When the congregation of Bethesda United Methodist Church (UMC) celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1993, a booklet summarizing its history was created. In it, the authors wrote, “The glory of Bethesda is not as a shrine, but as a live, growing church where the Gospel of Jesus Christ is being preached, where the Word of God is being taught to the rising generation of the community. May we remain steadfast and immovable in the ages to come.” Now, 25 years later, the church is once again celebrating the past and anticipating the future. “When you look back, you realize how fruitful it was back then and how it can be again,” observed longtime church member Pete Metzler. Church member Sidney Graver noted that “perseverance” is the defining
characteristic of the small congregation that worships at 1086 Hilldale Road, Holtwood. A new sign on the north side of Holtwood Road (Route 372) points up the hill to the church campus. “There was a time when there were no younger folks in the congregation, so they started softball teams,” Graver recalled. The venture was successful, and at one point, the church fielded three teams as part of the Southern End Church Softball League, which had rules promoting church growth. “You had to attend church and not miss two Sundays in a row unless you were visiting another church, and then you had to bring in a bulletin as proof,” Graver said. Sickness and work were also approved excuses for missing Sunday services. “There is a trophy in (the church),” added church member Bonnie Berrier. That trophy, along with other memorabilia, will be displayed as part of the See Bethesda Homecoming pg 9

The grand marshal is selected each year based on their significant contributions to the Millersville community. All nominees must live or work in the Millersville community. Frerichs was chosen for the honor primarily due to his extensive service to both Millersville University (MU), from which he graduated in 1964, and the Penn Manor School District. Frerichs is professor emeritus of educational foundations at MU, after serving 36 years (1968 to 2004).
