Meeting The Needs Of The Community
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Loft Community Partnership (LCP) recently appointed Jenna Graeff as its new edirector of strategic partnerships as part of an initiative to increase community engagement and grow the organization. Graeff, who grew up in the Quarryville area, graduated from Millersville University with a Master of Social Work and worked closely with the university’s Center for Public Scholarship and Social Change.
Graeff discovered Loft Community Partnership through her efforts in the community and has worked with board members from the organization on projects such as Hettie’s Hope Chest. Graeff assisted with fundraising and various operations for the initiative, which is a nonprofit that provides diapers to families in need in the Penn Manor area.
“The position of director allows a lot of room for macro social work practice and growth alongside (Loft Community Partnership),” said Graeff. “It’s a young organization and I am newly working in the field with a master’s; it’s a good match and we’ll be able to grow together.”
In her first week as director, Graeff was already coordinating several community projects. Loft Community Partnership will administer a survey for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and has plans to resume its tradition of hosting a quarterly breakfast for churches and community organizations to discern what the area’s biggest needs are and how to address them.
“We really want to dig into these operations and look at what is able to be streamlined, as well as how we can increase volunteers and community engagement,” said Graeff. “My experience is in the intersection of a school district and community hub like Penn Manor is.” Graeff interned at the Solanco School District, where she was able to get a closer look within the area and determine how a school district connects with community resources.
“What drew us to Jenna were her experience and qualifications,” said LCP’s community liaison, Deb Meckley. “She has connections to the Penn Manor community but also has fresh eyes for our organization; it’s a unique combination.” Meckley added that the organization has a vision to expand its services to the community, as its primary goal since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic has been to provide food and clothing to those affected.
Loft Community Partnership serves a wide array of community members, from school-age children to senior citizens, with the only requirement being residence in the Penn Manor School District. Prior to the organization’s establishment, Millersville Brethren in Christ Church operated the food and clothing bank for over a decade. During this time, Meckley worked as a social worker and was a member of a committee that discussed
the area’s unmet needs. In 2019, the church decided it could no longer maintain the drive, and Meckley and the committee resolved to fill the void. In late 2019, Loft Community Partnership was created. “We are always looking for volunteers, and we always need donations,” stated Graeff. “If you’re passionate about the Penn Manor community, come check us out.” For more information, visit www.loftcommunitypartnership.org.

Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation will have a supply drive on Saturday, Oct. 22, from noon to 3 p.m. at Jack’s Family Tavern, 15 S. Prince St., Millersville. The event will include an educational presentation at 1 p.m., and Acorn Acres’ ambassadors Snags the squirrel and Poppy the groundhog will be in attendance. Making his debut at the supply drive will be the organization’s new ambassador: a groundhog named Elliot.
Acorn Acres was founded in January 2021 by executive director Betsy Shenks, who first had the idea over a decade ago. On April 16, 2010, while mowing the grass on her lawn, Shenks saw what she thought was a dead baby squirrel, but upon closer inspection, she realized it was still alive. She quickly cleaned the squirrel and rushed to her computer to search the internet for advice on how to help the animal. At that moment, she knew her vocation was to help wild animals

in one way or another. Nearly a year later, Shenks lost her job in the corporate world and started her own business sewing bedding and other items for small animals in cages. Her primary clients were wildlife rehabilitators, and her business acquainted her with rehabilitators from across the country.
In 2020, Shenks began making masks for veterinarians who had donated their masks to hospitals being overwhelmed by the COVID-19 pandemic. A surge of people began buying masks from her, and with the funds raised from selling them, Shenks decided it was time to realize her dream and opened Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation. “I never wanted to profit off of the (COVID-19) disaster,” said Shenks. “I decided I was going to give it back to the community in a long-term, meaningful way.”
Based in Millersville, Acorn Acres specializes in rehabilitating squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs, which are the most common guests of wildlife rehabs in the country. “Half
of my job is rehabilitation, and the other half is education,” said Shenks. “These animals are the ones who aerate and fertilize our soil, and squirrels are a huge factor in reforestation. People dislike them and view them as pests, but they’re a huge part of our ecosystem.” Acorn Acres also provides education on how to discern which animals need assistance and which ones are better left alone.
Shenks hopes to grow her community outreach programs through Acorn Acres and is currently working with several school districts to develop educational programs for different grades. “The community response has been incredible. We’re looking to grow our volunteer base and will be looking for a larger facility in the future to accommodate the demand,” said Shenks.
Jack’s Family Tavern will be accepting donations in advance for those who are unable to attend the event. For more information, visit www.acorn acreswr.com/fill-the-trailer.

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.
It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a
local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No, they probably won’t get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.
In the past year the publisher of this newspaper, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has featured more than 1,500 front-page articles benefiting more than 1,000 local nonprofit organizations in Lancaster, Chester, Berks, York, and Dauphin counties. Those numbers don’t take into account the thousands of press releases that make their way into our papers each year.
With all the talk about social media, why do we continue to publish free community newspapers? It’s who we are and who we’ve been for nearly 70 years. We live here, too, and we want to keep our
communities thriving as much as you do.
If you know of an organization or individual making a positive impact on your community, contact us at news@ engleonline.com or visit https://townlively.com/event -submission to submit an event.

He looks sort of like a baby Bigfoot, and he’s rumored to live somewhere in the Columbia area. He also loves apples. He’s the Albatwitch, and he’ll be celebrated at the ninth annual Albatwitch Day, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 8. The festival will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St.
“This is a multifaceted event,” said Rick Fisher, who is organizing the festival with Chris Vera. “There is
so much happening.”
Although the official festival does not begin until 11 a.m., Vera noted that Ryan Sexton will be giving tours of the dungeon below the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 9 a.m. to noon. “It’s a nice way to give people a taste of the Market House before they head to the river,” he stated.
The festival will feature speakers, authors, live music, vendors and more. The Susquehanna National Heritage Area will offer free Wilder-
ness Inquiry Canoemobile tours on the Susquehanna River from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a fleet of 24-foot, 10-passenger canoes. Trolley tours will run throughout the day, giving participants a chance to hear some of the history of the area. From 7 to 9 p.m., haunted trolley tours will be featured. “We’ll also have ‘Alba’ at the festival,” Vera said. “She’ll be dressed up like the Albatwitch, and she’ll carry a basket of apples. People can take selfies with her.”
Vera estimated there will be more than 50 vendors on-site for the festival, featuring everything from handmade jewelry to food. “We’ll have a variety of nonprofits and organizations represented, including Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, which is always very popular,” said Fisher. “They’ll be bringing some of their animals.” The Indian Steps Museum will have a table, and the Lancaster PA Ghostbusters will be on-site. Local churches, including Holy Trinity Catholic Church and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, will operate food stands. Live music will be performed by Dillweed, Stone Soup, Sound Method and Tang Moon.
Church Sets Bluegrass Gospel Concert
The Fuller Family Singers will perform in concert on Saturday, Oct. 8, on the lawn at God’s Missionary Church, 2323 Marietta Ave., Lancaster. The group will present bluegrass gospel music from noon to 2 p.m.
Admission is free. For more information, call 717-2997002 or email lancastergmc @gmail.com.Inf ormation about the church is available at www.facebook.com/ lancastergmc.
Inside Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, a variety of speakers will present programs. Speakers will include Mary Fabian, founder of the Pennsylvania Bigfoot Project; Eric Altman, executive director of the PA Bigfoot Society; and Tim Renner, creator of the “Strange Familiars” podcast.
Vera noted that Albatwitch Day draws visitors from all over the East Coast, as far away as Virginia, New York and New Jersey. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, located at 21 N. Second St.
“You’ll have a good time at this event,” Fisher said. “If you don’t want to learn more about the Albatwitch, you can listen to music or eat or shop or take a canoe ride or a trolley tour. There’s really something for everybody.”
For more information on Albatwitch Day, visit https:// albatwitchday.com or search for “Albatwitch Day” on Facebook.
Inviting people to Albatwitch Day are Chris Vera (left) and Rick Fisher.

Golfers Finish 3rd in
BY MONA STEINHAUER
Penn Manor’s Jesse Shue fired a four-over-par 75 to lead the Comets to a third-place finish in the Lancaster-Lebanon League championships held at Fairview Golf Course Monday, Sept. 26.
Shue was just two strokes ahead of teammate JP Radwanski, who tied for 7th with a 77. Seb Elias followed just as closely, finishing in a 3-way tie with 79 while Aidan Doyle’s 80 rounded out the top four counters and left the Comets with a 311 team total, just behind Manheim Township (306) and tourney winner Cedar Crest (300). All four will compete in the District Three Championship at Briarwood October 7-8.
“We actually did better today than in our season where we averaged 328.6 as a team,” noted head coach Tom Reustle. “But I’m not surprised. We have been so close all season and just couldn’t put that complete round together. Hopefully, we are beginning to peak at the right time.”
Brayden Souder, with an 81, will be an alternate for districts. Cole Beakes also competed and finished with an 86.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The boys’ soccer team secured a much-needed 2-1 victory at York Country Day Saturday, Sept. 24 before returning to Section One play opposite McCaskey last Tuesday as the second half of the season got underway.
George Backus scored on a header in the 23rd minute while Tyler Hostetter, assisted by Owen Leddy, scored on a well-placed shot.
“We picked up YCD in hopes of strengthening our schedule and district power ranking,” said head coach Paul Taylor. “I’m glad we got the win. George, Tyler, and Owen, along with Peyton Landis and Wyatt Hopstetter all played very well.”
After suffering a 3-0 loss the first time around, McCaskey was determined to turn things around and hung a 2-0 loss on the Comets (3-8-0 overall) last Tuesday in Lancaster.
TENNIS
The tennis team improved to 4-3 in Section One with a convincing 6-1 win over Ephrata last Monday, Sept. 26. Catherine Rabatin and Erin Shipley took No. 1 doubles quickly (8-1), while Autumn Kirkley and Daphne Eisenhauer battled to an 8-6 win at the third tandem.
Manor cruised through singles with clean sweep victories by Rabatin (6-0, 6-0), Haley Hutchinson (6-1, 6-4), Shipley (6-2, 6-3) and Kirkley (6-1, 6-3).
“It’s been exciting to have everyone collectively contribute to these wins,” said head coach Amanda Pryzbylkowski. “Tennis is a short season so most of the work goes on in the off-season and that’s up to them. They’ve all really stepped up this year.”
The girls were coming off a 4-3 loss against Hempfield on Friday, Sept. 23. Rabatin and Shipley won 8-5 while Kirkley and Eisenhauer pulled out a 9-8 (7-0) nailbiter at No. 3 for a 2-1 edge after doubles. But the Knights rose to the occasion, winning three of four singles to steal the victory. Rabatin spoiled their sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sophie Carson.
CROSS COUNTRY
In tri-meet action Tuesday, Sept. 27, the Comets posted mixed results topping Lebanon 21-28 but falling short against Warwick, 22-36.
Kaleb Kabakjian turned in a 17:13 victory to pace the pack. Tristan Weaver (6th), and Carter Vinson (9th) both broke into the top ten while Jack Hightower (11th) was just off the mark. Donovan Landis (17th) rounded out the top five counters with Jack Steele (19th),
League Championshp
Aidan Gerlach (20th) and Chase Bearden (21st) providing support.
“Kaleb had another top performance, earning his second overall win,” noted head coach Andrea Kramer.
The girls’ team got a secondplace effort from Abby Ames (21:05) but it wasn’t enough for a sweep. The Comets blanked Lebanon 15-50 and lost 22-39 to Warwick.
Kenzie Nafziger was fourth overall with Bethany Hetrick adding a top ten finish in 23:36. Madison Martin (11th) and Alyssa Eby (14th) accounted for the scoring. Polina Balkenhol (15th), Zoe King (16th) and Charity Hetrick (19th) all finished in the top 20.
VOLLEYBALL
With a total team effort, the Comets handled Warwick (25-17, 25-15, 25-9) Thursday, Sept. 22 and then dominated McCaskey (25-10, 25-11, 25-19) on the 27th for their fifth win of the season.
“Jordan Bailey (17 digs) and Janelle Bowmaster (9 digs) handled the bulk of our serve receive and their passing was the rock solid foundation of our offense,” praised head coach Tim Joyce. “Maya Sugra, Mackenzie Cassel, and Maggie Garvey all contributed as tough serving specialists and/or defensive specialists and even sophomore setter Alyssa Mattern got some varsity level reps, putting up four assists,” he added. “The hard work and efficiency of our starters afforded us the opportunity to work in our full roster.”
Cassidy McCollum led net play with 9 kills with Lezlie Nguyen (8 kills, 3.5 blocks, 2 aces), Taylor Long (5) and Brianna Lee (4 kills, 5 blocks) also putting the pressure on Warwick. Eliana Knaub and McCollum also combined for 13 digs and five aces.
Against McCaskey, Bowmas-
ter (5 kills), Bailey (6 aces, 7 digs), Garvey (7 digs), Mattern (9 assists) and Sugra (1 block) were the stat leaders.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The girls’ soccer team shook off a 1-0 loss to Hempfield by capturing their fourth shutout win of the season, a 3-0, nonleague result over Wilson on Sept. 22.
After a scoreless first half, the Comets tallied all three of their goals in a span of nine minutes to take control. Izzy Kligge started the scoring spree when she found the back of the net in the 57th minute. Three minutes later Lauren Stoner broke through while Carolyn Hinkle capped the action in the 66th minute. Allison Burkholder needed just three saves to earn the shutout.
The winning continued with a 52 victory over Cedar Crest on the 27th. Stoner and Lilly Rineer each scored twice, Anouk Landgraff added one and Carly Keene dished out four assists as the Comets swept the series against the Falcons.
FIELD HOCKEY
After crushing Hempfield (10-0 on Sept. 22) and handling Central Dauphin 6-2 two days later, the Comets secured its fourth onegoal win of the season, holding off a determined Conestoga Valley squad 2-1 in overtime last Monday night.
Liz Bustillo’s first quarter goal put the Comets in front while CV’s Ellie Hershey tied the game in the third quarter. After a scoreless fourth, freshman Morgan Hook notched her first goal of the season, one-timing McGough’s cross for the game-winner at the 14:14 mark.
After a scoreless first frame against Hempfield, Isabelle Thatcher opened the scoring in the second quarter and Manor never looked back. Caity McGough (3 assists), and Avery Bradburn each scored twice while Annie Bibus, Bustillo, Tristan Groff (3
assists), Chloe Hook and Emily Kemmer added one goal each. Manor scored four times in the second quarter to pull away from CD, who notched a pair of fourth quarter goals. Bradburn scored twice. Bustillo (3 assists), Grace Gerner, Thatcher and McGough also found the back of the net.
Gerner’s third quarter stood the test as the Comets blanked Manheim Township last Wednesday.
FOOTBALL
Penn Manor put up a seasonhigh 36 points and yielded a season-low seven in a convincing win over Reading Friday, Sept. 23. Up 9-0 at the half, the Comets exploded for 27 third quarter points and improved to 2-0 in Section One.
A Peter Skiadas field goal and a Jonathan Osman (65 rushing yards) interception return accounted for Manor’s early lead.
The Comets scored three times in less than two minutes after the break to take control. Eli Warfel sprinted 35-yards up the middle and after that, the defense took over. Sekai Lewis recovered a botched pitch and raced to the endzone while Jordan Martin literally ripped the ball out of a ballcarrier’s hands and raced 20 yards for another TD. Osman added a 56-yard TD run to cap the third quarter scoring.

Boehm’s Church Posts Fall Fest
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Boehm’s Church will host its Fall Fest on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its campus located at 13 W. Boehms Road, Willow Street. The event will be free to attend and include a variety of activities for both adults and children. Several vendors will sell antiques and handcrafted items at a flea market held during the event, and pumpkin painting will be offered to kids.
Homemade food will be available for purchase during the event, including chicken corn and ham and bean soups, cakes, pies and apple dumplings made by members of the
church. Hot dogs, sauerkraut, chips and Turkey Hill beverages will also be available for purchase.
This will be the first Fall Fest held at Boehm’s Church. For 34 years, the church held an annual Apple Festival, a tradition that ended during the COVID-19 pandemic. After enduring many challenges over the past couple years, members of the church decided it was time to adopt a new tradition in the spirit of the Apple Festival in an effort to bring the community together once more.
“Now that the pandemic has winded down, we thought it was important to get the community back together on church grounds,” said
Karen Karr, a member of Boehm’s Church for over 30 years and a coordinator of Fall Fest. “We’ve added some things that the Apple Festival didn’t have and we’re hoping to make Fall Fest a yearly tradition.”
Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue will be present at Fall Fest, accompanied by rescued dogs, to raise funds for the organization and to educate attendees on its mission. Based in Chester County, Lucky Dawg is a no-kill, foster based animal rescue run entirely by volunteers that rescues unwanted or abused animals in the area and places them in better homes.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., hayrides through the church grounds will be

The event will focus on the science of global warming, the policies surrounding it, and more.

All proceeds from the sale will directly benefit the library. On-site free parking will be available, and cash, checks, and all major credit cards will be accepted.
Additionally, the Friends have
available. Guests will be able to tour the historic Boehm’s Chapel and tying shed, and golf cart rides through the property will be available for those unable to tour the area by foot. Built in 1791, Boehm’s Chapel is one of the oldest Methodist churches in the country. It was initially constructed for those who wished to have their weddings on church grounds, and the tying shed was made so the bride and groom would have an area to change before the wedding. The Boehm’s Chapel Society will offer more information on the property’s history at the event.
