable batteries.
For more details and to learn about other collection locations, visit www.SafeBatteryDisposal.com.
The webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips.
More information about LCSWMA is available at www.lcswma.org.
the event with her former colleagues. Many of her fellow mahjong fans travel from other parts of the county to reunite. “When people come in, everybody knows everybody,” Seibert said. “It’s a great way for people to catch up with those from around the area.”
The proceeds from the card and game party will support MWC’s community service initiatives, which include scholarships for students at Penn Manor High School and Lancaster County Career & Technology Center. The club annually offers three $1,000 academic scholarships and various achievement awards to students who excel in art, mathematics, English, music and social studies. In addition to MWC’s work with local schools, the club financially contributes to organizations such as the Millersville Lions Club, Blue Rock Fire Rescue, Mennonite Central Committee and Loft Community Partnership. On holidays, MWC members organize festive parties and make cards for residents of local nursing homes who may not be able to spend the day with relatives.
This year is MWC’s 66th year as a civic organization. The group was formed by local women for the purpose of serving the community in a number of ways. MWC has continued to achieve its founding goal through its many projects over the decades. Seibert became involved with the organization as a young adult, and she remained active for six years prior to becoming an educator in Warwick School District. Seibert retired 10 years ago, and promptly became a dedicated member once more.
“I knew what the club was all about, so I joined as soon as I retired,” Seibert said. “I had
been involved with the Lititz community as a school librarian in Warwick, but I’ve always lived in Millersville and wanted to get involved here.”

He’s short, covered in hair and very elusive. He’s the Albatwitch, known as a “baby Bigfoot,” and you’ll have a chance to celebrate him at the 10th annual Albatwitch Day. The event will be held at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14.
The day will feature live music, vendors, food, guest speakers and more.
“We’ve got some great speakers coming in,” said Rick Fisher, who is organizing the festival with Chris Vera. “We’ve got Dave Spinks from West Virginia, who has appeared on a number of TV shows, including
‘Terror in the Woods.’ We have Sean ‘The Forkchop’ Forker, who does a popular podcast called ‘Sasquatch Experience,’ and we have Matt Lake, who wrote ‘Weird Pennsylvania’ and other books. We also have Rissa Miller, who will be talking about the history of witches.”
Five bands will perform during the day - Dillweed, Travelers, Sound Method, Heroes 4 Ransom and Tang Moon - and both daytime and evening trolley rides through town will be offered.
“During the day, the tours will run every 45 minutes, so you can get tickets at the event,” Fisher said. Participants on the daytime tours are given apples to throw into the woods, tempt-
ing the Albatwitch to reveal himself in search of his favorite snack.
Fisher recommends purchasing tickets ahead of time for the night-time haunted trolley tour rides, which sell out quickly. “When we do the ghost trolley tour, Chris and I take flashlights along, and we look to see if any of the apples were eaten,” he said.
More than 80 vendors will be featured at Albatwitch Day as well, Vera said. “What I always think of when I’m getting vendors is, ‘A husband might be a
Bigfoot guy, but his wife may hate Bigfoot.’ I want to be sure she’s happy, too.” Vendors will sell items including handmade jewelry, Halloween décor and Bigfoot crafts.
“It’s a mixture of anything and everything,” Vera said. “It’s like an off-the-wall craft show, and everything is homemade.”
Local nonprofits will have booths set up at the festival, including Rivertown Theatre Productions, Raven Ridge Wildlife Center and the Indian Steps Museum. Lancaster PA
