The Millersville Parade will step off Saturday, Oct. 17, delighting the crowds of families, college students and neighbors who are sure to line the sidewalks along its route. The parade is a community celebration presented by Millersville University (MU) in partnership with Millersville Borough. The procession will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Penn Manor High School, following a 2.5-mile route down Herr,

Landis and George streets to MU’s Student Memorial Center. Director of university events Lydia Yeager said the parade will offer something for everyone, from children and grandparents to MU alumni in town for homecoming festivities. Spectators can expect to see floats, marching bands, dancers, police officers, fire trucks, classic and antique cars, student groups, veterans, nonprofit organizations and animals. “It is an opportunity for community and unity,” Yeager said. “You

Sixteen years later, Shank has dedicated her life to rescuing local wildlife as the founder and executive director of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation. Located at 2100 Stone Mill Road in Lancaster, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates native prey species and Virginia opossums, in addition to educating the community on the animals it serves. You can see three or four generations of families in one segment of sidewalk.” T h i s y e a r ’s t h e m e , “Decades of Discovery: America at 250,” pays homage to the past, present and future - along with plenty of patriotic flair. The parade will be held rain or shine, with the exception of dangerous weather conditions. The procession of 100 or more entries will last about 90 minutes, with its end traditionally signaled by a steam calliope. “In America’s 250th birthday celebration year, we wanted to encourage people to not just show patriotism but have fun with all of the growth, innovation and culture that have been part of the past 250 years,” Yeager said. “We really hope this year’s entries have fun with that theme.” The parade began in 1997 by a group of volunteers dedicated to strengthening relationships among MU, the borough and other surrounding communities. It takes place during MU’s homecoming celebration, with the Marauders set to take on Kutztown University’s football team at 2 p.m. on Saturday. “ We ’re ver y blessed that not only Millersville Borough and the campus community but surround-

ing municipalities embrace the event,” Yeager said. “It’s truly a community and university effort.” Yeager, an MU alumna who is in her third year of directing the parade, said the event typically draws 3,000 to 5,000 spectators, depending largely on the weather. “We’ve seen it all, whatever Mother Nature may bring us,” she said. Free parking is available on streets near the parade route. The parade is funded entirely by sponsorships and donations from local businesses and community members. About 80 volunteers, who carry banners, answer questions and help maintain safety at intersections, help the morning run smoothly. Community safety is the top priority, and Yeager offers special thanks to MU Police, Millersville Borough Police, Blue Rock Fire Rescue and Lancaster EMS for their efforts to protect parade participants and spectators. “It’s a timeless tradition,” she said of the parade. “It’s about families, friends and the community coming together and just enjoying a beautiful morning. It should be a great day.” To support the Millersville Parade or learn more about the event, visit www.millersville.edu/ parade/.

Although a major fundraising campaign made the expansion possible, Shank continues to rely on community support to cover the rehabilitation center’s expenses, as well as help from volunteer staff members. In September, Acorn Acres Rehabilitation Center launched Second Chance Circle, a community of monthly donors who can contribute any amount to support the organization. “It’s a whole lot of people giving a little bit that are going to make a whole lot of second chances possible,” said Shank. “Every donation helps us give another animal a second chance.”

People aren’t going to drive over an hour to bring these animals to you,’” Shank said. “They said if I took the animals in and got them stabiliz ed, I could transfer them to Red Creek. So we just opened the doors.” Within two days, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation took in more than 100 animals affected by the storm.
