Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church welcomes new youth pastor

Last December, Evan Belczyk of Millersville started his own youth group. Belczyk, who teaches health and physical education at Swift Middle School, was inspired to create the group to get to know his students and their families better in a faith-based setting. On Sept. 1, Belczyk officially started his role as a youth pastor at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, and the church now serves as a home for his youth group.

At first, the group was not affiliated with any church, so students would take turns convening at each other’s homes. At each meeting, Belczyk and the students would play games, hold Bible studies, share a meal and participate in praise and worship music together. The youth group allowed Belczyk to build relationships with students’ families, and it

also gave students an opportunity to bond with each other. Members of the group would often attend other students’ sporting events to show their support.

“I love getting to know my students and their families more, and I love having God at the center of those relationships. It inspired

facility to host its activities. The youth group moved its meetings to CLPC in January. As the pastor and congregation got to know Belczyk and his program more, the church offered him the position as an official youth pastor.

Tapas Shindig to shine light on human trafficking

The battle against human trafficking is difficult and continual. North Star Initiative is seeking help to carry on the fight.

It is that mission that is really at the heart of North Star Initiative’s annual Tapas Shindig. This year’s fundraising, awareness raising and relationship building event will be presented on Friday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Foundry48, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz.

The event will begin with networking, a silent auction, tapas and

mocktails, followed by a program and live auction, before concluding with dessert and coffee.

The theme for the event is “Light Up the Night. - Together we can illuminate the path to a brighter future for survivors of sex trafficking.”

“A lot of people ask me, ‘What can I do? I want to get involved,’” said North Star Initiative executive director Melinda Clark. “This is the time to come and get involved. It’s also partnering together to form a community where trafficking is unimaginable, where trafficking doesn’t exist. We encourage people

me to go out of my comfort zone and start my own group,” Belczyk said. “I never thought I would end up doing something like this.”

Belczyk’s youth group began with nine students, but it quickly grew to include 25 active members. One student’s parents were part of the congregation at CLPC, and they asked the church’s pastor if the group could use the church’s

Now that the youth group has a home base, Belczyk has the space and resources to host more students, as well as offer them more activities. Since Belczyk became a youth pastor at CLPC, the youth group’s meetings have been attended by more than 40 students. Belczyk plans to utilize the program’s new resources to offer activities like retreats and mission trips to his students. “We never had the resources for things like that before,” Belczyk said. “It’s been awesome to be able to give the kids more opportunities and a consistent place to meet.”

Belczyk and his group are currently deciding on a location to visit for a mission trip next summer, which they plan to make an annual activity.

Tapas is a food trend that originated in Spain and involves serving a variety of appetizers and small servings. The evening’s ambiance will be enhanced by live music.

“The food is delicious, and it’s just one of the fun aspects of the evening,” said Clark. “We’re gathering with good people over good food for a good cause. It’s a feel of friends getting together to enjoy each other’s company. ... It builds its own synergy when people connect around the cause.”

Clark is expected to address the gathering about North Star Initiative’s purpose, the work it has already accomplished and the struggles that

“I’ll have a chance to share North Star’s mission and vision to end trafficking and supporting those lives that have been affected by it,” said Clark. “I want to talk about how our common experiences can help the challenges our survivors face. People think it’s happening just overseas, but it’s not. It’s also happening here in Lancaster County. It’s the perfect opportunity to get an update on the state of it.”

North Star Initiative is planning for 200 people to attend Tapas Shindig. This year’s goal is to raise $200,000 for the mission, $25,000 more than was donated in 2022.

This year will mark North Star Initiative’s fifth edition of Tapas Shindig. Last year’s event was conducted at The Junction Center in Manheim.

Located in Lititz, North Star Initiative was founded in 2010. It began through an undercover collaboration with law enforcement.

from a children’s book will be stationed along the walking path, allowing youngsters to read the story as they travel the route. The event regularly includes a task for families with young kids to complete; last year, children took part in a scavenger hunt as they finished the walk.

The walk is organized every year by Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren in Quarryville, but congregations from the Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg areas often participate as well. This year, representatives from Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, Refton Brethren in Christ Church and St. Catherine of Siene Catholic Church have assisted Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren with planning the walk.

“Over the years, the event has continued to grow thanks to our move to Muddy Run Park,” said Mary Etta Reinhart, who co-coordinates the walk with fellow Mechanic Grove member Don Trimble. “It’s a beautiful, familyand pet-friendly place to walk, and the event is a great way to spend a morning doing something important.”

Last year, more than 75 walkers from 12 local churches and organizations participated in the CROP Hunger Walk in the Southern End. The event broke its record for the highest amount of money raised by a single walk by accumulating more than $22,000 in donations. Since the tradition was started by the Solanco Ministerium in 1980, the walk has raised nearly $450,000.

Every year, CROP Hunger Walks are held throughout the country to raise money for Church World Service, a nonprofit that seeks to battle international food insecurity. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds from Solanco’s CROP Hunger Walk will benefit Church World Service Lancaster; the remaining 25% percent will be donated to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’

Hope.Inspire.Love. talks the talk, walks the walk

Fundraisers couldn’t generate financial resources without generous donors, and nonprofits couldn’t perform their philanthropic work without fundraisers.

Four months after presenting its Hope for Freedom Gala, Hope.Inspire.Love. will conduct the second of its two yearly fundraisers, Freedom Walk, on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. Hope.Inspire.Love is in its eighth year of battling human trafficking and sexual exploitation, and the event is designed to raise money for the fight against human trafficking and to raise the awareness of its effects.

“Fundraising is vital. It’s the glue,” said Hope.Inspire.Love CEO and president Amy Thurston, who founded the organization with her husband, Steve. “Nonprofits rely on the community. We need their support financially. The survivors know the community is behind their healing, and we’re in the backyard of the community. I literally am sitting here every day thinking, ‘We could do so much if we had more funding.’”

The Freedom Walk is a 2-mile walk carried out silently through the streets of Lancaster city, beginning and ending in Musser Park. In 2022, the walk raised $20,000 for the mission of Hope.Inspire.Love., and this year, Thurston is hoping to raise that and $5,000 more.

“We walk on the sidewalk, in single file, in silence,” said Thurston. “There’s something bold about silence. Actions don’t need words. That’s why we do it.”

“It’s a next step for people to

learn about our organization,” Thurston continued. “People are walking for people who have been enslaved. It’s beautiful because we have survivors who attend. It says, ‘We’re all in this fight together. Let’s do better.’”

Founded in 2019, the Freedom Walk will have its fourth iteration this year. In 2022, some 200 individuals took part in the event. Thurston would like to see that number rise to 250 or 300 participants this time around.

Since its inception, the Freedom Walk has included live music at the park to enhance its atmosphere and a survivors’ tent for people to learn firsthand about the devastating effects of human trafficking.

“The reality is that (human trafficking) has affected all of us in the community in different ways,” said Thurston. “It takes a community to fight it. What we’ve realized is that a lot of people want to help. The Freedom Walk allows people to serve. This Freedom Walk has power.”

Hope.Inspire.Love. seeks to combat sex trafficking and sexual exploitation through traumainformed mentorship, outreach and awareness and prevention education.

“Our (mission) isn’t a shortterm relationship; it’s a long-term solution,” Thurston said. “We started with prevention and education. But I said, ‘We’ve got to do more.’ As we’ve evolved, we’ve added more staff. We developed our mentoring program and our job skills training. I think we’ve grown more than we expected.”

For additional information about the Freedom Walk or to register, go to www.hope inspirelove.org/freedomwalk.

Sample food from around the world at an International Gourmet Gala

The members of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Columbia come from a vast array of backgrounds and nationalities. Now they’re inviting you to sample cuisine from their countries while enjoying live music, fellowship and fun at an International Gourmet Gala. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the St. Peter Parish Center, Second and Union streets, Columbia.

St. Peter was once known as the

“Irish Parish,” reflecting the ethnicity of its founders, who built the first church in 1828. The Potato Famine in their mother country continued to bring Irish immigrants to the United States and to Columbia for decades, where many found work on the Philadelphia-Columbia Railroad.

Irish priests from St. Mary’s Church in Lancaster were sent to Columbia one Sunday a month to serve members of St. Peter. On the remaining Sundays, parishioners rode to Lancaster on horseback to attend Mass.

Waves of immigration in the late

19th and early 20th centuries brought German and Italian Catholics, followed by newcomers from all over the world, and the parish of St. Peter became a true melting pot of cultures.

“Years ago, the parish did individual nights representing different ethnicities from our church,” recalled Carole Bitts, who is helping to organize the gala. “This year, spontaneously, several people came up with the idea of doing it all in one night.”

Sylvia Garner, who is also on the

gala committee, said committee members approached people in the parish who were known for their cooking, including the family that makes Loreto’s marinara sauce and Josie McCleary, the church secretary, who makes Filipino egg rolls.

Foods from Mediterranean countries, Northern Europe, the British Isles, India, Asia, Africa, the Philippines and the Caribbean will be served. Young adults of the parish will serve the buffet style meal and

lend a hand with cleanup.

The menu will include hors d’oeuvres of German soft pretzels and Mexican guacamole with chips; Italian pasta; lumpiang

Shanghai Filipino egg rolls; Polish pierogies and kielbasa; Caribbean haricots verts aux amandes (green beans almondine); Mediterranean

stuffed grape leaves and hummus; Irish colcannon; Indian naan; and Blue Smoke Soul Food. Desserts will include French petit fours and German kuchen.

Live music will be performed by Al Schultz and other musicians, featuring members of the church choir as soloists. “We’ll have music from many of the countries represented, and we’ll have room for dancing,” Bitts said.

Garner envisions the social hall full of people for the gala. “We are

encouraging all community members to come, not just Catholics and not just members of our parish,” she said. “It’s going to be great food because we have some wonderful chefs in our parish. It’s not a formal event, but it can be fancy. Just be sure you dress comfortably for dancing.”

Seating is limited for the gala, and reservations are required by Sunday, Oct. 15. For more information or to make a reservation, call the parish office at 717-684-7070.
